Sports Journalism: Self-Censorship, Ethics and Lived Experience in the Digital Era.

This thesis examines the major ethical issues experienced by UK sports journalists in the course of their practice in the modern digital media landscape, with a particular focus on selfcensorship. In tandem, it captures the lived professional experience of sports journalists in the digital era. My own professional experience is considered alongside the experiences of interviewees and diary-keepers. Initially, an exploratory case study of the work of investigative journalist David Walsh is used to highlight key ethical issues affecting sports journalism. A Kantian deontological theoretical perspective is articulated and developed. Qualitative approaches, specifically Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis and autoethnography, are then used to provide an original analysis of the research objectives, enhanced by philosophical analysis. Ten in-depth, semi-structured interviews are conducted with a homogeneous sample of UK sports journalists, while diaries kept by three different journalists provide another seam of data. Reflective logs of my own work as a sports journalist provide the basis for autoethnographic data. The main log runs for two-and-half years (2016- 19) with a separate additional log covering the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan. The semistructured interviews, diaries, autoethnography and case study are synthesized. The thesis explores how social media has introduced a host of ethical issues for sports journalists, not least the handling of abuse directed at them. Social media emerges as a double-edged sword. One of its most positive functions is to raise the standard of some journalists’ output due to the greater scrutiny that reporters feel they are under in the digital era, but at its worst it can be a platform for grotesque distortion and for corrupting sports journalists’ decision-making processes. Self-censorship of both facts and opinions emerges as a pervasive factor in sports journalism, a phenomenon that has been intensified by the advent of social media. Sports journalists show low engagement with codes of conduct, with the research suggesting that participants are on occasion more readily influenced by self-policing dynamics. This project captures vividly sports journalists’ personal involvement and emotional investment in their work, and reconsiders the ‘toy department’-versus-watchdog classification of sports journalists. The thesis concludes with recommendations for industry, including the introduction of formal support for sports journalists affected by online abuse.

This study will discusses about the personal branding of the influencers (@Kimdarlings) through Instagram. Nowadays, media focuses on the existence of users by facilitating them in their activities. As for the development of the digital era, social media is used as medium for disseminating information. This led to innovation, like influencers who did their branding through social media. This study aims to determine how the formation of personal branding is used by (@Kimdarlings) as K-Pop Influencer through social media Instagram. This study used the concepts of personal branding, influencers and social media. In this research used a descriptive qualitative approach with the case study method. The findings are the formation of @Kimdarlings personal branding has seven personal branding concepts including specialization (@Kimdarlings as K-Pop enthusiasts has only been a fan of one fandom), personality (character building as a splashy or cheerful person on Instagram), differences (fangirling contents as a differentiation from other influencers), visible (@Kimdarlings consistency of doing cover dance from Korean boybands and girl bands publicly and continuously), unity (the personal life of @Kimdarlings work in line with the brand she formed), persistence (based on her principle,she only uploading contents about K-Pop), and goodwill (giving a positive image to her followers).Penelitian ini membahas personal branding influencer (@Kimdarlings) melalui Instagram. Sekarang ini, media memfokuskan pada eksistensi pengguna dengan memfasilitasi mereka dalam beraktivitas. Seiring perkembangan era digital, media sosial dimanfaatkan sebagai media penyebaran informasi. Hal ini memunculkan inovasi yaituinfluencer yang melakukan branding melalui Instagram. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui bagaimana pembentukan personal branding yang digunakan oleh (@Kimdarlings) sebagai K-Pop Influencer melalui media sosial Instagram. Konsep yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah konsep personal branding, influencer, media sosial. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah pendekatan kualitatif jenis deskriptif dengan metode studi kasus. Hasil temuan bahwa pembentukan personal branding@Kimdarlings sebagai K-Pop influencer melalui Instagram memiliki Tujuh konseppersonal branding tersebut adalah spesialisasi (@Kimdarlings sebagai penyuka K-Pophanya menggemari satu fandom), kepribadian (pembentukan karakter di Instagram yang heboh atau ceria), perbedaan (konten fangirling yang berbeda dengan influencer lainnya), terlihat (@Kimdarlings konsisten melakukan cover dance dari boyband dan girlband Korea secara publik dan secara terus menerus), kesatuan (kehidupan pribadi yang @Kimdarlings bentuk sejalan dengan brand yang dibentuknya), keteguhan (berpegang teguh pada prinsip bahwa ia hanya akan mengunggah konten tentang K-Pop), dan nama baik (memberikan citra positif bagi pengikutnya).

