With the development of new technologies and applications, such as the Internet of Things, smart cities, 5G, and edge computing, traditional Internet Protocol-based (IP-based) networks have been exposed as having many problems. Information-Centric Networking (ICN), Named Data Networking (NDN), and Content-Centric Networking (CCN) are therefore proposed as an alternative for future networks. However, unlike IP-based networks, CCN routing is non-deterministic and difficult to optimize due to frequent in-network caching replacement. This paper presents a novel probe-based routing algorithm that explores real-time in-network caching to ensure the routing table storing the optimal paths to the nearest content provider is up to date. Effective probe-selections, Pending Interest Table (PIT) probe, and Forwarding Information Base (FIB) probe are discussed and analyzed by simulation with different performance measurements. Compared with the basic CCN, in terms of qualitative analysis, the additional computational overhead of our approach is O(NCS + Nrt + NFIB ∗ NSPT) and O(NFIB) on processing interest packets and data packets, respectively. However, in terms of quantitative analysis, our approach reduces the number of timeout interests by 6% and the average response time by 0.6 s. Furthermore, although basic CCN and our approach belong to the same Quality of Service (QoS) category, our approach outperforms basic CCN in terms of real values. Additionally, our probe-based approach performs better than RECIF+PIF and EEGPR. Owing to speedup FIB updating by probes, our approach provides more reliable interest packet routing when accounting for router failures. In summary, the results demonstrate that compared to basic CCN, our probe-based routing approach raises FIB accuracy and reduces network congestion and response time, resulting in efficient routing.

Increasing focus on sustainable societies and ‘smart cities’ due to emphasis on mitigation of climate change is simultaneous with ‘smart regulation’ reaching the forefront of the political agenda. Consequently, the energy sector and its regulation are undergoing significant innovation and change. Energy innovations include transition from fossil fuels to more renewable energy sources and application of new computer technology, interactively matching production with consumer demand. Smart cities are growing and projects are being initiated for development of urban areas and energy systems. Analysis from ‘Smart Cities Accelerator’, developed under the EU Interreg funding programme that includes Climate-KIC,——provides background for the focus on a smart energy system. Analysis ensures the energy supply systems support the integration of renewables with the need for new technologies and investments. ‘Smart’ is trendy, but when becoming ‘smart’ leads to motivation that is an important step towards mitigating climate change.

The Internet of Things (IoT) applications has been developing greatly in recent years to solve communication problems, especially in rural areas. Within the IoT, the context-awareness paradigm, especially in precision agricultural practices, has come to a state of the planning of production time. As smart cities approach, the smart environment approach also increases its place in IoT applications and has dominated research in recent years in literature. In this study, soil and environmental information were collected in 17 km diameter in rural area with developed Long Range (LoRa) based context-aware platform. With the developed sensor and actuator control unit, soil moisture at 5 cm and 30 cm depth and soil surface temperature information were collected and the communication performance was investigated. During the study, the performance measurements of the developed Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) enabled Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) gateway were also performed.

ABSTRACTInternet of Things (IoT) is a technological paradigm and one of the most important tendency of TI nowadays, it is having a broad scope of research in the most different areas. IoT is playing an important role in the concept of smart cities, smart grid, smart health monitoring, smart clothes, preventive maintenance, etc. The IoT contribution to cities in order to make them intelligent, creates a hall of possibilities where there is almost no limit. The knowledge of this topic was presented to the students of the discipline Advanced Topics in Computer Networks. Unorthodoxly and using new technologies, resulted in the project “Vou de ônibus”. The project, aims to optimize public resources, used in the transportation of university students between two cities in the interior of Brazil, provided daily to academics by one of the local city hall. The project has the goal to determine the partial number of students that will use the transportation on a certain day of the week.RESUMOInternet of Things (IoT) é um paradigma tecnológico e uma das tendências de TI mais importantes da atualidade, tendo amplo escopo de pesquisa nas mais diversas áreas. IoT está desempenhando um papel importante no conceito de cidades inteligentes, smart grid, monitoramento de saúde inteligente, roupas inteligentes, manutenção preditiva, etc. A contribuição da IoT para cidades, com finalidade de torná-las inteligentes cria um hall de possibilidades onde quase não há limite. O conhecimento deste tema foi apresentado aos alunos da Disciplina de Tópicos Avançados em Redes de Computadores, de forma não ortodoxa e utilizando novas tecnologias, tendo como resultado o projeto “Vou de ônibus”. O projeto, visa otimizar recursos públicos, utilizados no transporte de universitários entre duas cidades no interior do Brasil, fornecido diariamente aos acadêmicos locais por uma das prefeituras. Tendo como objetivo determinar o número parcial de alunos que irá utilizar o transporte em determinado dia da semana.

The article is devoted to the study of cyber security problems in the Smart Cities system. The development of the IT industry has led to the introduction of new technologies into our lives. One of these technologies is the Internet of Things technology. The application of IoT technology has increased in recent years. One of the most important areas in which Internet of Things technology is applied is the Smart Cities system. The main difference between smart cities and other cities is that their components are connected to each other via the Internet. All these smart devices create a smart city system in general. One of the biggest and most important problems in many areas where the Internet is used is security. The article looks at possible security problems in the system of smart cities and solutions to ensure cyber security. Antnet is a software agent-based routing algorithm that is influenced by the unsophisticated and individual ant’s emergent behaviour. The aim of this chapter is twofold, firstly to introduce improvements to the antnet routing algorithm and then to critically review the work that is done around antnet and reinforcement learning in routing applications. In this chapter a modified antnet algorithm for packet-based networks has been proposed, which offers improvement in the throughput and the average delay by detecting and dropping packets routed through the non-optimal routes. The effect of traffic fluctuations has been limited by applying boundaries to the reinforcement parameter. The round trip feedback information supplied by the software agents is reinforced by updated probability entries in the distance vector table. In addition, link usage information is also used to prevent stagnation problems. Also discussed is antnet with multiple ant colonies applied to packet switched networks. Simulation results show that the average delay experienced by data packets is reduced for evaporation for all cases when non-uniform traffic model traffic is used. However, there is no performance gain on the uniform traffic models. In addition, multiple ant colonies are applied to the packet switched networks, and results are compared with the other approaches. Results show that the throughput could be increased when compared to other schemes, but with no gain in the average packet delay time.

With a rapidly growing world population, urban populations are estimated to increase significantly over the next decades. This trend is reason for concern since the planet's resources are limited, and climate change is inherent. This chapter focusses on the question about whether new technologies employed in smart cities can be the answer to current and future needs of a city population. Cutting-edge technological advances are reshaping our ecosystem; transforming society, living, and work environments; transport systems; energy grids; healthcare; communications; businesses; and education. How can cities respond to the multitude of challenges by employing technology and at the same time ensure the public well-being, improve the quality of life of city inhabitants, and make sure that the human is still at the center of decisions?

The issue of sustainability of smart cities is approached in this chapter from two different angles: dimensions sector-specific and city governance. Following a short review of smart city sectors, emphasis is placed on the concept of smart governance of cities. The concept of smart governance is reviewed especially regarding cooperation with city governments of other cities within the region or country and empowering citizens. Different levels are presented with focus on four main conditions for smart governance, namely participation in decision-making, public and social services, transparent governance, and political strategies and perspectives. The chapter presents sustainability of smart governance through a paradigm of sustainability as an effectual model based on sustainability, wellbeing, productivity, and resilience. Finally, the chapter addresses the success criteria of sustainable smart cities regarding different aspects, such open data, agility to new technologies, cross-sectoral harmonization, and careful policy, strategy, and program alignment.
