Pressurized pipeline system damage is primarily caused by the highly destructive water hammer force. Currently, research on water hammer-caused collapse is mostly based on single-point collapse cases, but water hammer research, which involves multipoint collapse, is insufficient. Here, we establish an experimental platform to realize water hammers with multipoint collapse. With different schemes, i.e., various initial flow rates and valve closing speeds, we observed the hydraulic transient process with a high-speed camera, analyzed its characteristics and explained experimental phenomena with theoretical knowledge. Using experimental data analysis, we summarized the influencing factors and laws of the cavity length and water hammer pressure. Flow and pressure data for the different schemes were recorded to provide basic simulation data. Water column separation experimental phenomena were observed: completely atomized, completely cavitated and partially cavitated, and both cavitated and atomized. At the pump outlet, three hydraulic transition states occurred simultaneously in the horizontal pipe section: completely atomized, completely cavitated, and both cavitated and atomized. Two hydraulic transition states occurred in the knee region: completely and partially cavitated, and without atomization. The experimental results reveal that the initial flow rate and valve closing speed greatly affect the water hammer pressure rise and cavity length. The higher the initial flow rate and valve closing speed are, the larger the water hammer pressure rise and cavity length are.

Pompa hidram bekerja dengan memanfaatkan proses palu air. Terjadinya palu air akan mengakibatkan sebagian air menuju ke tabung udara dan sebagian lagi akan mengalami aliran balik pada pipa penggerak. Diameter piringan katup limbah mempengaruhi laju aliran dan gaya tekan di dalam badan pompa, sehingga akan mempengaruhi besarnya tekanan balik yang terjadi. Oleh sebab itu perlu dilakukan penelitian lebih lanjut mengenai pengaruh diameter piringan katup limbah terhadap tekanan aliran balik dalam pipa penggerak pompa hidram. Penelitian menggunakan variasi diameter piringan katup limbah 35 mm, 40 mm, 45 mm, 50 mm, dan 53 mm. Penelitian dilakukan dengan menggunakan kamera berkecepatan tinggi yaitu 960 fps, untuk merekam aliran balik yang sudah disemprotkan gliter sebelumnya. Sehingga didapatkan jarak pergerakan gliter untuk mendapat kecepatan dan pada akhirnya mendapat tekanan. Hasil dari penelitian menunjukkan diameter piringan katup limbah berpengaruh terhadap tekanan balik yang terjadi. Dimana head tekanan tertinggi terjadi pada diameter piringan katup limbah 40 mm sebesar 42.76 N/m2. Diikuti dengan debit pemompaan terbesar pada diameter piringan 42.88 mm sebesar 2.3 liter/menit. Selain tekanan, semakin besar diameter piringan katup limbah akan meningkatkan frekuensi dan efisiensi pompa hidram. Namun debit pembuangan menurun seiring bertambahnya diameter piringan. Hydram pump works by utilizing the water hammer process. Water hammer that take place some water flow into the air tube and some other will back into the drive pipe. The waste valve disk diameter affects the flow rate and the pressure force inside the pump body, so that it will affect the back pressure. Therefore it is necessary to conduct further research on the effect of the waste valve disk diameter to backflow pressure in the hydram pump drive pipe. The work used variations in diameter of 35 mm, 40 mm, 45 mm, 50 mm, and 53 mm. The flow pattern was recorded using a high-speed camera with 960 fps. The water was mixing with glitters. The glitter movement distance is obtained to get the speed and then its pressure. The results that show the diameter of the waste valve influences the back pressure. Finally the highest pressure is on the disk diameter 40 mm at 42.76 N/m2. Furthermore, the largest pumping debit was on a 42.88 mm disk diameter at 2.3 liters/minute. In addition, the larger valve disk diameter cause the higher frequency and efficiency. However, the waste debit decreases with increasing disk diameter.

The phenomenon of condensation-induced waterhammer in an ammonia refrigeration system was investigated experimentally. Waterhammer was generated by introducing warm ammonia gas over static subcooled ammonia liquid placed in a horizontal 146.3 mm diameter carbon steel pipe approximately 6.0 m long. By means of fast response piezoelectric pressure transducers and a high speed data acquisition system rapid dynamic pressures were recorded whenever a condensation-induced event occurred. Employing top-mounted diaphragm pressure transducers to sense gas pressure the speed of liquid slugs propagating along the pipe was determined. The occurrence of condensation-induced waterhammer depended upon three major variables; namely, (1) initial liquid depth, (2) liquid temperature, and (3) mass flow rate of warm gas. For given liquid depth and temperature, once the warm gas threshold conditions were exceeded, shocks occurred with greater magnitude as the mass flow rate of warm gas input was increased. With adequate subcooling condensation-induced waterhammer occurred for initial liquid depths ranging from 25% to 95% of internal pipe diameter. The threshold mass flow rate of warm gas necessary to initiate waterhammer was greater as the initial liquid depth was lowered. For numerous tests with sufficient gas mass flow rate a condensation-induced shock occurred at the end cap of the test pipe, generating an acoustic (pressure) wave that propagated at a modified speed of sound toward the gas-liquid interface at the back of the slug. Peak shock pressures could be correlated with the gas mass flow rate for various initial liquid depth and suction pressures and temperatures. As the initial liquid temperature and pressure were increased the hydraulic shocks became lower because of smaller subcooling.

