The promulgation of the encyclical letter Laudato si’ by Pope Francis in 2015 has been interpreted as the final phase in the integration of sustainability concerns into Catholic Social Teaching. In this recent historical development, academic research has paid particular attention to how different eco-theological traditions, sociocultural developments, and local advocacy practices influenced the Church’s ecological turn. However, the key role played by non-magisterial, intermediate institutions, particularly highly qualified interlocutors such as the Pontifical Academy of Sciences (PAS), has not been studied in depth. This article argues that, over the past 60 years, the PAS has been instrumental in this development: Raising awareness on socio-environmental issues, promoting environmental literacy, fostering ethical reflection, and catalyzing interdisciplinary dialogue in order to orient policy.

Alexey Malashenko is one of the most famous modern Russian Arabists and Islamic scholars. He is the author of numerous Russian, English, French, and Arabic works on political Islam, political processes in the Middle East, and the post-Soviet space. Among them: “The official ideology of modern Algeria” (Moscow: Nauka, 1983); “Islamic Renaissance in Contemporary Russia” (Moscow: Carnegie Moscow Center, 1998); “My Islam” (Moscow: ROSSPEN, 2010) and others. His career in academic research started at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences. For many years he was a member of the scientific council and chairman of the “Religion, Society and Security” program of the Carnegie Moscow Center. Today he leads scientific research at The Dialogue of Civilizations Research Institute. In connection with the anniversary of the scientist, a representative of another generation of Arabists, head of the Center for Arab and Islamic Studies of the Institute of Oriental Studies RAS Vasily Kuznetsov, decided to talk with Aleksey Malashenko about his teachers, colleagues, and students, about Arab and Islamic studies, about the development of Russian oriental studies over the past few decades.

The 2018 Nobel Economics Prize was awarded to two American economists - William D. Nordhaus and Paul M. Romer - who designed methods for better assessing environmental issues and technological advances on growth. This year’s Laureates, Nordhaus was the first person to create an intergrated model to assess interactions between society and nature and Romer laid the foundation for what is now called endogenous growth theory. According to the Swedish Royal Academy of Sciences, these two macroeconomists’ research have helped “significantly broaden the scope of economic analysis by constructing models that explain how the market economy interacts with nature and knowledge” which integrates climate change measures into long-term sustainable economic growth. The article is dedicated to Pavel A. Stunzhas, a highly qualified specialist in the field of Marine Hydrochemistry, a graduate from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology. He was a Senior Researcher at the Laboratory of Biohydrochemistry at the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology Russian Academy of Sciences, PhD on Physics and Mathematics sciences. July 2, 2020, he celebrated his 80th birthday, but by the will of fate and COVD'19, he suddenly passed away on October 29 of this year. He worked at the Institute of Oceanology for 46 years – from the first to the last days of his life.

The reclamation complex of the Nonchernozem zone of Russia has been under the influence of a combination of unfavourable factors for a long time. The problems of scientific and staff support today limit the development of the complex and create risks for the successful implementation of the Federal Target Program "Development of Land Reclamation". In order to analyze the situation and find the right solutions, a study was carried out using the method of expert assessments. Twenty-four highly qualified specialists took part in it: 2 Academicians of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 4 Corresponding Members of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 10 Doctors of Sciences and 9 Candidates of Sciences. To preserve and build up the agro-resource potential within the framework of the Federal Target Program "Development of Land Reclamation" in the next decade, it is necessary to develop 300-400 thousand hectares of shrubby fallow, to carry out major repairs of drainage systems on an area of up to 300 thousand hectares and their reconstruction on an area of up to 100 thousand hectares, carry out chemical reclamation on an area of up to 5 million hectares on average per year. The need for qualified personnel to solve these problems will amount to 18–20 thousand professional workers and up to 5 thousand specialists, including 1.0 thousand people in research and development, 1.5 thousand people in exploration and design sphere, 2.5 thousand people in the construction and operational sphere. The fundamental importance belongs to the scientific support of the innovative reclamation complex, the renewal of which should be carried out on the principles of resource and energy conservation, nature likeness, informational support and digitalization of management processes.

