On December 14, 1799, 3 prominent physicians—Craik, Brown, and Dick—gathered to examine America’s first president, George Washington. He was complaining of severe throat symptoms and was being treated with bloodletting, blistering, and enemas. Dick advised performing an immediate tracheotomy to secure the airway. Both Craik and Brown were not keen on trying tracheotomy and overruled that proposal. Washington was not involved in making that decision. He most likely had acute epiglottitis that proved to be fatal at the end. If Dick had prevailed, a tracheotomy could have saved Washington’s life. Human factors analysis of these events shows that his physicians were totally fixated on repeating futile treatments and could not comprehend the need for a radical alternative, like tracheotomy. That was aggravated by an impaired situational awareness and significant resistance to change. Leadership model was also based on hierarchy instead of competency, which might have also contributed to Washington’s death.

A feature of late modern society is the economisation and privatisation of social life resulting in a decline in the public realm. Judt has observed that we are drifting toward a society of ‘gated individuals who do not know how to share public space to common advantage’ (2010: 216). Similarly Oldenburg (1989) has expressed concerns about the sustainability of third places – places that occupy the space between the marketplace, workplace and home place – in the modern era. He argues that ‘third places’ are being replaced by ‘non-places’ – places where individuals relate to each other purely in utilitarian terms. Non-places promote civil disaffiliation rather than civil integration. This article argues for an exploration of the ‘spaces of potential’ within the public realm of the city that can help to promote relationships of trust, respect and mutuality. Acknowledging and promoting such ‘spaces of potential’ amounts to a challenge to the privatisation and economisation of social life. Moreover, it creates the possibility of a reinvigorated public sphere and an enhancement of civil integration.

This study discussed the renewal of leadership models in Al-Qur'an-based pesantren. Leadership in pesantren has a major influence on its development and existence. Ibn Abbas Islamic Boarding School is interesting to study because it is modern managed. This is a case study to examine in depth the developed leadership model. The data were collected through observation, documentation, and interview, and analyzed using the Miles Huberman triangulation model, so that the results were in the form of abstractions showing their novelty. Pesantren Ibnu Abbas Klaten is led by a director who acted as a manager as well as mufti and kyai. The director supervises three educational units; the pesantren, the santri, and the school unit, which each led by a chief. Even though a director (or Kyai) has full leadership rights, the "syuro-participative" leadership model is implemented in regular meetings every week, and the deliberation results showing the participation of each existing institution. This indicated that the highest forum is at the leadership meeting, not unilaterally by the Kyai.

However, there are obstacles faced in the implementation of participatory decision-making procedures, there are teachers and employees who feel that participatory decision making seems slow and the presence of principals is relatively lacking due to their duties and responsibilities outside of school. The efforts made by the head are to give the maximum understanding to the teachers and their employees to prepare data before making decisions so that the impression of being slow can be minimized. In connection with the lack of attendance of school principals, it can be overcome by utilizing the delegation model to their representatives, and besides that, the principal uses the meeting time every week which is led by the headmaster himself.Suggestions in this study for several parties, especially to the principal in improving school productivity, namely the participatory leadership model in the decision-making procedures applied by the headmaster of the Labschool Kebayoran High School Jakarta to be further improved according to the situation and needs of the teachers and employees. Keywords: Parsitipative Leadership, Procedure, Implementation and Decision Making

On the one hand, this is the result of the declining degree of cohesiveness and disorientation of the family due to industrialization and individualization. On the other hand, it is the effect of the increasing expectation of society toward family institution as the result of the failure of the institutions outside family circles to implant and defend some values in life.
