Pragmatics is branch of linguistics studies that attracts the writer to learn more about it. This study aims to identify the directive speech acts performed in “The Fault in Our Stars” movie script. Moreover, this study investigated how often the direct speech acts performed and which type of directive speech acts that are most frequently used in the movie script. The writer uses qualitative research method by collecting data from read the movie script, analyzing the dialogues of each characters, watch the movie and read the library research. A total of 40 directive speech acts were successfully identified. The result of analysis shows that the illocutionary acts with directive speech acts of suggest is the most frequently in the movie script (3, 50%). The least frequently used locutionary with the directive speech acts of order in the movie script (0, 0%). This study is expected to give some useful insights in understanding what directive speech acts is.  The writer hopes people can not only produce speech acts in their daily activities, but also understand why and how people react or response directive speech acts. Keywords: Directive speech acts, movie script, dialogues, qualitative.

Pangeuyeuks as the guide in Ngeuyeuk Seureuh ceremony has an important role to explain the marriage values through symbols to prospective bride and groom. This article describes speech acts used by pangeuyeuks in Ngeuyeuk Seureuh ceremony. Descriptive qualitative and distributional method was applied in doing the analysis of data. The speech acts were analyzed by the theory of illocutionary act to find the function of speech act, syntactic types of sentences to find the form of speech acts, and relationship between the function and form of speech acts to find the directness and indirectness of speech acts. The result shows that the illocutionary acts of pangeuyeuks classified into four types: assertives, directives, commissives and expressives, while the sytanctic types of sentences consist of declarative, interrogative, imperative and exclamatory. The direct speech acts are embodied in assertives, directives, commissives and expressives, wheareas the indirect speech acts are embodied in directive speech acts. The embodiment of the speech acts used by pangeuyeuks reflects special norms of interaction based on Sundanese local genius.

Penggunaan jenis dan fungsi dari tindak tutur digunakan dalam bisnis di perusahaan wedding Jepang yang ada di Bali yang dominan wisatawan Jepang ketika ingin melakukan pernikahan di Bali. Penelitian ini berfokus pada penggunaan jenis dan fungsi dari staf lokal ketika berkomunikasi dengan wisatawan Jepang yang dilakukan melalui pelayanan dari hari sebelum dan saat pernikahan berlangsung. Penelitian kualitatif ini dilakukan di kabupaten Badung karena perusahaan tersebut hanya dibuka di kabupanten Badung, dan tidak dibuka ditempat lain. Teknik pengumpulan data yaitu menyimak, mencatat interaksi staf lokal, serta didukung teknik wawancara mendalam. Data dalam bentuk percakapan yang digunakan oleh staf kepada wisatawan Jepang. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan penggunaan fungsi dari tindak tutur yang digunakan berbeda-beda sesuai dengan kondisi yang dialami staf lokal terhadap wisatawan Jepang. Yaitu (1) tindak tutur asertif dengan fungsi pragmatis menjelaskan dan bertanya; (2) tindak tutur direktif dengan fungsi pragmatis menyuruh, membantu dan memerintahkan. Namun meskipun, fungsi dari tindak tutur yang dihasilkan berbeda-beda, staf tetap memberikan pelayanan yang baik dan ramah saat berhadapan dengan wisatawan Jepang. Jenis dari ketiga pembahasan tersebut menggunakan jenis tindak tutur langsung dimana staf secara langsung berkomunikasi kepada wisatawan Jepang berupa kalimat tanya dan kalimat perintah.   Abstract The use of types and functions of speech acts are used in business in Japanese wedding companies in Bali that are predominantly Japanese tourists when they want to have a wedding in Bali. This research focuses on the use of types and functions of local staff when communicating with Japanese tourists which is done through services from the day before and when the wedding takes place. This qualitative research was conducted in Badung regency because the company was only opened in Badung regency, and was not opened elsewhere. Data collection techniques, such as listening, recording the interaction of local staff, and supported in-depth interview techniques. Data in the form of conversations used by staff to Japanese tourists. The results showed the use of the speech acts function used varies according to the conditions experienced by local staff towards Japanese tourists. Namely (1) assertive speech acts with pragmatic functions explaining and asking questions; (2) directive speech acts with pragmatic functions of ordering, helping and ordering. However, although the functions of speech acts are different, the staff still provide good and friendly service when dealing with Japanese tourists. The types of the three discussions use direct speech acts where the staff directly communicates with Japanese tourists in the form of question and command sentences.   This study aims to observe and describe the use of speech acts by Barack Obama when he announced the death of Osama bin Laden. The writer focuses on illocutionary acts used by Barack Obama. The primary data source is the transcript of Barack Obama’s speech at White House on May 1st, 2011 after the death of Osama bin Laden. The types of illocutionary acts are observed by the writer according to Searle’s Taxonomy of Illocutionary Act. They are representatives, directives, commissives, expressives, and declarations. The result of the study shows that representatives are frequetnly used by Obama in his speech. Representatives are used in 54 utterances (74%); Commissives are used in 11 utterances (15%); Expressives are used in 7 utterances (11%). Barack Obama used none both directive speech acts and declaration speech acts. Representatives are frequently used in Barack Obama speech because the purpose of the speech is to announce the death of Osama bin Laden in Pakistan. The evidence is that most utterances in the transcipt use statements, descriptions, and reports.

