The current study was conducted for 90 days in order to study the efficacy of dietary chitosan and antibiotic ciprofloxacin supplement as a resistance and presentation of fishes against the bacteria (Pseudomonas aeruginosa) by effect on liver and spleen of fishes. The fishes were divided into four categories of groups at two periods; the former at infection (at 90th day of feeding period) and the latter at post infection (14 days after the challenge period). The first and second groups (T1 and T2) were considered as negative and positive controls (both fed on standard diet), respectively, while the third and fourth groups (T3 and T4) represent dietary chitosan and dietary antibiotic supplement, respectively. All groups, except T1, were challenged by bacteria at 90th day of feeding period. Liver of positive control revealed severe degeneration, especially around hepatic vein with congestion and fibrosis, while the spleen exhibited haemorrhage, lymphocytosis and lymphatic accumulation of white pulp with hemosiderin. The histopathological changes in liver of chitosan group at the infection period were characterized by vacuolation, inflammatory cells and hemorrhage, while necrosis and swelling of hepatocytes and infiltration with inflammatory cells at post infection period. The spleen at the infection period was suffered from leukocytosis, accumulation of inflammatory cells and macrophages, presence of focus from phagocytic macrophages. The liver in antibiotic group of infection period displayed narrowing of the sinusoid, swelling of hepatocytes and infiltration with inflammatory cells, hyperplasia in the bile duct, while the abnormal accumulation of lymphatic follicles. At postinfection period, the spleen showed thickness at the wall capsule, presence of homogeneous pinkish matter around arteriole in the red pulp and lymphocytosis in the white pulp. The supplemented chitosan groups showed a significant decrease in the mortality percentage . The supplemented chitosan groups showed a significant decrease in the mortality percentage.

Abstract. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of α-tocopherol supplementation at two doses (600 and 1200 mg × kg–1) on kidney antioxidant status and the histopathological changes in Wistar rats after 12 weeks of exposure at different diets. Forty rats has been divided into 4 groups of 10 rats each, the control group received basal diet with 5 % fresh sunflower oil (FSO), the second group: 5 % oxidized sunflower oil (OSO), the third group: 5 % OSO supplemented with 600 mg × kg–1 α-tocopherol and the fourth group: 5 % OSO supplemented with 1200 mg × kg–1 α-tocopherol. In OSO groups, the results showed highly significant increases of LPO (from 31.3 ± 0.9 to 53.8 ± 1.2 nmol of MDA formed/min/mg protein, p < 0.0001) with a significant decrease (p < = 0.001) of the antioxidant enzymatic activities (CAT, SOD, GPX, GR and G6PDH), body weight (339 ± 9 to 290 ± 3 g) and α-tocopherol levels (13.6 ± 0.6 to 6.5 ± 0.4 μg/mg protein). In OSO groups with 600 mg × kg–1 α-tocopherol, an antioxidant effect was found, reflected by a return of the parameters to values similar to those of the control group. However, higher doses of α-tocopherol (1200 mg × kg–1) induced a depletion of antioxidant status, α-tocopherol levels (6.0 ± 0.3 μg/mg protein, p < 0.001) and a very highly significant rise (p < 0.0001) of LPO content (54.86 ± 0.01 nmol of MDA formed/min/mg protein). The kidney tissues also showed changes in glomerular, severe inflammatory cells infiltration, and formation of novel vessels. So, we can conclude that the oxidative stress is attenuated by a moderate administration of 600 mg × kg–1 α-tocopherol, while a pro-oxidant effect occurs at 1200 mg × kg–1 α-tocopherol.

Objectives: Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogen that has an innate resistance to some antibiotics. This bacterium is one of the mostcommon causes of nosocomial infections that include surgical wound infections, burns, and urinary tract infections. The bacteria have been reportedlyresistant to many antibiotics and have developed multidrug resistance (MDR). The objective of the study was to determine the resistance pattern ofP. aeruginosa isolated from clinical samples of patients against some major antibiotics. Methods: Isolates of P. aeruginosa were obtained from clinical sample of urine, sputum, swabs, pus, feces, and blood and cultured in cetrimide agar. P.aeruginosa ATCC 27853 was used as a positive control. The antibacterial susceptibility testing was conducted against 13 antibiotics: Ceftazidime, cefotaxime, ceftriaxone, cefoperazone, ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, ofloxacin, gentamicin, amikacin, piperacillin, ticarcillin, meropenem, and imipenem. The examinationwas carried out using agar diffusion method of Kirby-Bauer and following the standards from Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI).Results: The results showed that bacterial resistance was established against all tested antibiotics. The highest number of resistance was shownagainst ceftriaxone (44.21%), whereas the most susceptibility was exhibited against amikacin (only 9.47% of resistance). MDR P. aeruginosa (MDRPA)was detected on almost all clinical samples tested, except the feces. The sample with the highest percentage of MDRPA was the pus. Conclusion: The study concludes that the most effective antibiotic against P. aeruginosa is amikacin (91.51%), whereas the most resistance is exhibited to ceftriaxone (43.16%).

