This case study examined the effectiveness and significance of the Internet and interactive video broadcasting as instructional and communication media in a global virtual learning system. The study explored how differences in students’ technology experiences, curriculum, cultures, and access to technology influence learning and student attitude in a technology-based distance education environment. The research also investigated whether the use of online references and materials is adequate and appropriate for successful distance learning. The setting was a virtual campus that linked universities in the U.S., Australia, and Canada with learning centers in different African countries. E-mail and face-toface interviews, observations, and Web-based surveys were utilized to collect the data. The study reveals that students had mixed perceptions about the effectiveness of technology, with positive attitudes exhibited towards interactive video and some anxiety and dissatisfaction with the use of the Internet.

Abstrak: Teknologi modern semakin pesat perkembangannya, sebagai masyarakat kita dapat merasakan hal positif dari perkembangan teknologi modern, salah satunya adalah internet. Memanfaatkan internet dengan hal positif dapat mempermudah kegiatan masyarakat, seperti dalam bidang pendidikan salah satunya adalah kegiatan belajar mengajar. Dengan adanya kegiatan belajar mengajar dapat menambah wawasan dan ilmu pengetahuan bagi masyarakat, akan tetapi terkadang pelajar bahkan pengajar yang melaksanakan kegiatan belajar mengajar tersebut terlalu terkekang oleh waktu dan peraturan yang berlaku pada tempat belajarnya. Hasil permasalahan yang penulis dapatkan pada kegiatan belajar mengajar konvensional adalah diharuskannya meluangkan waktu untuk pergi ke tempat belajar dan juga ditentukan durasi belajar mengajarnya bahkan diadakan peraturan yang terkadang membuat peserta sampai pengajar tidak nyaman dengan peraturan tersebut. Oleh karena itu penulis tertarik untuk menyelesaikan permasalahan tersebut dengan membuat sistem informasi pembelajaran (e-learning) dengan metode learner-led learning berbasis web yang dapat diakses dimanapun dan kapanpun tanpa mengeluarkan biaya dan tidak terkekang oleh waktu. Penelitian ini diharapkan dapat membantu dalam proses belajar mengajar dengan nyaman. Website ini juga menyediakan fasilitas seperti materi yang bersifat video dan artikel yang bertujuan bagi pelajar yang lebih nyaman belajar dengan video interaktif dan juga tersedia fasilitas sertifikat sebagai bukti bahwa pelajar telah berhasil dalam menyelesaikan soal dari materi yang dipelajarinya.   Kata kunci: pelajar, pembelajaran daring, pengajar, sistem pembelajaran, website   Abstract: Modern technology is growing rapidly, as a society we can feel positive things from the development of modern technology, one of which is the internet. Using the internet with positive things can facilitate community activities, such as in the field of education, one of which is teaching and learning activities. With teaching and learning activities, it can add insight and knowledge to the community, but sometimes students and even teachers who carry out teaching and learning activities are too constrained by time and the regulations that apply to the place of study. The results of the problems that the authors get in conventional teaching and learning activities are that they are required to take the time to go to the place of study and also determine the duration of teaching and learning and even make regulations that sometimes make participants until the teacher is not comfortable with these rules. Therefore, the authors are interested in solving these problems by creating a learning information system (e-learning) with a web-based learner-led learning method that can be accessed anywhere and anytime without incurring costs and not being constrained by time. This research is expected to help in the teaching and learning process comfortably. This website also provides facilities such as video materials and articles aimed at making students more comfortable learning with interactive videos and certificate facilities are also available as evidence that students have succeeded in solving problems from the material they have studied.   Keywords: e-learning, learning system, student; teacher, website

In Vietnam, despite the widespread use of computers and the Internet in the educational settings, little attention has been paid to the role of the Internet in promoting students’ autonomy. Particularly, in the author’s real teaching context at Thuong Mai University (TMU), there exists a serious problem relating to students’ lack of independency in language learning. The study, therefore, was implemented to investigate the effectiveness of the Internet use in promoting business learners’ autonomy and improving their learning skill. To fulfill the study, questionnaires and interviews were conducted to 200 third-year students and 10 teachers of English at TMU respectively. The qualitative approach was adopted to reveal the significant findings of the descriptive case study on the learners’ positive attitudes and awareness of their learning autonomy through the popularity yet ineffective use of the Internet use but the ineffective use of the Internet in improving English study and motivation, what and how teachers and learners do to promote learners’ autonomy in language learning. The study, consequently, came up with some effective pedagogical implications that may help teachers recognize the significant role of the Internet in enhancing learners’ autonomy inside and outside the class.

