One of the major problems facing the food industry is the oxidation of fats and oils, which results in the formation of free radicals. Free radicals cause diseases such as cancer, premature aging and atherosclerosis, and in addition to endangering consumer health, they reduce the nutritional and digestive value of foods. One of the most effective ways to delay lipid oxidation is the use of antioxidants. Natural antioxidants, such as herbal extracts, are an abundant and remarkable source of polyphenolic compounds that have high antioxidant capacity and can be a good alternative to synthetic antioxidants in the food system. Since plant extracts are highly active compounds, they may lose their beneficial effects due to exposure to oxygen or nutrients. Therefore, it is necessary to use methods to protect them in order to achieve the highest antioxidant activity. So, using nano-encapsulation these problems will be partially solved. This paper will review the oxidative of vegetable oils and ways to combat them.

Theoretical framework: Vegetable oils in the cosmetics market are gaining more and more notoriety because they contain mainly antioxidants as bioactive substances. Free radicals are one of the main responsible for skin aging, which is characterized by the set of inevitable changes that occur progressively in our body and is classified as intrinsic and extrinsic aging, leading to visual changes in both the epidermis and dermis due to the decrease in fibers collagen, elastic and glycosaminoglycans. Although it is currently impossible to prevent or reverse genetic processes of intrinsic aging, the changes caused by free radicals that trigger extrinsic aging can be prevented naturally with the use of oil-based cosmeceuticals. Objective: To review studies in the literature on the use of vegetable oils to prevent skin aging. Material and Methods: A qualitative review of the narrative-type literature was carried out, consulting scientific articles indexed in the electronic databases, SCIENCE DIRECT, SciELO, LILACS, MedLine and PubMed. Results: A current trend in the market for increasingly safer, biocompatible and effective cosmetics is to combine vegetable oils with antioxidant characteristics with other natural and / or synthetic actives in order to provide different functions and associated effects, such as combating premature aging and provide elasticity, firmness, hydration, among other benefits. Conclusion: Brazil has become a primordial country due to the abundance of natural resources in its forest, offering plant ingredients made up of bioactive compounds to the world scenario that work to combat the damage caused by free radicals.

Skin constantly exposed by the environmental stresses, such as pollutants, solar radiation, heat, and cold, which cause the free radicals that cause premature aging. This bad effects of free radicals can be reduced by natural antioxidants such as Beluntas china (Gynura pseudochina (L.) DC) extract. The antioxidants use of beluntas china extract for skin will be more optimal if it is applied by appropriate form, emulgel, which has stronger consistency and longer contact time than gel. The aim of this research was to formulate an antioxidant emulgel from beluntas china extract, which is effective, stable, and safe with the best gelling agent. The extract was formulated by variety types of gelling agents which were carrageenan, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), and carbomer 934. Then, the physical stability was evaluated, including organoleptic, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, and freeze thaw. The results showed that formulation of carbomer 934 1% 2xIC50 extract concentration give the best physical stability evaluation for 60 days storage time.Keywords: antioxidant, beluntas china extract, emulgel, free radicals, skin

The predominance of synthetic and genetically modified foods in the diet of a modern person often leads to disruption of natural metabolic processes and the accumulation of toxic free radicals in the body, which provokes the development of various diseases. Natural antioxidants from medicinal plants can help maintain health and stop the processes of peroxidation. In our opinion, Аstragalus onobrychis can become a promising source of natural antioxidants. The aim of this study was to establish the antioxidant activity in extracts from the herb Astragalus onobrychis. In order to obtain objective and reliable results during our research, we used two methods: the method of titrimetry and spectrophotometry of free radicals. The titrimetric method is based on the chemical interaction between an oxidizing agent (potassium permanganate) and natural antioxidants present in extracts from plant raw materials, since they exhibit the properties of reducing agents. The spectrophotometric method makes it possible to assess the value of antioxidant activity and the duration of the reaction by assessing the interaction of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazil with plant antioxidants. To establish the relationship between the antioxidant activity and the presence of phenolic compounds in the plant, the content of flavonoids and hydroxycinnamic acids in the herb Astragalus onobrychis was determined. As a result of the studies, the total antioxidant activity of extracts from the herb Astragalus onobrychis was established and it was revealed that its value depends on the type of extractant used, since this factor is associated with the content of various groups of natural antioxidants in the extraction. The data obtained indicate the prospects of using the herb Astragalus onobrychis as a source of natural antioxidants.

