The main contours of the bearing surfaces of friction pairs with hydrodynamic lubrication are considered. Analysis of tabular data and graphs obtained by experimental methods made it possible to establish additional parameters of influence on the hydrodynamic characteristics of the friction process and the operational characteristics of tribological systems, in a wide range of load-speed modes. Engine journal bearings are now routinely analysed using elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) methods [1,2]. This analysis technique takes into account interaction of the hydrodynamic film with the elastic distortion produced in both the bearing and the journal. It has proved a robust analytic tool for designers in predicting the value and location of such parameters as minimum oil film thickness and maximum film pressure. However, for some very heavily loaded cases, the normal EHL analysis technique may fail to produce realistic solutions. Due to ‘cusping’ of the bearing surface under extreme pressures the edges of bearing may be predicted to penetrate the journal surface leading to a ‘negative’ film thickness. In reality, the surfaces will interact and a ‘running-in’ process will result in subtle changes to the bearing surface profile such that a hydrodynamic film can be maintained across the whole bearing surface. This study introduces a contact-wear model which attempts to model this situation.

AbstractIntra-plant transport systems within their operation directly impact on the performance of production systems. For their effective operation, it is, therefore, necessary to realize evaluation of operational performance and effectivity. For the realization of this type of evaluation, in addition to a wide range of sensors that can be difficult for installation and operation, we can also use indirect methods that are equally able to provide reliable operational characteristics. Indirect analytical methods are presented above all by the approach which is based on the use of simulation methods. The method of computer simulation provides a wide range of options for the evaluation of efficiency and performance. The paper describes the use of a simulation model created in the program Tecnomatix Plant Simulation for analyzing the supply of production workplaces within the MilkRun system.

Abstract. In this work we develop a reduced-complexity model (RCM) for river delta formation (referred to as DeltaRCM in the following). It is a rule-based cellular morphodynamic model, in contrast to reductionist models based on detailed computational fluid dynamics. The basic framework of this model (DeltaRCM) consists of stochastic parcel-based cellular routing schemes for water and sediment and a set of phenomenological rules for sediment deposition and erosion. The outputs of the model include a depth-averaged flow field, water surface elevation and bed topography that evolve in time. Results show that DeltaRCM is able (1) to resolve a wide range of channel dynamics – including elongation, bifurcation, avulsion and migration – and (2) to produce a variety of deltas such as alluvial fan deltas and deltas with multiple orders of bifurcations. We also demonstrate a simple stratigraphy recording component which tracks the distribution of coarse and fine materials and the age of the deposits. Essential processes that must be included in reduced-complexity delta models include a depth-averaged flow field that guides sediment transport a nontrivial water surface profile that accounts for backwater effects at least in the main channels, both bedload and suspended sediment transport, and topographic steering of sediment transport.

Due to the active development of industries using nuclear technology, the creation of highly effective and cost-effective building materials for protection against hazardous ionizing radiation is of increasing interest. Widespread in the field of radiation-protective building materials are barite-containing concrete. The purpose of this article is to establish the prospects of their use in nuclear facilities, as well as to find ways to improve their technical and operational characteristics. For this an analysis of relevant literature and scientific research in the field of radiation-protective materials and, in particular, barite-containing concrete was carried out. The advantages of barite-containing concrete are high radiation-protective properties, environmental friendliness, high density, as well as economic indicators. The disadvantages are high susceptibility to shrinkage deformation and poor resistance to cyclic temperature effects. The addition of barite to the concrete composition allows to increase the coefficient of linear absorption of -rays of the material; also, with the proper selection of the composition, such material may have strength characteristics equal to or superior to the characteristics of concrete with standard compositions. Barite-containing materials have a wide range of applications and can be used both for the production of heavy concrete in the construction of load-bearing structures and in the creation of radiation-protective coatings for walls and floors.

A model of face seal lubrication is proposed and developed. Hydrodynamic lubrication for rough surfaces, surface waviness, asperity load support, elastic deflection, and wear are considered in the model. Predictions of the ratio of hydrodynamic load support to asperity load support are made for a face seal sealing a low viscosity liquid where some contact does occur and surface roughness is important. The hydrodynamic lubrication is caused by circumferential surface waviness on the seal faces. Waviness is caused by initial out of flatness or any of the various distortions that occur on seal ring faces in operation. The equilibrium solution to the problem yields one dimensional hydrodynamic and asperity pressure distributions, mean film thickness, elastic deflection, and friction for a given load on the seal faces. The solution is found numerically. It is shown that the fraction of hydrodynamic load support depends on many parameters including the waviness amplitude, number of waves around the seal, face width, ring stiffness, and most importantly, surface roughness. For the particular seal examined the fraction of load support would be small for the amount of waviness expected in this seal. However, if the surface roughness were lower, almost complete lift-off is possible. The results of the analysis show why the initial friction and wear rates in mechanical face seals may vary widely; the fraction of hydrodynamic load support depends on the roughness and waviness which are not necessarily controlled. Finally, it is shown how such initial waviness effects disappear as the surface profile is altered by wear. This may take a long or short time, depending on the initial amount of hydrodynamic load support, but unless complete liftoff is achieved under all operating conditions, the effects of initial waviness will vanish in time for steady state conditions. Practical implications are drawn for selecting some seal parameters to enhance initial hydrodynamic load support without causing significant leakage.

