In England, entrance to universities is by nation-wide competition which means English universities have an exceptional influence on schools--a striking theme of the book. This important book first investigates the university as an institution and then tracks the individual on their journey to and through university. In A University Education, David Willetts presents a compelling case for the ongoing importance of the university, both as one of the great institutions of modern society and as a transformational experience for the individual. The book also makes illuminating comparisons with higher education in other countries, especially the US and Germany. Drawing on his experience as UK Minister for Universities and Science from 2010 to 2014, the author offers a powerful account of the value of higher education and the case for more expansion. He covers controversial issues in which he was involved from access for disadvantaged students to the introduction of L9,000 fees. The final section addresses some of the big questions for the future, such as the the relationship between universities and business, especially in promoting innovation.. The subject of this research is modern celebratory culture in the context of impact of globalization processes upon festivities. The author explores a new phenomenon that emerged in the early XXI century – a “global holiday” within the framework of sociocultural transformations related to transition of humanity towards the Digital Age, and formation of the global information space. Special attention is given to the following aspects: creation of media and post-mythological global holidays of the Digital Age, and transformation of the traditional holiday into new metanational forms. The methodological foundation for studying the holidays that received the status of "global" in modern culture became the adaptation of “head page method” applied in sociological, cultural and futurological research and sociocultural monitoring, including overt observation. The conclusion is made that modern culture marks the formation of several types of global holidays that carry metanational character: the first group includes media-produced holidays associated with post-folklore and post-mythology of modern society, or represent celebratory events as award ceremonies in the field of politics, art and science; the second group includes ethnic traditional holidays that received the global status (Halloween, St. Patrick's Day, Mexican Day of the Dead, Holi “Festival of Spring”, etc.). The phenomenon of global holidays should be taken into account in creation of the national strategies of cultural policy, and the global holiday itself may become one of the "soft power" tools in the Digital Age.

Learning by doing is thought to be one of the most effective ways to learn (Lombardi, 2007). This article explores the findings of a small scale study on one module about whether pass rates and student satisfaction can be improved by introducing authentic learning methods into the classroom by changing the teaching and assessment methods used on a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) module (Accounting and Finance for Decision Making). The pass rates pre and post the changes were monitored and also the student satisfaction scores. Comparisons were made between the results three semesters prior and three semesters post the changes, reviewing quantitative and qualitative data from 180 students. Leeds Beckett University has undertaken reviews of its undergraduate and postgraduate curricula and one of the key messages underlying university education at the Business School is that it needs to enhance employability. Therefore the consideration of using ‘authentic learning’ methods wherever appropriate would appear to fit in well with this strategy. The findings suggest that the introduction of authentic learning techniques make student learning from this sample more effective in terms of better pass rates and also that the students enjoy the learning experience more. The findings therefore bode well for the further use of authentic learning techniques in future teaching and learning activities and also support current literature in this area. The module continues to use the changes introduced and has experienced much higher pass rates and student satisfaction as a result.

Modern processes among Chinese citizens in the field of studying history of their culture convincingly demonstrate an increasing consistent interest in such an important part of it as writing and calligraphy traditions. After detailed analysis of the fundamental documents that control returning calligraphy to the basic school curriculum, it is possible to point out a strong tendency in sustained government support for calligraphy-based courses both as compulsory or additional education. University education also includes calligraphy. Currently, the Government of China is carrying out an educational reform focusing on teaching calligraphy in primary and secondary education; well-qualified teachers are being trained for carrying out this reform. Also there is another arousing interest in teaching calligraphy skills for the aged, which accords with the general direction of social work with a “culture of age” represented by Chinese traditions. The population interest in calligraphy is supported by the cultural-educational activities of numerous calligraphic associations.The recent discussions on calligraphy training demonstrate that this type of activity is not inferior to the pressure of digital technologies, but on the contrary, demonstrate that it still remains as a mean of communication between people, is used by government as another mean for increasing cultural level of the population, for preserving and increasing national cultural heritage.The methodology of studying mentioned questions is based on a content analysis of Chinese media publications, as well as the fundamental documents that are provided for public access on official websites of the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China and on the university websites which implement and develop the latest strategy in calligraphy teacher training program. The main result of the study could be considered as clarifying the role of calligraphy in modern Chinese culture, where an intentional return to this method of mastering traditions is associated with the desire to incorporate the best of the previous achievements, and combine it with the desire to withstand the negative consequences of the changed living rhythm of modern society.

