The novel friction stir technology is adopted in modern automotive industries to meet the desired properties like hardness, impact toughness and tribological behaviour over the conventional techniques like stir casting, compo casting, squeeze casting, electroplating and infiltration methods. AA7075 surface composites fabricated with different volume fractions of fly ash and emery particles is said to enhance the aforementioned properties. The composites are processed through friction stir process (rotational speed −1200 rpm, transverse speed – 56 mm/min, tool tilt angle – 2 °). During characterization, the Microstructural examination of surface composites depicts fine and homogenous distribution of reinforcements in the friction stir process region owing to severe plastic deformation and dynamic recrystallization process. Substantially, good interface is formed between the reinforcement particulates and base substrate. Inclusion of Fe3O4, Al2O3 and SiO2 constituents through fly ash and emery reinforcements associated with the homogenous dispersion strengthening mechanism favours for the superior hardness of surface hybrid composite specimen 50E50FA. Decremented grain size and load bearing capacity of the reinforcements is beneficial for the crack propagation resistance that enhances the impact toughness behaviour (17.4 J/cm2) of the same specimen. Wear rate of the specimens are evaluated through pin on disc tribometer. The decrease in the wear rate of hard specimen 50E50FA is observed due to the reduced contact area between its surface and counter disc. The morphology of worn specimens using SEM analysis shows the combined abrasive and adhesive wear as the worn mechanism.

Abstract. СVD chromium coatings are evaporated on steel substrate from chrome-organic compounds. For crystallization with forming of nano-particles of chromium carbides, subsequent heating (annealing) of tool steel with hybrid coatings is carrying out. Significant increase of micro-hardness of the coating up to 27000 MPa is observed due to the dispersion strengthening. Optimal annealing parameters (temperature and duration) are determined, which maximally strengthen the coatings and increase their adhesion to the steel substrate.

AbstractSelective laser melted (SLM) aluminum alloys are widely used for many technical applications. However, the application is limited to low temperatures due to their relatively poor creep resistance. The creep resistance and strength could be enhanced by oxide dispersion-strengthening. A hypothesis is that oxygen intake during selective laser melting can lead to formation of fine aluminum oxides and thus strengthen the SLMed part. To elucidate this in more detail, selective laser melted AlSi10Mg was tested in creep experiments at temperatures of 300 °C. Although, in other studies at lower temperatures, a relatively large stress exponent for creep was found, the high temperatures in this work led to a creep exponent of just 7 to 8, indicating no significant dispersion strengthening. Furthermore, for future research, it was necessary to investigate the feasibility of SLM with pure aluminum. For this purpose, a parameter study was carried out and an optimum parameter set for pure aluminum was found. Dense samples with a porosity below 0.2% were produced. Selective laser melting was carried out with a varying oxygen content in the inert-gas atmosphere to elucidate the hypothetic strengthening effects by oxygen intake. However, even at 800 ppm oxygen in the atmosphere, no effect on hardness and microstructure could be observed.

TiC ceramics have become one of the most potential ultra-high temperature structural materials, because of its high melting point, low density, and low price. However, the poor mechanical properties seriously limit its development and application. In this work, this review follows PRISMA standards, the mechanism of the second phase (particles, whiskers, and carbon nanotubes) reinforced TiC ceramics was reviewed. In addition, the effects of the second phase on the microstructure, phase composition and mechanical properties of TiC ceramics were systematically studied. The addition of carbon black effectively eliminates the residual TiO2 in the matrix, and the bending strength of the matrix is effectively improved by the strengthening bond formed between TiC; SiC particles effectively inhibit the grain growth through pinning, the obvious crack deflection phenomenon is found in the micrograph; The smaller grain size of WC plays a dispersion strengthening role in the matrix and makes the matrix uniformly refined, and the addition of WC forms (Ti, W) C solid solution, WC has a solid solution strengthening effect on the matrix; SiC whiskers effectively improve the fracture toughness of the matrix through bridging and pulling out, the microscopic diagram and mechanism diagram of SiC whisker action process are shown in this paper. The effect of new material carbon nanotubes on the matrix is also discussed; the bridging effect of CNTs can effectively improve the strength of the matrix, during sintering, some CNTs were partially expanded into GNR, in the process of crack bridging and propagation, more fracture energy is consumed by flake GNR. Finally, the existing problems of TiC-based composites are pointed out, and the future development direction is prospected.

