Berry fruits are well known to contain large amounts of polyphenol compounds. Among them, flavan-3-ol derivatives are a group of secondary metabolism compounds currently attracting a great deal of attention owing to their health benefits. Not only the fruits, but also the leaves of raspberry plants, are highly esteemed for tea making around the world and are largely used for food. In this report, we discuss the results of our study on the effect of light and temperature on polyphenol accumulation in raspberry leaves. When raspberry was cultivated in a plant factory unit and light intensity, wavelength, and temperature were varied, the amount of total polyphenol increased under blue light. Quantitative determination of (+)-catechin, (–)-epicatechin, procyanidin B4, flavan-3-ol trimer, which are flavan-3-ol derivatives, was carried out using HPLC, whereby we confirmed their increase under blue light. Semi-quantitative RT-PCR showed correlation between chalcone synthase (CHS) gene expression and the amounts of the compounds measured in the leaves.

Abstract Introduction HCV is a health problem that confronts many countries in the world. Those patients will develop complications like cirrhosis and HCC, which is one of the most common cancers in the world, especially in Egypt, and considered the third leading cause of death worldwide. The prognosis of HCC is still dismal due to the late diagnosis. miRNAs are small, short noncoding RNAs, which have roles in the diagnosis of HCC. In our study, we focus on biological aspects of miRNAs. We report that miR-501 is strongly expressed and observed in the process of HCC development. miR-501 regulation is important as an oncofetal relevant to the diagnosis of HCC. Method This study was conducted on 100 adult patients; 25 patients were positive for anti-HCV and 25 patients were negative for HCV and enrolled as a control group. Patients were categorized into three groups: fibrosis (n = 25), CHC (n = 25), and HCC (n = 25) related to HCV evident by CT abdomen. All patients and controls were subjected to full clinical assessment and laboratory investigation. Blood (8 mL) was withdrawn from subjects, and 3 mL was collected in EDTA tubes for processing total RNA extraction and miRNA. The remaining 5 mL was left for determination of biochemical parameters. miRN-501 expression levels were determined by RT-PCR. Results The data revealed a significant increase in levels of AST, ALT, ALP, and CBC in both HCC and CHC groups compared to controls. The results of miRNA expression showed that miR-501 was higher in the HCC group than non-HCC group at P1.1. Conclusion miR-501 can be used as a noninvasive biomarker for early diagnosis of HCC among patients with HCV on account of its affectability for HCC.

Aims: The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic continue around the world. Imaging methods play an important role in the diagnosis of COVID-19. The aim of this study was to develop a system that would allow for the distinguishing of lesions at different stages of the disease based on similar signs of other viral diseases and monitoring the emergence, progression, and/or remission of lesions in different areas of the lungs. Methods: For the deep learning (DL) system, the thoracic CT images from 1,382 images were reviewed. These belonged to patients whose SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR tests turned out positive, were diagnosed with COVID-19, and had signs of lung involvement. Of 1,382 images in the dataset, 180 were assigned for testing and 1,202 were assigned for training. Apart from our dataset, 131 images for internal testing and 1,365 images for external testing were used. The trainings were continued to cover 316,000 steps. Results: Internal and external analyses were used to assess the developed model. The internal analysis success rate was 93.12%. For first external analysis we used 85 images. In the first external analysis we assessed a single CT image of each patient who was in the mixed image lists, and the success rate was found to be 70.31%. In the second external analysis, 645 thoracic CT images of patients diagnosed with COVID-19 and 635 images of another patients who had signs of non-COVID-19 diseases were used. We assessed the thoracic CT images with both COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 disease signs. The success rate in the identification of COVID-19 patients was 88.4%. Conclusion: Special modeling systems developed using DL may help accelerate workflow and making the process easier. This is especially important in cases in which fast and accurate assessment is essential for of a large number of patients, as happens in a pandemic.

