Studies on the discovery of the chemical potential of 2,4,6-trihydroxytoluene, which has become an affordable reagent in organic synthesis after the development at IPCET SB RAS (Institute for problems of chemical and energetic technologies of the Siberian branch оf the Russian academy of sciences) of technology for its preparation from 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene, we have been conducting systematic studies in recent years to obtain it basis of various multifunctional carbo- and heterocyclic compounds. The paper presents the results of a study of the biological and antioxidant activity of hydroxyderivatives of 2-benzylidenebenzofuran-3(2H)-ones obtained on the basis of 2,4,6-trihydroxytoluene. The compounds studied in the work showed high inhibitory activity against selected test strains (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis). A study of the fungicidal activity of the synthesized compounds showed that the percentage of suppression of fungal strains (Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus, Penicillium chrysogenum, Ulocladium atrum and Penicillium funiculosum) ranges from 0-20%. The antioxidant properties of the synthesized aurons were studied by cyclic voltammetry on a carbon-metal electrode. Ethanol solutions of rutin and quercetin were used as reference standards. The total antioxidant activity (∑AOA) was estimated spectrophotometrically using a liquid-phase reaction with a chromophore radical, 2,2′-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH•), according to the degree of “radical uptake” (P). It was shown that all compounds have moderate antioxidant activity, which depends mainly on the number of hydroxyl groups and their position in the compound molecule. The work shows the value of 4,6-dihydroxy-7-methylbenzofuran-3(2H)-one as a building block for combinatorial chemistry.

Abstract The thermal antioxidant behavior of carbon black was studied in vulcanized cis-polybutadiene and related to the surface chemistry of the black. Continuous and intermittent stress relaxation and oxygen absorption measurements were employed to determine the antioxidant ability of the carbon blacks. The blacks were characterized by the surface concentrations of oxygen-containing functional groups, using methods described in the literature. Antioxidant activity was found to be highest in carbons containing relatively large amounts of bound oxygen. These carbons are also acidic and decompose peroxides by the ionic mechanism. This was demonstrated with cumyl peroxide. However, even though the acidity and ability to decompose cumyl peroxide to phenol and acetone could be destroyed by methylation, this treatment did not seriously impair the antioxidant activity, so that the role of acidic groups appears to be minor. Evidence is presented which suggests strongly that the antioxidant behavior of carbon blacks is due to surface quinones, possibly hydrogen-bonded with adjacent hydroxyl groups. Measurements made on samples vulcanized in peroxide and sulfur curing systems indicate that the antioxidant behavior of carbon black is independent of the method of vulcanization in the absence of other antioxidants. A characteristic feature of the antioxidant action of carbon blacks is their tendency to repress the oxidative crosslinking reactions, the relative amount of compensation of chain scission by crosslinking being smaller than in gum vulcanizates.

The aim of this study was to determine the impending antioxidant properties of different extracts of crude methanolic extract (CME) of leaves ofLannea coromandelica(L. coromandelica) and its two ethyl acetate (EAF) and aqueous (AqF) subfractions by employing various establishedin vitrosystems and estimation of total phenolic and flavonoid content. The results showed that extract and fractions possessed strong antioxidant activityin vitroand among them, EAF had the strongest antioxidant activity. EAF was confirmed for its highest phenolic content, total flavonoid contents, and total antioxidant capacity. The EAF was found to show remarkable scavenging activity on 2,2-diphenylpicrylhydrazyl (DPPH) (EC5063.9 ± 0.64 µg/mL), superoxide radical (EC508.2 ± 0.12 mg/mL), and Fe2+chelating activity (EC506.2 ± 0.09 mg/mL). Based on ourin vitroresults, EAF was investigated forin vivoantioxidant assay. Intragastric administration of the EAF can significantly increase levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione (GSH), and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) levels, and decrease malondialdehyde (MDA) content in the liver and kidney of CCl4-intoxicated rats. These new evidences show thatL. coromandelicabared antioxidant activity.

The article presents the results of a biochemical study of the total antioxidant activity of water during the Clarias gariepinus farming in closed containment aquaculture system, including the dynamics without replacement. For the first time is shown an increasing the total antioxidant activity with the highest values in the lower part of the biological filter. According to the results of daily observation, the fish behavior was adequate until the end of the experiment, which was stopped with the beginning of their mass death (more than 20%). Researches have shown the promise of using the indicator of total antioxidant activity to assess the work of the closed containment aquaculture system for hydrobionts farming. The issues of reducing the cost of farmed fish by the closed containment aquaculture system using aquaponics, which distinguished among other technologies by the high quality of environmentally friendly food products while significantly saving water resources which is an important problem for closed containment aquaculture system are considered. Food plants feed on bacteria from the waste products of fish while they consume the necessary secretion products from water – chemicals (nitrogenous, potassium, phosphorus compounds), naturally purifying the water. Aquaponics simulates the natural whirlpool, using the natural processes of fish vital functions for plants nutrient medium. As food plants can be used Salicornia europaea and glycophyte Nasturtium officinale, which has a high productivity and high content of vitamins, iron and glycosides. Both plants are tested in the closed containment aquaculture system including human, increased degree of isolation.

