Introduction: Tetanus has a worldwide distribution and high lethality. The goal of this study was to characterize the tetanus cases confirmed in Pernambuco and identify factors associated with death in these patients. Methods: Cross-sectional, with internal comparison groups. For data analysis we used the chi-square test and Pearson estimated the odds ratios and their respective confidence intervals at 95%. Multivariate analysis was applied to multiple logistic regression Results: The incidence of tetanus ranged between 0.65 and 2.79 cases per 100,000 inhabitants with higher involvement of adults, male and city population. Only 13.8% had received the vaccine and 23.4% received it as prophylaxis. The average mortality rate was 20.4%. In multivariate analysis, presented neck stiffness as a symptom (p = 0.029), which was associated with increased mortality. Conclusion: There is a need for greater investment in the prevention of the disease, both in immunization coverage and in the application of prophylaxis. Despite the hospitalization guarantee with proper care, there was an increase in tetanus mortality, suggesting that more specific studies should be conducted to investigate what may have influenced this change. Special attention should be offered to cases that presented neck stiffness as a symptom, because these groups have a higher chance of progressing to death.

Background: Nutritional status is the best indicator of the child health. Malnutrition has both short and long term adverse ramifications. As per NFHS III 47% children are stunted in the state of Chhattisgarh. However still many communities in the tribal dominated and naxal affected state may remain affected, hence the study was planned to identify the nutritional status of children and find out its determinant. Methods: Present cross-sectional study was conducted among 12-59 months children in the urban slum of Jagdalpur city, Bastar region of Chhattisgarh. Predesigned and pretested questionnaire was administered to the caregiver of the child, information on socio-demographic characteristics was obtained and anthropometric measurements were taken. Statistical Analysis: all frequencies were derived for completeness of data. WHO Anthro Software version 3.1.0 was used to classify the malnutrition status. Chi-square test was applied to find association between dependent variables. Results: Out of 225 children 53.3% were boys and 46.7% were girls. The overall prevalence of underweight stunting and wasting was 28.4%, 41.3%, and 19.1% respectively. Conclusions: Prevalence of underweight has reduced in the district over a period of years. However high level of stunting, a sign of chronic hunger points towards the pivotal role of socio-demographic and behavioral practices prevalent in the district. Interaction with health system in the form of ANC, institutional delivery and safeguarding effective 100% immunization coverage has shown preventive effect.

Dehydration is a lack of body fluids because the amount of fluid that comes out is more than the amount of fluid that is entered. One of the jobs that are at risk of dehydration is in boiling the manufacture of tempeh which uses a hot enough environment so that you sweat a lot and require more fluid intake. The research objective was to determine the factors associated with the incidence of dehydration in tempe craftsmen. This research is a descriptive analytic study with a cross sectional approach. The population in this study were all of the tempe craftsmen. The sample is 30 respondents. The sampling technique was total sampling. Data analysis in this study was univariate and bivariate with the chi square test. The results showed a relationship between fluid consumption (0.004) and workload (0.007) with the incidence of dehydration among workers of tempe craftsmen. There is no correlation between body weight and dehydration in tempe craftsmen workers (p = 0.875). It is expected that the tempe craftsman business owners can always provide sufficient drinking water for their workers when they need them so that the incidence of dehydration and its impact can be minimized.

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE The objective of this study is to estimate the seroprevalence of human brucellosis in livestock professionals and analyze the factors associated with brucellosis focusing on sociodemographic variables and the variables of knowledge and practices related to the characteristics of the activities carried out in livestock. METHODS This is a cross-sectional seroepidemiological study with a population of 131 workers of butchers, slaughter rooms, and slaughterhouse and 192 breeders sampled randomly in Namibe province, Angola. The data were obtained from the collection of blood and use of questionnaires. The laboratory tests used were rose bengal and slow agglutination. The questionnaire allowed us to collect sociodemographic information and, specifically on brucellosis, it incorporated questions about knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of livestock professionals. In addition to the descriptive statistical approach, we used the Chi-square test of independence, Fisher’s test, and logistic regression models, using a significance level of 10%. RESULTS The general weighted prevalence of brucellosis was 15.6% (95%CI 13.61–17.50), being it 5.3% in workers and 16.7% (95%CI 11.39–21.93) in breeders. The statistical significance was observed between human seroprevalence and category (worker and breeder) (p < 0.001) and education level (p = 0.032), start of activity (p = 0079), and service location (p = 0.055). In a multivariate context, the positive factor associated with brucellosis in professionals was the professional category (OR = 3.54; 95%CI 1.57–8.30, related to breeders in relation to workers). CONCLUSIONS Human brucellosis in livestock professionals is prevalent in Namibe province (15.6%), where the professional category was the most important factor. The seroprevalence levels detected are high when compared with those found in similar studies.
