The effect of a slow-releasing oxytocin preparation on the ovulation rate of Merino ewes was investigated. Synchronised Merino ewes were subcutaneously injected with a slow-re-leasing preparation containing 10 IU oxytocin, 48 hours after sponge withdrawal. Laparo-scopic examination of the ovaries of all ewes was performed 10 d after the oxytocin treatment in order to determine the number of corpora lutea per ewe. The ovulation rate of the adult ewes of the treated and control groups was 179.1 % and 159.1 % respectively (p < 0.05) while that of the 2-tooth ewes was 108.3 % and 112.8 % respectively (p > 0.05). It would appear that a higher ovulation rate can be obtained by a single injection of a slow-releasing oxytocin preparation at the onset of oestrus. The lack of response in the 2-tooth ewes was probably due to their relatively low body weight.

<p>The aim of this study was to estimate the limiting litter size components in rabbit females from a Synthetic line (n=32) and a Local population (n=34). Ovulation rate, number of implanted and live embryos were counted by laparoscopy at 12 d after mating. Prolificacy (total newborn, number born alive and mortality) and embryonic, foetal and prenatal survival at day of birth of the 3<sup>rd</sup> gestation were measured. The analysed traits were body weight of the female at mating, ovulation rate, implanted, live and resorbed embryos, embryonic, foetal and prenatal survival, as well as total newborn, number born alive and mortality at birth. Synthetic line females had a higher ovulation rate compared to the Local population (11.03±0.23 vs. 8.41±0.23 corpora lutea; <em>P</em>&lt;0.0001). Synthetic line displayed a higher number of implanted embryos (10.00±0.25 vs. 7.85±0.25 embryos; <em>P</em>&lt;0.0001). No difference was found between groups for number of resorbed embryos. Similar embryonic, foetal and prenatal survival rates were reported between the Synthetic line and the Local population. Additionally, total newborn was higher in the Synthetic line than in the Local population (+1.46 kits; <em>P</em>&lt;0.05). A principal components analysis was performed. The first four principal components (PC) explained more than 90% of the total variation in both lines. Total newborn, number born alive and live embryos were the main variables defining the 1<sup>st</sup> PC. Resorbed embryos and foetal survival were located in the 2<sup>nd</sup> PC. Ovulation rate and embryonic survival were the predominant variables defining the 3<sup>rd</sup> PC. The body weight of females was located in the 4<sup>th</sup> PC. The phenotypic correlation between total newborn and its components were high and positive in both lines, except for ovulation rate and total newborn, where it was moderate in Synthetic line. In conclusion, the females from Synthetic line have a higher total newborn than those from Local population, as a consequence of a higher number of released oocytes and embryos that successfully reach implantation. However, a higher uterine crowding in Synthetic line seems to limit survival of foetuses that reach term of gestation, while ovulation rate is the principal limiting factor of total newborn in Local population.</p>

Traditional contraceptive practices and use of medicinal plants is a common occurrence in Kaduna State, Nigeria. Lawsonia inermis L. (Lythraceae) roots which is the most frequently used anti-fertility agent was evaluated in rats. Apparently healthy female and male Wistar rats were used. Pre-implantation and mating ratio, determinations of implantation sites and Corpora lutea were also conducted. The effects of extract on weight of the rats were also determined. There were loss of implantation sites and decrease in body weight. The number of implantation sites showed dose–response relationship significantly (p£0.05) among the doses of extract and to standard drug (ethinyl estradiol). There was also significant (p£0.05) difference observed in the number of Corpora lutea in all experimental and control groups. Similarly, there was significant (p£0.05) difference observed in all the experimental and control groups on percentage pre-implantation loss. The plant extract exhibit anti-fertility effects. Context Patients with chronic ankle instability (CAI) exhibit deficits in neuromuscular control, resulting in altered movement strategies. However, no researchers have examined neuromuscular adaptations to dynamic movement strategies during multiplanar landing and cutting among patients with CAI, individuals who are ankle-sprain copers, and control participants. Objective To investigate lower extremity joint power, stiffness, and ground reaction force (GRF) during a jump-landing and cutting task among CAI, coper, and control groups. Design Cross-sectional study. Setting Laboratory. Patients or Other Participants A total of 22 patients with CAI (age = 22.7 ± 2.0 years, height = 174.6 ± 10.4 cm, mass = 73.4 ± 12.1 kg), 22 ankle-sprain copers (age = 22.1 ± 2.1 years, height = 173.8 ± 8.2 cm, mass = 72.6 ± 12.3 kg), and 22 healthy control participants (age = 22.5 ± 3.3 years, height = 172.4 ± 13.3 cm, mass = 72.6 ± 18.7 kg). Intervention(s) Participants performed 5 successful trials of a jump-landing and cutting task. Main Outcome Measure(s) Using motion-capture cameras and a force plate, we collected lower extremity ankle-, knee-, and hip-joint power and stiffness and GRFs during the jump-landing and cutting task. Functional analyses of variance were used to evaluate between-groups differences in these dependent variables throughout the contact phase of the task. Results Compared with the coper and control groups, the CAI group displayed (1) up to 7% of body weight more posterior and 52% of body weight more vertical GRF during initial landing followed by decreased GRF during the remaining stance and 22% of body weight less medial GRF across most of stance; (2) 8.8 W/kg less eccentric and 3.2 W/kg less concentric ankle power, 6.4 W/kg more eccentric knee and 4.8 W/kg more eccentric hip power during initial landing, and 5.0 W/kg less eccentric knee and 3.9 W/kg less eccentric hip power; and (3) less ankle- and knee-joint stiffness during the landing phase. Concentric power patterns were similar to eccentric power patterns. Conclusions The CAI group demonstrated altered neuromechanics, redistributing energy absorption from the distal (ankle) to the proximal (knee and hip) joints, which coincided with decreased ankle and knee stiffness during landing. Our data suggested that although the coper and control groups showed similar landing and cutting strategies, the CAI group used altered strategies to modulate impact forces during the task.

