The Gueumbeul Special Wildlife Reserve (RSFG) is a very important eco-geographic area. It is frequented by a variety of predominantly piscivorous birds that come to occupy its waters for reproduction and food needs. The present study aimed to make an inventory of the ichthyofauna of the RSFG in order to make available the database of the different species present in this body of water. The ichthyofauna were sampled monthly from March 2019 to February 2020 with the help of artisanal fishermen. The fish populations were studied using statistical analyzes and population descriptors (species richness, density, biomass and diversity indices). In total 16 species of fish divided into 15 genus and 11 families have been identified, cichlids (4 species), mugilids (3 species) being the most diverse families. The most abundant species in the catches were: Sarotherodon melanotheron and Mugil cephalus. The presence of marine species has been noted. These are Dicentrarchus punctatus, Eucinostomus melanopterus and Lichia amia but catches are very low. The calculated diversity indices showed that the ichthyofauna in the reserve has moderate diversity and a poor distribution of individuals within families. The ecosystem of the Gueumbeul basin shows signs of degradation. This degradation is materialized by an overexploitation of fishery resources by the fishing populations and a decrease in mangroves. La Réserve Spéciale de la Faune de Gueumbeul (RSFG) est une zone éco-géographique très importante. Elle est fréquentée par une diversité d’oiseaux majoritairement piscivores qui viennent occuper la zone pour des besoins de reproduction et d’alimentation. La présente étude visait à faire l’inventaire de la faune ichtyologique de la RSFG afin de rendre disponible la base de données des différentes espèces présentes dans ce plan d’eau. L’ichtyofaune a été échantillonnée de mars 2019 à février 2020 avec l’aide de pêcheurs artisans. Les peuplements de poissons ont été étudiés au moyen d’analyses statistiques et de descripteurs populationnels (la richesse spécifique, la densité, la biomasse et les indices de diversité). Au total 16 espèces de poisson réparties en 11 familles ont été recensées. Les cichlidés (4 espèces), les mugilidés (3 espèces) étant les familles les plus diverses. Les espèces les plus abondantes dans les captures sont : Sarotherodon melanotheron et Mugil cephalus. La présence d’une très faible quantité de poissons d’espèce marine a été notée, il s’agit de Dicentrarchus punctatus, Eucinostomus melanopterus et Lichia amia. Les indices de diversité calculés ont montré que l’ichtyofaune de la réserve a une diversité modérée et une mauvaise répartition des individus au sein des familles. L’écosystème de la cuvette de Gueumbeul présente des signes de dégradation. Cette dégradation est matérialisée par une surexploitation des ressources halieutiques par les populations de pêcheurs et une diminution de la mangrove.

