The areas of the former Royal Pond (Staw Królewski) in Lublin were the subject of many projects and architectural competitions. Over the years the concepts of development of this area have been changing, but both in the pre-war period and later, it was supposed to be green urban space accessible to the residents. The aim of the article is to outline the development plans of the city of Lublin (second half of the 20th century / beginning of the 21st century) concerning the implementation of the Central Municipal Park, which was planned in the area of the former pond. The works on this project, which was finally never implemented, have been carried out since the end of the 1950s. This name, used interchangeably with Culture Park (Park Kultury), appeared for the first time in the General Spatial Development Plan for the city of Lublin in 1957. The author, on the basis of conducted research, archival queries and comparative studies, analyses the ideas and solutions concerning the development of this part of the Bystrzyca river valley.

Local spatial development plans, are one of the most important urban landscaping tools. Their goal is, on the one hand, to protect urban space including, inter alia, prevention of creation of illconsidered developments, that are bad to the urban landscape, the environment or the local communities. For this purpose, there is a number of restrictions introduced into local spatial development plans. On the other hand, the role of local plans is also creating the space, so they should be conducive to projects with high-quality architecture, that are often unconventional and innovative, adding new value to the architectural landscape of the city, which could be blocked by too strict regulations. The trick is to create regulations in a way that can help reconcile that two goals.

The aim of this article is to present the relationship between an industrial city and a small river within the last 200 years and the contemporary development and functions of rivers and valleys. The study was conducted in Łódź (currently nearly 699,000 inhabitants). In the 19th and in the early 20th century, the spatial development of the city also caused considerable transformations of rivers and their valleys. It was only at the turn of the 20th century, i.e. after the fall of the textile industry and a rise of the focus on ecological structures within a city, that the authorities decided to repair the utilisation of rivers and valleys.

The article attempts to uncover the transformation of the urban environment of Krasnoyarsk, starting from the moment of its foundation until the end of the 20th century, as well as the influence of certain spheres of life (culture, industry, transport infrastructure, administrative and territorial position, etc.) and the environment on its formation. The article notes that the analysis of domestic and foreign studies of urban space confirms the validity of an appeal to an interdisciplinary type of research. The object of the research is the city of Krasnoyarsk as an actively developing metropolis with a rich history and its own administrative and cultural characteristics. The subject of research is the urban space of Krasnoyarsk. Observation and analytical and descriptive methods, which include the analysis of individual elements of the development of urban space in the specified period, followed by a generalization of the data, as well as comparative historical and dialectical methods, are used to solve the problems of the study. In addition, the main research methods include the analysis of architectural objects constructed in various years. In conclusion, the general conclusions and trends that characterize the specifics of the urban space of Krasnoyarsk, formed by the end of the 20th century and largely predetermined its development in the third millennium, are indicated

The topicality of the work is determined by the need to expand the theoretical base of the Ukrainian urbanism and the formation of the own problems of cultural studies of urban space. The purpose of the article is to comprehend the aspect of corporeity in the concept of Michel de Certeau’s walk (based on the work “Walking the City”) as a cultural practice. The methodology. The research was carried out on the basis of the analysis of the source base and scientific literature with the help of comparative analysis, semiotic and hermeneutic methods, as well as with the involvement of phenomenological and biographical approaches. Generalization was carried out using the modeling method within the framework of the cultural approach. The results. The peculiarities of the concept of Michel de Certeau’s walk as a form of attracting the subject of culture to the urban space are revealed. The walk is investigated as a cultural practice of urban space assimilation, realization of active civil position and formation of individuality. It is shown that corporeity acts as a way of interacting the subject of culture with the space of the city. It is shown that the subject’s corporeity combines spatial and semiotic practices of assimilation of urban space. Actions to form a symbolic dimension of the culture of the city are shown as equivalent to the practices of spatial activities of the subject. It is noted that the cultural practice of Michel de Certeau’s walk becomes consonant to the mechanics of forming the image of the city of Kevin Lynch. It is emphasized that the combination of spatial and semiotic practices in the activity of the subject leads to the formation of the cultural space of the city. The cultural practice of walking in Michel de Certeau’s “Walking the City” is shown as a form of subject integration into the city space. The isolation of the aspect of corporeity made it possible to see the walk as a holistic form of the subject’s activity, which combines spatial actions with practical assimilation of the city together with practices of constructing the image of the city. The formation of the culture of the city, therefore, is determined by the intensity of the subject’s practices in it. The scientific novelty. In this study for the first time we have explored the concept of Michel de Certeau’s “Walking the City” as a cultural practice. Also for the first time the corporeity aspect of the walk as a form of assimilation of the city space by the subject of culture is studied. The practical significance. The results of the study can be used in teaching courses on city culture, urban studies, museumification of urban space, corporeity of culture, semiotics of culture. Also scientific achievements can be included into urban projects of modern public spaces of residential areas of Ukrainian cities with the involvement of civil activists and local residents.

