In this work, the engineering stress–strain tensile curve and the force-deflection bending curve of two Dual-Phase (DP) steels are modeled, combining the mechanical data of fully ferritic and fully martensitic steels. The data is coupled by a modified law of mixture, which includes a partition parameter q that takes into account the strength and strain distributions in both martensite and ferrite phases. The resulting constitutive model is solved in the context of the finite element method assuming a modified mixture rule in which a new parameter q′ is defined in order to extend the capabilities of the model to deal with triaxial stresses and strains and thus achieve a good agreement between experimental results and numerical predictions. The model results show that the martensite only deforms elastically, while the ferrite deforms both elastically and plastically. Furthermore, the partition factor q′ is found to strongly depend on the ferritic strain level. Finally, it is possible to conclude that the maximum strength of the studied DP steels is moderately influenced by the maximum strength of martensite.

An innovative approach was opted for modeling the flow and heat transfer through spirally fluted tubes. The model divided the flow domain into two regions. The flutes were modeled as a porous substrate with direction-dependent permeabilities. This enabled modeling the swirl component in the fluted tube. The properties of the porous substrate such as its thickness, porosity, and ratio of the direction-dependent permeabilities were obtained from the geometry of the fluted tube. Experimental data on laminar Nusselt numbers and friction factors for different types of fluted tubes representing a broad range of flute geometry were available. Experimental data from a few of the tubes tested were used to propose a relationship between the permeability of the porous substrate and the flute parameters, particularly the flute spacing. The governing equations were discretized using the Finite Element Method. The model was verified and applied to the other tubes in the test matrix. Very good agreement was found between the numerical predictions and the experimental data.

Abstract The deformation behavior of a tire in contact with the roadway is complicated, in particular, under the traction and braking conditions. A tread rubber block in contact with the road undergoes compression and shearing forces. These forces may cause the loss of contact at the edges of the block. Theoretical analysis based on the energy method is presented on the contact deformation of a tread rubber block subjected to compressive and shearing forces. Experimental work and numerical calculation by means of the finite element method are conducted to verify the predicted results. Good agreement is obtained among these analytical, numerical, and experimental results.

Abstract MITTAL DI-FORM T700 and HF80Y100T are low-carbon steels with a manganese and silicon composition. Dual-phase (DP) steels are one of the important advanced high-strength steel (AHSS) products developed for the automotive industry. Their microstructure typically consists of a soft ferrite phase with dispersed islands of a hard martensite phase. The martensite phase is substantially stronger than the ferrite phase. The DI-FORM grades exhibit low yield-to-tensile strengths, and the numeric designation in the name corresponds to the tensile strength. The effect of the width to thickness ratio on the bendability of sheet metal is investigated using the finite element method (FEM) employing the Gurson–Tvergaard–Needleman (GTN) model. Strain path changes in the sheet with change in the width/thickness ratio. It is shown that bendability and fracture strain increase significantly by decrease in the width/thickness ratio. The stress state is almost uniaxial when the stress ratio (α) is close to zero for narrow sheets. Stress ratio is nothing but the major stress to minor stress ratio. This delays the growth and coalescence of micro-voids as the volumetric strain and stress triaxiality (pressure/effective stress) decrease. On the other hand, ductility decreases with increase in α for wider sheets. Fracture bending strain is calculated and, as expected, it increases with decrease in the width/thickness ratio. Furthermore, a brief study is performed to understand the effect of superimposed hydrostatic pressure on fracture strain for various sheet metals with different width/thickness ratios. It is found that the superimposed hydrostatic pressure increases the ductility, and that the effect of the width/thickness ratio in metals on ductility is as significant as the effect of superimposed hydrostatic pressure. Numerical results are found to be in good agreement with experimental observations.

This article presents a very detailed study on the mechanical characterization of a highly nonlinear material, the immature equine zona pellucida (ZP) membrane. The ZP is modeled as a visco-hyperelastic soft matter. The Arruda–Boyce constitutive equation and the two-term Prony series are identified as the most suitable models for describing the hyperelastic and viscous components, respectively, of the ZP’s mechanical response. Material properties are identified via inverse analysis based on nonlinear optimization which fits nanoindentation curves recorded at different rates. The suitability of the proposed approach is fully demonstrated by the very good agreement between AFM data and numerically reconstructed force–indentation curves. A critical comparison of mechanical behavior of two immature ZP membranes (i.e., equine and porcine ZPs) is also carried out considering the information on the structure of these materials available from electron microscopy investigations documented in the literature.

