Modeling the interrelationships between the input parameters and outputs (responses) in any machining processes is essential to understand the process behavior and material removal mechanism. The developed models can also act as effective prediction tools in envisaging the tentative values of the responses for given sets of input parameters. In this paper, the application potentialities of nine different regression models, such as linear regression (LR), polynomial regression (PR), support vector regression (SVR), principal component regression (PCR), quantile regression, median regression, ridge regression, lasso regression and elastic net regression are explored in accurately predicting response values during turning and drilling operations of composite materials. Their prediction performance is also contrasted using four statistical metrics, i.e., mean absolute percentage error, root mean squared percentage error, root mean squared logarithmic error and root relative squared error. Based on the lower values of those metrics and Friedman rank and aligned rank tests, SVR emerges out as the best performing model, whereas the prediction performance of median regression is worst. The results of the Wilcoxon test based on the drilling dataset identify the existence of statistically significant differences between the performances of LR and PCR, and PR and median regression models.

Cable force monitoring is an essential and critical part of structural health monitoring for cable-supported bridges. The quality of obtained information depends considerably on the number and location of limited sensors. The purpose of this article is to provide a method for optimal sensor placement for cable force monitoring in cable-supported bridges. Based on the spatial correlation between neighbouring or symmetrical cable forces, the structural information of non-monitored cables can be predicted by multioutput support vector regression models, established between monitored (input) and the non-monitored (output) cable forces. The number and placement of cable force sensors have significant influence on prediction performance of established multioutput support vector regression models. The proposed optimal sensor configuration is to select multioutput support vector regression models with minimum prediction error from all possible sensor locations. In this study, information entropy is employed to measure the prediction performance of different sensor configurations and formulate the objective function, optimised by three computationally effective algorithms: forward sequential sensor placement algorithm, backward sequential sensor placement algorithm and genetic algorithm. The application of proposed method to Nanjing No. 3 Yangtze River Bridge confirmed the efficiency, accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed method.


Intense rainfall produces flooding even on dry soil. As heavy rainfall is one of the causes for flooding it is necessary to predict the Rainfall to take necessary precautions for people who are living in risk zone areas. Prediction of Rainfall tomorrow is done accurately using Machine Learning regression and classification Techniques. For Rainfall prediction multiple attributes like Windspeed, Precipitation, Cloudcover, Humidity, Temperature and RainfallToday are considered to predict Rainfall Tomorrow. An ensemble approach is used where predictions from Regression models such as Linear Regression, Polynomial Regression, Ridge Regression and Lasso regression are stacked together and fed as new attributes to Meta Regressor along with Support Vector Regression for making final predictions. Also, predictions from classifications models such as Gaussian Naive Bayes, K-nearest neighbor, Support vector Machine and Random Forest are stacked together and fed as new attributes to Meta Classifier along with Logistic regression which is a binary classifier for higher predictive performance.

This work aims to model the combined cycle power plant (CCPP) using different algorithms. The algorithms used are Ridge, Linear regressor (LR), and upport vector regressor (SVR). The CCPP energy output data collected as a factor of thermal input variables, mainly exhaust vacuum, ambient temperature, relative humidity, and ambient pressure. Initially, the Ridge algorithm-based modeling is performed in detail, and then SVR-based LR, named as SVR (LR), SVR-based radial basis function—SVR (RBF), and SVR-based polynomial regression—SVR (Poly.) algorithms, are applied. Mean absolute error (MAE), R-squared (R2), median absolute error (MeAE), mean absolute percentage error (MAPE), and mean Poisson deviance (MPD) are assessed after their training and testing of each algorithm. From the modeling of energy output data, it is seen that SVR (RBF) is the most suitable in providing very close predictions compared to other algorithms. SVR (RBF) training R2 obtained is 0.98 while all others were 0.9–0.92. The testing predictions made by SVR (RBF), Ridge, and RidgeCV are nearly the same, i.e., R2 is 0.92. It is concluded that these algorithms are suitable for predicting sensitive output energy data of a CCPP depending on thermal input variables.

Various sensors have been proposed to address the negative health ramifications of inadequate fluid consumption. Amongst these solutions, motion-based sensors estimate fluid intake using the characteristics of drinking kinematics. This sensing approach is complicated due to the mutual influence of both the drink volume and the current fill level on the resulting motion pattern, along with differences in biomechanics across individuals. While motion-based strategies are a promising approach due to the proliferation of inertial sensors, previous studies have been characterized by limited accuracy and substantial variability in performance across subjects. This research seeks to address these limitations for a container-attachable triaxial accelerometer sensor. Drink volume is computed using support vector machine regression models with hand-engineered features describing the container’s estimated inclination. Results are presented for a large-scale data collection consisting of 1908 drinks consumed from a refillable bottle by 84 individuals. Per-drink mean absolute percentage error is reduced by 11.05% versus previous state-of-the-art results for a single wrist-wearable inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensor assessed using a similar experimental protocol. Estimates of aggregate consumption are also improved versus previously reported results for an attachable sensor architecture. An alternative tracking approach using the fill level from which a drink is consumed is also explored herein. Fill level regression models are shown to exhibit improved accuracy and reduced inter-subject variability versus volume estimators. A technique for segmenting the entire drink motion sequence into transport and sip phases is also assessed, along with a multi-target framework for addressing the known interdependence of volume and fill level on the resulting drink motion signature.