Treatment with testosterone increases ovulation rate in pigs. The present study was conducted to examine the effects of 5alpha-dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a non-aromatizable androgen receptor ligand, on ovulation rate and amounts of androgen receptor and FSH receptor mRNAs in postpubertal gilts. In Expt 1, ovulation rate in response to daily i.m. injections of 0, 6, 60 or 600 microg DHT kg(-1) body weight from day 13 of the oestrous cycle (day 0 = day 1 of oestrus) to the following oestrus increased with each dose of DHT (P < 0.05). The mean increase in number of corpora lutea ranged from approximately three to 17 over the three dosages of DHT. In Expt 2, gilts treated daily with 60 microg DHT kg(-1) body weight during the early follicular phase (from day 13 to day 16), coincident with follicular recruitment, or the late follicular phase (day 17 to oestrus), had higher (P < 0.05) rates of ovulation compared with gilts that received vehicle, and were not different from gilts treated with DHT from day 13 to oestrus. Percentage recovery of day 3 embryos was not altered when gilts were treated from day 13 to day 16 or from day 17 to oestrus; however, treatment of gilts with DHT from day 13 to oestrus decreased recovery of day 3 (Expt 1) or day 11 (Expt 2) conceptuses. Daily administration of 6 microg DHT kg(-1) body weight to gilts from day 13 of the oestrous cycle to the following oestrus (Expt 3) did not affect the relative amounts of androgen receptor mRNA, but increased (P < 0.05) the amounts of FSH receptor mRNA in preovulatory follicles as determined by RT-PCR. The results of these experiments indicate that androgens may regulate ovulation rate in gilts. One of the roles of androgens might be regulation of the amounts of FSH receptor mRNA in ovarian follicles.

