The research about application of word Square cooperative learning model has been done to improve student’s achievement in colloid matter at 11th SMKN 2 Pekanbaru. The purpose of this research was to know if the application of Word Square cooperative learning model could increase student achievement in colloid matter. Subject of this research were students at XI Kimia 1 class and XI Kimia 2 class in academic year 2011/2012. XI Kimia 1 class was randomly selected as experiment class and XI Kimia 2 class as control class. Research results revealed that application cooperative learning Word Square model was capable to improve student’s achievement in colloid matter. This research pretest-posttest design by using t-test (t arithmetic> t table; 3.49 > 1.67). The application this model capable to increase students achievement in colloid matter about 13.71%.Keywords: cooperative learning, Word Square, colloid and learning achievement

This research aimed at (1) developing teaching materials based on local content for Civic Education in University; and (2) describing the potential impact of local content on student consciousness on local culture. It was a developmental research. The subject were student registered in Civic Education Course (Mata Kuliah PKn) at History Department. Pilot project was validated through one to one, small group, and field evaluation. The analyzed result indicates that the developed instrument was valid and has potential impact. Supported data shows that the mean score prior to implementation was 6.86 and after implementation was 7.73. In other words, there was an increasing student achievement before and after its implementation. Accordingly, we suggest that this developed material could be implemented widely.

Abstract.  This study investigated a natural acid-base indicator which is extracted from plants in Kupang city. There are 14 plants that potential as a source of natural indicator for acid base titration, i.e, Kol Ungu (Brassica oleracea Capitata Group), Turi Merah flower (Sesbania grandiflora L. Pers), Belimbing Wuluh flower (Averhoa bilimbi L), Kaktus Merah fruit (Opuntia vulgaris Mill), Ruelia flower (Ruellia simplex), Flamboyan flower (Delonix regia), bugenvil flower (Bougainvillea spectabilis Willd.), Bayam Merah leaves (Amaranthus tricolor L.) Jamblang fruit (Syzygium cumini L.), Murbey fruit (Morus alba L.), Pinang fruit (Areca catechu L.), Sirih fruit (Piper betle L.), Kunyit (Curcuma longa Linn), and Nanas Kerang leaves (Rhoeo discolor). Plants extract shows a sharp color change in acid and base solution. Promising results as a natural indicator also shown in acid base titration which is have similar equivalent point to synthetic indicator. We can use these natural indicators as an alternative to synthetic indicator because they are found to be simple, very useful, cheap, easy to extract, accurate, and eco-friendly. Keywords: Plant, Natural indicator, Acid-Base

The purpose of this project was to increase student achievement, engagement, and satisfaction using animated instructional videos in an online general psychology course at a community college. This project not only considered the data collected from student activity tracking, but also examined students' perception of how the videos engaged and helped them remember course material. Collection of data was conducted using a pre-intervention and post-intervention survey, a pre-test, a post-test (mid-term exam), and an online behavior evaluation rubric. A statistically significant increase in scores from pre-test to post-test occurred. Students reported that they preferred the animated instructional videos over the textbook and believed videos helped them remember the material. Overall, the project showed that students enjoyed the videos and many recommended that additional ones be created for the rest of the course. Although time-consuming, instructional videos were worth the effort to keep students engaged and learn course material.

There is significant interest in developing novel absorbents for hazardous material cleanup. Iron oxide-coated melamine formaldehyde sponge (MFS/IO) absorbents with various IO layer thicknesses were synthesized. Various other absorbents were also synthesized and compared to evaluate the absorption capability of the MFS/IO absorbents for strong acid (15%, v/v) and base (50%, m/m) solutions. Specifically, absorbent and solution drop tests, dust tests, and droplet fragment tests were performed. Among the various absorbents, MFS/IO absorbents possessing a needlelike surface morphology showed several unique characteristics not observed in other absorbents. The MFS/IO absorbents naturally absorbed a strong base solution (absorption time: 0.71–0.5 s, absorption capacity: 10,000–34,000%) without an additional external force and immediately absorbed a strong acid solution (0.31–0.43 s, 9830–10,810%) without absorption delay/overflow during absorbent and solution drop tests, respectively. The MFS/IO absorbents were also demonstrated to be ideal absorbents that generated fewer dust particles (semiclass 1 (ISO 3) level of 280 piece/L) than the level of a clean room (class 100). Furthermore, the MFS/IO absorbents were able to prevent the formation of droplet fragments and solution overflow during the solution drop test due to their unique surface morphology and extremely high absorption speed/capacity, respectively.

Each of 20 high school algebra teachers taught a lesson on direct variation to one first-year algebra class. The students (N=455) had not previously been taught this topic in class. Before the lessons were taught, each teacher was given a list of lesson objectives. Immediately after each lesson, a posttest that focused on the lesson objectives was administered. The teachers were not shown the posttest before they taught their lessons. Correlations were found between the mean posttest scores for the classes and several variables pertaining to teacher discourse.