Friction is the force resisting relative motion between surfaces in contact. The coefficient of friction is the ratio of the frictional force to the normal load. Consequently the measurement of friction involves measurement of a normal load, movement of a surface, and measurement of a tangential force. The first part of this review paper deals with the basic principles of the friction process. The second part is concerned with experimental methods of measuring the friction.

AbstractA direct optical method for measuring the “instantaneous” profile of the sea surface with an accuracy of 1 mm and a spatial resolution of 3 mm is described. Surface profile measurements can be carried out on spatial scales from units of millimeters to units of meters with an averaging time of 10−4 s. The method is based on the synchronization of the beginning of scanning a laser beam over the sea surface and the beginning of recording the radiation scattered on the surface onto the video camera matrix. The heights of all points of the profile are brought to a single point in time, which makes it possible to obtain “instantaneous” profiles of the sea surface with the frequency of video recording. The measurement technique and data processing algorithm are described. The errors of the method are substantiated. The results of field measurements of the parameters of sea waves are presented: amplitude spectra, distribution of slopes at various spatial averaging scales. The applied version of the wave recorder did not allow recording capillary oscillations, but with some modernization it will be possible. The method is completely remote, does not distort the properties of the surface, is not affected by wind, waves and sea currents, it allows you to measure the proportion of foam on the surface. The possibility of applying the proposed method at any time of the day and in a wide range of weather conditions has been experimentally proved.

This article presents a detailed analytical model to evaluate piston skirt tribology under hydrodynamic lubrication. The contribution of the piston ring pack lubrication has been taken into account to study piston secondary motion and tribological performance. A system of nonlinear equations comprising Reynolds equation and force equilibrium is solved to calculate piston ring pack friction force and its moment about wrist pin axis. Instantaneous minimum oil film thickness at piston ring/liner interface has been estimated considering different boundary conditions: full Sommerfeld, oil separation, and Reynolds cavitation and reformation. The ring pack model has capability to be used for a wide range of ring face profiles under boundary and hydrodynamic lubrication. Piston secondary motion is evaluated using lubrication theory and equilibrium of forces and moments, to examine the effect of wrist pin location, piston skirt/liner clearance, and oil rheology. Numerical method and finite difference scheme have been used to define piston eccentricity and hydrodynamic pressure acting over the skirt.

In the present work, the relationship curve of the coefficient of friction (COF) with varying loads of different morphology WS2 lubricating additives in the friction process at various sliding speeds was studied. On this basis, wear marks and elements on the wear surfaces after friction were analyzed, and then the anti-wear and mechanism effects of WS2 of different forms in the lubrication process were discussed. Meanwhile, the Stribeck curve was used to study the lubrication state of the lubricating oil in the friction process. It was revealed that the COF of lubricating oil containing lamellar WS2 decreased by 29.35% at optimum condition and the minimum COF was concentrated at around 100 N. The COF of lubricating oil containing spherical WS2 decreased by 30.24% and the minimum coefficient was concentrated at 120 N. The extreme pressure property of spherical WS2 was better than that of lamellar WS2, and the wear resistance of spherical WS2 was more stable when the load was over 80 N. The different morphology of WS2 additives can play anti-wear and anti-friction roles within a wide range of sliding speeds.

Photochemical water oxidation, as a half-reaction of water splitting, represents a great challenge towards the construction of artificial photosynthetic systems. Complexes of first-row transition metals have attracted great attention in the last decade due to their pronounced catalytic efficiency in water oxidation, comparable to that exhibited by classical platinum-group metal complexes. Cobalt, being an abundant and relatively cheap metal, has rich coordination chemistry allowing construction of a wide range of polynuclear architectures for the catalytic purposes. This review covers recent advances in application of cobalt complexes as (pre)catalysts for water oxidation in the model catalytic system comprising [Ru(bpy)3]2+ as a photosensitizer and S2O82− as a sacrificial electron acceptor. The catalytic parameters are summarized and discussed in view of the structures of the catalysts. Special attention is paid to the degradation of molecular catalysts under catalytic conditions and the experimental methods and techniques used to control their degradation as well as the leaching of cobalt ions.
