Relationship of Plasticity Index of Soil with Laboratory and Field Electrical Resistivity Values

Borehole sampling and laboratory soil characterizations provide accurate engineering properties, yet it is time-consuming and expensive. Geo-electrical survey is an attractive tool for delineating subsurface properties without soil disturbance. The primary objective of the current research work is to investigate the relationship between electrical resistivity and plasticity index of soil. The results from electrical resistivity tests (field and laboratory) and Atterburg limit tests were analyzed to understand the relationship between electrical resistivity and plasticity index of soil. Plasticity index have a significant correlation with field and laboratory electrical resistivity values for all soil samples. It was found that silty sand soil samples are characterized by higher plasticity index and lower resistivity values whereas sandy soil samples have lower plasticity index and higher resistivity values.

Correlating engineering properties with index properties has assumed greater significance in the recent past in the field of geotechnical engineering. Although attempts have been made in the past to correlate compressibility with various index properties individually, all the properties affecting compressibility behaviour have not been considered together in any single study to examine which index property of the soil correlates best with compressibility behaviour, especially within a set of test results. In the present study, 10 soils covering a sufficiently wide range of liquid limit, plastic limit, and shrinkage limit were selected and conventional consolidation tests were carried out starting with their initial water contents almost equal to their respective liquid limits. The compressibility behaviour is vastly different for pairs of soils having nearly the same liquid limit, but different plasticity characteristics. The relationship between void ratio and consolidation pressure is more closely related to the shrinkage index (shrinkage index = liquid limit - shrinkage limit) than to the plasticity index. Wide variations are seen with the liquid limit. For the soils investigated, the compression index relates better with the shrinkage index than with the plasticity index or liquid limit.Key words: Atterberg limits, classification, clays, compressibility, laboratory tests.

During this time to get the value of California Bearing Ratio (CBR) planners will conduct field tests and/or laboratory tests. This takes time and is relatively large. For this reason, it is needed a practical matter or formulation about the relationship between soil parameters so that planners do not need to test the overall soil parameters. This study aims to obtain a graph or correlation of the Plasticity Index (PI) with California Bearing Ratio (CBR) for clay soils in the Palangka Raya region. Clay soil samples were taken at 3 (three) locations in the City of Palangka Raya. Based on the results of tests on several samples obtained the largest CBR value in soil samples from Tangkiling village which reached a value of 6.56%. While the lowest CBR value obtained from the village of Kereng Bengkirai is 3.14%. For the PI value, the biggest value obtained in Bukit Rawi village is the largest, namely 20.54% and the smallest PI value obtained in Tangkiling village is 9.01%. In general, it can be concluded that the CBR value of clay is inversely proportional to the value of PI. Wherein it is known that the greater the CBR value, the smaller the PI value and vice versa. The overall correlation results of the PI value (plasticity index) to the CBR (California Bearing Ratio) obtain the correlation results using the linear graph CBR = -0.28383 PI + 8,9843. While the correlation value based on analytical calculations obtained CBR = -0,3006X + 9,0190. This test shows that the correlation value has a very high relationship when viewed from the benchmark correlation results (R = 0.80-1.00). The results of the correlation value using linear regression graphs worth R = 0.8489 and using analytical correlation methods worth R = 0.9283. So the final result of this study is to look for a relationship between PI values ??and CBR values. Then for the value of R is taken the smallest value that is R = 0.8489.

Precise determination of engineering properties of soil is essential for proper design and successful construction of any structure. The conventional methods for determination of engineering properties are invasive, costly and time-consuming. Electrical resistivity survey is an attractive tool for delineating subsurface properties without soil disturbance. Reliable correlations between electrical resistivity and other soil properties will enable us to characterize the subsurface soil without borehole sampling. This paper presents the preliminary results of an ongoing research on correlations of electrical resistivity with strength properties of soil. Soil investigations, field electrical resistivity survey (VES) and laboratory electrical resistivity measurements were conducted. From the data analysis, significant correlations have been obtained between resistivity and moisture content and angle of internal friction. Weaker correlations have been observed for cohesion and unit weight of soil.

Soil fertility determines a plant's development process that guarantees food sufficiency and the security of lives and properties through bumper harvests. The fertility of soil varies according to regions, thereby determining the type of crops to be planted. However, there is no repository or any source of information about the fertility of the soil in any region in Nigeria especially the Northwest of the country. The only available information is soil samples with their attributes which gives little or no information to the average farmer. This has affected crop yield in all the regions, more particularly the Northwest region, thus resulting in lower food production.  Therefore, this study is aimed at classifying soil data based on their fertility in the Northwest region of Nigeria using R programming. Data were obtained from the department of soil science from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. The data contain 400 soil samples containing 13 attributes. The relationship between soil attributes was observed based on the data. K-means clustering algorithm was employed in analyzing soil fertility clusters. Four clusters were identified with cluster 1 having the highest fertility, followed by 2 and the fertility decreases with an increasing number of clusters. The identification of the most fertile clusters will guide farmers on where best to concentrate on when planting their crops in order to improve productivity and crop yield.

