The Internet is widely recognized as an important information and communication medium. It has also become a useful tool for children’s education, but since the Internet is an open environment, it contains much information unsuitable for the under aged. This article introduces several content-filtering methods that can assist parents and educators in protecting children from harmful material. However, it must be noted that these are of limited value unless they are supported by sex education and parental monitoring of children’s Internet use.

Media use plays an important role in the social, emotional, and cognitive development of young individuals and accounts for a large portion of their time. For this reason it is important to understand the variables that contribute to improve the use of the Internet as a source of information and knowledge in formal and informal contexts. How is it possible to exploit the huge potential of this tool to help people learn? What are the cognitive and social characteristics that help individuals experience the Internet without being overwhelmed by its negative effects? What skills are needed to select and manage information and communication? What type of Internet use creates new relationships and ways of learning? A sample of 191 subjects was examined to determine certain characteristic differences between subjects with high and low levels of Internet use. The results show that individuals with high levels of Internet use have higher extroversion and openness scores. The research analyses the use of the Internet in informal contexts to determine the benefits that may result from Internet use in education which may include the development of the skill set necessary to evaluate information critically and analytically and build independent attitudes.

In Canada, as in many countries, teachers are being encouraged to integrate information and communication technologies (ICT) such as the Internet into the curriculum. A study conducted in Canada in 1999-2002 examined Internet use in schools through interviews with technology leaders, through surveys of teachers and principals, and through case study investigations of three school districts, each in a different province of Canada. The case study data from the three districts was analyzed, using the NVivo software program, to address three main questions: (1) To what extent was teachers' use of the Internet consistent with “best practice,” as described by Moersch (1999)? (2) What types of support systems appeared to be essential for effective Internet use in classrooms to occur? (3) What was the role of the teacher-librarian in contributing to effective Internet use in classrooms? The study showed that teachers were integrating the Internet into their teaching, but had not yet achieved “best practice,” and that teacher-librarians were influential in supporting teachers’ progress towards “best practice” in the use of the Internet in instruction.

The internet has transformed the way youth communicate, learn, and network, with implications for their broader social, psychological, and physical health and well-being. With the technological capability of accessing the internet from anywhere, at any time, paired with the enormous variety of internet activities in which youth engage—from social networking to chatting to streaming videos to playing games to watching television content—instances of problematic internet behavior have emerged. We conducted an online national survey of 629 US adolescents ages 12–17 years old and a matching survey of one of their parents. We investigated the relationship between problematic internet behavior and parental monitoring, parental mediation of internet use, and parental estimates of their adolescent’s time spent using computers. Analyses showed that problematic internet use was associated with less parental monitoring and parental mediation and poorer parental relationships. Adolescents that spent a lot of time on the computer were also more likely to engage in problematic internet use. Although we cannot determine the direction of the relationships, results support the important role of parents in adolescents’ problematic internet use.

The main aim of this study is to evaluate the Internet Use Disorder Scale administered to the sample of Internet users in Serbia, as well as to confirm its factorial structure and correlate it with some parameters of Internet use. The total sample included 280 participants, divided into the clinical (70) and control group (210), age (M=26.73, SD=7.830). The control group was randomly formed out of the total number of the participants (327) who voluntarily responded to the test battery and fulfilled the entry criteria. The clinical group comprised the subjects who had sought professional help due to the symptoms of dysfunctional Internet use in some of the institutions or private psychiatric and psycho-therapeutic practices in Serbia, all of whom met the classification criteria of Internet use disorder. The internal consistency of the scale is ?=.944, and through factor analysis three factors were extracted, together explaining 67.23% of the total variance: Inability to control behaviour and the consequences, Internet preoccupation and responses to deprivation, Social consequences of Internet use disorder. A statistically significant difference between the total scores of the clinical and control group on the scale was reported (t(278)=20.434; p<.000), and all individual items showed significant discriminative values with 89.6% of the participants regularly classified into appropriate categories. In addition, a significant positive correlation between the PUI score and the amount of hours spent online was found (r=.524; p<.001), however the analysis did not show any correlation with the work experience and age variables, nor significant differences by the sex, education and place of residence criterion in the clinical group. These results are similar to the ones with the control group accept for a low correlation between the PUI score and age (r=-0.253; p=.001).

Background: Previous studies have shown that suicide-related Internet use can have both negative and positive psychological effects. Aims: This study examined the effect of suicide-related Internet use on users’ suicidal ideation, depression/anxiety tendency, and loneliness. Method: A two-wave panel study of 850 Internet users was conducted via the Internet. Results: Suicide-related Internet use (e.g., browsing websites about suicide methods) had negative effects on suicidal ideation and depression/anxiety tendency. No forms of suicide-related Internet use, even those that would generally be considered positive, were found to decrease users’ suicidal ideation. In addition, our results suggest that the greater the suicidal ideation and feelings of depression and loneliness of Internet users, the more they used the Internet. Conclusion: Since suicide-related Internet use can adversely influence the mental health of young adults, it is necessary to take measures to reduce their exposure to such information.