This research aims to find out the types of Directive Speech Acts by the characters in “Sleeping Beauty” movie script based on the theory that proposed by Searle theory and analyze the types of directive speech acts that most frequently used in the movie script and the possible reason for it. The subject of the research was the script of the conversation between the characters. The type of this research is Descriptive Quantitative research. In this research, the researcher used documentation as the instrument. The object of this study is the “Sleeping Beauty” movie script by Casper Van Dien. The results of the research show that, first, the types of directive speech acts were Command, request, permission, prohibition, and question. Second, the types of directive speech act that most frequently used were command type. In terms of types, the command is in the highest rank (51 utterances) and prohibition ( 2 utterances)) is in the lowest rank. In terms of reason, the command types (51 utterances) is the most frequently used, because it usually shows the strength of each character very clearly. And also the movie genre also influences the use of its directive speech acts itself.

The Purpose of this study is to describe the use of directive speech acts of prohibition in the Spirited Away movie which are based on the pattern of prohibitions in Japanese. It also aims to find out the factors that influence the prohibition of speech based on the context of the conversation and categorized them into direct or indirect speech. The data of this research were taken from the utterance of the characters containing the directive speech acts of prohibition. The use of prohibition directive speech acts is analyzed based on the prohibition pattern in Japanese in accordance with the theory of Namatame. This type of research uses the qualitative descriptive research method with a pragmatic approach. From the results of data analysis it was found that the use of illocutionary speech forms directly prohibits,which are: the patterns of  ~ V ru na, ~ te wa ikenai, ~ naide, ~ dame, and ~ janai. Ilocutionary forms are directly used by people who have strong authority over their partners. With his authority the speaker does not need to use indirect speech which usually emphasizes modesty.

The aim of this research are to explain the politeness of directive speech acts and politeness strategy, which supports the effectiveness of the talk show. This research is a descriptive qualitative research. The data resources are spoken data from three episodes of Satu Jam Lebih Dekat Talk Show on TV One. The technique of data sampling is determined by purposive sampling. The data validation technic in this research is triangulation technic. The result of the research shows that the types of directive speech acts in Satu Jam Lebih Dekat are to please, to request, to ask, to order, to invite, and to forbid. The politeness strategies of Satu Jam Lebih Dekat are bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off record. The politeness of directive speech acts supports the effectiveness of the talk show because of some factors, such as types of directive speech act and politeness strategy.