It is well known that the water hammer phenomenon can lead to pipeline system failures. For this reason, there is an increased need for simulation of hydraulic transients. High-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes are commonly used in various pressurised pipeline systems. Most studies have only focused on water hammer events in a single pipe. However, typical fluid distribution networks are composed of serially connected pipes with various inner diameters. The present paper aims to investigate the influence of sudden cross-section changes in an HDPE pipeline system on pressure oscillations during the water hammer phenomenon. Numerical and experimental studies have been conducted. In order to include the viscoelastic behaviour of the HDPE pipe wall, the generalised Kelvin–Voigt model was introduced into the continuity equation. Transient equations were numerically solved using the explicit MacCormack method. A numerical model that involves assigning two values of flow velocity to the connection node was used. The aim of the conducted experiments was to record pressure changes downstream of the pipeline system during valve-induced water hammer. In order to validate the numerical model, the simulation results were compared with experimental data. A satisfactory compliance between the results of the numerical calculations and laboratory data was obtained.

The present numerical work studies the flow field in subsonic axial compressor stator passages for: (a) preceding rotor sweep (b) preceding rotor re-staggering (three stagger angle changes: 0°, +3° and +5°); and (c) stator sweeping (two 20° forward sweep schemes). The following are the motives for the study: at the off-design conditions, compressor rotors are re-staggered to alleviate the stage mismatching by adjusting the rows to the operating flow incidence. Fundamental to this is the understanding of the effects of rotor re-staggering on the downstream component. Secondly, sweeping the rotor stages alters the axial distance between the successive rotor-stator stages and necessitates that the stator vanes must also be swept. To the best of the author’s knowledge, stator sweeping to suit such scenarios has not been reported. The computational model for the study utilizes well resolved hexahedral grids. A commercial CFD package ANSYS® CFX 11.0 was used with standard k-ω turbulence model for the simulations. CFD results were well validated with experiments. The following observations were made: (1) When the rotor passage is closed by re-staggering, with the same mass flow rate and the same stator passage area, stators were subjected to negative incidences. (2) Effect of stator sweeping on the upstream rotor flow field is insignificant. Comparison of total pressure rise carried by the downstream stators suggests that an appropriate redesign of stator is essential to match with the swept rotors. (3) While sweeping the stator is not recommended, axial sweeping is preferable over true sweeping when it is necessary.

The thermal deformation of high-speed motorized spindle will affect its reliability, so fully considering its thermal characteristics is the premise of optimal design. In order to study the thermal characteristics of high-speed motorized spindles, a coupled model of thermal-flow-structure was established. Through experiment and simulation, the thermal characteristics of spiral cooling motorized spindle are studied, and the U-shaped cooled motorized spindle is designed and optimized. The simulation results show that when the diameter of the cooling channel is 7 mm, the temperature of the spiral cooling system is lower than that of the U-shaped cooling system, but the radial thermal deformation is greater than that of the U-shaped cooling system. As the increase of the channel diameter of U-shaped cooling system, the temperature and radial thermal deformation decrease. When the diameter is 10 mm, the temperature and radial thermal deformation are lower than the spiral cooling system. And as the flow rate increases, the temperature and radial thermal deformation gradually decrease, which provides a basis for a reasonable choice of water flow rate. The maximum error between experiment and simulation is 2°C, and the error is small, which verifies the accuracy and lays the foundation for future research.

Surge is measured in a low-speed radial compressor with a vaned diffuser. For this system, the flow coefficient at surge is determined. This coefficient is a measure for the inducer inlet flow angle and is found to increase with increasing rotational speed. Moreover, the frequency and amplitude of the pressure oscillations during fully-developed surge are compared with results obtained with the Greitzer lumped parameter model. The measured surge frequency increases when the compressor mass flow is throttled to a smaller flow rate. Simulations show that the Greitzer model describes this relation reasonably well except for low rotational speeds. The predicted amplitude of the pressure rise oscillations is approximately two times too small when deep surge is met in the simulations. For classic surge, the agreement is worse. The amplitude is found to depend strongly on the shape of the compressor and throttle characteristic, which are not accurately known.

