Recognizing the change in regulation of energy consumption may help China to control total energy consumption and realize sustainable development during rapid urbanization and industrialization. This paper re-examined the trans-provincial convergence of per capita energy consumption from 1990–2015 using five different kinds of methods for 30 Chinese provinces. Results show that per capita energy consumption across Chinese provinces was convergent. However, the results obtained by different methods were slightly different. First, it shows a weak beta-unconditional convergence during the entire period, as well as a significant beta-unconditional and conditional piecewise convergence from 1990–2000 and 2001–2015. Second, it shows a significant sigma-convergence indicated by a marked decrease in the standard deviation of logarithm (SDlog) and the coefficient of variation (CV). Third, the kernel density curve became narrower during 1990–2015, indicating that the per capita energy consumption of each Chinese province converged to a common equilibrium level, which was about 80% of the national average. Fourth, the intra-distributional mobility index implied a weak gamma-convergence. Fifth, the first difference of DF (Dickey-Fuller), ADF (Augmented Dickey-Fuller), and PP (Phillips-Perron) unit-root tests all suggested a stochastic convergence. On the whole, the results from this paper contribute to a more in-depth understanding of the status quo of per capita energy consumption in China, as well as a meaningful implication for differentiated energy policies and sustainable development strategies.

With a young and growing population, low per capita electricity consumption, rapid urbanization and strong economic growth, Turkey for nearly two decades has been one of the fastest growing power markets in the world. Domestic energy consumption accounts for 37% of total energy consumption. For this reason, the renewable sources are very important for Turkey's energy sector. Projections by Turkey's Electricity Generating and Transmission Corporation (TEAS), a public company which owns and operates 15 thermal and 30 hydroelectric plants generating 91% of Turkey's electricity, indicate that rapid (as high as 10% annual) growth in electricity consumption will continue over the next 15 years. Turkey has a total gross hydropower potential of 433 GW, but only 125 GW of the total hydroelectric potential of Turkey can be economically used.

The primary aim of this study was to assess and compare EU countries in terms of the use of renewable energy sources in road transport. The following research tasks were undertaken to realize this aim: (1) a review of the literature concerning the negative externalities in road transport, the concept of sustainable development, and legal regulations referring to the utilization of renewable energy sources; (2) presentation of changes in energy consumption (both traditional and renewable) in road transport in EU countries in the years 2008–2019; and (3) identification of leaders among the EU countries in terms of consumption of renewable energy sources in road transport. The aim and tasks were realized using the literature review and TOPSIS method as well as descriptive, tabular, and graphic methods. The analysis was conducted for 28 EU countries according to the status for 2019. The period of 2008–2019 was investigated. Sources of materials included literature on the subject and Eurostat data. Although renewable energy sources accounted for as little as 6% of total energy consumption in road transport in EU countries in 2019, this is a significant topical issue. It results from the direction in which changes need to be implemented in terms of energy generation in this area of human activity. It turned out that blended biodiesel and blended biogasoline were the most commonly used fuels originating from renewable sources. The application of the TOPSIS method resulted in the identification of five groups of EU member countries, which differed in terms of the degree of utilization of renewable energy sources in road transport. Luxemburg, Sweden, and Austria were leaders in this respect. In turn, Malta, Estonia, and Croatia were characterized by very low consumption of renewable energy. The greatest progress in the utilization of renewable energy sources in road transport was recorded in Sweden, Finland, and Bulgaria (changes in the relative closeness to the ideal solution from 0.15 to 0.27), while the greatest reduction in relation to other countries was observed in Austria, Germany, and Lithuania (changes from −0.35 to −0.22).

Despite the many benefits that energy consumption brings to the economy, consuming energy also leads nations to expend more resources on environmental pollution. Therefore, energy efficiency has been proposed as a solution to improve national economic competitiveness and sustainability. However, the growth in energy demand is accelerating while policy efforts to boost energy efficiency are slowing. To solve this problem, the efficiency gains in countries where energy consumption efficiency is of the greatest concern such as China, India, the United States, and Europe, especially, emerging economies, is central. Additionally, governments must take greater policy actions. Therefore, this paper studied 25 countries from Asia, the Americas, and Europe to develop a method combining the grey method (GM) and data envelopment analysis (DEA) slack-based measure model (SMB) to measure and forecast the energy efficiency, so that detailed energy efficiency evaluation can be made from the past to the future; moreover, this method can be extended to more countries around the world. The results of this study reveal that European countries have a higher energy efficiency than countries in Americas (except the United States) and Asian countries. Our findings also show that an excess of total energy consumption is the main reason causing the energy inefficiency in most countries. This study contributes to policymaking and strategy makers by sharing the understanding of the status of energy efficiency and providing insights for the future.

The article explores the impact of the quality and volume of energy consumption of the population on the human development index using a sample of a number of countries as an example. The hypothesis concerning the relationship between the amount of energy consumed, the human development index (HDI), and the environment (CO2 emissions into the atmosphere) has been verified. The study results show that the size and rating of the HDI are influenced by such factors as urbanization growth, gross domestic product (GDP), gross national income (GNI) per capita, the share of “clean” energy consumption by the population and business in total energy consumption, the level of socio-economic development, and R&D expenses. In the course of building the model, the recommendations by the United Nations (UN) and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) were used. The results show that the volume of energy consumption not only affects the human development index in a particular country, but is also an important factor in determining the level of sustainable development. The results, obtained in the course of the study and described in the article, may be applicable in the practice of research related to the assessment of human development and sustainable development.