The objective of this study was to examine the effect of administration of FSH in aluminum hydroxide gel (Gel; an adjuvant and adsorbent of large molecules) by a single injection on superovulatory response and embryo recovery in cattle. In this study, cloprostenol-synchronized (PGF; Clopromate C; Sumitomo Pharmaceuticals Co., Tokyo, Japan) nonlactating Holstein cows were divided into 2 groups (Gel-treated and Controls) between Days 8 and 11 after estrus in 2 experiments in a crossover design. In Experiment 1, 40 mg FSH (Antrin-R10; Kawasaki Mitaka Pharmaceutical Co., Tokyo, Japan) was mixed with 10 mL aluminum hydroxide suspended in saline at a concentration of 3 mg Al mL-1 and administered by a single IM injection (n = 12; 10 mL-Gel group). Blood samples were collected at 0, 1, 2, 4, 8, and 12 h, and thereafter every 24 h until embryo recovery for measurement of FSH levels in a time-resolved fluoroimmunoassay. In Experiment 2, 40 mg FSH was mixed with 5 mL Gel and injected into fat in the inguinal region (n = 8, 5 mL-Gel group). The Control group in both experiments (n = 2 and n = 8, respectively) received 40 mg FSH twice daily for 4 days in decreasing doses (8, 8, 6, 6, 4, 4, 2, and 2 mg) by IM injection (Experiment 1), or in the inguinal region (Experiment 2). PGF (0.75 mg) was administered twice on the third day of treatment, and cows were inseminated 48 and 60 h after second PGF dose; embryo recovery was performed 7 days later. Follicular development was monitored ultrasonically every 24 h from the first FSH treatment to ovulation, and the numbers of medium (MF, 5–8 mm) and large (LF, &gt;8 mm) follicles, and corpora lutea (CL) were counted on the day of embryo recovery. Data were analyzed by Student&apos;s t-test. In Experiment 1, there were no differences in the mean (� SD) number of CL or transferable embryos between the 10 mL-Gel (10.5 � 9.6 and 6.0 � 8.0, respectively) and Control (14.8 � 9.6 and 9.0 � 6.6, respectively) groups (P &gt; 0.1). The growth of LF and MF in the 10 mL-Gel group occurred 24 h earlier than in the Control group (24 and 48 h after initiation of FSH treatment, respectively; P &lt; 0.05). However, follicle growth stopped at 72 h in the 10 mL-Gel group and at 96 h in the Control group (P &lt; 0.01). FSH concentrations in the 10 mL-Gel group increased markedly to 2.0 � 0.7 ng mL-1 at 12 h, remained there at 24 h, and decreased to 1.0 � 0.3 ng mL-1 at 72 h, whereas FSH concentrations in the Control group increased gradually to 1.1 � 0.3 ng mL-1 at 24 h, remained at 1.2 � 0.3 ng mL-1 from 24 to 96 h, and then decreased to baseline (0.9 � 0.3 ng mL-1) at 120 h (P &lt; 0.05). In Experiment 2, no significant differences in number of CL or transferable embryos were found between the 5 mL-Gel (11.8 � 13.0 and 4.1 � 4.0, respectively) and Control (12.0 � 11.0 and 4.0 � 3.1, respectively) groups, and follicular growth profiles did not differ between groups (P &gt; 0.4). Results suggest that administration of FSH in 5 mL Gel by a single injection in the inguinal region is effective in inducing superstimulation in Holstein cattle. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of a rearing-fasting program as an alternative bio-stimulation method to hormonal eCG treatments on the embryo recovery of rabbit females. A total number of 119 nulliparous New Zealand White rabbit females at 14 wk old were randomly allocated into 1 of the following 3 groups before the first insemination at 18 weeks old: control group (n = 39), females were fed ad libitum until the first insemination; eCG group (n = 34), females were fed ad libitum and treated with 50 IU of eCG hormone SC 60 h before the first insemination; and r-FP group (n = 46), females were fasted 3 days per week during 3 wk and then allowed to feed ad libitum 1 wk before the first insemination. Sexual receptivity was evaluated for each group on the day of insemination. Only receptive females (74/119) were artificially inseminated and immediately were induced for ovulation by intramuscular injection with gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogue (0.8 μg of buserelin acetate). In 23 receptive females, embryos were recovered postmortem at 72 h post-insemination in each group (n = 7, 9, and 7 in control, eCG, and r-FP groups, respectively). The number of recent corpora lutea on both ovaries (CL), the number of hemorrhagic follicles (HF), the recovery rate (RR), the number of normal embryos recovered in receptive females (NE), the embryo donor rate (DR), and the blastocyst rate (BR) were recorded for all groups. A General Linear Model was performed to analyse CL, HF, and NE, and a chi-square test was used to compare sexual receptivity, RR, DR, and BR in the experimental groups (eCG, r-FP, and control). A significant increase in sexual receptivity was observed in eCG group compared with the other groups (82 v. 50 and 59%; eCG v. r-FP and control groups, respectively; P < 0.05). The CL was significantly (P < 0.05) higher in eCG group (13.8) than in r-FP and control groups (9.1 and 10.3, respectively). However, high incidence of HF was also observed in the eCG group (3.9 v. 0.9 and 1.3 in eCG v. r-FP and control, respectively; P < 0.05). The RR was significantly (P < 0.05) higher in r-FP group (64.1%) when compared with eCG and control groups (38.7 and 20.8%, respectively). The DR was significantly higher for r-FP group compared with the control (100% v. 42.9%, respectively; P < 0.05) and intermediate for eCG group (77.8%). No significant differences were observed in the NE (6.1, 5.7, and 5.0 in eCG, r-FP, and control, respectively). The BR significantly (P < 0.05) decreased in eCG group when compared with r-FP or control groups (4.7% v. 60.0 or 53.3%, respectively). Our results indicated that a rearing-fasting program followed by 1 wk of feed flushing before the first insemination of nulliparous rabbit females could be recommended as an efficient bio-stimulation method to control embryo recovery. However, these results need to be confirmed in a larger scale and several reproductive cycles before widely applied.