Communication within society comprises diverse linguistic choices influenced by social interaction. This study discusses how structures of utterances and types of directive illocutionary acts pertain to the characters’ qualities and non-linguistic factors in Amal Unbound (2018) by Aisha Saeed. This analysis aims to find out the connection between utterances the characters’ qualities such as age, occupation, education, relationship, social status, and non-linguistic factor like the topic or purpose. The underlying theory used in this study is Bach and Harnish’s directive speech act categorization. This study was conducted using qualitative method since it involves discussion on linguistic data (words, phrases, sentences, and utterances). The result of the analysis shows that the utterances of the novel’s characters are affected by the quality they possess and surrounding non-linguistic factors. In conclusion, understanding illocutionary acts open our eyes of the significance of appropriate uses of language in social practice.

Language politeness is politeness and subtlety in using language when communicating through oral and written. This research is qualitative research using the descriptive method. This research comes from the form of communication between millennials in the city of Namlea. They communicate using the Indonesian Ambonese dialect, while the type of data obtained in this study in oral speech contains politeness elements in the language. The data obtained through the recording are then analyzed using descriptive methods, namely a picture of the reality obtained from the data obtained. The analysis process is carried out through stages, identifying data and numbering data that contain language politeness. The results found that courtesy in language was; directive speech acts and expressive speech acts. There are four forms of speech acts by the millennial directive of Namlea, Buru, and six states of explicit speech act.

Theis research has a prominet goal, idenitfying types of speech acts uttered by an English teacher at a vocational high school. This work uses Searle’s theory to discover the dominant kinds of speech act employed by the teacher. The researchers also investigated the additional utterances in showing learning movement. The research methodology is descriptive-qualitative research, where the researcher found three kinds of speech act uttered by the teacher; directive, representative, and expressive. The researchers calculated the data finding and found 297 utterances which comprised of 246 directives utterances or 82,83% of overall data, 45 representative utterances or represented the 15.15% of data, and 6 expressive utterances which covered 2,02%. The most obtrusive was directive speech acts (82.83%) and the less frequent was expressive speech act (2.02%). The most obtrusive was directive speech acts because the teacher often used directives (questioning) to handle the students in the classroom and made sure that the students understand the aims of the English material.

AbstrakPenelitian terhadap novel Bidadari-Bidadari Surga karya Tere Liye ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan kesantunan tindak tutur menyuruh pada tokoh protagonis dalam novel Bidadari-Bidadari Surga karya Tere Liye. Jenis penelitian ini adalah penelitian kualitatif dengan menggunakan metode deskriptif. Sumber data dalam penelitian ini adalah novel Bidadari-Bidadari Surga karya Tere Liye. Data penelitian ini adalah tindak tutur direktif menyuruh pada tokoh protagonis dalam novel tersebut. Data dikumpulkan dengan cara membaca dan memahami novel, mencatat kata, frasa, klausa, dan kalimat tokoh yang dapat dirumuskan sebagai bagian dari tuturan maupun tindak tutur menyuruh, dan menginventarisasikan data berdasarkan masalah-masalah tindak tutur direktif yang terdapat dalam novel Bidadari-Bidadari Surga karya Tere Liye. Data dianalisis dan dibahas berdasarkan teori pragmatik. Dalam penelitian ini ditemukan sembilan tuturan tindak tutur direktif menyuruh, yang menunjukkan bahwa tokoh protagonis dalam novel Bidadari-Bidadari Surga karya Tere Liye cenderung melakukan tindak tutur menyuruh secara santun. Data were collected by understanding the novel, noting down words, phrases, clauses, or sentences that can be formulated as part of speech acts, and making an inventory of the data based on the problems of directive speech acts contained in Tere Liye's novel Bidadari-Bidadari Surga. Data were analyzed and based on pragmatic theory. The results of this study shows nine directive ordered speech act utterances, which indicate that the protagonist in the novel Bidadari-Bidadari Surga by Tere Liye tends to perform speech acts politely. The strategy of telling the main character in the novel tends to use commands to order his younger siblings. Keywords: directive speech act ordered, pragmatic, novel, Bidadari-Bidadari Surga