The article summarizes the main approaches in the definition of business valuation the economic entity. In the process of business valuation, taking into account the risks of financial and economic activities necessary to obtain information on what stage the owner implements the business will receive income. The most difficult task is the impossibility of accurate prediction in determining the level of income and the determination of a discount rate capitalization of future incomes due to the instability of the economy, both in the country and around the world.

Gluten-free products based on starch and hydrocolloids are deficient in nutrients and do not contain pro-health substances. Therefore, they should be enriched in raw materials naturally rich in antioxidants, especially if they are intended for celiac patients, prone to high oxidative stress. Apart from the traditionally used pseudo-cereals, seeds, vegetables and fruits, innovative substrates such as the by-product (especially in Poland) dry apple pomace could be applied. The study material consisted of gluten-free bread enriched with apple pomace. The content of individual polyphenols, the content of total polyphenol and flavonoids, and also the antioxidant potential of the bread were determined by the UPLC-PDA-MS/MS methods. It was observed that apple pomace was a natural concentrate of bioactive substances from the group of polyphenols. In summary, gluten-free bread with 5% content of apple pomace showed the highest organoleptic scores and contained high levels of phenolic compounds. The values of total phenolic content, and the amounts of flavonoids, phenolic acids and phloridzin in this bread were 2.5, 8, 4 and 21 times higher in comparison to control.

The number of consumers with green awareness have grown these days and as a result they have turned to purchase eco-friendly products. For this reason, this study aims to propose a method for eco-design based on the anticipatory failure determination method to develop eco-design products. By using eco-design concepts adopted from the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, the process will limit the failures and issues related to environmental impact in product design. The proposed method for eco-design product in this study follows the following procedure. First, we analyze product failure. Second, we propose the determination of the non-green phenomenon of the failure. Thirdly, we integrate the intensified non-green phenomenon to generate non-green hypotheses and fourthly, we eliminate each non-green phenomenon hypothesis by introducing the contradiction matrix of TRIZ for obtaining solutions. Finally, we assess alternative eco-design solutions by evaluation. To verify the practicality of the new procedure, a washing machine is used as an example for illustration.

AbstractThe hypocotyls of germinating seedlings elongate in a search for light to enable autotrophic sugar production. Upon exposure to light, photoreceptors that are activated by blue and red light halt elongation by preventing the degradation of the hypocotyl-elongation inhibitor HY5 and by inhibiting the activity of the elongation-promoting transcription factors PIFs. The question of how sugar affects hypocotyl elongation and which cell types stimulate and stop that elongation remains unresolved. We found that overexpression of a sugar sensor, Arabidopsis hexokinase 1 (HXK1), in guard cells promotes hypocotyl elongation under white and blue light through PIF4. Furthermore, expression of PIF4 in guard cells is sufficient to promote hypocotyl elongation in the light, while expression of HY5 in guard cells is sufficient to inhibit the elongation of the hy5 mutant and the elongation stimulated by HXK1. HY5 exits the guard cells and inhibits hypocotyl elongation, but is degraded in the dark. We also show that the inhibition of hypocotyl elongation by guard cells’ HY5 involves auto-activation of HY5 expression in other tissues. It appears that guard cells are capable of coordinating hypocotyl elongation and that sugar and HXK1 have the opposite effect of light on hypocotyl elongation, converging at PIF4.

Some manufacturers of 3D digitizing systems are developing and market more accurate, fastest and affordable systems of fringe projection based on blue light technology. The aim of the present work is the determination of the quality and accuracy of the data provided by the LED structured light scanner Comet L3D (Steinbichler). The quality and accuracy of the cloud of points produced by the scanner is determined by measuring a number of gauge blocks of different sizes. The accuracy range of the scanner has been established through multiple digitizations showing the dependence on different factors such as the characteristics of the object and scanning procedure. Although many factors influence, accuracies announced by manufacturer have been achieved under optimal conditions and it has been noted that the quality of the point clouds (density, noise, dispersion of points) provided by this system is higher than that obtained with laser technology devices.
