In an attempt to reduce the use of a formaldehyde-based adhesive that is dangerous for both human health and environment, several studies had been done to develop particleboard with natural bio-based adhesives. Between those bio-based adhesives that have been investigated, the combination of citric acid-starch was potential to be developed further as an adhesive to particleboard. In this research, the effect of starch addition and press temperature on the properties of bamboo particleboard were evaluated. This research uses a combination of citric acid/starch with the composition weight ratio of 100/0, 90/10, 80/20 and 70/30 and press temperature of 160, 180 and 200 °C. The manufacture of particleboard also used a three-step press cycle method which has not been done before in Petung bamboo particleboard production. The result showed that the three-press cycle method used in this research was able to produce a board with excellent properties than board produced by single-step press cycle method. This showed that the manufacture of the board in this research was more efficient to produce citric acid-starch bonded particleboard than previous method being used. The results also showed that both the addition of starch and the increase of press temperature especially improved bamboo particleboard mechanical properties. The board with the optimum properties resulted from particleboard with citric acid/starch adhesive with the composition weight ratio of 80/20 and press temperature of 180 °C which could meet JIS A 5908 (2003) type 18 requirement.

The objective of this research was to develop ecological adhesives for bonding plywood panels using lignosulfonates, a common waste product of the wood pulp industry, and natural tannin extracted from Moroccan bark of Acacia mollissima using different process. Natural tannin and lignin were used in wood adhesives formulation to substitute resins based on phenol and formaldehyde. To achieve this, the lignosulfonates were glyoxalated to enhance their reactivity and the used tannins obtained by three different extraction methods were compared with commercial mimosa tannin. The proportion of Acacia mollissima tannins and lignosulfonates, the pressing time, the pressing temperature, and the pressure used were studied to improve mechanical properties, and bonding quality of plywood panel. The properties of plywood panels produced with these adhesives were tested in accordance with normative tests. Thus, the tensile strength, and the shear strength were measured. The results showed that the performance of the plywood panels made using biobased tannin adhesives was influenced by physical conditions such as pressure, press temperature as well as by chemical conditions, such as the tannin-lignin ratio. It exhibited excellent mechanical properties comparable to commercially available phenol-formaldehyde plywood adhesives. This study showed that biobased adhesives formulations presented good and higher mechanical performance and no formaldehyde emission.

Design and fabrication of nanofibrous scaffolds should mimic the native extracellular matrix. This study is aimed at investigating electrospinning of polycaprolactone (PCL) blended with chitosan-gelatin complex. The morphologies were observed from scanning electron microscope. As-spun blended mats had thinner fibers than pure PCL. X-ray diffraction was used to analyze the degree of crystallinity. The intensity at two peaks at 2θof 21° and 23.5° gradually decreased with the percentage of chitosan-gelatin complex increasing. Moreover, incorporation of the complex could obviously improve the hydrophilicity of as-spun blended mats. Mechanical properties of as-spun nanofibrous mats were also tested. The elongation at break of fibrous mats increased with the PCL content increasing and the ultimate tensile strength varied with different weight ratios. The as-spun mats had higher tensile strength when the weight ratio of PCL to CS-Gel was 75/25 compared to pure PCL. Both as-spun PCL scaffolds and PCL/CS-Gel scaffolds supported the proliferation of porcine iliac endothelial cells, and PCL/CS-Gel had better cell viability than pure PCL. Therefore, electrospun PCL/Chitosan-gelatin nanofibrous mats with weight ratio of 75/25 have better hydrophilicity mechanical properties, and cell proliferation and thus would be a promising candidate for tissue engineering scaffolds.

ABSTRACTA homogeneous mixture of Y2O3, CeO2 and MgO with a final weight ratio of 3:1: 2 was prepared by the alkoxide method. The powder mixture was then added into Si3N4 powder in amounts ranging from 4 to 12 wt%, andconsolidated by hot-pressing. Microstructure and mechanical properties of the sintered bodies were determined and compared to those of materials prepared by the conventional route of mixing the oxide powders as sintering aids individually in essentially same composition. The β-fraction (modification ratio) in same composition was higher in thesintered bodies made through the alkoxide method than those made through the conventional one. The room temperature flexural strength was maximized with 6wt% addition of the alkoxide derived oxide, whereas, 12wt% addition of the total oxide was required to maximize the strength by conventional processing.