Quinazolinones represent an important scaffold in medicinal chemistry with diverse biological activities. Here, two series of 2-substituted quinazolin-4(3H)-ones were synthesized and evaluated for their antioxidant properties using three different methods, namely DPPH, ABTS and TEACCUPRAC, to obtain key information about the structure–antioxidant activity relationships of a diverse set of substituents at position 2 of the main quinazolinone scaffold. Regarding the antioxidant activity, ABTS and TEACCUPRAC assays were more sensitive and gave more reliable results than the DPPH assay. To obtain antioxidant activity of 2-phenylquinazolin-4(3H)-one, the presence of at least one hydroxyl group in addition to the methoxy substituent or the second hydroxyl on the phenyl ring in the ortho or para positions is required. An additional ethylene linker between quinazolinone ring and phenolic substituent, present in the second series (compounds 25a and 25b), leads to increased antioxidant activity. Furthermore, in addition to antioxidant activity, the derivatives with two hydroxyl groups in the ortho position on the phenyl ring exhibited metal-chelating properties. Our study represents a successful use of three different antioxidant activity evaluation methods to define 2-(2,3-dihydroxyphenyl)quinazolin-4(3H)-one 21e as a potent antioxidant with promising metal-chelating properties.

The paper presents new data on chemical composition and antioxidant properties in extracts of the aerial organs of Saponaria officinalis growing on the territory of the Republic of Buryatia. It was revealed that soapberry leaves extracts contain a number of organic acids such as oxalic, formic, fumaric, succinic, malic, citric, and benzoic ones, the dominant being formic, malic, acetic and citric acids. Of vitamins B2, B3. BC extracted from the plant the dominant one was riboflavin. The method of and Fthigh-performance liquid chromatography helped to reveal five compounds identified as aglycone and glycosidic in character. They are orientin, isoeryentin, isovitinexin-7-О-glycoside, orientin-7-О-glycoside, of which isovitoxin is dominant. The greatest total antioxidant activity was demonstrated by soapberry leaves and inflorescences picked up on abandoned sites of the village of Selenginsk. Extractions from Saponaria officinalis leaves showed showed antiradical and Fe2+-chelating activity comparable to that of the extractions from plants with pronounced antioxidant activity. Thus, the data obtained indicated the antioxidant activity of S.officinalis aqueous extracts due to the presence of natural flavonoids. This fact shows the plant as a promising new source of antioxidants.

One of the richest natural sources of resveratrol - the rhizome of Reynoutria japonica in East Asia is a well-known traditional herb (Hu zhang) used in various inflammatory diseases, infections, skin diseases, scald, hyperlipidemia. Although, it has been recently included in the European Pharmacopoeia, still in Europe is an untapped resource. Some of the therapeutic effects are likely to be influenced by its antioxidant properties and this in turn is frequently associated with a high stilbene content. However, some literatures suggested that other compounds than stilbenes may add to the total antioxidant capacity. Hence, the aim of this research was to examine rhizomes of R. japonica and less studied, morphologically similar species, R. sachalinensis and R. x bohemica for their phytochemical composition and antioxidant activity and to clarify the relationship between the antioxidant activity and compounds by statistical methods. HPLC/UV/ESI-MS studies of three Reynoutria species revealed 171 compounds comprising stilbenes, carbohydrates, procyanidins, flavan-3-ols, anthraquinones, phenylpropanoids, lignin oligomers, hydroxycinnamic acids, naphthalenes and their derivatives. Our studies confirmed the presence of procyanidins with high degree of polymerization, up to decamers in the rhizomes of R. japonica and brings new data on the presence of these compounds in other Reynoutria species. A procyanidin trimer digallate was described for the first time in the studied plants. Moreover, we suggested a presence of new for these species, dianthrone glycosides and previously unrecorded phenylpropanoid disaccharide esters and hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives, mainly in R. sachalinensis. Furthemore, compounds tentatively annotated as lignin oligomers were observed for the first time in studied species. The rhizomes of all Reynoutria species exhibited strong antioxidant activity. Statistical analysis demonstrated that proanthocyanidins should be considered as important contributors to the total antioxidant capacity.