Objectifs : La présente étude a été initiée pour établir les relations poids-longueur et les facteurs de condition de Ethmalosa fimbriata, Sardinella maderensis, Coptodon guinensis, Oreochromis schwebischi, Neochelon falcipinnis, Mugil cephalus, Parachelon grandisquamis, Eucinostomus melanopterus, Hemichromis elongatus, Pomadasys jubelini, Eleotris daganensis, Bathygobius soporator, Trachinotus teraia, Lutjanus goreensis, Mugil banannensis, et Sarotherodon melanotheron, 16 espèces les plus abondantes de la lagune Mvassa en République du Congo. Méthodologie et résultats : Les échantillonnages des poissons ont été réalisés sur 9 stations à l’aide des filets maillants de 8, 10, 20 et 30 mm de côté de la maille. Les relations poidslongueur ont été réalisées en utilisant l’équation P = aLSb et leurs coefficients de condition en utilisant l’équation K = 100*(P ⁄ LSb ). Au total, 1566 spécimens, réparties en 5 ordres, 8 familles, 16 espèces dont 10 ont été capturées en saison sèche, 14 en saison des pluies et 8 espèces communes pour les deux saisons ont été utilisés dans le cadre de cette étude. Le coefficient de détermination r 2 était significatif pour les deux saisons et variait de 0,91 pour Neochelon falcipinnis et 0,99 pour Pomadasys jubelini avec une moyenne de 0,97 ± 0,02. En saison sèche, le coefficient d’allométrie b de la relation poids-longueur variait de 2,04 pour Mugil cephalus à 3,48 Sardinella maderensis avec une moyenne de 2,79 ± 0,03. Le facteur de condition variait en moyenne de 0,66 ± 0,06 pour Sardinella maderensis à 12,22± 0,28 pour Mugil cephalus. En saison des pluies, le coefficient d’allométrie b variait de 2,41 pour Eucinostomus melanopterus à 3,94 pour Sardinella maderensis, avec une moyenne de 3,01 ± 0,05. Le facteur de condition variait de 0,02± 0,002 pour Parachelon grandisquamis à 6,73 ± 0,41 pour Eucinostomus malanopterus. Pour les huit espèces communes, le coefficient d’allométrie b était plus élevé en saison de pluie qu’en saison sèche pour la plupart des espèces (63 %). Conclusion et application des résultats : Ces résultats rapportent des informations relatives à la biologie des poissons rencontrés dans la lagune Mvassa, mais aussi sur l’influence de la saison sur les relations poids-longueur et les coefficients de condition. The weight-length relationships were performed using equation P = aLSb and their condition coefficients using equation K = 100*(P/LSb ). A total of 1566 specimens, divided into 5 orders, 8 families, 16 species of which 10 were caught in the dry season, 14 in the rainy season and 8 common species for both seasons were used in this study. The correlation coefficient r 2 was significant for both seasons and ranged from 0.91 for Neochelon falcipinnis and 0.99 for Pomadasys jubelini with an average of 0.97 ± 0.02. In the dry season, the allometry coefficient b of the weight-length relationship ranged from 2.04 for Mugil cephalus to 3.48 Sardinella maderensis with an average of 2.79 ± 0.03. The condition factor ranged on average from 0.66 ± 0.06 for Sardinella maderensis to 12.22 ± 0.28 for Mugil cephalus. In the rainy season, the allometry coefficient b ranged from 2.41 for Eucinostomus melanopterus to 3.940 for Sardinella maderensis, with an average of 3.014 ± 0.05. The condition factor ranged from 0.02 ± 0.002 for Parachelon grandisquamis to 6.73 ± 0.41 for Eucinostomus malanopterus. For the eight common species, the allometry coefficient b was higher in the rainy season than in the dry season for most species (63%). Conclusion and application of the results: These results report information on the biology of the fish encountered in the Mvassa lagoon, but also on the influence of the season on weight- length relationships and condition coefficients

A study on the catch composition and diversity of cast net fisheries was conducted between May and August, 2017 in the New Calabar River, Rivers state, using cast net of varying mesh sizes (1.5mm and 2.5mm). Fish samples were collected from three sampling stations, viz. Station1- Aluu, Station 2- Choba and Station 3- Iwofe. The fish species recorded comprised of 26 species under 11 families, and one decapod crustacean. The three most abundant species were; Coptodon guineensis (25.11%), Coptodon zilli (18.56%) both from the Cichlidae family, and Penaeus nitialis (10.90%) from the Penaeidae family, while the least abundant species was Liza grandisquamis (0.13%) from the Mugilidae family. The diversity indices showed that station 2 recorded the highest number of species (21) while station 1 recorded the lowest with (12) species. Simpson’s indexes of diversity, Simpson’s reciprocal index, Shannon- weiner index, and Pielou’s evenness index, were estimated. This study serves as a base line data which will assist relevant bodies in the management and conservation of fisheries resources in the New Calabar River. It is therefore recommended that for an improved and sustainable exploitation and management of fisheries resources of the New Calabar River, proper monitoring and management for fish stock must be done.J. AbstractThe arthropod community associated with irrigated rice grown in five sites in Luzon Island, Philippines, was analysed using guild categories. Phytophages and predators were predominant in all sites. The phytophage species were mainly Homoptera and dominated by Nephotettix virescens (Distant), N. nigropictus (Stål) (Cicadellidae), and Nilaparvata lugens (Stål) and Sogatella furcifera (Horváth) (Delphacidae). Predators were mainly Heteroptera with Microvelia douglasi atrolineata Bergoth (Veliidae), Mesovelia vittigera (Horváth) (Mesoveliidae), and Cyrtorhinus lividipennis Reuter (Miridae) as the most abundant species. Spiders were the next dominant group with Pardosa pseudoannulata (Böesenberg & Strand) and three species of Tetragnatha the most common. Differences in species diversity between the sites were easily differentiated using diversity indices. The relative differences in arthropod abundance, species richness and diversity may be attributed to the median temperatures, cropping patterns, and diversity in crop stages and germplasm in the sites. Predator-Homoptera correlations were significant in all cases. High positive correlations were obtained for veliids, spiders and Cyrtorhinus lividipennis, in most sites.