The article presents philosophical and critical exploration of education in the framework of intensive informatization of modern society. The use of digital technology is nowadays a key feature of educational practices in the world. Yet despite its prominence, digital technologies in education continue to be an issue that rarely receives sustained critical attention and thought. Tackling the wider picture, addressing philosophical, cultural, economic aspects of education in digital age, the study offers to make sense what happens and what doesn’t happen, when the digital and educational come together. Both positive and negative consequences of the spread of e-learning systems and technologies are analyzed. Examining contemporary education in terms of social justice, equality and meaningfulness the authors formulate the key tasks facing the philosophy of education in the modern digital era. The authors conclude that it is necessary to supplement electronic educational technologies with traditional educational practices. In particular they examine the trends and prospects of cognitive research and biotechnologies in the light of their influence on the human ideal that characterizes contemporary education. The authors argue that a serious and fruitful comprehension of education in the digital age requires a revision of the classic opposition of the subject and object, spirit and body, man and animal.

The globalization of educational space shows that university education should meet the needs of society based on the ethical principles of interaction between participants of educational process and use innovative teaching methods. Therefore the purpose of the study is to substantiate the importance of convergence of systems of education at Scottish and Ukrainian universities in order to provide ethical leadership in the field of education. A systematic approach to the realization of the purpose of the study allowed solving the main tasks: systematization of the strengths of Scottish education, justification of the impact of university social responsibility on providing ethical leadership in education, comparing the main indicators of the process of providing educational services in Scotland and Ukraine.As a result, it is established that the synergetic effect from the application of the concept of ethical leadership is achieved as a result of the interaction of all participants in the educational process, namely: the state (awareness and realization of the social mission to develop the potential of youth); universities (development of educational programs taking into account the needs of modern society and the use of teaching methods capable of forming the necessary competences for future specialists); students (interest in obtaining quality education).

The article deals with new principles and organizational forms of social work in the context of digital society development. The author attributes the necessity to implement changes in the sphere to a higher level of individualism in the modern society and young people’s urge to self-fulfillment and self-realization. The paper reviews most common existing forms of students’ public organizations: parliaments, councils, unions and clubs. The author highlights that nowadays they tend to perform the advisory function in education institutions, or their activity is limited to actually being social clubs for interest groups. Frequently, they are not designed to handle strategic tasks education institutions and students communities are facing. Following the guidelines the new Ukrainian Law on Higher Education puts forward, the author addresses the experience of Kharkiv University of Humanities “People’s Ukrainian Academy” in organizing pupils’ and students’ self-governance, and the practice of its public organizations. The author attempts to analyze how effective the current system is, whether its organizational principles and forms are up-to-date, to what extent they meet students’ needs and expectations. The author shares PUA’s experience in the work on training and educating youth leaders, explicates how naturally they make up constituent part of the university education and pedagogical system, how successfully they cooperate with other teachers’ and pupils’ public organizations of the complex of continuous education. A very special attention the article pays to the PUA pupils’ organization “ISTOK” and its activities. According to the author, the secret of public organizations’ successful performance lies in team work and cooperation, collective problem-solving, integration of experience and up-to-date approaches to social work.

Introduction. The article covers history waypoints of the corporate culture, tradition, emblems of Volgograd State University, its corporate ideology and the role of the University in the regional community. The author enlightens the activity and responsibility of the rector department and faculties in terms of the development of the University as region’s leader of science, education and culture. Methods and materials. The principles of historicism and objectivity were used as a methodological base of the research. The study is based on scientific papers on the role of university education in modern society and corporate cultural space in the university community. Analysis. The core activity and focused informational work of the University has allowed to form its positive image. Special attention is paid to the appearance of higher education institutions in the region and the establishment of Volgograd State University. The author studies the contribution of the University to the social-economic, public and cultural sphere of region’s life. Results. The main conclusion of the article is that nowadays classic university education leads to forming the social elite, increases the level of education and culture in the regional community. The program of transforming Volgograd State University into the University Centre of innovative, technological and social development of the region allows to reach success for not only the University, but for the whole region.
