Vitamin D related research continues to expand and theorise regarding its involvement in obesity, as both hypovitaminosis D and obesity strike in pandemic proportions. Vitamin D plays an important role in immune system through Vitamin D Receptors (VDR), which are transcription factors located abundantly in the body. Due to this characteristic, it is potentially linked to obesity, which is a state of inflammation involving the release of cytokines from adipose tissue, and exerting stress on other organs in a state of positive energy balance. Research trials in the past couple of years and systematic reviews from SCOPUS and MEDLINE will be discussed. The role of Vitamin D throughout the lifespan (from fetal imprinting until older age), and in various other obesity mediated chronic conditions shall be highlighted. Various mechanisms attributed to the inverse relationship of Vitamin D and obesity are discussed with research gaps identified, particularly the role of adipokines, epigenetics, calcium and type of adipose tissue.

Vitamin D deficiency is pandemic, spanning many continents and including all ages, genders and racial/ethnic groups. Currently, world-wide attention is focused on the importance of vitamin D in optimizing health and preventing disease. This focus is largely the result of the scientific discovery that vitamin D receptors are present in nearly every tissue and cell in the body and that adequate vitamin D status is essential for optimal functioning of these tissues and cells. An impressive body of research has accumulated over the past two decades providing new information about the role of vitamin D in prevention of a broad range of diseases. The purpose of this paper is to provide a review of this new information.

Vitamin D, a fat-soluble prohormone, is endogenously synthesized in response to sunlight or taken from dietary supplements. Since vitamin D receptors are present in most tissues and cells in the body, the mounting understanding of the role of vitamin D in humans indicates that it does not only play an important role in the musculoskeletal system, but has beneficial effects elsewhere as well. This review summarizes the metabolism of vitamin D, the research regarding the possible risk factors leading to vitamin D deficiency, and the relationships between vitamin D deficiency and numerous illnesses, including rickets, osteoporosis and osteomalacia, muscle weakness and falls, autoimmune disorders, infectious diseases, cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), cancers, and neurological disorders. The system-wide effects of vitamin D and the mechanisms of the diseases are also discussed. Although accumulating evidence supports associations of vitamin D deficiency with physical and mental disorders and beneficial effects of vitamin D with health maintenance and disease prevention, there continue to be controversies over the beneficial effects of vitamin D. Thus, more well-designed and statistically powered trials are required to enable the assessment of vitamin D’s role in optimizing health and preventing disease.

: Enormous progress in investigation of vitamin D currently being made from basic science to clinical medicine. The classic view of vitamin D function limited to calcium metabolism and bone homeostasis has undergone extensive revision and it has been revealed that vitamin D receptors exist in most tissues of the body. Nowadays, one of the most popular aspect of vitamin D in research area is its role in glucose metabolism and insulin resistance. The functional mechanism of vitamin D in metabolism includes genomic and rapid non-genomic actions which is expanded in this review. Briefly, the modulatory action of vitamin D in gene expression of insulin signaling compartments and secretion of insulin hormone may point to its role in pathogenesis and development of Type II diabetes. Vitamin D induced activation of the PI3K/AKT pathway is through PTEN-mediated AKT down regulation. Also, allelic variations in VDR and DBP might affect insulin secretion and diabetes occurrence. Vitamin D influences on insulin secretion from β-cell through calcium dependent endopeptidases which promotes the conversion of pro-insulin to insulin hence it can be declared that calcium and vitamin D are essential for insulin exocytosis. Hypovitaminosis D in obese individuals is also associated with higher levels of serum parathormone which this secondary hyperparathyroidism probably contributes to insulin resistance associated with obesity. Moreover, vitamin D is an immune modulator which may affect inflammation as a contributor of diabetes.

This article investigates the ways in which the work of The Body Politic (TBP), the first major lesbian and gay newspaper in Canada, comes to be commemorated in queer publics and how it figures in the memories of those who were involved in producing the paper. In revisiting a critical point in the history of TBP from 1985 when controversy erupted over race and racism within the editorial collective, this discussion considers the role of memory in the reproduction of whiteness and in the rupture of standard narratives about the past. As the controversy continues to haunt contemporary queer activism in Canada, the productive work of memory must be considered an essential aspect of how, when and for what reasons the work of TBP comes to be commemorated. By revisiting the events of 1985 and by sifting through interviews with individuals who contributed to the work of TBP, this article complicates the narrative of TBP as a bluntly racist endeavour whilst questioning the white privilege and racially-charged demands that undergird its commemoration. The work of producing and preserving queer history is a vital means of challenging the intentional and strategic erasure of queer existence, but those who engage in such efforts must remain attentive to the unequal terrain of social relations within which remembering forms its objects.

Background: Vitamin D exerts multiple pleiotropic effects beyond its role in calcium-phosphate metabolism. Growing evidence suggests an association between hypovitaminosis D and sleep disorders, thus increasing the interest in the role of this vitamin in the regulatory mechanisms of the sleep-wake cycle. Objective: The study aimed to explore and summarize the current knowledge about the role of vitamin D in sleep regulation and the impact of vitamin D deficiency on sleep disorders. Methods: The main regulatory mechanisms of vitamin D on sleep are explained in this study. The literature was scanned to identify clinical trials and correlation studies showing an association between vitamin D deficiency and sleep disorders. Results: Vitamin D receptors and the enzymes that control their activation and degradation are expressed in several areas of the brain involved in sleep regulation. Vitamin D is also involved in the pathways of production of Melatonin, the hormone involved in the regulation of human circadian rhythms and sleep. Furthermore, vitamin D can affect sleep indirectly through non-specific pain disorders, correlated with alterations in sleep quality, such as restless legs syndrome and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. Conclusions: : Vitamin D has both a direct and an indirect role in the regulation of sleep. Although vitamin D deficiency has been associated to sleep disorders, there is still scant evidence to concretely support the role of vitamin D supplementation in the prevention or treatment of sleep disturbances; indeed, more intervention studies are needed to better clarify these aspects.