IntroductionMost sub-Saharan African countries endure a high burden of communicable infections but also face a rise of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Interventions targeting particular epidemics are often executed within vertical programmes. We establish an Adaptive Diseases control Expert Programme in Tanzania (ADEPT) model with three domains; stepwise training approach, integration of communicable and NCDs and a learning system. The model aims to shift traditional vertical programmes to an adaptive diseases management approach through integrating communicable and NCDs using the tuberculosis (TB) and diabetes mellitus (DM) dual epidemic as a case study. We aim to describe the ADEPT protocol with underpinned implementation and operational research on TB/DM.Methods and analysisThe model implement a collaborative TB and DM services protocol as endorsed by WHO in Tanzania. Evaluation of the process and outcomes will follow the logic framework. A mixed research design with both qualitative and quantitative approaches will be used in applied research action. Anticipated implementation research outcomes include at the health facilities level for organising TB/DM services, pathways of patients with TB/DM seeking care in different health facilities, factors in service delivery that need deimplementation and the ADEPT model implementation feasibility, acceptability and fidelity. Expected operational research outcomes include additional identified patients with dual TB/DM, the prevalence of comorbidities like hypertension in patients with TB/DM and final treatment outcomes of TB/DM including treatment-related complications. Findings will inform the future policies and practices for integrating communicable and NCDs services.Ethics and disseminationEthical approval was granted by The National Research Health Ethical Committee (Ref-No. NIMR/HQ/R.8a/Vol.IX/2988) and the implementation endorsed by the government authorities. Findings will be proactively disseminated through multiple mechanisms including peer-reviewed journals, and engagement with various stakeholders’ example in conferences and social media.

Everywhere in the media, people talk about the so-called “Twitter and Facebook revolution” in regard to the Green Revolution in Iran or other new social movements which demand democratization in their countries and use the Internet for communication and mobilization. Libertarian advocates of the Internet state that the Internet has democratizing effects because of its reputed egalitarian, open and free technological structure for communication processes. Especially in countries in which the media is under strict control by the government, these characteristics are emphasized as stimulation for political liberalization and democratization processes. This essay critically examines the alleged democratizing effect of the use of the Internet on the Malaysian society exemplified on the social movement Bersih. The Bersih movement demands free and fair elections in Malaysia, often described as an ethnocratic and “electoral authoritarian regime”. 141 The objective of this study is to demonstrate the dependency of such possible effects on context.

This chapter presents a framework through which ethical Internet-based organizational research can be conducted. Organizational constraints that promote the use of the Internet for applied research are identified, followed by potential benefits and drawbacks. The chapter then discusses the ethical issues that must be considered when conducting Internet-based organizational research; these include concerns about privacy, confidentiality, anonymity, informed consent and providing a debriefing. A case study illustrates these issues, and the chapter concludes with directions for future research. Numerous tables and figures are used to serve as a quick reference for the key points of the chapter.

Businesses and governments continue to expand the use of the internet to access and provide a wide range services to consumers. This change in service delivery presents a potential access barrier for people who do not have access to the internet available in their homes. Publicly available computers attempt to bridge this gap; however, it is not clear if people are willing to use computers in these environments to engage in the full range of web-based activities, particularly online transactions. We expand Triandis’ modified TRA model to consider user characteristics and the impact of the physical and virtual environment on public transactional use of websites. Results indicate that people are sensitive to the physical environment surrounding the computer and that Internet self-efficacy supports public transactional use while individual need for privacy deters transactional use in a public environment. In addition, people without personal internet access do complete transactions at other non-public locations and that completing transactions from non-public locations is a strong determinant of public transactional use.