Ink transfer rate (ITR) is a reference index to measure the quality of 3D additive printing. In this study, an ink transfer rate prediction model is proposed by applying the least squares support vector machine (LSSVM). In addition, enhanced garden balsam optimization (EGBO) is used for selection and optimization of hyperparameters that are embedded in the LSSVM model. 102 sets of experimental sample data have been collected from the production line to train and test the hybrid prediction model. Experimental results show that the coefficient of determination (R2) for the introduced model is equal to 0.8476, the root-mean-square error (RMSE) is 6.6 × 10 (−3), and the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) is 1.6502 × 10 (−3) for the ink transfer rate of 3D additive printing.

In this article, the authors propose two models for BLDC motor winding temperature estimation using machine learning methods. For the purposes of the research, measurements were made for over 160 h of motor operation, and then, they were preprocessed. The algorithms of linear regression, ElasticNet, stochastic gradient descent regressor, support vector machines, decision trees, and AdaBoost were used for predictive modeling. The ability of the models to generalize was achieved by hyperparameter tuning with the use of cross-validation. The conducted research led to promising results of the winding temperature estimation accuracy. In the case of sensorless temperature prediction (model 1), the mean absolute percentage error MAPE was below 4.5% and the coefficient of determination R2 was above 0.909. In addition, the extension of the model with the temperature measurement on the casing (model 2) allowed reducing the error value to about 1% and increasing R2 to 0.990. The results obtained for the first proposed model show that the overheating protection of the motor can be ensured without direct temperature measurement. In addition, the introduction of a simple casing temperature measurement system allows for an estimation with accuracy suitable for compensating the motor output torque changes related to temperature.

Accurate estimation of the degree of battery aging is essential to ensure safe operation of electric vehicles. In this paper, using real-world vehicles and their operational data, a battery aging estimation method is proposed based on a dual-polarization equivalent circuit (DPEC) model and multiple data-driven models. The DPEC model and the forgetting factor recursive least-squares method are used to determine the battery system’s ohmic internal resistance, with outliers being filtered using boxplots. Furthermore, eight common data-driven models are used to describe the relationship between battery degradation and the factors influencing this degradation, and these models are analyzed and compared in terms of both estimation accuracy and computational requirements. The results show that the gradient descent tree regression, XGBoost regression, and light GBM regression models are more accurate than the other methods, with root mean square errors of less than 6.9 mΩ. The AdaBoost and random forest regression models are regarded as alternative groups because of their relative instability. The linear regression, support vector machine regression, and k-nearest neighbor regression models are not recommended because of poor accuracy or excessively high computational requirements. This work can serve as a reference for subsequent battery degradation studies based on real-time operational data.

Cracks typically develop in concrete due to shrinkage, loading actions, and weather conditions; and may occur anytime in its life span. Autogenous healing concrete is a type of self-healing concrete that can automatically heal cracks based on physical or chemical reactions in concrete matrix. It is imperative to investigate the healing performance that autogenous healing concrete possesses, to assess the extent of the cracking and to predict the extent of healing. In the research of self-healing concrete, testing the healing performance of concrete in a laboratory is costly, and a mass of instances may be needed to explore reliable concrete design. This study is thus the world’s first to establish six types of machine learning algorithms, which are capable of predicting the healing performance (HP) of self-healing concrete. These algorithms involve an artificial neural network (ANN), a k-nearest neighbours (kNN), a gradient boosting regression (GBR), a decision tree regression (DTR), a support vector regression (SVR) and a random forest (RF). Parameters of these algorithms are tuned utilising grid search algorithm (GSA) and genetic algorithm (GA). The prediction performance indicated by coefficient of determination (R2) and root mean square error (RMSE) measures of these algorithms are evaluated on the basis of 1417 data sets from the open literature. The results show that GSA-GBR performs higher prediction performance (R2GSA-GBR = 0.958) and stronger robustness (RMSEGSA-GBR = 0.202) than the other five types of algorithms employed to predict the healing performance of autogenous healing concrete. Therefore, reliable prediction accuracy of the healing performance and efficient assistance on the design of autogenous healing concrete can be achieved.

The precise prediction of a rotor against instability is needed for avoiding the degradation or failure of the system’s performance due to the parametric variabilities of a bearing system. In general, the design of the journal bearing is framed based on the deterministic theoretical analysis. To map the precise prediction of hydrodynamic performance, it is needed to include the uncertain effect of input parameters on the output behavior of the journal bearing. This paper presents the uncertain hydrodynamic analysis of a two-axial-groove journal bearing including randomness in bearing oil viscosity and supply pressure. To simulate the uncertainty in the input parameters, the Monte Carlo simulation is carried out. A support vector machine is employed as a metamodel to increase the computational efficiency. Both individual and compound effects of uncertainties in the input parameters are studied to quantify their effect on the steady-state and dynamic characteristics of the bearing.