A key concern when constructing sustainable development policy is reducing the negative impact on environmental systems and maximizing human welfare. In this study, we assess how energy consumption effected on Carbon intensity of human well-being (CIWB). Using two-way fixed effects in panel regression, this relationship has been investigated during 2000-2018 for 9 lower middle-income countries including Algeria, Bangladesh, Egypt, India, Morocco, Pakistan, Philippines, Uzbekistan and Vietnam, while adding GDP and FDI per capita as control variables. The study reveals that the use of energy for economic development is ineffective and inconsistent with the overview of sustainable development due to the result of increasing CIWB. However, the sign of negative coefficients of GDP and FDI per capita in control variables have given the striking findings that these factors will be helpful for lower middle - income countries to pursue sustainable development by reducing CIWB.

This study aims at evaluating the green growth in Vietnam in terms of energy consumption and CO2 emission level using the theory of the relationship between economy and environment. Data of Vietnam’s energy consumption and CO2 emission level in the period of 1985-2014 are obtained from the World Bank. Results show that the fossilized energy consumption to the total energy consumption ratio sharply increased from 29.57% in 1985 to 71.05% in 2011. The CO2 emission level also experienced a strong rise, from 0.3595 ton per capita in 1985 to 1.7281 ton per capita in 2010. On average, the CO2 emission per capita is 0.74 tons during this period. In addition, there is also a clear relationship between GDP per capita and CO2 emission level in the period with an explanation capacity of 95.2%. The study also offers some suggestions to the green growth policy in Vietnam for the next period.

Improvements of manufacturability and living standard driven by industrialization and urbanization typically cause a spike in total energy consumption (TEC) and related carbon emissions (TCEM). However, there have been few comparative studies to include industrial and residential energy consumption (IEC and REC, respectively) and related carbon emissions (ICEM and RCEM, respectively). Since China is a major emerging industrial country wherein urbanization is still ongoing, the present study was conducted in an attempt to analyze the temporal evolution of China’s continued energy consumption and related carbon emissions regarding both industrialization and urbanization. The influencing factors of TCEM, RCEM and ICEM are determined via the log-mean divisia index (LMDI) model. The results showed that both TEC and TCEM gradually increased (apart from a slight decrease in 2014); REC and RCEM increased steadily with no sharp peak; while IEC and ICEM declined sharply. TCEM was positively affected by economic output, consumption level, and population size; the influence of consumption level became more and more significant. Per capita GDP and per capita expenditure were the most significant driving factors for RCEM, while industrial added value (IAV) was the main driving factor for ICEM. The temporal evolution and influencing factors of energy consumption and carbon emissions had stage-related characteristics in accordance with Shanghai’s three stages of development. The Shanghai case study provided a comprehensive understanding of energy consumption and related carbon emissions from the dual perspective of industrialization and urbanization.

Significant energy resources are used for water supply in Jing-Jin-Ji region with the rapid urbanization and economy increase. Yet the interrelations between water and energy have not received adequate attention in the country. In order to fill this gap, this paper performs a regional-level quantitative assessment of electricity consumption on water produce (including water extraction, desalination and recycled water reuse), as well as analyzed carbon dioxide emission caused by energy used in 2015. The results show that total energy consumption for water supply amounts to 255.63 million kWh of electricity, and 0.27 million ton of carbon released in water supply progress. Due to the differences in water supply structure and water use amount, the energy consumption and carbon release of water supply in Hebei province is higher than Beijing and Tianjin city. Given increasing water supply demand, the implementation of the most stringent water management system may increase the energy consumption, and the trend of future climate change is not conducive to the conservation of water resources and energy in Jing-Jin-Ji region.

Indonesia’s rapid urbanization has become one of the indicators of development that also continues to increase. It is undeniable, improving stage of development is often have an impact on environmental degradation such as excessive fossil energy consumption and CO2 emissions. However, not all regions in Indonesia are at the same stage of development. There are high economic and socio-demographic inequalities and differences between western Indonesia (KBI) and eastern Indonesia (KTI). This study aims to provide empirical evidence and analyze impact of urbanization on energy consumption and CO2 emissions in the country that has different stage of developments across the region. Taking regional heterogeneity in Indonesia, panel data estimation method was applied at the provincial level during the 2011-2015 period. The results of the study show that urbanization in KBI and KTI has different effects on per capita fossil energy consumption. Urbanization in KBI has a positive relationship to per capita energy consumption, whereas urbanization in the KTI has a negative correlation. Urbanization in KBI has a negative correlation with CO2 emissions. However, there was no difference effect of urbanization on CO2 emissions in both of region because the estimation results in KTI showed values that were not statistically significant. These findings not only help advance the existing literature, but also add insight to policy makers in the urban and regional planning.

Clean energy can not only alleviate environmental problems but also contribute to rapid and sustainable development. The gray system is based on the sequence operator to process the original data and mine the law of change. GM(1,1) is a specific method of mining data, by building a GM(1,1) model to accumulate and generate data, the randomness of the data can be weakened and its regularity can be revealed. Here we use the GM(1,1) model to dynamically predict the future consumption rate of clean energy. This research not only provides data support for China’s green development, but also provides suggestions for improvement based on actual conditions.
