Purpose The purpose of this study is to understand the impact of a collaborative workshop, aimed to support teacher educators in embedding a “global outlook” in the curriculum on their perceived professional development. Design/methodology/approach The workshop included working sessions, during a period of 13 months, and was structured as participatory action research, according to which volunteer academics designed, developed and evaluated global education projects in their course units. Data were gathered through a focus group session, conducted with the teacher educators at a final stage of the workshop, and analyzed according to the principles of thematic analysis. Findings Results of the analysis suggest that the workshop presented a meaningful opportunity for teacher educators to reconstruct their knowledge and teaching practice to (re)discover the importance of collaborative work and to assume new commitments to themselves and to others. Originality/value The study addresses a gap in the existing literature on academic staff development in internationalization of the curriculum, focusing on the perceptions of teacher educators’, whose voices have been largely silent in research in the field. The study concludes with a set of recommendations for a professional development program in internationalization of the curriculum.

ABSTRACTThis paper aims to characterize current public policies and educational practice perspectives, which principles are based on the logic of global education economy, aiming to reflect on possible impacts on processes of teaching and learning within the local educational contexts. This model reflects the neoliberal political influence and economic logic, which features a context governed by the laws of the market and the democratic Social Welfare State mischaracterization; that is, state reduction and “market and quasi-market” enhancement. Example of this is what is happening in Brazil with the expansion of educational services and outsourced products. This idea has been applied by Basic Education responsibility decentralization for the municipalities. Thus, the budget for the services, products and continuing education is being transferred to specialized national and multinational enterprises, often under the label of nonprofits entities (new philanthropies, associated companies, that is, the third sector). Therefore, the Brazilian education has been suffering state denationalization impact, which is causing profound changes in how educational public policies are being practiced within each Brazilian municipality.

The social changes are the result of societal challenges and are related to profound, sustainable, and non-linear actions and their result on the environment, society, and the individual. The impact of societal changes on human and social behavior is not unequivocal, and its understanding depends on the research methodology. For this paper is applied the phenomenological description - a method that refers to the experience lived in the immediate existential from the perspective of the essence of phenomena. The research data is the result of applying an online questionnaire developed with Google Form on a sample of 158 respondents. The results obtained allow us to describe the impact of societal changes on human and social behavior through the specifics of the phenomenon of “global education”: the diversification of the forms of organization of the educational process; interactive discourse - effective teaching method; prioritization of action methods; the use of audio / video sequences in the teacher’s message; the issue of computerized evaluation; the theme of continuing education courses and the importance of the interactive portal for in-service teachers.

The work described in this paper addresses the development of a game focused on a teaching strategy based on an action-research study. The strategy established aims to test the impact of the student’s participation in a collaborative project. The project aimed to motivate students to use and learn foreign languages and also to develop their intercultural communicative competence.  The team consisted of 14 teachers from 11 different countries and 167 students in an international educational context. Regarding the Portuguese participation, we have introduced the Area of Study namely Discovery in a class from the 7th grade students (23 students). All the work was based in three premises: use Scratch online, web 2.0 and ETwinning platform. Students from different countries have worked together to develop their own games using programming Scratch. During the project, partners collaborated using web 2.0 tools and at the end, they have share their games and get feedback. This work identified the benefits and challenges of global education and intercultural interaction among students. Fourteen schools from 11 European countries have   participated in this eTwinning project. Six schools had won the European quality eTwinning label. The methodology applied in this learning environment motivated the students and improved their learning process. It also contributed to a higher level of concentration and promoted collaborative learning. Additionally, it facilitates creativity, dialogue and the overall relationship among students. The results demonstrate that teachers perceive eTwinning as contributing towards the enhancement and development of global education through intercultural interaction. The pedagogic model based on the collaborative construction of knowledge was easily understood by the teachers.

Social-emotional education and the relational competence of school staff and leaders are emphasized in research since they strongly impact childrens’ social, emotional, and cognitive development. In a longitudinal project—Empathie macht Schule (EmS)—we aim at evaluating the outcome and process of an empathy training for the whole school staff, including leaders. We compare three treatments to three control elementary schools via a mixed-methods approach employing qualitative and quantitative research methods targeting both, the school staff and the schoolchildren. Since the start of the project in 2019, the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the global education process, that is, the range of training activities for school staff in an unprecedented manner. First the lockdown and then the hygienic measures impact the habits and certainties in schools on multiple levels, including artifacts (e.g., physical distancing measures and virtual platforms), processes (e.g., virtual learning and home-schooling), social structures (e.g., separation of a high-risk group), and values (e.g., difficulties in building relations and showing empathy due to physical distance). Leaders and staff are facing an uncertain situation, while their actions and decisions may—also unintentionally—shape the social reality that will be inhabited to a significant extent. In this context, a number of questions become salient. How does the disruption of the pandemic affect interpersonal relationships, interactions, and the social field—the sum of relationships within the system of a school—as a whole? And specifically, how do the actors reflect on changes in the social field, their relationships, and the schools’ and classrooms’ overall relationship quality due to the crisis? The assessment combines qualitative interviews with leaders and teachers (N = 10) along with a self-report survey (N = 80) addressing the effects of the pandemic on interpersonal aspects in schools. Surprisingly, a number of positive effects were mentioned regarding the learning environment in the smaller-sized classes, which were caused by hygienic measures, as well as increased cohesion among faculty. The potential influence of these effects by consciously shaping relationships and cultivating empathy is discussed in the article.
