Experimental Investigation of Aluminium Hybrid Composites Reinforced with ZnS, TiO2 and BaTiO3 Produced Through Powder Metallurgy

Semiconductors like ZnS, TiO2 and BaTiO3 were reinforced with Al-Al2O3 Metal Matrix Composites (MMCs) and were made through powder metallurgy in order to have high strength, high hardness and good thermal conductivity compared with conventional materials. Three MMC of test specimens were prepared with varying reinforcement ratio Al-Al2O3-ZnS(94-5-1), Al-Al2O3-TiO2(94-5-1), Al-Al2O3-BaTiO3(94-5-1) percentage by weight respectively. The hardness test has been made by using Brinell hardness testing instrument. Hardness test revealed that the addition of reinforcement TiO2, BaTiO3 increases the hardness value. However, the addition of ZnS to the Al-Al2O3 MMCs showed decrease in the hardness value. The crystal structure of the 3 composites were examined through X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) peaks.

AbstractTitanium monoboride (TiB) whisker-reinforced titanium (Ti) matrix composites were produced by powder metallurgy, through vacuum sintering. TiB is formed by thermal decomposition of TiB2 precursor. In addition, a new hybrid composite was developed by admixing nanograined and nanocrystalline (more important) Ti to enhance the transformation mechanism of TiB2 to TiB phase. The morphology and particle size of the initial powders, mixtures and the microstructure of the composites have been studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The phase analysis and transformation monitoring were performed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The sintered composites were also subjected to compressive strength and hardness measurements. According to XRD results, through the addition of nanocrystalline Ti, a probable enhancement of the TiB2 → TiB transformation occurred producing more TiB whiskers in the hybrid composites. All samples of the hybrid composites exhibited improved yield strength (1365 MPa) and hardness (358 HV) compared to the non-hybrid ones 927 MPa and 254 HV, respectively. Graphical abstract

With the rapid development of aerospace and automobile industries, metal matrix composites (MMCs) have attracted much attention because of its excellent performance. In this paper, Ni-Cr/AC8A composites reinforced with porous Ni-Cr preform were manufactured by low pressure infiltration process, infiltration temperatures are 700oC~850oC. The microstructure and phase composition of composites were evaluated using optical microscope, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and electro-probe microanalysis (EPMA), It's found that they're intermetallic compounds generated in the composites. Recently, intermetallic compounds have attracted much attention as high-temperature material. We study the hardness of Ni-Cr/AC8A composites, the results show the Ni-Cr/AC8A composite has high hardness due to the intermetallic compounds exist.

Abstract In this study, powder metallurgy was applied in a furnace atmosphere to form titanium boride layers on a commercially pure Ti surface. Experiments were carried out using the solid-state boriding method at 900 °C and 1000°C for 12 h and 24 h. Samples were produced by pressing the commercially pure Ti powders under 870 MPa. The sintering process required by the powder metallurgy method was carried out simultaneously with the boriding process. Thus, the sintering and boriding were performed in one stage. The formation of the boride layer was investigated by field emission scanning electron microscopy, optical-light microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and elemental dispersion spectrometry analyses. In addition, microhardness measurements were performed to examine the effect of the boriding process on hardness. The Vickers microhardness of the boronized surface reached 1773 HV, which was much higher than the 150 HV hardness of the commercially pure Ti substrate. The X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the boriding process had enabled the formation of TiB and TiB2 on the powder metallurgy Ti substrate surface. Consequently, the production of Ti via powder metallurgy is a potentially cost-effective alternative to the conventional method, and the boriding process supplies TiB and TiB2 that provide super-high hardness and excellent wear and corrosion resistance.

The Metal Matrix Composites (MMCs) especially Aluminum based systems have unique advantages of having superior mechanical, chemical and electrical properties, in addition to light weight and high stiffness. In this work, composites comprising of Aluminum with varied concentrations of Cenospheres as reinforcement was produced by Powder Metallurgy (PM) route. The densification of the composites was effected both by conventional and Microwave (MW) sintering techniques. The microstructures of the sintered samples were observed through scanning electron microscope (SEM) and phases by x ray diffraction technique (XRD), followed by evaluation of tribological parameter namely slide wear behavior and solid particle erosion resistance. The densities and the Brinell hardness values for the samples were also evaluated. The results showed that microwave sintered samples exhibited higher hardness, lower erosion and slide wear loss.