Cyanidin and its O-glycosides have many important physiological functions in plants and beneficial effects on human health. Their biological activity is not entirely clear and depends on the structure of the molecule, in particular, on the number and type of sugar substituents. Therefore, in this study the detailed structure-activity relationship (SARs) of the anthocyanins/anthocyanidins in relation to their interactions with lipid bilayer was determined. On the basis of their antioxidant activity and the changes induced by them in size and Zeta potential of lipid vesicles, and mobility and order of lipid acyl chains, the impact of the number and type of sugar substituents on the biological activity of the compounds was evaluated. The obtained results have shown, that 3-O-glycosylation changes the interaction of cyanidin with lipid bilayer entirely. The 3-O-glycosides containing a monosaccharide induces greater changes in physical properties of the lipid membrane than those containing disaccharides. The presence of additional sugar significantly reduces glycoside interaction with model lipid membrane. Furthermore, O-glycosylation alters the ability of cyanidin to scavenge free radicals. This alteration depends on the type of free radicals and the sensitivity of the method used for their determination.

Background: There exist natural antioxidants in plants that scavenge harmful free radicals from the body. Free radicals are species of chemical origin with an unpaired electron and play a pivotal role in combating against health-related problems like lung damage, inflammation, and cardiovascular ailments etc. Antioxidants halt the development of these free radicals called the reactive oxygen species either by chelating the trace elements or by enzymes inhibition. Objectives: The aim of present review was to collect information about Pakistani medicinally important plants with the exploration of their antioxidant potential. Methodology: Total 206 papers were looked over, which were obtained from numerous sources like; Google Scholar, Medline, PubMed, Research Gate, Science Direct, Scopus and Web of Science. Results: Overall, 93 plants representing 44 families with potential antioxidant activity reported from Pakistan have been presented in this review. Maximum number of species from Asteracea, Poaceae and Rutaceae familes were scrutinized for their potential antioxidant activity from Pakistan. Conclusion: The present review clearly designates that the presence of phytochemicals and antioxidant activity of medicinal plants from Pakistan vary with the species of the plants and material/extracts used. From this review, it is recommended to perform comprehensive experimental investigations based on toxicology and ethnopharmacology on these precious plants from Pakistan. It will be advantageous in the provision of trustworthy information to patients and determine further innovative compounds for safer and new drugs development with fewer side effects.

In this work, routinely measured physicochemical indices and lipid profiling of oil extracted from spent coffee grounds (SCG) were evaluated to assess the suitability of SCG as a new candidate for oil production. The obtained results reveal that the oil yield was 18.55±1.5 g/100g. Physicochemical indices were comparable to those of widely consumed vegetable oils in the range set in several studies. The main fatty acids of SCG oil were linoleic acid 43.20±2.19 g/100g, palmitic acid 31.78±2.02 g/100g, and oleic acid 12.68±1.15 g/100g dry basis. For sterol composition, β-sitosterol was the most abundant sterol (44.70±0.01%), followed by stigmasterol (27.57±0.01%) and campesterol (12.16±0.01%). In conclusion, this composition is typical for many other vegetable oils. Therefore, this oil may be considered a good alternative for vegetable oil production for new multi-purpose products such as cosmetic and industrial pharmaceutical uses.

Beer is one of the most consumed drinks around the world, containing a variety of compounds that offer both appreciated sensorial characteristics and health advantages. Important healthy compounds in beer are those with antioxidant properties that attenuate the content of free radicals produced as by-products in the human metabolism, exerting an appreciable effect against cancers or cardiovascular diseases. This work details a study of antioxidant compounds present in beer, focusing on the two main groups: phenols (including polyphenolic forms) and melanoidins, formed specifically during brewing as Maillard products. The fundaments of the most important methods to evaluate beer antioxidant activity, the main antioxidant compounds present in beer—especially those with healthy properties—and the new trends to increase beer antioxidant activity are also discussed.

The zero-waste biorefinery concept inspired a green oleo-extraction of both natural volatile (e.g., borneol, camphor, o-cymene, eucalyptol, limonene, α-pinene, and terpinen-4-ol) and non-volatile (e.g., carnosol, carnosic, and rosmarinic acid) bioactive compounds from rosemary leaves with vegetable oils and their amphiphilic derivatives as simple food-grade solvents. It is noteworthy that soybean oil could obtain the highest total phenolic compounds (TPCs) among 12 refined oils including grapeseed, rapeseed, peanut, sunflower, olive, avocado, almond, apricot, corn, wheat germ, and hazelnut oils. Furthermore, the addition of oil derivatives to soybean oils, such as glyceryl monooleate (GMO), glyceryl monostearate (GMS), diglycerides, and soy lecithin in particular, could not only significantly enhance the oleo-extraction of non-volatile antioxidants by 66.7% approximately, but also help to remarkably improve the solvation of volatile aroma compounds (VACs) by 16% in refined soybean oils. These experimental results were in good consistency with their relative solubilities predicted by the more sophisticated COSMO-RS (COnductor like Screening MOdel for Real Solvents) simulation. This simple procedure of using vegetable oils and their derivatives as bio-based solvents for simultaneously improving the extraction yield of natural antioxidants and flavors from rosemary showed its great potential in up-scaling with the integration of green techniques (ultrasound, microwave, etc.) for zero-waste biorefinery from biomass waste to high value-added extracts in future functional food and cosmetic applications.
