Cold sores are nasolabial blisters caused by herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections. Novel therapies demonstrating simultaneously antiviral activity and improved wound healing are warranted. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of medical-grade honey (MGH) for treating HSV-induced cold sores. A crossover trial was performed in patients with recurrent cold sores (n = 29). The majority (65.6%) of these patients experience four or more episodes per year, thus forming a valid self-control group. In this study, patients applied an MGH-based formulation (L-Mesitran Soft) on their cold sore at the onset of symptoms (62.1%) or appearing of blister (37.9%) and compared it to their conventional treatments. After complete healing, patients filled in a questionnaire evaluating healing, pain, and itching. The average absolute healing time was 72.4% slower with conventional treatment (10.0 days) compared to MGH (5.8 days). After MGH treatment, 86.2% of all patients experienced faster objective healing (6.9% similar and 6.9% slower) and the subjective healing score was higher in 79.3% of the patients (20.7% similar). If the patients normally experience pain and itching during their cold sores, these levels were lower with MGH therapy compared to conventional treatment in 72.7% and 71.4% of the patients, respectively. Moreover, 100% of the patients prefer MGH treatment over conventional treatment and will use it again on future cold sores. MGH is a promising alternative treatment for cold sores, likely by combining both increased antiviral and wound healing activities while alleviating pain and itching.

In the last few decades, the incidence of caesarean section is increasing in the world, especially in Indonesia. One of the way to treat tissue scar is through biologic and synthetic dressing where nowadays, amnion has been used as biologic dressing frequently. This study was conducted to determine the effect of the use of fresh amniotic membrane on wound incision Caesarean section compared with Caesarean section incision wound covered using regular gauze bandages and fixated with plaster in RS. Dr. Reksodiwiryo Padang. The design of this study is an experimen-tal study with Post test design with control group design. Sampling was done using a formula consecutive sampling two different test samples obtained an average of 72 people for each group. The analysis used include univariate and bivariate analyzes. The average wound healing time the difference was statistically significant (p value <0.05) in the treatment and control groups. There was highly significant difference in the proportion of local infection on day 3 between the treatment and control groups (p value <0.05). There were very significant differences in the proportion of local allergic reactions at day 3, and 5 between the treatment and control group (p <0.05). There are significant differences in terms of the cost of care per day between treatment and control groups (p <0.05). The aim of this paper was to evaluate the effect of using artificial dermis matrix plus autologous split-thickness skin (ADM and ASTS) in the treatment of deep-burns in hands of severely burned patients?We recruited a total of 58 patients with large area burns greater than 80% that were eschar-excised. Twenty-eight of them were treated with ADM and ASTS (test group); 30 were treated with autologous medium-thickness skin (AMTS) (control group). The healing time of the hand wound was noted, clinical and photographic evaluations were performed, and a Jebsen-Taylor hand function test was compared and analyzed in the two groups. The wound healing time in the test group (24.22?3.34 days) were longer than that of the control group (13.42?3.36 days) and statistically significant. The healing time of skin graft donor sites was shorter than that of the control group (7.14?1.63 vs. 14.28?2.37 days) and statistically significant (P<0.05). The 3rd and 6th month follow-up with clinical and functional evaluations revealed no differences between the two groups. In addition, there was no obvious scar formation and less pigmentation in either group. The repair of deeply burned hands with artificial dermis matrix was beneficial to both wound healing and the donor site, and was beneficial to the whole body rehabilitation of severely burned patients.

