The cooperative learning method is a learning method that is said to be efficient and in line with the transformation of the education system nowadays. This method is a student-centered learning method that emphasizing social interaction and collaboration between students in order to achieve the learning outcomes. From the preliminary observations, it was found that the level of student achievement in the Mathematical Computing course at Muadzam Shah Polytechnic is quite alarming with the failure percentage up to 36.75%. Therefore, as a teaching and learning strategy to overcome this problem, cooperative learning methods are implemented on students who repeat the Mathematical Computing courses. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of cooperative learning methods on student achievement in this course. This study uses a quasi-experimental method consisting of two groups of respondents: each consisting of 20 students from the control group and the experimental group. A pre-test was given to test student achievement before treatment and a post-test were given to test the effectiveness of the treatment given. The analysis was made based on the percentage of student achievement for the experimental group and the control group. The findings of the study show that cooperative learning methods have been successful in improving student achievement in the course. This shows that cooperative learning methods in teaching and learning are effective and suitable to be used as an approach in the teaching and learning process of Mathematical Computing courses.

This study aims to determine: (1) whether the mathematics conceptual understanding of students who take learning with the flipped classroom model assisted by the Powtoon animation media is better than mathematics conceptual understanding of students who take conventional learning method, (2) whether the learning independence of students who take learning with the flipped classroom model assisted by the Powtoon animation media is better than students' learning independence following conventional learning method, and (3) is mathematics conceptual understanding and learning independence of students who take learning with the flipped model with Powtoon animation media is better than understanding math concepts and students' learning independence with conventional learning method. The population of this study was all students of class VII SMP Negeri 2 Kuta Selatan in the academic year 2019/2020. The sample in this study was determined by cluster random sampling technique, which found as many as 2 classes who were divided into the experimental class and the control class. This research is a quasi-experimental study with a post-test only control group design. The students' mathematics conceptual understanding data was collected using essay tests to understand mathematical concepts, a set of students' learning independence data was obtained with a student learning independence questionnaire. Data were analyzed using the Manova test with a significance level of 5%. The experimental results show that: (1) the ability to understand mathematical concepts of students who take learning with the flipped classroom model assisted by Powtoon animation media is better than students who take conventional learning method, (2) the independence of learning of students who take learning with the flipped classroom model assisted by the Powtoon animation media than students who follow conventional learning method, and (3) the ability to understand mathematical concepts and the learning independence of students who take lessons with the flipped classroom model assisted by Powtoon animation media is better than students who follow conventional learning method. This is because students who take part in learning with the flipped classroom model assisted by the Powtoon animation media are more enthusiastic about learning in class because they have previously studied the material with the videos in their homes. Students are also trained to re-express their understanding with group discussions.

Sight translation is the oral translation of a written text and is a mixture of translation and interpreting. Sight translation is a widely-used activity in translation training programs. Yet, this mode of translation has rarely been applied as a reading instruction technique in Iranian EFL instruction context in spite of the growing interest in using sight translation in language teaching and learning. This study aims at investigating the effect of sight translation on the reading comprehension ability of Iranian undergraduate EFL students. This is a quasi-experimental study involving treatment. To this end, four reading comprehension classes involving 70 learners were divided into two groups, with the experimental one receiving reading instruction with sight translation exercises and the control group receiving reading instruction without sight translation exercises. The posttest results revealed that the experimental group performing sight translation exercises in classroom outperformed the control group who had not engaged in sight translation. This study has implications for ELT instructors and learners in an Iranian context as they can use sight translation exercises as an effective technique for improving the reading comprehension ability of their learners.
