Calcium (Ca), with abundant and cheap reserves, is a potential element to facilitate the further application of Mg-Al-Sn based alloys. Here, effects of Ca content on the microstructure and tensile properties of Mg-2.0Al-0.8Sn (wt.%) alloys were systematically studied. The experimental results illustrated that the strength, ductility and isotropy of the alloys improved simultaneously with the increase of Ca content. The better ductility and isotropy could be contributed to the weakened texture via particle stimulation nucleation mechanism. The higher strength benefited from the combination of finer grains, more precipitates and residual dislocation density. Eventually, the Mg-2.0Al-0.8Sn-0.5Ca (wt.%) alloy showed the best room-temperature balance of strength and ductility with a yield strength of ∼226.0 MPa, an ultimate tensile strength of ∼282.4 MPa and a fracture elongation of ∼20.2%, which has huge potential as an applicable low-cost high-performance magnesium alloy.

This paper investigates the effect of Fe, Cr and B additions, in small proportions, as alloying elements in Ni3Al with the purpose to reduce its intrinsic fragility and extrinsic embrittlement and to enhance, in the same time, its mechanical properties. It represents a development of some previous research works of the authors, proving that Ni3Al-Fe-Cr-B alloys obtained by reactive synthesis (SHS) starting from Mechanically Alloyed powder mixtures have superior both room temperature tensile strength and ductility, and compression ones at temperatures up to 800 °C, than pure Ni3Al. These create premises for their using as superalloys substitutes.

The thixoforging process in which magazine plates of AZ91D magnesium alloy were thixoforged in semi-solid state using semi-solid billets prepared by common SIMA method and new SIMA method was investigated. The results show that the pressure has a great influence on the semi-solid billet’s ability to fill die’s cavity. When the pressure is 500KN, the semi-solid billet can’t fill the die’s cavity completely. When the pressure is 2000KN, the semi-solid billet can fill the die’s cavity completely. Room temperature mechanical properties, such as yield strength of 201.4MPa, ultimate tensile strength of 321.8MPa and elongation of 15.3%, can be obtained successfully when the technological parameters, including pressure of 200KN, die preheating temperature of 723K, holding for 20min at 818K, are satisfied. Comparing with common SIMA, mechanical properties of room temperature and high temperature at 373Kare enhanced heavily.

The microstructure and mechanical properties of aged Mg-5.5Al-0.5Y magnesium alloy with Sm addition were investigated. The results show that with proper content of Sm addition, the microstructure of Mg-5.5Al-0.5Y magnesium alloy is refined obviously. The quantity of β-Mg17Al12 phase is reduced, and Al2Sm particle phase is formed. With the increase of Sm addition, the mechanical properties of the alloy at room and elevated temperature increase at first, and then decrease. When the content of Sm is up to 1%, the values of tensile strength and elongation at room temperature,150 and 175 are up to their maxima synchronously, 244MPa/20.07%, 217MPa/18.86% and 185MPa/19.15% respectively.

A series of Mg-6Al-2Sr-1.5Y-xNd (x=0, 0.3, 0.6, 0.9, 1.2) alloy samples were prepared and their microstructures were observed and mechanical properties were measured. The existing forms of Y and Nd were studied. The effects of Y and Nd on microstructure and mechanical properties of AJ62 alloy were investigated. The results show that the main existing forms of Y and Nd in AJ62 alloy are Al2Y and Al2Nd. The combined addition of rare earth Y and Nd can refine α-Mg matrix obviously and reduce the amount of the β-Mg17Al12phases; after solid solution treatment, the tensile strength of the alloys rise first and fall later with increasing content of Nd. When the content of Nd is about 0.6%wt, the values of tensile strengthes are up to the maximum both at room temperature and at 448 K.

Alloys in the dilute Ti - Al - Mn system, which are considered to be near-α alloys, possess an attractive combination of strength and ductility, with the room temperature properties being intermediate between CP Ti and Ti -6 Al -4 V . Low levels of Fe are often tolerated in such alloys, but rarely introduced as deliberate alloying additions (with the exception of CP Ti grades), and from a processing perspective, it may indeed be desirable to have higher tolerances for Fe as it is often a common contaminant which must be controlled. In this presentation, the effect of 0.3 wt .% Fe on the microstructure and behavior of a Ti -0.75 wt .% Al -0.75 wt .% Mn is reported. It was found that annealing in the (α+β) phase field can lead to an increase in the ductility of the alloy without having a detrimental effect on the tensile strength.

Developing new alloys and techniques is important for the applications of magnesium alloy products. The greatest challenge in the area is to exploit new wrought magnesium alloys[1]. In this paper, the effects of Zn addition on the microstructures and mechanical properties of the MZK60 wrought alloy which is modified from ZK60 have been investigated. The microstructures of these alloys at various states were evaluated by optical microscopy. The mechanical properties at room temperature of these alloys were studied systematically by tensile test. Experimental results indicated that increasing Zn content to 7~10%wt is able to get not only higher tensile strength and yield strength, but also higher elongation.

Microstructures and tensile properties of Mg-8Zn-4Al-xCax=0.6wt.%, 1.0wt.%, 1.3wt.%, named as alloy 1#, 2# and 3# , respectively)extruded magnesium alloy tube were studied at room and elevated temperature. The results show that Ca can increase tensile strength of the alloy at 150 and 200°C significantly. At the temperature of 200°C, alloy 3# achieved optimal tensile properties, of which the ultimate tensile strength, the yield strength and the elongation were 165.8MPa, 108.7Mpa and 41.5% respectively. Compared with the properties of as cast ZAC8506 Magnesium alloy, it is shown that the tensile properties of alloy 3# are much higher than that of ZAC8506 at both room temperature and 150°C. Alloy 3# also gets better tensile performance than AZ91D extruded tube produced in the same way at the temperature of 200°C Mg2Al3 and Ca2Mg5Zn13 phases are found in the microstructure which should contribute to the higher performance of alloy 3# at elevated temperature

According to the profile section of transport equipment, the wide and hollow AZ31 magnesium alloy profiles was self-designed. Extrusion molding performance of the profiles, the law of microstructure and mechanical properties were studied when billets pretreatment and extrusion temperature were changed. The conclusions are as follows: (1) The grains of AZ31 profiles extruded by pre-extrusion billet are smaller and the strength is better, its maximum tensile strength is 280MPa. (2) Other processes being equal, the grains of AZ31 profiles are smaller and strength is higher, but the plastic is bad, when the extrusion temperature is 300°C. However, both strength and ductility of AZ31 profiles are better, when the extrusion temperature is 350°C. (3) Wide and Hollow AZ31 profiles perform significant heterogeneity and anisotropic characteristics on mechanical properties.

Ti-6Al-2.5Sn-4Zr-0.7Mo-0.3Si-0.3Y alloy matrix composite reinforced with 7%vol TiB whiskers was fabricated by Induction Skull Melting (ISM) technique and one-direction forged technology utilizing the reaction between titanium and TiB2. The microstructure, room temperature and high temperature mechanical properties have been presented and discussed. Microstructural analysis of the composites revealed that the microstructure was significantly refined and TiB whiskers were made to align the longitudinal direction after forging. It shows that the tensile strength and ductility of the composites has a significant improvement, especially at room temperature.