IntroductionWorldwide, about 90% of people are infected with the herpes simplex virus, 30% of whom will experience recurrent herpes simplex labialis, commonly referred to as ‘cold sores’, which can last up to 10 days. The most common treatment is aciclovir cream which reduces healing time by just half a day compared with no specific treatment. This is a protocol for a randomised controlled trial (RCT) to determine the efficacy of medical grade kanuka honey-based topical treatment (Honevo) in reducing the healing time and pain of cold sores, compared with topical aciclovir treatment (Viraban).Methods and analysisThis open-label, parallel-group, active comparator superiority RCT will compare the efficacy of medical grade kanuka honey with 5% aciclovir cream in the treatment of cold sores in the setting of a pharmacy research network of 60 sites throughout New Zealand. Adults presenting with a cold sore (N=950) will be randomised by pharmacy-based investigators. The pharmacy-based investigators will dispense the investigational product to randomised participants and both study groups apply the treatment five times daily until their skin returns to normal or for 14 days, whichever occurs first. In response to a daily SMS message, participants complete an assessment of their cold sore healing, with reference to a visual guide, and transmit it to the investigators by a smartphone eDiary in real time. The primary outcome variable is time (in days) from randomisation to return to normal skin. Secondary endpoints include total healing time stratified by stage of the lesion at onset of treatment, highest pain severity and time to pain resolution.Ethics and disseminationNew Zealand Ethics Registration 15/NTB/93. Reduction of the wound healing time after surgical procedures along with good hemostasis, and the reduction of post-surgical edema, pain and infective complications are generally desirable to both clinicians and patients. Recently, a gel compound containing sodium hyaluronate and four synthetic aminoacids (glycine, leucine, proline, lysine) and marketed as Aminogam® (Errekappa Euroterapici, Italy), has been proposed as a medical device promoting faster wound healing after oral surgery procedures. To assess its achievable clinical benefits, we studied retrospectively 580 cases (290 study cases and 290 control cases) undergoing oral surgery and receiving Aminogam ® gel application. More precisely, cases were divided into 7 groups on the bases of the kind of surgery (teeth extraction, oral surgery in patients taking bisphosphonates, surgical treatment of jaw osteonecrosis related to bisphosphonates therapy, placement of endosseous implants, diode laser surgery of oral mucosa lesions with second intention healing without stitches, diode laser photocoagulation of slow flow vascular malformations and bone surgery). In all instances, Aminogam® gel was applied at least five times a day until the wound healed completely. We compared the elapsed time between surgery and complete healing with Aminogam® application compared to control cases receiving no other drug treatment. Our results confirmed that the overall time of healing is certainly reduced in cases receiving Aminogam® gel regardless of the kind of oral surgery.

Childbirth is a natural process, but sometimes labor can also cause birth canaltrauma, especially in the aluminum region, this trauma can be injuries to the periniumarea, the cause can be intentional biases such as episiotomy or unintentional actions such as spontaneous tears in the process of removing the baby. Injury to the perineum if not treated properly can cause postpartum infection because the wound area will be a medium for developing germs. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of the use of breast milk in the treatment of periniem wounds with the duration of perinium wound healing at the Ramlah Parjib Clinic in Samarinda. The method used in this study was Posttest Only Control Group Desigen research subjects were postpartum motherswith a sample of 60 respondents taken by random sampling and grouped based on treatment using ASI. Data analysis using ANOVA test. The results showed that the use of ASI had a significant effect on the treatment of periniem wounds with a healing time seen from the P value of 0,000. Conclusion: Periniuem wound care techniques are factors that influence the duration of perinieum wound healing

Abstract Background: Hydrogen-rich water (HRW) has been shown to be one of underlying therapeutic strategies regarding wound treatments. This study explored the effects of drinking HRW on skin wound healing in dogs. Eight circular wounds were analyzed in each dog. The experimental group was treated with HRW twice daily, while the control group was provided with distilled water (DW). The wound tissues of dogs examined histopathologically. The fibroblasts, inflammatory cell infiltration, the average number of new blood vessels, and the level of malondialdehyde (MDA) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity in the skin homogenate of the wound was measured using the corresponding kits. The expression of Nrf-2, HO-1, NQO-1, VEGF, and PDGF were measured by real-time fluorescence quantitative method. Results: We observed that HRW wound had significant average healing rate and faster average healing time. Histopathological results showed that the average number of blood vessels and the average thickness of epidermis were significantly different from the DW group. The MDA levels were higher in the DW group than in the HRW group but the SOD levels were higher in the HRW group than in the DW group. The results of qRT-PCR showed that the expression of each gene was significantly different between the two groups. Conclusions: The results showed that HRW treatment could promote skin wound healing in dogs, accelerate wound epithelization, reduce inflammatory reaction, stimulate the expression of cytokines related to wound healing, and shorten wound healing time.