Riassunto - Gli scopi di questa ricerca sono quelli di contribuire alla conoscenza della macrolepidotterofauna della Sicilia nord-orientale e di caratterizzare la comunità presente nella Riserva Naturale Orientata “Laghetti di Marinello”. Sono stati effettuati 23 campionamenti tra dicembre 2007 e dicembre 2008 col metodo della caccia al lume. Sono stati catturati 2.537 individui appartenenti a 160 specie, tra cui Chloroclystis v-ata e Laelia coenosa, segnalate per la prima volta in Sicilia; importanti anche le segnalazioni di Calamodes subscudularia, Mythimna languida e M. joannisi, specie piuttosto rare e localizzate. Le specie più abbondanti sono state: Eilema caniola, Eublemma viridula, Idaea filicata, Dysauxes famula e Idaea seriata, che da sole rappresentano il 42% di tutta la comunità, favorite dalla presenza delle rispettive piante nutrici e dall’elevato adattamento alle condizioni climatiche del sito. Il numero di specie e i valori degli indici di diversità indicano un basso livello di biodiversità ospitata, ma la fenologia, le analisi corologica e autoecologica delle specie, insieme ai confronti effettuati con altre faune, indicano una comunità ben caratterizzata e peculiare, diretta espressione delle condizioni abiotiche e biotiche della Riserva.Abstract - Macroheterocera of the Oriented Natural Reserve “Laghetti di Marinello” (north-eastern Sicily) (Lepidoptera: Heterocera). The aim of this research is to contribute to the knowledge of the fauna of macrolepidoptera of north-eastern Sicily and to describe the community present in the Oriented Natural Reserve “Laghetti di Marinello”. 23 samples were carried out from December 2007 to December 2008 using a white vertical sheet reflecting a light source. 2.537 specimens belonging to 160 species were captured. Chloroclystis v-ata and Laelia coenosa were reported for the first time in Sicily, Calamodes subscudularia, Mythimna languida and M. joannisi, very rare and localized species, were also reported. The most abundant species were: Eilema caniola, Eublemma viridula, Idaea filicata, Dysauxes famula and Idaea seriata, which represent the 42% of the whole community and are favoured by the presence of their feeding plants and by their high adaptability to the climatic conditions of the place. The number of species and the values of the diversity indices show a low level of biodiversity, but phenology, chorological and autoecological analysis of the species, with comparisons made with other faunae, show a well characterized and peculiar community, direct expression of the abiotic and biotic conditions of the Reserve.