One of the positive phenomena of mo­dern culture is its tendency to study and preserve urban space, which is especially important for historical cities. The appeal of researchers to the study of urban landscapes, made by artists of pre­vious eras and left for descendants to see the views of large and small ci­ties, contributes to the process of lost monuments reconstruction. The importance of studying images of cities through visual sources is determined by the fact that cities are territories connected with lives of people, who are involved in creation of their architectural monuments. Ci­ties are the habitat of people that reflects their daily life. The article, for the first time, explores the features of the Kazan urban art of the early 20th century reflected in graphic works of the Tatar satirical magazines “Yashen” (“Lightning”) and “Yalt-Yult” (“Sparkle”), published in the early 20th century. The drawings presented in “Yashen” and “Yalt-Yult” are illustrations to articles and feuilletons.Most of the drawings are made in the genre of cartoons, which is predetermined by the studied ma­gazines’ subject matter. Mainly, architectural objects depicted in the cartoons of “Yashen” and “Yalt-Yult” magazines do not have an independent meaning, they are only “present” in picture’s composition in order to show an event from the city’s life more clearly. Another group of the Tatar satirical magazines’ drawings represents the ima­ges of the architectural structures that illustrate texts of advertisements. In this group’s graphics, depiction of architectural monuments is characte­rized by careful elaboration of details due to the reconstruction of the architectural structure’s image through visual memory. Because of the fact that at the beginning of the 20th century, the main part of the Tatar population of Kazan lived on the territory of the Old and New Tatar Slobodas, the authors of articles, feuilletons and cartoons in the magazines mainly reflected the life of those parts of the city.The research is based on the study of fundamental works and publications of Russian scientists and the analysis of the body of sources: articles and dra­wings from the magazines “Yashen” and “Yalt-Yult”, archival materials.

The subject of the article is an analysis of the three aspects of depicting urban space of Eastern Ukraine, focusing specifi cally on the Donbass region and the city of Kharkov as depicted in the novels Voroshilovgrad (2010) and Mesopotamia (2014) by Serhiy Zhadan. The urban space of Eastern Ukraine overlaps with the most important values that shape a person’s personality and aff ect her or his self-identifi cation. The city space is also a “place of memory” and experiences of generations that infl uence current events. In addition to the historical and axiological dimension, the imaginative aspect of space is also important. This approach is used by the author to describe the urban space as a functioning imagination or stereotypes associated with it as opposed to its realistic depiction.

Considerando a dinâmica e a estrutura urbana de Belém no início do século XXI como expressão da acumulação das intervenções urbanas e das práticas de planejamento e gestão do espaço da cidade, analisa-se a genealogia do planejamento urbano para compreender a produção de um espaço que tem como característica a negação da natureza e a produção da desigualdade entre classes sociais. Nesse aspecto, identificou-se três períodos específicos que produziram impactos significativos na produção do espaço urbano de Belém: o terceiro quarto do século XVIII (1755 – 1777) com as reformas promovidas no período Pombalino na Amazônia, momento de expressão de uma modernidade urbana e arquitetônica; o final do século XIX e a primeira década do século XX (1890 – 1910), momento de ascensão da economia regional a partir da intensificação de atividades extrativas que produziram reformas urbanísticas com tons higienistas e; por fim, o período entre 1940 e 1970, que marcou uma série de propostas de planejamento com viés técnico-burocrático na produção do espaço. Do ponto de vista da metodologia adotada, estabeleceu-se como percurso de pesquisa: i) levantamento bibliográfico de caráter teórico e empírico da temática; ii) levantamento documental acerca das práticas de planejamento e intervenção dos períodos destacados com base em legislação, planos e projetos de cada um dos períodos; iii) coleta de iconografia representativa da época as quais as políticas foram executadas. Apresenta-se como resultados a hipótese de que a narrativa de uma pretensa ausência de planejamento como fator explicativo dos problemas da cidade é um discurso que não tem base na realidade, posto que historicamente é exatamente o oposto que a pesquisa indica, as modalidades de planejamento efetivadas em Belém acentuam problemas como a segregação socioespacial.Palavras-Chave: História, Planejamento Urbano, Modernidade, Belém.AbstractConsidering the dynamics and urban structure of Belém at the beginning of the 21st Century as an expression of the accumulation of urban interventions and planning and management practices of the city, the historical genealogy of urban planning is analyzed as a way of understanding production of a space that has as characteristic the negation of the nature and the production of the inequality between social classes. In this aspect, three specific periods were identified that produced significant impacts on the production of the urban space of Belém: the third quarter of the seventeenth century (1755 - 1777) with the reforms promoted in the Pombaline period in the Amazon, a time of expression of an urban and architectural design; the end of the nineteenth century and the first decade of the twentieth century (1890 - 1910), a time of great rise of the regional economy from the intensification of extractive activities that produced urban reforms with hygienic tones; and finally, the period between 1940 and 1970, which marked a series of planning proposals with a bureaucratic technical aproach in the production of space in Belém. This work established as following research methodology: i) survey bibliographical of theoretical and empirical character of the analyzed subject; ii) documentary survey of the planning and intervention practices of the highlighted periods based on municipal, state and federal legislation, as well as the master plans and development plans of the periods; iii) collection of iconography representative of the time to which the policies were executed in the urban space. The hypothesis is that the narrative of a supposed absence of planning as a factor of the city's problems is a discourse that has no basis in reality, since historically it is exactly the opposite that the research indicates, that is, the modalities in Belém accentuate problems such as socio-spatial segregation.Keywords: History, Urban Planning, Modernity, Belém.