This paper presents an experimental investigation on a modified airlift pump. Experiments were undertaken as a function of air-water flow rate for two submergence ratios (ε=0.58 and 0.74), and two different riser geometries (i) straight pipe with a constant inner diameter of 19 mm and (ii) enlarged pipe with a sudden expanded diameter of 19 to 32 mm. These transparent vertical pipes, of 1 m length, were submerged in a transparent rectangular tank (0.45×0.45×1.1 m3). The compressed air was injected into the vertical pipe to lift the water from the reservoir. The flow map regime is established for both configurations and compared with previous studies. The two phase air-water flow structure at the expansion region is experimentally characterized. Pipeline geometry is found to have a significant influence on the output water flow rate. Using high speed photography and electrical conductivity probes, new flow regimes, such as “slug to churn” and “annular to churn” flow, are observed and their influence on the output water flow rate and efficiency are discussed. These experimental results provide fundamental insights into the physics of modified airlift pump.

The pulsed detonation engine (PDE) is a unique propulsion system that uses the pressure rise associated with detonations to efficiently provide thrust. A study was conducted under the direction of the NASA Langley Research Center to identify the flight applications that provide the greatest potential benefits when incorporating a PDE propulsion system. The study was conducted in three phases. The first two phases progressively screened a large matrix of possible applications down to three applications for a more in-depth, advanced design analysis. The three applications best suited to the PDE were (1) a supersonic tactical aircraft, (2) a supersonic strike missile, and (3) a hypersonic single-stage-to-orbit (SSTO) vehicle. The supersonic tactical aircraft is the focus of this paper. The supersonic, tactical aircraft is envisioned as a Mach 3.5 high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft with possible strike capability. The high speed was selected based on the perceived high-speed fuel efficiency benefits of the PDE. Relative to a turbo-ramjet powered vehicle, the study identified an 11% to 21% takeoff gross weight (TOGW) benefit to the PDE on the baseline 700 n.mi. radius mission depending on the assumptions used for PDE performance and mission requirements. The TOGW benefits predicted were a result of the PDE lower cruise specific fuel consumption (SFC) and lower vehicle supersonic drag. The lower vehicle drag resulted from better aft vehicle shaping, which was a result of better distribution of the PDE cross-sectional area. The reduction in TOGW and fuel usage produced an estimated 4% reduction in life cycle cost for the PDE vehicle. The study also showed that the simplicity of the PDE enables concurrent engineering development of the vehicle and engine.

Distribution of the blade load is one of the design parameters for a cavitating inducer. For experimental investigation of the thermodynamic effect on the blade load, we conducted experiments in both cold water and liquid nitrogen. The thermodynamic effect on cavitation notably appears in this cryogenic fluid although it can be disregarded in cold water. In these experiments, the pressure rise along the blade tip was measured. In water, the pressure increased almost linearly from the leading edge to the trailing edge at higher cavitation number. After that, with a decrease of cavitation number, pressure rise occurred only near the trailing edge. On the other hand, in liquid nitrogen, the pressure distribution was similar to that in water at a higher cavitation number, even if the cavitation number as a cavitation parameter decreased. Because the cavitation growth is suppressed by the thermodynamic effect, the distribution of the blade load does not change even at lower cavitation number. By contrast, the pressure distribution in liquid nitrogen has the same tendency as that in water if the cavity length at the blade tip is taken as a cavitation indication. From these results, it was found that the shift of the blade load to the trailing edge depended on the increase of cavity length, and that the distribution of blade load was indicated only by the cavity length independent of the thermodynamic effect.

This paper presents an experimental study of three-phase flows (air-water-sand) inside a horizontal pipe. The results obtained aim to enhance the fundamental understanding of sand transportation due to saltation in the presence of a gas-liquid two-phase intermittent flow. Sand dune pitch, length, height, and front velocity were measured using high-speed video photography. Four flow compositions with differing gas ratios, including hydraulic conveying, were assessed for sand transportation, having the same mixture velocity. For the test conditions under analysis, it was found that the gas ratio did not affect the average dune front velocity. However, for intermittent flows, the sand bed was transported further downstream relative to hydraulic conveying. It was also observed that the slug body significantly influences sand particle mobility. The physical mechanism of sand transportation was found to be discontinuous with intermittent flows. The sand dune local velocity (within the slug body) was measured to be three times higher than the averaged dune velocities, due to turbulent enhancement within the slug body.