For most individuals residing in Northwestern Europe, maintaining replete vitamin D status throughout the year is unlikely without vitamin D supplementation and deficiency remains common. Military studies have investigated the association with vitamin D status, and subsequent supplementation, with the risk of stress fractures particularly during recruit training. The expression of nuclear vitamin D receptors and vitamin D metabolic enzymes in immune cells additionally provides a rationale for the potential role of vitamin D in maintaining immune homeostasis. One particular area of interest has been in the prevention of acute respiratory tract infections (ARTIs). The aims of this review were to consider the evidence of vitamin D supplementation in military populations in the prevention of ARTIs, including SARS-CoV-2 infection and consequent COVID-19 illness. The occupational/organisational importance of reducing transmission of SARS-CoV-2, especially where infected young adults may be asymptomatic, presymptomatic or paucisymptomatic, is also discussed.

Vitamin D deficiency and the rapid increase in the prevalence of obesity are both considered important public health issues. The classical role of vitamin D is in Ca homoeostasis and bone metabolism. Growing evidence suggests that the vitamin D system has a range of physiological functions, with vitamin D deficiency contributing to the pathogenesis of several major diseases, including obesity and the metabolic syndrome. Clinical studies have shown that obese individuals tend to have a low vitamin D status, which may link to the dysregulation of white adipose tissue. Recent studies suggest that adipose tissue may be a direct target of vitamin D. The expression of both the vitamin D receptor and 25-hydroxyvitamin D 1α-hydroxylase (CYP27B1) genes has been shown in murine and human adipocytes. There is evidence that vitamin D affects body fat mass by inhibiting adipogenic transcription factors and lipid accumulation during adipocyte differentiation. Some recent studies demonstrate that vitamin D metabolites also influence adipokine production and the inflammatory response in adipose tissue. Therefore, vitamin D deficiency may compromise the normal metabolic functioning of adipose tissue. Given the importance of the tissue in energy balance, lipid metabolism and inflammation in obesity, understanding the mechanisms of vitamin D action in adipocytes may have a significant impact on the maintenance of metabolic health. In the present review, we focus on the signalling role of vitamin D in adipocytes, particularly the potential mechanisms through which vitamin D may influence adipose tissue development and function.

AbstractRecent concerns on increased incidence of myocardial infarction and stroke on administration of calcium and vitamin D supplements have alarmed the physicians about safety of these drugs. Although both calcium and vitamin D have been shown in the past to have beneficial effect on cardiovascular disease status through lowering of harmful lipids, these findings have been contradicted by some recent meta-analysis and randomized controlled trials that have shown no beneficial or in some cases a deteriorating effect of these supplements on lipid levels. In particular, calcium supplementation has been associated more with increased incidence of cardiovascular morbidity than vitamin D, but the convincing proof is still lacking. Here we have highlighted the results of some significant studies that might impact the prescription of these drugs.

Pelajau merupakan sebuah kawasan pemukiman kuna yang dikelilingi oleh sungai mati dan kini terpecah menjadi beberapa desa. Beberapa toponim menandai ramainya aktivitas pemukiman masa itu, seperti Sumur Candi, Sumur Pemandian Raja, dan Masjid Keramat Pelajau. Tulisan ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi peran Pelajau pada masa lalu dan hubungannya dengan situs pemukiman tepi sungai bagian hulu Kalimantan Selatan seperti situs Jambu Hulu, Jambu Hilir, dan Nagara. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah deskriptif dengan penalaran induktif. Teknik pengambilan data dengan observasi, wawancara dan ekskavasi, dengan analisis data secara laboratorium, morfologi dan teknologi artefak, serta pendekatan etnoarkeologi. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa Pelajau merupakan pemukiman tepi sungai mempunyai peranan yang penting terhadap perkembangan perekonomian, religi dan nasionalisme di wilayah hulu Kalimantan Selatan. Dari beberapa artefak dan tradisi yang hingga kini masih digunakan, disimpulkan bahwa budaya di Pelajau masih berlanjut dari masa dahulu hingga kini, meskipun sempat terjadi keterputusan generasi dan perubahan konsep pemaknaan terhadap Sumur Candi.Pelajau is an ancient settlement area surrounded by dead river, and nowadays it split into several villages. Some toponyms marked the high activities in the past, such as sumur candi (temple well), sumur pemandian raja (bath well of king) and Masjid Keramat Pelajau (Pelajau Sacred Mosque). This paper aims to identify the role of Pelajau in the pastand relationship of Pelajau with riverbank settlement sites at the upstream of South Kalimantan such as Jambu Hulu, Jambu Hilir and Nagara. The method used is descriptive with inductive reasoning. Data are collected through observation, interviews and excavation, and analysis data are conducted by laboratory, morphology and technological artifacts, as wellas ethnoarchaeological approach. Results from this study indicate that a riverbank settlement of Pelajau has an important role to the development of economy, religion and nationalism in the upstream region of South Kalimantan. Based on some artifacts and traditions which are still in use, it is concluded that the culture in Pelajau is continued from ancient times until present, eventhough there are disconnect generation and changeable concept of sumur candi (temple well) meaning.