Meiofauna assemblages were investigated at 15 stations on triplicated samples in the Uvea Atoll (Loyalty Islands) in relation to 9 selected environmental parameters. Spatial patterns and variability of meiofauna density were quantified according to location, macrofauna and nematode species assemblages. Meiofauna was dominated by ciliates and nematodes. Densities of total meiofauna and of most of the meiofauna taxa were significantly higher in the back reef North Pléiades stations than the leeward side of the Island. The highest correlation between biotic patterns and environmental parameters that best explains the pattern was with sediment thickness and to a lesser extent organic matter, C/N ratio and depth. One hundred and thirty-four nematode species were identified with four dominant species Chromadora macrolaimoides, an undescribed species of Bolbonema, Daptonema svalbardense and Prochromadorella septempapillata. Three significantly different nematode species assemblages were detected in two of the previously described macrofauna assemblages by cluster analysis and multidimensional scaling methods suggesting that nematodes are more sensible ecological indicators than macrofauna. Diversity indices based on dominance were not significantly different among the three nematode species assemblages but indices based on species richness and rarefaction were significantly higher leeward of Uvea Island. Estimates of total species richness showed no sign of stabilizing with sample size. However, rare species stabilized very quickly, whereas abundant species were added with increasing sampling coverage, indicating a high spatial variability of the local composition of nematodes.

Macroalgal beds are recognised for their role as nursery and feeding grounds for several marine species. This study was conducted in the Tamandaré reef complex within the limits of the Costa dos Corais Marine Protected Area (MPA), North-eastern Brazil. The macroalgal bed studied is subjected to several disturbances, especially from tourism. The reef fish were assessed with free dives during the day and night using visual censuses within transects (20 × 2 m) and random swims. The percentage algal cover was estimated using quadrats (40 cm2). The behavioural traits of the fish also provided an understanding of their habitat use. In total, 68 fish species were recorded. The most abundant species were representatives of the families Labridae, Pomacentridae, Acanthuridae and Haemulidae. Sargassum polyceratium, Dictyopteris delicatula and Canistrocarpus cervicornis were the most abundant macroalgae. Because the most abundant fish trophic guild included primarily mobile invertebrate feeders (41.8%) and carnivores (28.4%), it is suggested that the high-canopy macroalgae harbour epiphytic invertebrates, which these fish use for food. Thereby, the study area would act as important nursery and feeding grounds. Tourism activity (e.g. laying chairs, trampling and anchoring) may disrupt fish behaviour and life- history traits and result in damage that would require mitigation through environmental awareness and law enforcement in the most affected areas.

Subdivided populations can be described by different models of population structure that reflect population organization, dynamics, and connectivity. We used genetic data to investigate population structure in two geographically sympatric, congeneric species of generalist ectoparasites of warm-blooded animals. We characterized the spatial genetic structure of the eastern bat bug (Cimex adjunctus Barber, 1939), an understudied and fairly abundant species, using microsatellite markers at a spatial scale representing contemporary dispersal of the species. We found seven genetic clusters, global [Formula: see text] of 0.2, 33% of genetic variation among sites, and nonsignificant isolation-by-distance. We compared these results with the common bed bug (Cimex lectularius L., 1758), a closely related but conversely well-known species, in the same geographic area. We found stronger genetic structuring in C. lectularius than in C. adjunctus, with 11 genetic clusters, [Formula: see text] of 0.7, 57% of genetic variation among sites, and significant but weak isolation-by-distance (R2 = 0.09). These results suggest that while both species can be described as having classic metapopulation structure, C. adjunctus leans more towards a patchy population and C. lectularius leans more towards a nonequilibrium metapopulation. The difference in population structure between these species may be attributable to differences in movement potential and extinction–colonization dynamics.