Abstract OBJECTIVE To test clinical and analgesic effects of a single-injection caudal thoracic paravertebral block (TPVB) after localization of the thoracic paravertebral space with a loss-of-resistance to air injection technique in female dogs undergoing unilateral radical mastectomy. ANIMALS 14 client-owned dogs. PROCEDURES Dogs were premedicated with methadone, anesthetized with propofol and sevoflurane, and randomly assigned to receive a TPVB or no block preoperatively. Rescue analgesia with fentanyl and methadone was provided on the basis of cardiovascular responses during surgery and postoperative pain scores assigned with a validated pain scale. Required dose of rescue opioids; mean end-tidal sevoflurane concentration; episodes of hypotension, bradycardia, and other complications; quality of recovery scores; and postoperative pain scores were compared between groups. RESULTS Median intraoperative fentanyl doses were 0 µg/kg (range, 0 to 2 µg/kg) and 4 µg/kg (range, 2 to 6 µg/kg) for the TPVB and control groups, respectively. Median postoperative methadone doses were 0 mg/kg (range, 0 to 0.2 mg/kg) and 0.6 mg/kg (range, 0.4 to 0.6 mg/kg) for the TPVB and control groups, respectively. Recovery scores and pain scores assigned at the time of and 1 hour after extubation were significantly lower in the TPVB group than in the control group. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE A single-injection caudal TPVB improved pain control and recovery quality in female dogs undergoing unilateral radical mastectomy. Because the TPVB involves only a single injection, does not take long to perform, and requires only readily available low-cost equipment, the technique may be a valuable option in both referral and first-opinion practice.

SUMMARYTwenty-four sows from three nutritional regimes imposed until weaning of their third litters were used to investigate the influence of weight and body condition on ovulation rate.For low-, medium- and high-plane sows respectively, mean corpora lutea numbers at 3 to 6 days post coitus were 13·8±0·78, 16·4±0·87 and 15·2±1·01 (not significantly different); conception rates at first service were 50, 87·5 and 100% percentages prenatal mortality were 36·1±7·95, 67·2±7·26 and 41·7±7·26, and mean numbers of pigs born alive were 9·0±1·19, 5·2±1·09 and 8·8±1·09.Pooled data indicated no significant effect of body weight but a significant effect of weight loss during the preceding lactation on ovulation rate (P<0–01).

SummaryFemale reproductive performance is reported in mice selected for ten generations for one of three criteria: either appetite (A), fat percentage (F) or total lean mass (P). For each criterion lines were selected for high (H) or low (L) performance, with contemporary unselected controls (C). In the A and P lines, litter size changed in the direction of the selected criterion, the changes being larger and more rapidly established in the A than in the P lines. At generation 10, the differences in litter size between high and low lines were 2·6 live young born in the A lines, and 1·0 live young born in the P lines. The differences in 6-week weight between the high and low lines were 3·5 g in the A lines, 6·5 g in the P lines. Changes in ovulation rate were the primary reason for changes in litter size, the differences between the high and low lines being 3·8 corpora lutea for the A lines, and 3·1 corpora lutea for the P lines. Fitting body weight at mating as a covariate within lines in the analysis of ovulation rate and live foetus number removed the differences between the high and low selected P lines, but not those in the A lines. The high and low selected A and P lines did not differ in prenatal survival. There were no consistent differences in litter size, ovulation rate or pre-natal survival in the F lines.

Climatic models predict scenarios in which ambient temperature will continue increasing worldwide. Under these climatic conditions, fitness and animal welfare of many populations are expected to suffer, especially those that live in captive or semi-natural conditions, where opportunities of heat abatement are limited. We undertook an experimental design to assess the effect of heat abatement that water sprinkling might have on Iberian red deer calf growth and behaviour from birth to weaning (135 days). One group of ten mother-calf pairs lived on plots with water sprinkling (treatment) available during summer’s hottest time of the day, while the control group (nine mother-calf pairs) occupied plots with no available water sprinkling. Treatment and control groups were fed ad libitum and swapped between plots every seven days to minimise any plot effect. Body weight was monitored weekly and individual behaviour was recorded once or twice a week at mid-day. We observed that calves had showers under the sprinklers and wallowed in mud puddles. The results clearly indicated that calves of the treatment group showed a significant increase in body weight at weaning in comparison with the control group, with no differences between sexes (treatment: male = 56.5 kg, female = 50.3 kg; control: male = 50.3 kg, female = 46.5 kg). Mother weight and mother age effects were negligible on calf body weight at weaning. The heavier the mother the faster was the rate of growth of its offspring, irrespective of calf sex. The model indicated that although males grew significantly slower than female calves in the control group, males grew faster than females when exposed to the treatment. Calves of the treatment group spent less time drinking, less time in the shade, similar time eating and more time in motion than calves of the control group. There were no behavioural differences between calf sexes of treatment and control groups. The results indicate the importance of providing animals with opportunities of heat abatement in hot environments to improve animal growth and welfare in farmed Iberian red deer.
