Born in the middle of technology, kids today are “multimedia beings”, naturally dealing with electronic devices in a way that is puzzling for some adults. But many experiences with children along the years can be useful to enlighten an approach to technology not only of consumption, integrated in our “normal” life, as a part of the discovery path that every baby walk, watching and touching the world around, people, nature, objects and environments, and that many adult feel the need to recover even in their mature life. Examples are given of meeting with software and hardware, lost or forgotten technological experiences, false contrasts between the new and the old, confusion and shallowness due to the overwhelming abundance of things, need maybe to go back and “play” again, in order to fix some problems between the humans and the “digital.”

The Information SuperHighway, Email, The Internet, FTP, BBS, Modems, : all buzz words which are becoming more and more routine in our daily life. Confusing terminology? Hopefully it won't be in a few minutes, all you need is to have a handle on a few basic concepts and terms and you will be on-line with the rest of the "telecommunication experts". These terms all refer to some type or aspect of tools associated with a range of computer-based communication software and hardware. They are in fact far less complex than the instruments we use on a day to day basis as microscopist's and microanalyst's. The key is for each of us to know what each is and how to make use of the wealth of information which they can make available to us for the asking. Basically all of these items relate to mechanisms and protocols by which we as scientists can easily exchange information rapidly and efficiently to colleagues in the office down the hall, or half-way around the world using computers and various communications media. The purpose of this tutorial/paper is to outline and demonstrate the basic ideas of some of the major information systems available to all of us today. For the sake of simplicity we will break this presentation down into two distinct (but as we shall see later connected) areas: telecommunications over conventional phone lines, and telecommunications by computer networks. Live tutorial/demonstrations of both procedures will be presented in the Computer Workshop/Software Exchange during the course of the meeting.

The usage of the portable electronic devices such as the smartphones and handheld tablets has increased over the years, and this is true in the health-care industry also. This is because of the development of various patient management softwares. The use of apps to manage, educate, and inform patient is not uncommon among orthodontists nowadays. The aim of this article was to review the various apps available on the Google Play Store and iOS Apple Store for orthodontists and patients. Four smartphones using orthodontically relevant keywords such as orthodontics, orthodontists, and braces were searched and reviewed in detail. Out of the 354 orthodontically relevant apps available in both Android and Apple operating systems, the apps could be categorized as orthodontist-related apps or patient-related apps. Under these categories they could be further classified as practice managements apps, patient education apps, model analysis apps, tooth material calculators, patient reminder apps, etc.

Abstract When Germany declared war on the Soviet Union, for me, a child, the world turned upside down to become an alien condition of cruelty and death, hunger and fear. Evacuated, our family faced the War far away from Riga, our hometown, in Uzbekistan—with its strange and unfamiliar landscapes, exotic people, and very different lifestyle. Normal life ended long before the outbreak of World War II.

Recent results of GaN bulk growth performed in Poland are presented. Two technologies are described in detail: halide vapor phase epitaxy and basic ammonothermal. The processes and their results (crystals and substrates) are demonstrated. Some information about wafering procedures, thus, the way from as-grown crystal to an epi-ready wafer, are shown. Results of other groups in the world are briefly presented as the background for our work.

While much has been written on private security expansion in a few English-speaking industrialized democracies, less is known about why the industry does not develop uniformly around the world. We propose some hypotheses about constraints on private security growth in other settings, based on three comparative case studies in authoritarian states (Russia and Georgia), developing countries (Guyana and Trinidad) and non-‘Anglosphere’ industrialized democracies (continental Europe). In authoritarian states, private policing is more politically sensitive than in democratic states, sometimes resulting in more draconian restrictions on it. In developing societies, despite widespread fear of crime, potential consumers sometimes favour in-house measures over private security firms and electronic devices. In developed democracies, variation in private security growth reflects regulatory, institutional and ideological differences between the Anglosphere and continental Europe. We conclude that constraints on the private security industry’s growth potential are more significant than many scholars have acknowledged.

With the development of high voltage technology ,the inverter power is becoming higher and higher . The traditional two-level inverter capacity has been difficult to achieve high power requirements due to the limitation of the power electronic devices. Therefore, different new kinds of multilevel inverter topologies with high-performance are proposed by the scientist all over the world. This paper introduces the topology structure, characteristics and working principle of threelevel inverter, and makes a detailed description of space vector pulse width modulation principle. Finally, the simulation waveforms are presented with Matlab/Simulink, the results verifies the validity of the theoretical analysis.