Seasonal variations of the ichthyoplankton assemblage and its relationship with the environment were analyzed based on four seasonal surveys during 2012. Historical data was collected to be compared with results from previous years in order to indicate the seasonal and inter-annual variation of the ichthyoplankton assemblage in the Yangtze Estuary and the adjacent waters. A total of 3,688 individuals belonging to 5 orders, 9 families, and 15 species were collected. No samples were collected in the winter cruise. In 2012, all samples were separated into four ecotypes, which is comparable with the historical data from previous years. The Engraulis japonicus was the most abundant species of all teleost fishes. The E. japonicus was captured in every season and contributed the most to the abundance of ichthyoplankton, which was greater than that of previous years. This result may be due to the periodic fluctuations of E. japonicus or from the displacement of spawning grounds offshore for environmental reasons. The diversity indices of the assemblage were significantly different among seasons, with the number and abundance of the species peaking in the spring, while richness, evenness and diversity indices peaked in the autumn. The species richness of the ichthyoplankton varied from 0.74 to 1.62, the Pielou evenness index varied from 0.10 to 0.49 and the Shannon–Wiener index varied from 0.19 to 1.04. The results of CCA analysis showed that the major factors affecting the ichthyoplankton assemblage differed throughout the seasons. Chla was the key factor affecting the ichthyoplankton in 2012. These seasonal and inter-annual variations likely resulted from migrations associated with fish spawning as well as the environment. Compared with data from previous studies, the relationship between the assemblage structure of ichthyoplankton and corresponding environmental variables have undergone a decline.

Aim: To investigate the influence of soil physico-chemical properties on diversity and density of Collembola in an undisturbed fallow land ecosystem. Methodology: Soil sampling was done at monthly intervals to explore the diversity, density and seasonal variation patterns of collembolan population in a fallow land ecosystem during March, 2015 to February, 2016. Collembolans were sampled using Tullgren funnel and identified by standard taxonomic keys. Finally, correlation studies were conducted to assess the influence of different soil physico-chemical properties on diversity and density of collembolans. Results: Five species of Collembola (Cyphoderus sp., Entomobrya sp., Isotoma sp., Folsomia sp. and Hypogastrura sp.) belonging to 4 families (Cyphoderidae, Entomobryidae, Isotomidae and Hypogastruridae) were identified. Cyphoderus sp. was recorded to be the most abundant species contributing 44.29 percent of population. Analysis of different diversity indices revealed higher diversity of collembolans during summer, indicating the presence of relatively stable habitats as compared to other seasons. Summer season also recorded highest density of Collembola. During all the seasons studied, a strong significant positive correlation (P<0.05 and P<0.01) of collembolan population was registered with soil moisture and organic carbon, respectively, however, remaining edaphic factors registered non-significant relationship with the collembolan density and diversity Interpretation: The study clearly indicated that the soil moisture and organic carbon content had a positive relationship with collembolan population and provides a relatively favourable ecological niche for their assemblages.

Rattan (Uay) is known for its commercial use such as furniture and handicrafts e.g. cabinets, bags, chairs, swings, and matting.    The study determined the species diversity of rattan (uay) in Danglas, Licuan- Baay, Lagayan, Dagiuoman, Tubo, and Villaviciosa, Abra, Philippines. The researcher had gone through a fieldwork for plant collection, identification and taxonomic classification using a dichotomous key and to assess the species diversity using biological diversity indices. Phytochemical analysis of the leaves, roots, stalk of rattan (uay) was done. Calamus merrilii, Calamus ornatus, Calamus microcarpus, and Calamus sp. are the identified species of rattan in the province of Abra. They have similar morphological characteristics but they differ in size and color of the vines, position of the thorns and spines in the plant body, and leaf sizes. Phytochemical contents of the stalk, roots, and leaves of rattan (uay) contain the most abundant medicinal properties. Biological diversity indices revealed that Calamus merrilii, Calamus ornatus, Calamus microcarpus, and Calamus sp. were most abundant species of rattan (uay) found in Tubo, Dagiuoman, Danglas, Lagayan and least diverse in Baay- Licuan. Lapat System was the conservation and preservation method of rattan (uay) in Tubo and Dagiouman, Danglas, Lagayan, Baay- Licuan and Villaviciosa.