W–Cu (0, 0.25, 0.75, 1.5, and 3 wt.%)/Lu2O3 composite materials were prepared through electroless plating with simplified pretreatment method and powder metallurgy. The phases and morphologies of the W–Cu/Lu2O3 composites were characterized by X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy. The relative density, microhardness, electrical conductivity, and bending strength of the sintered samples were examined. The experimental results show that W–Cu composites with uniform structures can be obtained with pretreated W using the simplified method, followed by electroless Cu plating. The microstructure and properties of the composites were significantly affected by the addition of Lu2O3 nanoparticles, resulting in high electrical conductivity and strength. The electrical conductivity of W–Cu/1.5 wt.% Lu2O3 composites reached 63.3%, which is higher than the national standard value of 50.71%. The bending strength of W–Cu/1.5 wt. % Lu2O3 reached 1306.7 MPa, which is 65.41% higher than the national standard. These results may be attributed to the uniform distribution of refined particles with Lu2O3 content increased to 1.5 wt. %.

In this paper, Al-Fe-Si-Zn-Cu (AA8079) matrix composites with several weight percentages of B4C (0, 5, 10, and 15) were synthesized by powder metallurgy (PM). The essential amount of powders was milled to yield different compositions such as AA8079, AA8079-5 wt.%B4C, AA8079-10 wt.%B4C, and AA8079-15 wt.%B4C. The influence of powder metallurgy parameters on properties’ density, hardness, and compressive strength was examined. The green compacts were produced at three various pressures: 300 MPa, 400 MPa, and 500 MPa. The fabricated green compacts were sintered at 375 °C, 475 °C, and 575 °C for the time period of 1, 2 and 3 h, respectively. Furthermore, the sintered samples were subjected to X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, Energy Dispersive Analysis (EDAX), and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) examinations. The SEM examination confirmed the uniform dispersal of B4C reinforcement with AA8079 matrix. Corrosion behavior of the composites samples was explored. From the studies, it is witnessed that the rise in PM process parameters enhances the density, hardness, compressive strength, and corrosion resistance.

The aim of this study is to determine the optimum heating rate in fabricating Fe-Cr-Al2O3 composites by powder metallurgy methods. The Fe-based composites reinforced with ceramics are widely used due to their high strength, hardness and wear resistance. Among steps in powder metallurgy methods are mixing, compaction and sintering. Sintering is a very important step due to its ability to evolve microstructural features that govern the end properties. Sintering of green compacts made of iron powder mixture must be performed in vacuum or in a reducing atmosphere because water-atomised iron powder particles are oxidized on the surface and in this way some deoxidation reaction can occur during sintering. The heating process up to sintering temperature, plays a major role, the major proportion of densification occurs during the heating process. The composites produced were subjected to the following tests: densification, Vickers micro hardness, microstructure using SEM and X-ray diffraction analysis. From this investigation, to achieve higher densification and hardness the optimal heating rate is 10°C/minute. X-Ray Diffraction study showed that the fabrication of the composites does not lead to any compositional changes of the matrix phase and the reinforcing phase.

Metal matrix composite has been used widely in some applications such as the automotive and aerospace industries. In this work, Aluminum/Fly ash composite material was made with an egg yolk space holder and the manufacturing process was successfully carried out. The process includes the mixing, stirring, drying, and sintering processes that were undertaken including the powder metallurgy method. The metal form has successfully been fabricated however the hardness test results for specimens were not very satisfactory. The Aluminum/Fly ash porous composite materials with egg yolk space holders were was characterized using X-Ray Florence (XRF), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) test by producing the main peak of Al N and Al2O3. Observation of SEM by showing phenomena such as; cracks, alignment, and porous. Density Testing by producing an average porosity of 28.87%. The observation of Optical Microscopes by showing the shape of the shaft that is not homogeneous.

Powder metallurgy and casting have been used to produce aluminum with 1.3, 4, and 8 vol. % fullerene additions. Fullerene extract was mixed with Al and heat-treated to obtain various levels of dispersion of the fullerenes. Intergranular dispersion of stable fullerenes was accomplished by both powder metallurgy and casting; however, x-ray diffraction indicated the formation of some Al4C3. Homogeneous dispersion did not occur because of limited diffusion in the solid state or limited solubility of fullerene in Al in the liquid state. Enhancements in hardness over that for Al were observed yet were not comparable to precipitation hardened Al alloys since a less homogeneous dispersion was achieved. Interest in Al having fullerene additions is for development of fullerene strengthened materials where fullerenes act as nanosize dispersoids for dispersion strengthening of metals or as a lightweight reinforcement in metal-matrix composites.

Zirconium dioxide (zirconia) ceramics are known by its high strength and toughness and titanium dioxide (titania) ceramics has outstanding surface properties. The ceramic composite formed between the two oxides are expected to have advantages of both ceramics, especially when its surface area is increased by pores. In this work, ceramic composites of ZrO2-Y2O3-TiO2were synthesized by coprecipitation and rice starch was added as pore former in 10, 20 and 30 wt%. Powders were cold pressed as cylindrical pellets and sintered at 1500 °C for 01 hour and ceramics were characterized by techniques as Archimedes method for density measurements, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Results showed that pores are inhomogeneously distributed through ceramic bodies.