Contemporary shopping malls in Egypt have created new public spaces for lifestyle and leisure, which complement the commercial logic of consumer behavior. Mega malls in Egypt are simultaneously merging shopping, leisure, and entertainment, creating an ambivalence. They are representations of the globalized economy, but also manifest a certain uniqueness through their typology, their mode of insertion in the urban fabric and the type of public spaces created in them. This paper traces four new typologies in the design of six mega shopping malls in Egypt, constructed since 2010, as they integrate new public gathering spaces for leisure, recreation, and entertainment. Data on the new malls in Egypt was collected from corporate websites and promotional brochures, Google Maps and Street View, TripAdvisor, social media websites, visitor comments and news articles. A key finding is the trend of integration of large outdoor recreational spaces such as courtyards and plazas in mall design, the inclusion of a water element for attraction as well as the transition in function from simply offering goods and services to one that offers experiences and events to encourage recurring visits to the mall. The transformation of the mall parallels changes in conceptualizing the city of the 20th century as a large marketplace, an emporium of consumption, to conceptualizing the city of the 21st century as a large theatre and a festive place.

Tal complejo organismo urbano, inédito hasta ese momento, fue objeto del más ambicioso plan urbano sobre una ciudad construida.Este artículo se destina al estudio de este originario plan urbano de 1916, el cual sentaría las bases, unas ciertamente visionarias otras excesivas, de la construcción de la Ciudad de Nueva York en todo el siglo XX. La Building Zone Resolution se creó con dos fines: resolver los problemas de congestión humana en un espacio reducido, la ciudad del presente, y proponer una visión del espacio urbano en las décadas venideras, la ciudad del futuro.El artículo es un compendio de diez textos cortos y un epílogo, que junto a sus respectivos diez documentos gráficos, construyen el corpus de la investigación. El lector pues se enfrenta a un ensayo gráfico formado por pequeños capítulos que le sumergirán en los orígenes de la primera ciudad vertical de la historia.PALABRAS CLAVE: Nueva York; Planeamiento; Visión urbana.The city of New York was a pioneer in the implementation of an urban control planning system that set in order a city that exceeds five million people in the early twentieth century. Such complex urban organism – invaluable until that moment – was the target for the most ambitious urban planning on a built city.This paper focuses on the study of this initial urban planning from 1916, which would set the basis, certainly some visionary yet others excessive, for the building of New York City throughout the 20th century. The Building Zone Resolution was created with two purposes: to solve the issues related to the human bundle in a limited space, the city of the present, and to aim a vision of the urban space in the forthcoming decades, the city of the future.The article is a compendium of ten short texts and one epilogue, which in combination with ten graphic documents, frame the corpus of this investigation. Karachi is a city of migrants and an important commercial hub, which provides Pakistan with a window on the world. But Karachi is also a deeply fragmented city, plagued by an acute urban crisis that takes roots in the failure of the development plans that successive Pakistani governments have delegated to foreign experts. The transnationalisation of the Afghan jihad, in the 1980s, also fuelled social and ethnic antagonisms in the city and contributed to the proliferation of violent entrepreneurs and ethnic parties. Both criminal elements and ethnic activists contributed to the ever-increasing fragmentation of urban space in the city, and to the multiplication of ethnic enclaves controlled by private militias. This extreme fragmentation of the city has benefited local jihadis and foreign terrorists who have taken shelter here since the fall of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan. However, Karachi will never be a “sanctuary” for jihadi militants, due to the hostility of local ethnic parties, whose activists see themselves as enlightened secularists at war with the most retrograde elements of their society and their foreign allies.
