Mobile Education Mitigating the Heavy Magnitude of Illiteracy in India

This chapter introduces the concept of mobile learning as a means of portable learning. Through the use of mobile technology, citizens of the world will be able to access learning materials and information from anywhere and at any time. Learners will not have to wait for a certain time to learn or go to a certain place to learn. It presents the evolution of classroom learning to mobile learning. There has been made an effort to explore current perspectives of mobile learning. Approaches of m-learning suggest implication of mobile devices in the classroom. Pedagogical methods and instructional approaches of m-learning have also been explored in this chapter. Further, the authors make an attempt to give rational of mobile learning through various theories of m-learning. It suggests opportunities of mobile learning in the Indian scenario. Mobile learning can effectively support a wide range of activities for learners of all ages.

There is increasing use of mobile devices around the world to conduct everyday business and to socialize. As a result, learners will be using mobile devices to access learning materials so that they can learn from anywhere and at anytime. Learning materials must be designed using proven instructional design models and learning theories. This will allow the learning system to provide flexibility in learning and to meet the needs of individual learners. In addition, good user interface design must be followed in mobile learning to allow learners to interact with the learning system and learning materials to facilitate learning from anywhere and at anytime.

As mobile devices have become a part of our everyday life, there is a lot of research going on how to make this technology more productive for the students. Most of the research studies have indicated that, mobile devices are very useful for students while a few research studies negates its effectiveness. In this paper, we have presented the literature survey conducted on the use of mobile technologies in the field of Teaching and Learning (T&L). These studies are broadly classified into three areas: Impact and learning environment; specific applications; and mobile learning framework. We will be exploring all these areas in this paper. Our review in impact and environment of mobile learning indicates that the use of mobile technology is nourishing the knowledge and learning of students in most cases. Our review on specific applications of mobile learning reveals positive impacts on learning in various fields but the key concern raised was difficulties in implementing them and not having proper control guideline. Moreover, our review on frameworks for mobile learning indicates that there are different frameworks developed for different applications. Most of the applications are limited to non-technical areas. However, we can observed that there is a lack of connectivity between course development and framework for mobile learning. Therefore, the future course developers need to address the gap by taking into account of learners’ behavior in using mobile devices and their cultures to enrich student engagement and learning.

Mobile learning (M - learning) emerges as the essential mark of technological revolution 4.0 and the great development of modern technology. It has proved that their smart functions were accompanied by the rapid expansion of mobile devices to support learning of learners everywhere and every time. Although mobile technology is expected to apply suitably to teaching and learning, the capacity of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students to use mobile devices to support their English learning needs to be thoroughly evaluated. This paper is to present how EFL learners at a Vietnam University can exploit mobile technology by questionnaire through a survey of 300 EFL students. The investigation took place during the second semester of the 2018 - 2019 school year. The quantitative approach has been used to gather and analyze data, and results have shown that EFL students are confident of learning English through mobile devices through their use of mobile technology. This shows that learning English by mobile devices is feasible and has got positive perceptions from the students. Furthermore, the research results are expected to contribute as a theoretical background as reference for future researches related to mobile learning applications.

Computer-based Assistive Technology (AT) has had a powerful effect on people with disabilities in the areas of reading, writing, communicating, and accessing information. One of the roadblocks for use has always been the expense of AT. Advancements in computing and mobile technology, however, are making some technology more readily available, accessible, and cost effective for people with disabilities. Computer operating systems, for example, now contain features to magnify screens for reading and in the entering of text. The mobile movement of smartphones, e-readers, and tablets has also been changing the way people with disabilities access information. The capabilities of these devices combined with the immediate availability, affordability, and ease of use, has been making the world more accessible for people with disabilities, and with mobile devices increasingly becoming a necessity for most, this trend is anticipated to only continue.

<p class="0abstract">Use of mobile devices among nursing students is recently a widespread approach. Integrating mobile devices in education can improve the quality of nursing education by engaging students in learning experience. The present study aims at investigating theeffect of using Mobile Learning (M-learning) on students’ academicachievements and satisfaction. Therefore, quasi-experimental design was used. The study included 104 students who were enrolled in a critical care course at the faculty of Nursing. During the study, the participant were divided into control and experimental groups. The experimental group 52 students were able to use a developed mobile application, which includes learning materials and multimedia resources, dedicated to critical care course.  On the other hand, control group 52 students were able to explore the classical learning materials form the course. The study included students’ attitudes, students’ satisfaction, and students’ academic achievements. Differences between the two groups were considered significant as the result was p &lt; 0.05. The obtained results showed significance difference between pre-post quizzes achievements between the experimental and control group (p&lt;0.000). Additionally, 76% of the students were satisfied with using M-learning. The study revealed that there was improvement in the student academic achievements and satisfaction when integrating mobile learning into nursing education<span>.</span></p>

This article aims to identify different ways of using mobile devices in students’ learning in higher education. This qualitative research presents the findings from a phenomenographic research of students’ conceptions of mobile learning (m-learning) in higher education. A cohort of 16 students from four universities of Bangladesh took part in semi-structured interviews to explore their in-depth understandings and experiences of m-learning. The findings indicate that university students perceived five qualitatively different ways of using mobile devices in their learning: a medium for communication; a medium for management of learning materials; a tool for effective learning; a means for collaborative learning; and a means for development of new ideas. The findings of this research demonstrate students’ pedagogical understanding of using mobile devices in higher education. The outcomes of this research could play a crucial role in informing students on how they can use their mobile devices for learning purposes and providing educators with empirical evidence on students’ pedagogical practices of using mobile devices in other developing and more developed countries in the world.

As mobile devices become ubiquitous, it is necessary to analyze if and how these devices can be used for learning. This systematic review is part of a larger review that analyzed 21 mobile learning research studies published from 2005-present. Eleven studies that focused specifically on student learning outcomes and processes are summarized in this review in order to better understand the direction of mobile learning in mainstream education. Overall, studies were found to be positive and indicated several benefits of using mobile devices for learning including an increase in achievement, productivity, engagement, and motivation. This paper also highlights recommendations for future research and practice in the field of mobile learning, specifically focusing on the way personal mobile device ownership may influence learning both inside and outside the classroom.

Mobile and online learning applications become more known year after year and are used today from millions of students and educators in all over the world. Wireless mobile devices like smartphones, PDAs and tablets, could be used to benefit students’ learning in or out of the classroom. In front of the idea of inclusion of mobile learning in educational process, we represent in this paper some important case studies which examine the consequence of using mobile tools and apps, as well as online applications in mathematics teaching, at all educational levels.

The use of mobile devices is increasing to exceeds millions of users and has become an important part of daily life. This wide spread has provided new advantages for a wide range of applications.
