This chapter investigates the influence of computer literacy through blended learning methods on the computer-based aptitude test performance of prospective students at the University of Port Harcourt. An ex-post facto research design was used, and simple random sampling was adopted in drawing a sample of 1,720 candidates from a total population of 38,988 who wrote the examinations. A Computer Literacy Scale was developed to ascertain the computer literacy level of participants and a Results Collection Form was developed to gather test results. This study was based around nine research questions, which were answered using descriptive statistics, and nine corresponding hypotheses, which were tested using inferential statistics. Results show that computer literacy through blended leaning methods has a significant effect on performances on the computer-based test while gender has no effect. There was also a significant difference in the performance of candidates on paper and computer examinations.

The purpose of the study was to investigate the extent to which selected personals factors contributed to pupils’ low progression in primary schools in Trans-Nzoia West Sub-County. The study adopted ex-post facto research design. The target population was 1815 teachers and 91 head teachers from 91 public primary schools. Data was collected from a sample of 313 teachers and 73 head teachers through self-administered questionnaires and data collection form respectively. Proportionate, stratified and simple random sampling techniques were used to select the subjects. Construct validity of the instruments was confirmed through piloting of the study. The teachers’ questionnaires were piloted in 5 schools in Bungoma North Sub- County and their reliabilities established after testing using the internal consistency method and Cronbach Alpha coefficient of 0.92 was realized. The instruments were deemed reliable as their reliability coefficients were above 0.7 threshhold recommended for social sciences research. Data was analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics with the aid of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 21. Data was described and summarized using frequencies and percentages while hypotheses were tested at the .05 level of significance and using simple regression analysis. The results reveal that Personal factors influence progression of pupils in public primary school. The results of the study may inform the Ministry of Education, Boards of Management, parents and teachers in Trans-Nzoia West Sub-County and the country at large on factors to be addressed to enhance pupils` progression in public primary schools in the sub-county.

AbstractEvidence from literature shows that deviant behavior is on high side among undergraduates in Nigeria whereas some certain psychosocial factors causing this phenomenon have not been fully explored. This study examined whether age, gender, socio-economic status and attitude towards drug abuse determine deviant behavior among the undergraduate students. It adopted ex-post facto design. Simple random sampling technique was used to sample 269 participants. The Prescription Drug Attitudes Questionnaire (PDAQ) and Deviant Behavior Variety Scale (DBVS) were used to gather data from the participants. T-test analysis and multiple regression were used to test the formulated hypotheses. The results revealed that age, monthly allowance and attitude towards drug abuse have significant joint prediction of deviant behavior (R=.358 R2 =.128, F=10.594, p<.05) while only attitude towards drug abuse independently predicted deviant behavior (R=.236, R2 =.056 F = 17.112; p<.01). Also, there was a significant gender difference on deviant behavior [t (293) = 4.196, p<.01], where male respondents scored high significantly (M=4.09, SD=3.44) compared to female respondents (M=2.53, SD=2.31) on deviant behavior. It is therefore recommended that policy makers in educational sector and the governing council of tertiary institutions need to create awareness on the debilitating effects of drugs on students’ behavior, especially among males.

This paper studies the assessment during the first year of baccalaureate in seventy-six students. In a public educational institution of Saragossa (Spain), no differences in academic achievement between men (forty) and women (thirty-six) were found, but between two main modalities (Sciences, thirty-five students, versus Humanities and social Sciences, with forty-one students), finding differences outstrip students Sciences throughout the year, equaling to end with their counterparts. This leads us to study the hypothesis of whether the ratings could be “inflated” by teachers in Humanities students. For this they were conducted by a retrospective design “ex post facto” an multiple lineal regression analysis, using as a dependent variable grades in the third final evaluation, and as independent, performance in the first and second assessment and all subjects, not including any other variables. The results show different prediction equations that explaining 87% and 88% of the variance in the final performance, in the two types of modalities respectively. The values predicted by the model resulting in a significant percentage of “inflation” in the ratings of 23% in the group of Sciences and 37% in the Humanities and Social Sciences. The mean scores of the subjects discussed in three different moments are analyzed and significant difference was observed in the three evaluations, emerging some evaluation patterns in the teachers. It intuits that the “rating inflation” could begin much earlier than in the preuniversity entrance course.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the difference of cardiovascular endurance between secondary school soccer players and handball players. The study adopted ex-post facto design. The subjects were selected among soccer and handball players at one of the secondary schools. A total of 60 subjects were selected, 30 soccer players and 30 handball players. All subjects aged between 13 and 15 years old. The test used to test cardiovascular endurance was 12 minute Cooper Run Test. T-test was used to determine whether there is a significant difference between the cardiovascular endurance of the soccer players and handball players. The results of the study showed that there was no significant difference t(-1.65)=58, P>0.05 between soccer players (M = 2235; SD = 180.44) and handball players (M = 2307.83; SD = 160.19). Although there was no significant difference, the players from both teams still have good cardiovascular endurance fitness.
