Both biotic and abiotic environmental filters drive the occurrence, distribution, and persistence of plant species. Amongst drivers that influence the distribution of plants in harsh environments, seed predation and temperature are particularly important in habitats that are prone to fire. In this study, we highlight the combined effects of predation and high temperature simulating fire to understand its effects on the germination percentage and germination speed of the fire prone species Copaifera oblongifolia. Groups of seeds attacked by the beetles Rhinochenus brevicollis and Apion sp., seeds manipulated by the ant Atta laevigata, and seeds left intact were put to germinate in controlled environments. To evaluate the effects of abiotic filters, seeds with intact elaiosomes and seeds with elaiosomes removed by the ant Atta laevigata were exposed to temperatures of 27, 60, 100, and 200 °C. The results showed that only 2.8% of the seeds attacked by R. brevicollis germinated. Seeds attacked by Apion sp. germinated faster, followed by seeds with their elaiosomes removed and seeds with intact elaiosomes. Seeds attacked by Apion sp. had the lowest germination percentage. The temperature of 200 °C killed seed embryos, whereas seeds exposed to 100 °C took longer to germinate than seeds exposed to other temperatures. Our results reveal that fire intensity and seed damage are important drivers of seed germination of C. oblongifolia.

<p>This study was conducted to determine seed germination on the mechanisms of salinity stress in <em>B. rapa </em>var. <em>parachinensis </em>(Hong kong choy sum). The type of experiment was a completely randomized design with three salinity treatment NaCl, MgCl2, and KCl and minimum four replications was used. Salinity treatment consisted of 0 (control), 50, 100, 150, 200, mM concentrations. The experiment was carried out under 70% relative humidity at 23°C with a photoperiod of 8:16 h light/dark. The germinated seeds were counted every day and germination percentage, seed vigor, seed tolerance, length of seedling and biomass seedling was measured. The data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA multiple comparison test followed by Duncan’s multiple range test.</p>

An experiment was conducted during 2014-2015 to standardize the seed testing method in Kabuli chickpea MNK-1 by number of seeds and number of germination papers. Among the different testing methods 25 seeds per replication recorded highest seed germination percentage (91.58%), less number of fresh un-germinated seeds (1.91%), abnormal seedlings (4.00%), diseased seeds (2.33%) and significantly higher seedling vigour index-I and II (2215 and 6863), among the number of germination papers used 2+1 as in between paper method(Bottom 2 and one paper above) recorded significantly higher germination percentage (92.12%), less number of fresh un-germinated seeds (1.41%), abnormal seedlings (3.66%), diseased seeds (2.33%) and significantly higher seedling vigour index-I and II (2463 and 6900), when compared to other. Irrespective of number of germination paper and seeds used however, interaction of 25 seeds per replication and 2+1 between paper method of seed germination testing showed significantly germination percentage (96.50%), less number of fresh un-germinated seeds (0.00%), abnormal seedlings (1.00%), diseased seeds (1.00%) and significantly higher seedling vigour index-I and II (2844 and 7792) followed by 50 seeds per replication.

This research sought to establish the response of the germination percentage (PG), synchrony index (E), mean germination time (MGT) and mean germination rate (MGR) of Annona squamosa L. seeds from Apulo (province of Cundinamarca) and Castilla (province of Tolima), Colombia, to treatments with 0, 50, 100, 200, 400, 600, or 800 mg L-1 of gibberellic acid (GA). All of the treatments with GA increased the PG at each point of time of seed incubation. The 600 mg L-1 GA treatment resulted in higher PGs (92.3% at 16 days for Apulo and 95% at 24 days for Castilla) and lower MGTs (8.75 and 5.38 days for Apulo and Castilla, respectively) than those found with the concentration of 0 mg L-1 GA (17.68 and 10.88 days for Apulo and Castilla, respectively). Also, treating the seeds with 600 mg L-1 GA generated higher MGRs (0.18 and 0.12 germinated seeds/day for Castilla and Apulo, respectively) than those obtained with 0 mg L-1 GA (Castilla = 0.09 and Apulo = 0.06 germinated seeds/ day). Likewise, the germination was synchronized with the application of any concentration of GA. The results evidenced a positive response to the GA application, which provided a tool for the characterization of the phenomenon of dormancy in the A. squamosa seeds.

This study was carried out in February 2019 at the laboratory; Department of Biology, College of Taymaa, Tabuk University. The numbers of germinated seeds were recorded daily after Soaking for two days during 10th, 15th, 20th, 25th and 30th days and final percentage calculated at the end of germination period. Germination percentage, radical length and vigor index values were calculated for the two studied species. The two species (S) under study, days of germination (D) and interaction between them showed highly significant (P < 0.01) for seed germination. Despite germination percentages being slightly higher at the 10th day and 15th day for M. oleifera than M. peregrina, the germination percentages recorded higher values at the 20th, 25th and 30th days for M. peregrina than M. oleifera. The highest seed germinated number recorded at 20th day and 15th day for M. peregrina and M. oleifera, respectively with significant differences between the numbers of germinated seed in two species. Generally, germination %, radical length and vigor index of M. peregrina recorded a higher value compared to M. oleifera. A total value of germination percentage (80.33% and 65.33%) was recorded for M. peregrina and M. oleifera seed after 20 days from germinating time, respectively.