This work investigated the microstructural effect on stretch flangeability of ferrite–martensite dual-phase (DP) steels. Three types of DP steels with various martensitic structures were prepared for the research: fibrous martensite in water-quenched (WQ) sample, chained martensite in air-quenched (AQ) sample, and coarse martensite in step-quenched (SQ) sample. The WQ specimen exhibited the highest mechanical strength and hole expansion ratio compared to the AQ and SQ samples despite their similar fraction of martensite. Such a result was explained in view of uniform distribution of fine martensite and high density of geometrically necessary dislocations in the WQ specimen. Meanwhile, most cracks initiated at either rolling or transverse direction during the stretch flangeability test regardless of the martensitic morphology. It was attributed to the highest average normal anisotropy in the direction of 45° to rolling direction.

The studies were performed on dissimilar ferritic/austenitic weldments between 9Cr tempered martensitic steels of the grades either P/T 91 or 92 and unstabilised AISI316H austenitic steel. The welded joints were fabricated using the fusion welding by tungsten inert gas (TIG) method with Ni-based filler metal. Microstructural analyses were performed using light and electron microscopy. Microstructural gradient in heat-affected zone (HAZ) of 9Cr steels remained preserved during creep exposure. All weldments fractured by the type IV failure within their intercritical HAZ (ICHAZ) regions. The most remarkable microstructural change during creep was the precipitation of intermetallic Laves phase. Experimentally determined phases of the samples after creep exposure are in good agreement with equilibrium thermodynamic calculations.

The paper examines the problem of an axially symmetric I-cored coil located above a three-layered plate with a hole in the middle layer. A cylindrical coordinate system was applied, wherein the solution domain was truncated in the radial direction. The employment of the truncated region eigenfunction expansion (TREE) method resulted in deriving the final formulas for the change of the coil impedance with regard to the air space, and also pertaining to the test object without a flaw. Formulas for various configurations of the test object, among others for a surface hole, a subsurface hole and a through hole, have been presented. For the purpose of defectoscopy, the influence of the hole in the plate on the impedance components was investigated. The calculations were made in Matlab for frequencies from 100 Hz to 50 kHz. The obtained results were verified using the finite element method (FEM) in Comsol Multiphysics package. A very good agreement was observed in the case of both the resistance and reactance.

A detailed elasto-gasdynamic model of a preloaded three-pad air foil journal bearing is presented. Bump and top foil deflections are herein calculated with a nonlinear beamshell theory according to Reissner. The 2D pressure distribution in each bearing pad is described by the Reynolds equation for compressible fluids. With this model, the influence of the assembly preload on the static bearing hysteresis as well as on the aerodynamic bearing performance is investigated. For the purpose of model validation, the predicted hysteresis curves are compared with measured curves. The numerically predicted and the measured hysteresis curves show a good agreement. The numerical predictions exhibit that the assembly preload increases the bearing stiffness (in particular for moderate shaft displacements) and the bearing damping.

The authors simulated the industrially used continuous annealing conditions to process dual phase (DP) steels by using a custom designed annealing simulator. Sixty-seven percentage of cold rolled steel sheets was subjected to different processing routes, including the conventional continuous annealing line (CAL), intercritical annealing (ICA), and thermal cycling (TC), to investigate the effect of change in volume fraction, shape, and spatial distribution of martensite on tensile deformation characteristics of DP steels. Annealing parameters were derived using commercial software, including thermo-calc, jmat-pro, and dictra. Through selection of appropriate process parameters, the authors found out possibilities of significantly altering the volume fraction, morphology, and grain size distribution of martensite phase. These constituent variations showed a strong influence on tensile properties of DP steels. It was observed that TC route modified the martensite morphology from the typical lath type to in-grain globular/oblong type and significantly reduced the martensite grain size. This route improved the strength–ductility combination from 590 MPa–33% (obtained through CAL route) to 660 MPa–30%. Finally, the underlying mechanisms of crack initiation/void formation, etc., in different DP microstructures were discussed.