This study was carried out to explore the effect of Aloe Vera leafgel in promoting wound healing and to investigate theantibacterial effect against some pathogenic bacteria in comparisonwith Nigella sativa oil. Standard dilutions of Aloe Vera leaf gel weremade from ten to one hundred percent and its antibacterial effecthad been examined in seeded agar method against Staphylococcusaureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa both were previously identifiedby laboratory and biochemical methods, Nigella Sativa oil which isknown to be one of the important medicinal plant was used forcomparison . Statistical analysis showed a significant difference(P<0.05) between AVG and Nigella Sativa oil.The effect of Aloe Vera leaf gel against Staph .aureus was morepotent than against Pseudomonas aeruginosa. There was aproportional relation between different concentrations of AVGwith the values of inhibition zones diameters of the bacteria.Results showed that Aloe Vera was more potent than Nigella sativaagainst both bacteria.The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) was sixtymg/ml and the Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) waseighty mg/ml for Staph .aureus.In order to investigate the effect of Aloe Vera gel on woundhealing, twenty-four local male rabbits were used. They weredivided into four equal groups and each animal was wounded inboth sides of the back region by making a one by two centimetersquare standard longitudinal incision with surgical scalpel. Thefirst group was a control group (wounded without treatment); thisgroup was employed to observe the normal wound healing. Thesecond group was treated with crude Aloe Vera leaf gel twice dailyfor 10 days. While the third group was wounded and infected withthe pathogenic bacteria Staphylococcus vaureus without treatment,in order to observe the natural body defense against pathogenicmicroorganisms. The last group was infected with the samebacteria but treated with crude Aloe Vera leaf gel to observe theantibacterial effect. The wounds in the left side in second andfourth group were left as self-control.

Introduction: Verneuil disease, or perianal hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), is a chronic suppurative disease with a tendency to develop sinus formation, fibrosis, and sclerosis, having a great impact on quality of life. HS affect the apocrine sweat glands or sebaceous glands and may arise in each of the regions where the apocrine glands are prominent: the axilla, breast aureole, umbilicus, perineum, groin, and buttocks. We present here moderate and extensive HS cases, with their respective treatment methods and outcomes. Methods: A retrospective re-view of 6 patients? medical records from January 2001 to December 2010. Results: The 6 patients underwent treatment for HS in the gluteal and perianal regions with surgical excision. Five of the patients were male (83%). The median age was 42.5 years. We performed a total of 8 operations on these patients. In 3 patients, the wound was left open for secondary healing, and the mean time for complete wound healing was 11.3 weeks (range: 9.5-19 weeks). Delayed skin grafting was used for 2 patients in whom the wounds had been left open after the first operation. In this group, complete wound healing took 2 months in total. One patient underwent primary wound closure using rotation flaps, with a complete healing time of 2 weeks. Successful treatment without recurrence was accomplished in 5 (83.3%) of the patients. Conclusion: The conservative treatment methods had little effect, particularly on gluteal and perianal/perineal HS. The only successful treatment was wide surgical excision. Management of the wound after wide excision should be tailored to the individual patient.

Diabetic ulcers are at risk of becoming chronic and infected, as diabetics have hampered vascular structures, limiting oxygen and nutrient supply. These wounds can lead to pain, malodor, functional problems, and amputation. The current rise in antibiotic resistance demands for complementary therapies. Medical-grade honey (MGH) forms an attractive option because of its antimicrobial and pro-healing properties. We aim to show the beneficial effects of MGH in infected diabetic ulcers. We present six patients with infected diabetic ulcers, of which some were at risk of (further) amputation. Previous treatments with antibiotics, silver and alginate dressings, surgical closure, and maggot therapy were ineffective; therefore, the treatment was switched to the application of MGH. MGH therapy typically reduced the malodor in a couple of days and controlled infection within 2–3 weeks. MGH also enhanced wound healing by promoting granulation tissue formation, angiogenesis, and re-epithelialization, by decreasing inflammatory and oxidative stress and providing nutrients. Together, wound healing was enhanced, and the patient’s quality of life improved. MGH is safe and cost-effective for treating complicated diabetic wounds with (antibiotic-resistant) infections and at risk of amputation. MGH forms a promising alternative or complementary therapy to replace antibiotics for treating locally infected wounds.

AbstractBasic experiments have demonstrated that the effect of wound healing in moist environments is better than that in dry environments; therefore, research on moist dressing is the focus of wound healing research. 42 burn patients receiving treatment in Jiangsu Provincial People’s Hospital were selected as experimental cases. Wound surface is divided into treatment group and control group using a self-contrasted method. The treatment group received a moist dressing in the treatment of burn wounds and the control group adopted iodine gauze or Vaseline gauze coverage. Wound healing effect and the impact on the degree of pain of in the two different treatment methods were observed after treatment. The results of 42 patients were included in the analysis. The average healing time of patients’ burn wounds in treatment group is (10.9 3.3) d, and the average healing time in control group is (13.8 3.6) d, so, the difference is significant (P<0.01). Wound pain in the treatment group is significantly lower than that in the control group (P<0.01). Using moist dressing (Mepitel and Mepilex, etc.) in the treatment of burn wounds, woundhealing time can be shortened and wound pain can be reduced significantly.