The chemical composition and antibacterial, insecticidal, and antioxidant properties of the essential oil from Mentha pulegium L. (M. pulegium) growing in Morocco were investigated in this work. To achieve this goal, the oils were obtained by using hydrodistillation before being characterized by GC-MS. The antibacterial and antifungal activities were conducted against pathogenic strains using the disc diffusion and MICS bioassays. The insecticidal activity was carried out versus C. maculatus using contact and inhalation tests. The antioxidant activity was performed by using DPPH and total antioxidant capacity bioassays. The chemical analysis of the oil showed that 20 compounds were identified, which represented 98.91% of the total oil. In the oil, the main components detected were R-(+)-pulegone (76.35%), carvone (5.84%), dihydrocarvone (5.09%), and octanol-3 (2.25%). The essential oil has moderate-to-strong broad-spectrum antibacterial and antifungal properties; the results showed that B. subtilis was the most sensitive strain to M. pulegium oil, with the largest inhibition diameter (25 ± 0.33). For the antifungal activity, the results obtained indicated that Aspergillus niger was the most sensitive fungal strain to M. pulegium oil with an inhibition percentage up to 100%. Regarding the insecticidal activity, the inhalation test showed a high efficacy (100% mortality), and a lethal concentration of LC50 = 1.41 + 0.48 μL/L air was obtained after 24 hours of exposure. Moreover, the contact test showed that a total reduction in fertility and emergence was obtained with a dose of 20 μL/mL of acetone. Regarding the antioxidant activity, the sample concentration necessary to inhibit 50% of HE radicals (IC50) was 7.659 mg/mL (DPPH) and 583.066 57.05 mg EAA/g EO (TAC).

The purpose of this study was to compare the composition and contents of phenolic acids and condensed tannin in the seed coats of white and coloured varieties of pea and to examine the antioxidant properties of methanol and acetone extracts containing these phenolic compounds. The contents of phenolic acids were quantified by the HPLC analysis. The sum of free phenolic acids, those liberated from soluble esters and those liberated from soluble glycosides, was higher for coloured seed coat (78.53 g per g dry matter) than for the white seed coat (17.17 g/g dry matter). Protocatechuic, gentisic and vanillic acids were found dominant in the coloured seed coat, while ferulic and coumaric acids in the white seed coat. The content of condensed tannins was 1560 mg of catechin equivalent/100 g of coloured seed coat as determined by a vanillin assay. No condensed tannins were detected in the white seed coat. The antioxidant activity of extracts was measured by the oxidation of phosphatidylcholine to hydroxyperoxidephosphatidyl choline in the liposome system. Strong antioxidant properties were observed in a crude tannin extract from the coloured seed coat. These properties were slightly changed after the seed coat was cooked in water for 30, 60 and 90 min.

Much attention has been focused on treatment of sepsis which leads to high mortality all over the world in every year. Antioxidant activity seems to play a prominent role in the treatment of sepsis exhibited by Xuebijing injection. The aim of the present research was to develop an on-line 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl- (DPPH-) capillary electrophoresis-diode array detector (on-line DPPH-CE-DAD) method for rapidly assessing antioxidant properties and efficacious material basis of antioxidant activity as a way of quality control of Xuebijing injection. Several parameters affecting the separation were investigated, including the pH and concentrations of buffer, SDS,β-CD, and organic modifier as well as voltage and cassette temperature. Compared to previous traditional method, this improved method shortened the experimental cycle and became more efficient because it was successfully applied to analyze total antioxidant activity and contents of twelve antioxidants of Xuebijing injection under the same condition. The results revealed that the on-line DPPH-CE-DAD method was a reagent-saving, rapid, feasible, and green technique for quality control of Xuebijing injection in terms of pharmacological activity and contents of active ingredients. It also offered new opportunities for the analysis of antioxidant activity of complex matrix.

Abstract The chemical analysis of dried pomace of chokeberry, apple, black currant, strawberries and carrot was performed to determine the composition and content of nutrients and bioactive substances, among others the content of vitamins, phenolic acids, anthocyanins, and essential fatty acids. The antioxidant properties were determined in the extracts of pomace by determining the total antioxidant potential (TRAP) and antioxidant activity against DPPH radical. Tested pomaces contained 12-15% protein, approximately 18-20% crude fibre, approximately 2.7-4.0% ether extract and 1.8-3.0% ash. The highest level of anthocyanins was found in chokeberry pomace, followed by black currant pomace and several times less in strawberries and apples. The content of phenolic acids ranged from 12.91 mg/100 g in black currants to 630.30 mg/100 g in dried chokeberries. In terms of vitamins the richest source of vitamin E was chokeberry pomace (152.3 mg/100 g), while most of the carotenoids were found in dried carrot (15.35 mg/100 g). The chain of antioxidant activity was as follows: black currant>chokeberry>apple>strawberry>carrot, while in terms of antioxidative capacity it was chokeberry>apple>black currant>strawberry>carrot.