Humans are social beings who need other individuals to group. In interacting with others, individuals will convey information and usually begin with an introduction relates to self disclosure, which is the type of individual communication disclosing information about himself is commonly concealed. Social media is a medium on the Internet that allows users to represent themselves, share, communicate with others and create virtual social ties. This research was intended to examine Instagram and Self Disclosure in an interpersonal communication perspective on the Santo Kristoforus II high school students to find out the activities of students on Instagram social media. Research based on Self-Disclosure theory, communication theory in the Digital Era, social media, and Instagram. Research uses a qualitative approach with case study methods. The results is that the self disclosure conducted by the informant is about daily activities, and the self disclosure is on Instagram involving several Self-Disclosure processes. In the process of Self-Disclosure, informants usually provide personal information such as feelings, thoughts and experiences, and they are also careful enough in uploading information to social mediaManusia disebut makhluk yang memerlukan seseorang untuk saling berhubungan timbal balik. Dalam berinteraksi dengan orang lain, individu akan menyampaikan berbagai informasi dan biasanya diawali dengan perkenalan mengenai dirinya, hal tersebut berkaitan dengan self disclosure, yakni jenis komunikasi individu mengungkapkan informasi tentang dirinya sendiri yang biasa disembunyikan. Media sosial saat ini digunakan penggunanya untuk berkomunikasi, membentuk relasi dengan orang lain secara virtual. Sehingga penelitian ini dimaksudkan untuk meneliti Instagram dan Self Disclosure dalam Perspektif Komunikasi Antarpribadi terhadap Siswa-Siswi SMA Santo Kristoforus II untuk mengetahui aktivitas siswa-siswi di media sosial Instagram. Penelitian berlandaskan teori Self-Disclosure, Teori Komunikasi di Era Digital, Media Sosial, dan Instagram. Penelitian menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode studi kasus. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pengungkapan diri yang dilakukan oleh informan berisi tentang aktivitas sehari-hari yang dilakukan, dan pengungkapan diri tersebut dilakukan dalam media sosial Instagram yang melibatkan beberapa proses pengungkapan diri. Dalam proses pengungkapan diri, informan biasanya memberikan informasi pribadi seperti perasaan, pikiran dan pengalaman. Dengan banyaknya informasi yang diberikan, tidak menutup kemungkinan mereka juga cukup berhati-hati dalam mengunggah informasi ke media sosial

This study explores the phenomenon of Vlogger as a new business in the digital media industry in Indonesia. Vlogger refer to social media users who regularly upload a variety of video content with various themes. We used case study to describe and analyze Youtube’s significant role in managing Vlogger communities, and also design support systems to make the communities growth and sustainable. We also explore Vlogger role as Online Influencer. This study is expected to be one of the references related to Vlogger phenomenon in the context of digital media studies in Indonesia.

Today's world is technology-driven. Technology has penetrated almost every sphere of human life. Digital marking is one of the technologies that have attracted people from different age groups all over the world with their advanced nature of applications and uses. One of the foremost reasons why patrons like to use this technology is because these are not only user-friendly in nature and innovativeness but also carry the knowledge economies. Marketing and branding through digital media channels are very decent ventures that have steadily increased in value and are thereby considered safe and secure investments. Digital technology is at the forefront of transforming how governments operate around the world. Using Brunei's Information Department (InfoDept) as a case study, this chapter looks at how the agency has evolved from its inception in the 1950s to 2019 in its embrace of both old and new media to pursue its mission and objectives as a government-run media agency. The results demonstrate how new media, such as social media, can complement old media if done right. The case study on InfoDept contributes to the growing field of research related to the increased advancement, development, application, and impact of new technologies in bolstering the digital governance process. This chapter also provides strong evidence on how governments can improve its general governance process and unlock the digital dividend in the 21st century by incorporating new media into its public policy architectonic. Salient lessons for policymakers and practitioners on digital governance have also been presented in this chapter.

