Over the past three decades, marketing has increased its interest in studying the role of generic products in the pharmaceutical sector, one that has only recently incorporated the concept of “generic” products, compared to others such as the mass market. Since the emergence of generic products as one of national brands' main competitors, these have shown significant growth in both their market share, as well as in new product categories. Initially, the concept of generic products was limited to categories of packaged foods and later extended to categories such as medicine. Pharmaceutical market presents an opportunity to analyze the expansion of the “generic” concept, in a strongly regulated framework. In Europe, different policies have resulted in a varying development of generic market shares. Today, the sustainability of health system is a matter of increasing concern to European governments. Generic drugs offer an opportunity to contain pharmaceutical expenditures, since generic price are lower than their original brand equivalent. Developing this market is the main objective.

Export of medicines is one of the most profitable businesses, which attracts the attention of an increasing number of producers. The international medicines’ trade largely depends on national or regional regulatory mechanisms. In addition, the export terms and conditions differ for various categories of medicines. Innovative drugs account for the main share of the global medicines’ export. Therefore, export of innovative drugs developed in Russia to advanced countries is the most economically profitable direction. Export of generic drugs can bring considerable revenue to the producer and the state, but import substitution by releasing generic drugs weakens the innovative direction of studies and production. The import substitution policy targets manufacturers of medicines to produce generic drugs, as well as products intended, mainly or exclusively, for sale within the country. One of the ways to improve the efficiency of the entire pharmaceutical sector is international cooperation.

The pharmaceutical market in the Middle East is valued at more than $9.4b and is expected to grow over at a rate of 10% annually. Although there continues to be unrest in the region and around the world, both economically and politically, the Middle East has seen a shift and the pharmaceutical market is becoming more attractive. These countries are traditionally high importers of originator brands and branded generic drugs. Although originator drugs have previously held most of the market, new policies that favor generics are being implemented in the region. The pharmaceutical market ranges quite a bit within the various countries in the Middle East, Bahrain remains the smallest market with Saudi Arabia being the largest due to a growing population and new westernized lifestyle. Policy makers in the region should continue to encourage new players by continuing to propose new policies that allow for continued growth

The aim of the research was to study the correspondence of existing legislative and regulatory requirements of the pharmaceutical industry development, the analysis of the formation of the Ukrainian pharmaceutical market, the condition of drug assistance according to European requirements and recommendations of the WHO.

For the study archival materials, publications in scientific journals, and mass media were used, laws and provisions regulating pharmaceutical activity were studied and a survey among citizens was conducted. Systematic and logical methods, analytical and comparative analysis were applied, and own researches were performed.

For 22 years of Ukrainian statehood formation the following institutes were created: Pharmacological College, Pharmacopoeia Committee and State Service for Quality Control of Drugs which were transported to other institutes. Important laws were adopted: the Law of Ukraine «On Medicines», the Law of Ukraine «On small-scale privatization», the Law of Ukraine «On large-scale privatization» and others, which contributed to the formation and development of the pharmaceutical market.

In comparison with 1990 the amount of drugstore chains increased two and a half times and in 2013 in the country already worked 15 566 drugstores, including 3 025 in villages. According to publications, Ukraine lacks about 40 % of drug molecules needed for medical treatment, and 30 % of studied drugs are not proved. Purpose This paper aims to contribute to the understanding of what influences consumers’ choice of mandatory prescribed drugs, by looking with more detail to the substitution of branded drugs by generics. Specifically, this research looks at three factors that can influence this decision, namely, participative decision-making, perceived risk and price consciousness, within the recent changes introduced in the Portuguese pharmaceutical market by new legislation. Design/methodology/approach A cross-sectional study was conducted, using a self-administered questionnaire, to survey a sample of consumers/patients that visited a doctor and were prescribed some kind of drug. Data were treated using factor analysis for dimensionality reduction purposes and regression analysis to test the main hypothesis. Findings The results show that participative decision-making has no impact on purchase decision of generics, while perceived risk and price consciousness show a predictive power regarding purchase intention of generic drugs. Research limitations/implications Although the results are only applicable to the Portuguese context, it draws important conclusions regarding consumers’ behaviour when choosing between branded and generic drugs. Practical implications Knowing what influences consumers’ choices of generic drugs contributes to tune marketing strategies and actions. For public institutions, this paper offers insights on how to adapt public policies. Originality/value This paper is valuable because it is the first to look at the Portuguese pharmaceutical market from a consumer behaviour perspective since new legislation was set up.

The pharmaceutical market in Russia in the current environment is one of the most dynamically developing, which is associated with its high importance for ensuring national security. The change in the foreign policy environment against the background of the events of 2014 showed the negative aspects of the country's previously existing dependence on the import of pharmaceutical products, defining the implementation of the import substitution strategy in the field of drug supply as a long-term benchmark for the development of the industry. However, its implementation actually ran into a number of difficulties, the most important of which is the insufficient level of development of the country's scientific and technical potential in this industry. In the course of the study, the analysis of the main indicators of the dynamics and structure of the domestic pharmaceutical market in physical and value terms, identification of the main trends and their causes was carried out. It has been established that in the past 3 years the domestic pharmaceutical market has been developing, which is confirmed by a steady trend towards an increase in its value from 1.6 to 1.8 trillion. rub. At the same time, generic drugs predominate in the market structure in 2019, accounting for more than 85% of the total number of packs sold, the cost of which amounted to about 60% of the total sales. Consequently, on the Russian pharmaceutical market, there is a tendency towards active distribution of generic drugs of domestic origin, which is due to their price advantage compared to original imported drugs, which are expensive and have problems with implementation under conditions of economic sanctions.