Open-pollinated highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L.) seeds were treated with 0, 2.6, 5.2, 10.4, or 20.8 mM gibberellic acid, 0, 0.4, 2.2, or 4.4 mM 6N-benzyladenine, or the two growth regulators in combination. Seeds were treated for 24 h, then germinated under intermittent mist during summer with temperatures fluctuating between 21 and 40 °C. Germinated seeds were counted weekly from day 15 to day 30, using hypocotyl exposure to indicate germination. Treatment with gibberellic acid at 10.4 mM in combination with 6N-benzyladenine at 0.4 to 2.2 mM gave the highest germination percentage. The relationship between gibberellic acid concentration and seed germination was cubic. Seedlings from the germinated seed flowered and fruited the following spring, making it possible for highbush blueberry to complete a generation in 1 year.

In the production of atemoya rootstocks (Annona cherimola Mill. x Annona squamosa L.), the seed propagation is hindered by dormancy resulting in low germination, similar to temperature that affects the percentage, speed, and uniformity of germination. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of constant and alternating temperature on the seed germination of three atemoya genotypes: ‘Gefner’, ‘Thompson’ and ‘PR-1’ at 25°C and 20-30°C (8-16h) using germination paper in absence of light, with four samples of 25 seeds per treatment. The evaluations occurred each seven days up to 35 days, which were assessed: germinated seeds, seedlings, dormant seeds and germination speed index. The experimental design was completely randomized in a factorial arrangement of 3x2, using four replications. The water content, fresh and dry matter of 100 seeds were analyzed in a completely randomized scheme with four replications. The alternating temperature 20-30°C provided favorable condition and higher germination percentage for atemoya seeds, achieving 0.638 for germination speed index and 37% for percentage of germination at 35 days. ‘Gefner’ and ‘Thompson’ cultivars presented higher percentage of germination than ‘PR-1’.

Germination and seedling development are critical stages in the life cycle of plants. Insufficient seedling emergence and inadequate establishment of woody plants are significant constraints in producing crops such as tamarillo. The application of pregerminative protocols improves the germination percentage, reduces the seedling emergence time, and improves several species in vitro. The present study was conducted to contrast three pregerminative treatments on Solanum betaceum seeds. When evaluating the pregerminative treatments, treatment T3 (imbibition for 24 hours) obtained the best results, showing an average of 21.62 days to germination, 73% germinated seeds, and 2.31 leaves per explant.

The effects of different temperatures (20 °C, 25 °C, 30 °C, 35 °C and photoperiod 26 °C/21 °C), types of soil (sand and loam) and soil herbicides (oxyfluorfen, terbuthylazine and mesotrione) on seed germination percentage, germination rate, as well as seedling length and weight of common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca L.) were examined. Over a period of ten days, germinated seeds were counted daily, and seedling length and weight were measured on the final day and germination rate calculated. The results indicated that temperature was the factor that significantly affected the percentage of germinated seeds of common milkweed, seedling length and germination rate, while it had less influence on seedling weight. The results showed that the alternating day/night temperature of 26 °C/21 °C also had a significant impact as the percentage of germinated seeds was the highest at that temperature on both soil types (sand: 71.3%; loam: 61.3%). Data regarding the herbicides tested (oxyfluorfen, terbuthylazine and mesotrione) showed decreasing germination percentage and seedling length with increasing herbicide concentrations on both soil types. Their effect was weakest on seedling weight. Tested herbicides are usable in control of common milkweed at the stages of germination and early establishment.

“Jacaranda” (Jacaranda mimosifolia) and "mezquite” (Prosopis laevigata) are timber species that generally present problems with regard to the germination of their seeds in natural conditions, since they have a very hard and impermeable cover. Different treatments have been applied to improve the germinative response of both species with unfavorable results. This study aimed to know the effect of the pre-sowing laser biostimulation on germination and seedlings growth of these species. The seeds were biostimulated with a He-Ne laser (632 nm, 10 mW). Considering three replications of 50 seeds for each species, five irradiation treatments were applied (30 s, 60 s, 90 s, 120 s, 150 s) and control. The results for mezquite demonstrated that the highest number of germinated seeds (96%) was obtained with the treatments 90 s and 150 s; in contrast, the control seeds showed a lower germination percentage (16%). Additionally, the 30 s treatment produced a positive effect on the growth of the root, and it was different (p < 0.05) to the remaining treatments and the control. For Jacaranda, there were significant statistical differences (p < 0.05) between the control and the different treatments. 29% of seed germination occurs without any treatment. However, for 90 s and 120 s, germination is induced in a relatively high percent (97%-99%). For both species, the best treatment was 120 s, since higher values were recorded for all the morphological variables. It is concluded that laser biostimulation can produce beneficial effects on the germination of seeds and seedling growth and it could contribute to the propagation and conservation of these species.

In general, seed germination is improved by low-pressure plasma (LPP) treatment using precursors such as air, nitrogen, argon, or water (H2O). Here, H2O-based LPP treatment using the optimized parameters of 10 W and 10 s improves the germination of Bambara groundnut seeds by 22%. LPP increases the wettability and roughness of the seed hilum while oxidizing the surface with carboxyl and amine groups. In this H2O-based treatment of Bambara groundnut seeds, combinatory etching and chemical modification facilitated the imbibition process and increased the germination percentage. The success of this method has the potential to be scaled up to solve food security with seeds otherwise facing germination-related issues.
