The internet and social media provide students with a range of academic benefits and opportunities to enhance their learning process. The main goal of this research is to examine the impact of using the social media on the academic performance. The new social networks, such as Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, etc., can affect the behavior and academic performance of the college teachers, therefore the selected sample as college teachers in rural and urban area. The analysis carried out through some statistical techniques and made some meaningful concluding remarks. KEYWORDS: Graphical Representation, Chi-square Test, Proportion Test, Level of significance.

Aim: Students’ academic performance is an important criterion that is considered for career opportunity in academia and industry as such the onus is on students to perform well academically in order to stand a chance of holding their own in a competitive and saturated labour market. The fact however is that a number of factors within and outside the classroom combine to determine how well students perform academically. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine the impact of factors such as gender, study habits, faculty of study, extracurricular activities, boyfriend/girlfriend relationship, social media usage and type of secondary school attended on students’ academic performance in Bowen University. Study Design:  A survey research design was used which employed a questionnaire capable of gathering large amount of quantitative and qualitative data. Place and Duration of Study: Bowen University, Iwo, Nigeria between March 2017 and May 2017. Methodology: A self-designed survey questionnaire was administered to a sample of 380 students (144 males, 236 females) drawn from a population of 3,819 students using multi-stage sampling technique. Data collected during the survey were processed and analyzed using various statistical techniques including frequencies, percentages, independent samples t-test, analysis of variance test and Chi-Square test for independence.  Results: Survey results indicated that gender, involvement in extracurricular activities, involvement in boyfriend/girlfriend relationship, study habit and social media usage significantly impact upon student’s academic performance while the type of secondary attended and the faculty of study were found not to significantly affect academic performance of the students. Conclusion: The survey results demonstrated that some of the considered factors significantly affect academic performance of students while some do not. As such, it is important for students to develop good study habits that will enable them spend more time studying while also cutting down on the number of hours spent daily on social media. In the same vein, students should be more involved in extracurricular activities that promote fitness, total wellness and team work. In addition, relationships should be well managed to ensure that they do not negatively impact on students’ academic performance.

Social media are computer tools that allow people to share or exchange information’s, ideas, images, videos and even more with each other through a particular network. Smartphones and the evolution of new ICTs have enabled people, especially the youth, to stay connected to their social and professional network. This has resulted in compulsive checking for status updates and messages, for fear of missing out (FOMO). FOMO, which is a form of internet addiction, has its downside among students. This chapter is an empirical study that seeks to examine the disruptive effect of FOMO on the academic performance of students. Four hundred twenty-two university students were surveyed on their use of internet (social media services) and its result on their academic activities. A Likert scale was used to measure their use of the internet (social media) and its relationship with their academic performance. Chi-square and factor analysis were conducted. The results showed that continuous use of internet had negative effect on students' academic performance and it affected the female students more than their male counterparts. Tertiary institutions should intensify guidance and counselling sessions for students in order to mitigate the negative effects of use of internet on students.

Background: Social media is basically a tool for someone to interact with other people with use of internet. In futher, social media is not only used as a tool for interact with others, but it can be used on learning process. This study aims to analyse correlation betwen duration of using a social media with academic performance.Method: This study used a cross sectional design. Respondents on this study are 126 undergraduates students on fourth years in Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Islam Sumatera Utara. Using of a social media are measured by how long a student use of a social media based on their purpose (learning or entertainment). Results from the measurement will grouping into two different group, that is using of a social media for learning group and for entertainment group. The academic performance was measured by calculating a Grade Point Average (GPA) of each student. The collected data were analyzed by using Spearman Correlation method.Results: There was a significant correlation betwen duration of using a social media for learning process with academic performance (r = 0,554, p = 0,0001). Similarly, there are a significant correlation betwen duration of using a social media for entertainment with academic performance (r = -0,568, p = 0,0001), but the coefficient correlation have a negative value.Conclusion: The social media have an impact to academic performance, where the students who used more social media as a learning process have a good GPA and the students who used more social media as a entertainment have a bad GPA. Sugesstions that can be given based on this study are the use of social media can be considered as a tool for helping students enhancing learning process.

Abstract: The paper underscores the infrastructural facility and the student’s academic performance in Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Ondo State, Nigeria. Thirty questionnaires were administered through a systematic sampling technique in each of the six faculties making a total of 180 questionnaires. The paper has found out a positive relationship between the student’s academic performance, power supply and health facilities. However, the internet facilities and transportation facilities were not adequate, whereas water supply was adequate. A test of the impact of infrastructural facility on the student’s academic performance, using a Chi Square statistical technique revealed a significant value of 177.1 at 0.05 % level. The paper recommends that the existing facilities should be upgraded and significantly improved by the government; urgent attention should be given to the development of the internet facilities and transportation sector of the University. Also, private partnership should be encouraged in the infrastructural development of the University.

The main objective of this study was to analyse the influence of social media participation on academic performance. The sample consisted of 1960 students taking one of two courses at undergraduate or postgraduate level, respectively (Faculty of Education, National Distance Education University, Spain), of whom 411 students carried out an activity based on social media participation. We used a mixed quantitative (descriptive analysis and ANOVA) and qualitative (content analysis) design. Our results showed that the students who participated in a social media-based activity presented better academic performance than those who did not carry out any activity or who took part in a more traditional learning activity. We conclude that regardless of educational level, social media participation exerts a positive influence on performance. Consequently, it is important to consider the variable of social networking site use because this can partially explain academic performance. We also found that the networks generated during the course did not constitute stable communities of practice. Our main recommendation is that three stages of instruction should be considered when designing a course based on social media participation: beginners, intermediate, and professional.