This paper investigated the effect of magnesium as a dispersion strengthening material on some mechanical properties of 1200-Aluminium (Al-Fe-Si) alloy, a typical commercial aluminium alloy used in the production of household utensils. 1200-Aluminium (Al-Fe-Si) alloy containing varying percentages of the dispersion hardening material (i.e. Magnesium) were produced and mechanical tests namely; hardness, tensile strength and impact strength were carried out. Also, the microstructures of the cast materials were studied. The results showed that increase in magnesium content, as dispersion hardening material improved the hardness, tensile strength and caused a slight decrease in impact strength of the 1200-Aluminium alloy. It is inferred from this work that using magnesium as a dispersion hardening material brings about corresponding improvement in some mechanical properties of 1200-Aluminium (Al-Fe-Si) alloy. The effect of CeO2 content on the microstructure and properties of SiCp/Al-Si composites prepared by powder metallurgy was studied, and the mechanism of CeO2 in composites was deeply analyzed. The results show that the addition of the appropriate amount of CeO2 can refine the Si particles and improve the tensile properties of the SiCp/Al-Si composites. As the CeO2 content increases from 0 to 0.4 vol%, the particle size of the Si phase shows a tendency to decrease first and then increase, while the tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation of the composites show a trend of first increasing and then decreasing. When the CeO2 content is 0.2 vol%, the refining effect of CeO2 and the tensile properties of composites are the best. The fracture mode of SiCp/Al-Si composites with a rare earth addition is a mixed fracture. There are three main mechanisms for CeO2 in SiCp/Al-Si composites. One is when CeO2 serves as the nucleation substrate of Si phase to refine Si particles. The second is when CeO2 reacts with the alloying elements in the aluminum matrix to form a new phase, CeCu2Si2, which can not only play a role of dispersion strengthening, but also improve the bonding strength between Al matrix and Si particles. The third is the pinning effect of CeO2 and CeCu2Si2 particles on grain boundaries or phase boundaries to refine aluminum grains.

AlCrCoNiFeCTax (x = 0, 0.5 and 1.0) high-entropy alloys coatings were synthesized on 45# steel by laser cladding. The microstructural evolution of the coatings with the change in x was analyzed in detail. The effect of Ta content on the wear behaviors of the coatings at different circumstances (in air and 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution) was especially highlighted. The microstructure presented the following change: equiaxed BCC (Body Centered Cubic) grains + fine MC (carbide, M = Al, Cr, Co and Ni) particles (x = 0) → equiaxed BCC grains + coarse TaC blocks + fine TaC particles (x = 0.5) → flower-like BCC grains + coarse TaC blocks + eutecticum (BCC + TaC) (x = 1.0). The average microhardness of the coatings demonstrated an upward tendency with increasing x due to the combination of the stronger solid solution and dispersion strengthening from the significant difference in atomic radius between Ta and Fe and the formation of TaC with an extremely high hardness. The wear rates of the coatings were gradually reduced both in air and in NaCl solution along with the increase in Ta content, which were lower than those of the substrate. The wear rates of the coatings with x = 0.5 and 1.0 in NaCl solution were slightly reduced by about 17% and 12% when compared with those in air. However, the values of the substrate and the coating without Ta in NaCl solution were sharply enhanced by 191% and 123% when compared with those in air. This indicated that the introduction of Ta contributed to the improvement in wear resistance both in air and in NaCl solution.

Abstract This article reports the microstructure evolution in TP347HFG austenitic steel during the aging process. The experiments were carried out at 700°C with different aging time from 500 to 3,650 h. The metallographic results show that the coherent twin and incoherent twin are existed in the original TP347HFG grains, while they gradually vanished with the increase of the aging time. After aging for 500 h, a lot of fine, dispersed particles precipitated from the matrix, but they disappeared after aging for 1,500 h. When the aging time extend to 3,650 h, the precipitates appeared apparently coarse in TP347HFG steel, which include the M23C6 and σ phase; besides, the micro-hardness of TP347HFG also changes during the aging, which was closely related to the effect of dispersion strengthening and solution strengthening. The results of the nonlinear ultrasonic measurement reveal that the β′ of TP347HFG steel was also changed with the aging time. It first increased at 0–500 h, then reduced later, and increased finally at 1,500–3,650 h. The variation of β′ in TP347HFG was influenced by a combined effect of the twin microstructure and the precipitate phase, which indicate that the nonlinear ultrasonic technique can be utilized to characterize the microstructure evolution in TP347HFG.

The aim of this study is to explore the effects of Manganese addition and homogenization treatment on the microstructures and mechanical properties of the Al–7Mg–0.15Ti (B535.0) alloy. The optical microscopy, electrical conductivity measurements, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM + EBSD), as well as Rockwell hardness and tensile tests, were exploited for this purpose. The main objectives are to refine the grain size, inhibit grain growth in the annealed state, and enhance the mechanical strength of the alloy. The results show that the addition of manganese to the Al–7Mg–0.15Ti alloys refined the as-cast and recrystallized grains of the alloys. During the homogenization process, Al4Mn high-temperature stable dispersoids were precipitated in the aluminum matrix. After annealing, the Al4Mn particles blocked the movement of grain boundaries during the growth of the recrystallized grains and inhibited grain growth. Consequently, the annealed alloys showed grain refinement and dispersion strengthening. The Al4Mn dispersoids of the alloys with manganese added were smaller and denser after a two-stage homogenization process compared to those that underwent a one-stage homogenization process. By contrast, for the alloys without the addition of manganese, the recrystallized grains showed normal growth after annealing, and different homogenization processes had no significantly different effects.