Due to special properties of ILs (Ionic Liquids) like their wide liquid range, good solvating ability, negligible vapour pressure, non-inflammability, environment friendly medium, high thermal stability, easy recycling and rate promoters etc. they are used in organic synthesis. The investigation for the replacement of organic solvents in organic synthesis is a growing area of interest due to increasing environmental issues. Therefore, ionic liquids have attracted the attention of chemists and act as a catalyst and reaction medium in organic reaction with high activity. There is no doubt that ionic liquids have become a major subject of study for modern chemistry. In comparison to traditional processes the use of ionic liquids resulted in improved, complimentary or alternative selectivities in organic synthesis. The present manuscript reported the synthesis of multiple nitrogen containing five-membered heterocyclic compounds using ionic liquids. This review covered interesting discoveries in the past few years.

The movement, in turn, reflects this millions-strong support in its diversity, encompassing a wide spectrum of causes, groups, and sometimes conflicting special interests. For far-sighted activists and policy makers, the question is how this diversity affects the ability to achieve key goals in the battle against pollution, erosion, and out-of-control growth. This chapter introduces ‘the problem’ of meaningless research in the social sciences. Over the past twenty years there has been an enormous growth in research publications, but never before in the history of humanity have so many social scientists written so much to so little effect. Academic research in the social sciences is often inward looking, addressed to small tribes of fellow researchers, and its purpose in what is increasingly a game is that of getting published in a prestigious journal. A wide gap has emerged between the esoteric concerns of social science researchers and the pressing issues facing today’s societies. The chapter critiques the inaccessibility of the language used by academic researchers, and the formulaic qualities of most research papers, fostered by the demands of the publishing game. It calls for a radical move from research for the sake of publishing to research that has something meaningful to say.

This book provides the qualitative research community with some insight on how to evaluate the quality of qualitative research. This topic has gained little attention during the past few decades. We, qualitative researchers, read journal articles, serve on masters’ and doctoral committees, and also make decisions on whether conference proposals, manuscripts, or large-scale grant proposals should be accepted or rejected. It is assumed that various perspectives or criteria, depending on various paradigms, theories, or fields of discipline, have been used in assessing the quality of qualitative research. Nonetheless, until now, no textbook has been specifically devoted to exploring theories, practices, and reflections associated with the evaluation of qualitative research. This book constructs a typology of evaluating qualitative research, examines actual information from websites and qualitative journal editors, and reflects on some challenges that are currently encountered by the qualitative research community. Many different kinds of journals’ review guidelines and available assessment tools are collected and analyzed. Consequently, core criteria that stand out among these evaluation tools are presented. Readers are invited to join the author to confidently proclaim: “Fortunately, there are commonly agreed, bold standards for evaluating the goodness of qualitative research in the academic research community. These standards are a part of what is generally called ‘scientific research.’ ”

The number of data sources available for academic research on retirement economics and policy has increased rapidly in the past two decades. Data quality and comparability across studies have also improved considerably, with survey questionnaires progressively converging towards common ways of eliciting the same measurable concepts. Probability-based Internet panels have become a more accepted and recognized tool to obtain research data, allowing for fast, flexible, and cost-effective data collection compared to more traditional modes such as in-person and phone interviews. In an era of big data, academic research has also increasingly been able to access administrative records (e.g., Kostøl and Mogstad, 2014; Cesarini et al., 2016), private-sector financial records (e.g., Gelman et al., 2014), and administrative data married with surveys (Ameriks et al., 2020), to answer questions that could not be successfully tackled otherwise.

A smart helmet is a wearable device that has attracted attention in various fields, especially in applied sciences, where extensive studies have been conducted in the past decade. In this study, the current status and trends of smart helmet research were systematically reviewed. Five research questions were set to investigate the research status of smart helmets according to the year and application field, as well as the trend of smart helmet development in terms of types of sensors, microcontrollers, and wireless communication technology. A total of 103 academic research articles published in the past 11 years (2009–2020) were analyzed to address the research questions. The results showed that the number of smart helmet applications reported in literature has been increasing rapidly since 2018. The applications have focused mostly on ensuring the safety of motorcyclists. A single-board-based modular concept unit, such as the Arduino board, and sensor for monitoring human health have been used the most for developing smart helmets. Approximately 85% of smart helmets have been developed to date using wireless communication technology to transmit data obtained from smart helmets to other smart devices or cloud servers.