Background: Prophylactic extraction of the asymptomatic impacted third molar is routinely practiced in Europe and the United States. The justification for prophylactic extraction includes the need to reduce the risk of pathologic changes such as cysts and tumors.   Objectives: This study aimed to study the histological and radiological changes in the tooth follicles of upper and lower complete impacted 3rd molars -which appeared radiologically normal. Material and method: A prospective study included fifty patients aged 20 years and above who were referred to the Oral Surgery Clinic, Faculty of Dentistry, University of Sana'a. Patients had follicular space between (2.5mm -3mm) as measured by the panoramic X-ray. These teeth were removed surgically and the follicle was sent for histopathological examination. Results: Most histopathological changes were in dental follicles with a size of <2.5 mm (86%), and only 14% with 2.5 mm - 3 mm. There was statistical significance between the smallest size of dental follicles with the incidence of pathological histological changes indicating a high probability of developing neoplasm (p =0.008).  Of the 50 follicular patients, 28% showed HC, nine (64%) had ameloblastoma, four (29%) had a dentigerous cyst, and only one case (7%) had a multicalcified focus with islands of odontogenic epithelium. While 72% of the samples had normal follicles and non-specific chronic inflammatory cells. There is an association between female sex and pathological histological changes (12 females: 2 males, p =0.008), age group 21-25 years (93% HC), with mandibles (65% HC). Regarding angle and histopathological changes, 36% were vertical, 29% mesioangular, 14.2% horizontal and destioangular, and 7.1% buccoangular. Conclusion:  High incidence of HC occurred in patients with DF, and it was associated with smaller dental follicle size, most HC was ameloblastoma, followed by dentigerous cyst, while 72% of samples had normal follicles and non-specific chronic inflammatory cells. There is a correlation between female gender, younger age group, and jaw position with HC. Prophylactic extraction of the asymptomatic impacted third molar should be routinely practiced in Yemen, to reduce the risk of pathological changes, especially in females and younger age groups.                            Peer Review History: Received 11 January 2021; Revised 8 February; Accepted 28 February, Available online 15 March 2021 UJPR follows the most transparent and toughest ‘Advanced OPEN peer review’ system. Cigarette smoke (CS) exposure results in lung damage and inflammation through mitochondrial dysfunction. Mitochondria quality control is sustained by Miro1 (Rhot1), a calcium-binding membrane-anchored GTPase by its interaction with PINK1/Parkin during mitophagy. However, the exact mechanism that operates this interaction of mitophagy machinery in Miro1 degradation and CS-induced mitochondrial dysfunction that results in lung inflammation remains unclear. We hypothesized that mitochondrial Miro1 plays an important role in regulating mitophagy machinery and resulting lung inflammation by CS in mouse lung. We showed a role of Miro1 in CS-induced mitochondrial dysfunction and quality control mechanisms. The Rhot1Fl/Fl (WT) and lung epithelial cell-specific Rhot1 KO were exposed to mainstream CS for 3 days (acute) and 4 months (chronic). The cellular infiltration, cytokines, and lung histopathology were studied for the inflammatory response in the lungs. Acute CS exposure showed a notable increase in the total inflammatory cells, macrophages, and neutrophils associated with inflammatory mediators and Miro1 associated mitochondrial quality control proteins Parkin and OPA1. Chronic exposure showed an increase infiltration of total inflammatory cells and neutrophils versus air controls. Histopathological changes, such as pulmonary macrophages and neutrophils were increased in CS exposed mice. The epithelial Miro1 ablation led to augmentation of inflammatory cell infiltration with alteration in the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and histopathological changes. Thus, CS induces disruption of mitochondrial quality control mechanisms, and Rhot1/Miro1 mediates the process of CS-induced mitochondrial dysfunction ensuing lung inflammatory responses.

This study investigated the sero-conversion period in which dogs from endemic areas test positive for visceral leishmaniasis (VL) as well as the early post-infection period in which renal alterations are observed. Dogs that were initially negative for Canine Visceral Leishmaniasis (CVL) were clinically evaluated every three months by serological, parasitological and biochemical tests until sero-conversion was confirmed, and six months later a subsequent evaluation was performed. Samples of kidney tissues were processed and stained with Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E), Periodic Acid Schiff (PAS) and Masson’s trichrome stain and lesions were classified based on the WHO criteria. Of the 40 dogs that initially tested negative for VL, 25 (62.5%) exhibited positive serological tests during the study period. Of these 25 dogs, 15 (60%) tested positive within three months, five (20%) tested positive within six months and five (20%) tested positive within nine months. The dogs exhibited antibody titers between 1:40 and 1:80 and 72% of the dogs exhibited clinical symptoms. The Leishmania antigen was present in the kidneys of recently infected dogs. We found higher levels of total protein and globulin as well as lower levels of albumin in the infected dogs when compared to the control dogs. Additionally, infected dogs presented levels of urea and creatinine that were higher than those of the uninfected dogs. Glomerulonephritis was detected in some of the dogs examined in this study. These data suggest that in Teresina, the sero-conversion for VL occurs quickly and showed that the infected dogs presented abnormal serum proteins, as well as structural and functional alterations in the kidneys during the early post-infection period.