This article explores how Twitter has emerged as a signifier of contemporary protest. Using the concept of ‘social media imaginaries’, a derivative of the broader field of ‘media imaginaries’, our analysis seeks to offer new insights into activists’ relation to and conceptualisation of social media and how it shapes their digital media practices. Extending the concept of media imaginaries to include analysis of protestors’ use of aesthetics, it aims to unpick how a particular ‘social media imaginary’ is constructed and informs their collective identity. Using the Gezi Park protest of 2013 as a case study, it illustrates how social media became a symbolic part of the protest movement by providing the visualised possibility of imagining the movement. In previous research, the main emphasis has been given to the functionality of social media as a means of information sharing and a tool for protest organisation. This article seeks to redress this by directing our attention to the role of visual communication in online protest expressions and thus also illustrates the role of visual analysis in social movement studies.

This essay offers a close reading of Barry Levinson’s Wag the dog (New Line Cinema, 1997) in order to discuss a series of issues pertaining to the relation of cinema and reality in the digital era. Wag the Dog functions as an exemplary case study wherein the pro-filmic, the filmic, and the post-filmic events illustrate the complex interactions of the cinema/reality in this new phase of digital ontology. This essay follows the evolving nature of terms and concepts, such as analog and digital inscriptions, reference, indexicality, and fiction and nonfiction discourse while it traces the intricate interactions between film and reality in the current media-saturated social reality.

The purpose of this research is to assess user engagement for a video-based social media campaign by a destination marketing organization (DMO). A case study methodology was applied to examine the Tourism Toronto video-based campaign of 2017 on Instagram and Twitter. Social interactions were analyzed to compare the relative engagement rates across platforms. This determined that Instagram had a higher relative engagement rate compared to Twitter. Instagram can be considered as a more desirable tool for DMOs to share videos digitally. The limited sample size presents research limitations through potentially not representing a larger population opinion’s on the content. It enables practical implications for destination marketers who have limited resources by highlighting that Instagram may be a preferred channel over Twitter due to higher engagements rates. There is a lack of research on the comparison of relative engagement rates from an academic perspective and this is the first study to explore the topic for a video-based marketing campaign in the DMO industry.

The sustainability of industrial business depends on the ability of organizations to manage the needs and desires of consumers so that the products produced become part of consumer life. The radio broadcast industry in the era of digital technology is threatened no longer able to meet the needs of its listeners because social media has changed the behavior of audiences in consuming radio media. on that basis the radio broadcast industry must adapt to managing radio broadcasts by synergizing the behavior of the use of digital media with radio characters that are personal to the audience so that the radio broadcast industry continues to survive. The purpose of this study was to determine the management of social media and identify the added value it generates to maintain the business continuity of radio broadcast programs, especially Iradio 89.6 FM. The related concept is digital media management, product added value for business continuity. The research method used is a case study with a qualitative approach with the support of data triangulation so that the analysis can meet the validity aspects of the data. The results showed that the management was carried out with a strategy to build emotional bounding audiences through social media by synergizing digital technology with broadcast radio-based programming content. This helps the business continuity of IRadio 89.6 FM significantly. The existence of digital media for the radio industry is as a complement rather than as a competitor and digital media makes radio easier to access from various areas

Due to the popularity of social media, researchers are increasingly conducting studies that monitor and analyze people’s health-related social media conversations. Because social media users can post about any topic at any time, no known best ethical practices exist as to whether and how to monitor participants’ posts for safety-related issues that might be unrelated to the study, such as expressions of suicidal intentions. This is a case study during a social media-based study on sleep and activity among freshman undergraduate students, where we by chance noticed that a student was using social media to express suicidal intentions. Although we connected the student to student psychological services in order to receive treatment, we encountered a number of barriers that initially prevented this from occurring, such as institutional review board and regulatory practices related to lack of experience with these newer types of studies. We discuss the implications of this experience for future research.