Purpose This paper aims to investigate the vital characteristic of an innovative ceramic injection molding (CIM) process for orthopedic application with controlled porosity and improved tribological and mechanical properties which were affected by complex tribological interactions, whether lubricated like hip implants and other artificial prostheses. The main objective is to maximize the usage of palm stearin as a single based binder as the function of flow properties during injection molding process. Design/methodology/approach The binder used in this present study consists of 100 per cent palm stearin manufactured by Kempas Oil Sdn Bhd and supplied by Vistec Technology Sdn Bhd. The feedstock was prepared by using a Z-blade mixer (Thermo Haake Rheomix OS) and Brabender mixer model R2400. The feedstock prepared was injection molded using a manually operated vertical benchtop machine with an average pressure of about 5-7 bars. The firing step included the temporary holds at intermediate temperatures to burn out organic binders. At this stage, the green molded specimen was de-bound using a single-step wick-debinding method. Findings The maximum content of ceramic material is applied to investigate the efficiencies of net formulation that can be achieved by ceramic materials. The longer the viscosity will change with shear rate, the higher the value of n obtained instead. From the slope of the curves obtained in Figure 3, the value of n for the feedstock was determined to be less than 1, which indicates a pseudoplastic behavior and suitability for the molding process. Moreover, high shear sensitivity is important in producing complex and intrinsic specimens which are leading products in the CIM industry. Originality/value The feedstock containing HAp powder and palm stearin binder was successfully prepared at very low temperature of 70°C, which promoting a required pseudo-plastic behavior during rheological test. The single binder palm stearin should be optimized in other research works carried out, as palm stearin is most preferred compared to other polymeric materials that provided high energy consumption when subjected to the sintering process. Besides the binder is widely available in Malaysia, low cost and harmless effect during debinding process.

There are several types of wound dressing that have been developed, one of them is hydrogel. Hydrogel is sheet-shaped wound dressings which have the ability to absorb exudate and have good stability acidic pH that can be used for the treatment of burns. In this study, hydrogel were made using natural polymers such as pectin and gelatin. The two polymers were combined using crosslinking method with the addition of citric acid as a crosslinking agent. The addition of citric acid has affect on the characteristics of the hydrogel material produced, therefore the right amount is needed to obtain a hydrogel with good mechanical properties. Hydrogel also added by an active substance in the form of flavonoids from dragon fruit peel extract that can be used as a wound dressing to cure burns. This study resulting hydrogel with a concentration of 4% citric acid (Hydrogel CA 4%) produced highest value of swelling, tensile strength, and elongation are 890%, 0.05 Mpa, and 200%, repectively. The mechanical properties of Hydrogel CA 4% was proved by FTIR test that had been carried out, namely the presence of C=O carbonyl group as a result of the esterification reaction that occurred between the polymers and citric acid in the absorption area of 1733.9 cm-1.

In this article obtaining complex nitrogen-phosphate fertilizers based on activation of phosphorite powder with partially ammoniated mix of phosphoric and sulphuric acids have been studied. In order to reduce the foaming of the process, for the first time a partially ammoniated mix of acids was used. The optimal technological parameters for activation phosphorite powder with partially neutralized mixes of sulphuric and phosphoric acids are the followings: the mix of sulphuric and phosphoric acids with a ratio of SО3:Р2О5 = 1.2; рН of acids – 2.5; weight ratio of ammonium sulphate-phosphate slurry towards phosphorite powder is 100 : 20; temperature is 60°С; duration is 30 min.  The composition nitrogen-phosphate fertilizers obtained in optimal condition contains (wt., %): N – 11.55; Р2О5total -24.61; Р2О5acceptable by citric acid -21.66; Р2О5 acceptable by EDTA -20.24; Р2О5water-soluble  -13.02; CaOtotal -13.59; СаОacceptable by citric acid -11.43. In that condition, granulated products of nitrogen-phosphate can be produced with high strength. The advantage of offered promising technology concludes in reduction two times expenditure of the most expensive ammonia in comparison with ammonium sulphate production and an increase in gross domestic product.

AbstractThe creep test is one of the important approaches to determining some mechanical properties of composite materials. This study was carried out to investigate the creep behaviour of an epoxy composite material that was reinforced with Y2O3 powder at weight ratios of 2%, 7%, 12%, 17% and 22%. Each volume ratio was subjected to five loads over the range of 1N to5N at a constant temperature of 16 ± 2°C. In this work, creep behaviour, stress and elasticity modulus were studied through experimental and numerical analyses. Results showed that increasing the weight ratio of Y2O3 powder enhanced creep characteristics.

Traditional lead brass is gradually prevented from application by many countries’ governments because lead does harm to human health and pollutes the environment. New types of environment-friendly lead-free brass with favorable machinability are urgently demanded in the electrical, electronics and plumping fields. Lead-free Mg-Sb brass was fabricated in present. Experimental results showed that when the content of Mg is 1.0wt%, Sb is 0.8wt% and Cu is 58.0~59.0wt%, the alloy’s mechanical properties and machinability are favorable for industry application. With the increase of the content of Sb, the machinability increased, while the mechanical properties decreased. Lots of Cu2Mg and Cu9Sb2 particles on the order of microns exist in the inner-grain and grain boundaries. These particles improve the machinability, however, lower the tensile strength and the elongation. A three-way pipe joint was successfully punched with the fabricated Mg-Sb brass bar, and this demonstrated that the fabricated Mg-Sb brass possesses favorable hot working property.
