Torwali is an endangered and less-studied language spoken in the north of Pakistan. Recently, the community celebrated publication of the first ever Torwali dictionary both in print and an online version. This paper discusses issues and challenges regarding lexicography of a previously non-written language; from data collection by the native speakers having no set goals and training or institutional support, to organization and presentation of the data for producing multiple versions of the dictionary. The first section describes the process of developing the database using the methods of wordlists and semantic domains. The proceeding sections describe the technical development of its printed and online version in detail, and discuss orthographical, technical, computational and social concerns of the project. The paper concludes with recommendations for future dimensions of the present work and for similar projects with special consideration to lexicographical work on non-written languages.

The relativization devices of a language can be hierarchized according to case codification on the basis of linguistic typology, diachrony and acquisition studies. Yet, such a scale is sensitive to the variation between spoken and written language. In Spanish, the canonical relative, proper of the written language, fills a clause internal slot of the relative. Spoken language, however, drastically reduces morphosyntactic marking (as shown, e.g., by the depronominalization of the relative marker and by quesuismo), while at the same time simplifying the semantic compatibility relations with the antecedent (extending, e.g., the use of donde ‘where’). We propose to analyze native speakers’ and language learners’ errors, including those stemming from hypercorrection, in order to find out which are the prevailing relativization strategies. The tension between grammatical economy and communicative efficiency explains the fluctuation between simplification, on the one hand, characterized by the loss of prepositions and by the use of marked relative forms (e.g. cuyo ‘whose’), and on the other, the recovery of information, e.g. through the use of resumptive pronouns. Special attention will be paid to the so-called “subordinate subject relative attraction”, which privileges clause-internal concordance relations.

ABSTRACTThis research aims to describe the use of adverb literally by a native speaker. It is qualitative descriptive research. The main source of this research is the data from one of the online corpora, namely Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA). There are three steps used in this research, namely the data collection, the data analysis, and the display of the analysis of the results. Based on the data from COCA, this research tries to describe the frequency of the use of adverb literally in COCA and how the adverb is used in the sentence by knowing the particle that follows it. Theories used in this research are the theory of adverb by Pichler (2016) which is supported by the theory by Murphy (1993) and the types of an adverb by Frank (1972). The result shows that the frequency of use of the word literally in COCA amounted to 39.109 contained in the range of 1990 to 2019. The adverb is mostly used in the context of spoken language which is 8.339. The collocation and the concordance lines in COCA are used to find out the particle that follows the adverb literally. The collocation in this research is divided into three classes of words, namely verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. Based on the concordance lines of adverbs in COCA, we can know that the adverb does not have the same position in the sentence. The position of adverb literally can change based on the context of the sentence.