A number of clinical studies have revealed that there is an association between major depression (MD) and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Both the diseases are shown to affect a large proportion of the global population. More advanced studies for understanding the comorbidity mechanism of these two diseases can shed light on developing new therapies of both diseases. To the best of our knowledge, there has not been any research work in the literature investigating the relationship between MD and GERD using their miRNA biomarkers. We adopt a phylogenetic analysis to analyze their miRNA biomarkers. From our analyzed results, the association between these two diseases can be explored through miRNA phylogeny. In addition to evidence from the phylogenetic analysis, we also demonstrate epidemiological evidence for the relationship between MD and GERD based on Taiwan biobank data.

AbstractRock aggregates constitute the enormous volume of inert construction material used around the globe. The petrologic description as igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic types establishes the intrinsic formation pattern of the parent rock. The engineering properties of these rocks vary due to the differences in the transformation process (e.g. hydrothermal deposits) and weathering effect. The two most common mechanical tests used to investigate the performance of aggregates are the Los Angeles (LA) and micro-Deval (MD) tests. This study reviewed the geological parameters (including mineralogy, grain and crystal size, grain shape, and porosity) and the relationship to Los Angeles and micro-Deval tests. It was found that high content of primary minerals in rocks (e.g. quartz and feldspar) is a significant parameter for performance evaluation. Traces of secondary and accessory minerals also affect the performance of rocks, although in many cases it is based on the percentage. Furthermore, some studies showed that the effect of mineralogic composition on mechanical strength is not sufficient to draw final conclusions of mechanical performance; therefore, the impact of other textural characteristics should be considered. The disposition of grain size and crystal size (e.g. as result of lithification) showed that rocks composed of fine-grain textural composition of ≤ 1 mm enhanced fragmentation and wear resistance than medium and coarse grained (≥ 1 mm). The effect of grain shape was based on convex and concave shapes and flat and elongated apexes of tested samples. The equidimensional form descriptor of rocks somehow improved resistance to impact from LA than highly flat and elongated particles. Lastly, the distribution of pore space investigated by means of the saturation method mostly showed moderate (R = 0.50) to strong (R = 0.90) and positive correlations to LA and MD tests.

University students consume live music; however, almost 40% declare that they have never attended a flamenco show, an intangible heritage of humankind. Numerous studies have shown that cultural capital and socioeconomic profile, among other factors, are variables that influence cultural consumption, and therefore, cultural sustainability. Considering the relationship between several variables, this paper pursues a double objective. On the one hand, identifying the factors that influence attendance at flamenco shows, and on the other, proposing a predictive model that quantifies the likelihood of an individual attending a flamenco show. To this end, we analyse flamenco consumption by means of a survey conducted on 452 university students, using Multilayer Perceptrom (a non-parametric model), a methodology based on an artificial neural network. Our results confirm the importance of cultural capital, as well as personal and external factors, among other. The findings of this research work are of potential interest for management and planning of cultural events, as well as to promote cultural sustainability.

Abstract Background Cardiac surgery is known to induce acute endothelial dysfunction, which may be central to the pathophysiology of postoperative complications. Preoperative endothelial dysfunction could also be implicated in the pathophysiology of postoperative complications after cardiac surgery. However, the relationship between preoperative endothelial function and postoperative outcomes remains unknown. The primary objective was to describe the relationship between a preoperative microcirculatory dysfunction identified by iontophoresis of acetylcholine (ACh), and postoperative organ injury in patients scheduled for cardiac surgery using cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Methods Sixty patients undergoing elective cardiac surgery using CPB were included in the analysis of a prospective, observational, single-center cohort study conducted from January to April 2019. Preoperative microcirculation was assessed with reactivity tests on the forearm (iontophoresis of ACh and nitroprusside). Skin blood flow was measured by laser speckle contrast imaging. Postoperative organ injury, the primary outcome, was defined as a Sequential Organ Failure Assessment score (SOFA) 48 h after surgery greater than 3. Results Organ injury at 48 h occurred in 29 cases (48.3%). Patients with postoperative organ injury (SOFA score > 3 at 48 h) had a longer time to reach the peak of preoperative iontophoresis of acetylcholine (133 s [104–156] vs 98 s [76–139] than patients without, P = 0.016), whereas endothelium-independent vasodilation to nitroprusside was similar in both groups. Beyond the proposed threshold of 105 s for time to reach the peak of preoperative endothelium-dependent vasodilation, three times more patients presented organ dysfunction at 48 h (76% vs 24% below or equal 105 s). In multivariable model, the time to reach the peak during iontophoresis of acetylcholine was an independent predictor of postoperative organ injury (odds ratio = 4.81, 95% confidence interval [1.16–19.94]; P = 0.030). Conclusions Patients who postoperatively developed organ injury (SOFA score > 3 at 48 h) had preoperatively a longer time to reach the peak of endothelium-dependent vasodilation. The objective of the present empirical piece of research work is to examine the moderation effect of gender on the relationship between occupational aspiration and career maturity. Following the stratified random sampling technique 1000 students were drawn from different schools at Durg city, to serve as participants in the present research work. Career maturity was measured by Career Maturity Inventory (Gupta, 1989). Occupational aspiration was measured by Grewal (1975). Moderation effect was worked out through hierarchical multiple regression analysis. Result of the study indicated that, gender was significant moderator on the relationship between occupational aspiration and career maturity. It is concluded that there is sufficient empirical and statistical evidence of the moderation effect of gender on the relationship between relationship between occupational aspiration and career maturity.
