The educational system across the world has immensely been affected due to outbreak of COVID-19; it forced the shut down of educational institutions, which adversely affected student fraternity across the globe. Due to its contagious nature, COVID-19 demanded containment and enforced isolation that tremendously affected personal interaction of teachers and students. In the absence of traditional classroom teaching and one-to-one interaction, computer-based learning has emerged as closest substitute for off-line teaching. Against such a backdrop, it is pertinent to examine the students’ perception and readiness about online-learning system adopted at the university level during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. For the present study, the quantitative approach has been adopted and responses from 184 university students of National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi, India namely Delhi University, Jamia Millia Islamia (Central University) and Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University are collected through online questionnaire. This research study was conducted during June–August 2020. The findings of the study reveal students’ positive perception towards e-learning and thus acceptance of this new learning system. It has also empirically demonstrated the significance of e-learning in the time of COVID-19 crisis. In fact, e-learning has emerged as a new way of enhancing the learning process where social media may further improve the learning output. The findings of the study will facilitate educational institutions and policy makers to take this online-learning process to the next level in a better way.

In an effort to suppress the spread of the Covid-19 virus, Kemdikbud took a policy to close schools during the Covid-19 pandemic. All schools that initially did conventional learning by face-to-face, now learning is done from home through distance learning or online system, no exception pondok pesantren. The purpose of this research is to find out the distance learning process conducted by Pondok Pesantren Darunnajah 2 Cipining, Bogor. This research was conducted using descriptive qualitative approach. Based on research can be known that in learning, pesantren use various platforms such as google classroom, google meet, whatsapp, and smart system. In this online learning, the materials and tasks given are quite diverse, although there are no tasks in the form of discussions so that the interaction between students and students and teachers cannot be done. All parties, both students, teachers, and parents experienced a culture shock with the existence of this distance learning system / online. Distance learning /online also gives rise to physical distancing. Religious activities that are usually carried out in pesantren are now carried out at home and all must be reported to the teacher or room guardian via whatsapp. The challenges faced in online learning include a lack of interaction between teachers and students, a network that arises to sink, quotas that are rapidly depleted and expensive, and a lack of active participation of students. Therefore, the readiness of both teachers and students, as well as motivation from parents can also support the implementation of this distance learning process. In addition, the provision of quotas is also important to support the online learning process carried out by pesantren.

COVID19 pandemic has compelled educational institutions to re-navigate their learning modalities to that of fully online learning, thus, generating a totally new experience for teachers and learners who are novices in the flexible or blended learning. This study, therefore, attempted to explore the students’ experiences of online learning in time of COVID19 via in-depth quantitative method. A total of 171 students from secondary, tertiary, to graduate levels engaged in online learning were selected as participants using purposive sampling technique. The researchers-made questionnaire focusing on students’ satisfaction and dissatisfaction with online learning, as well as their desired improvement, was distributed online to these students from which responses were collected. Based on the results, the most common environment and methods for participating classes were student homes and mobile phones (touchscreen/android). Students indicated that they are satisfied with the following features of online classes: selecting a quiet place for online learning, quality classes at home, and being with the family at home while doing online learning. In contrast, students are dissatisfied about the internet connectivity, not getting full attention from teachers, and have difficulty in sharing ideas. Areas that need improvement according to the students were closely related to the causes of complaints, such as improving network connectivity, microphone and sound quality, and smooth communication during online classes. These findings imply that students’ educational environments are important and the quality of interactions can vary depending on the teachers and technology used. This study recommends that an improved and effective online learning system, maintaining academic achievement similar to traditional classroom teaching can be designed in preparation for any possible future crisis like COVID19.

The online learning system is still having problems. As a result of the observations of the USU team, several obstacles were felt not only by the teachers at MIN 2 Serdang Bedagai but also by students and parents. The problems that occur are quite diverse. Starting from limited signal, limited devices suitable for online learning, to the lack of technological knowledge of teachers and students on online applications that support the teaching and learning process. There are various online applications available today, such as Google Classroom, Zoom, Google Meet, Youtube, and others. These various online applications play an important role in helping students and teachers in the distance learning process. The USU team conducted training using the online application Google Classroom and Zoom. Google Classroom and Zoom were chosen because they are easier for the teacher to implement, besides that the two online applications facilitate coordination and communication between teachers and students, so that the material being taught can be discussed more easily, more freely and can be updated more quickly. In this community service, Online Learning training was conducted for the Elementary School / Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Level with Various Online Applications at MIN 2 Serdang Bedagai. This community service has reached the implementation stage of training which begins with the initial survey stage, provision of training modules and also training.
