This article is an analysis from a feminist perspective of the two Romanian translations of Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale. By adopting Antoine Berman’s three pronged model of translation criticism, I attempt to identify several differences between the translations. Therefore, it will prove pertinent to see whether the translators adhere to the author’s style, are faithful to the tone, imagery, wordplay and ludic nature of the text, if they prefer to steer clear of more adventurous translation strategies and opt for a source-oriented translation, keeping to the initial structure and employing mostly syntactic strategies. Another important element that surfaces and plays a paramount role is that of the translator’s visibility, more precisely those instances wherein she makes her voice known, be it through an explanatory footnote or, perhaps, a translator’s gloss at the end of the translated text. The translators’ own backgrounds are relevant in the case at hand as well, as their experience and formation influence their preferences for a certain style and translation strategies

The study analyzes lexemes and word combinations of colloquial style, slang and low colloquial language, performs their comparative analysis at word level, looks into the transformational patterns that the structures undergo during literary translation into English and Russian, and discusses the advantages and flaws of the applied translation strategies through suggesting adequate translation solutions. In the article, the argument is made that the translation strategies of substandard lexis reflect the interdisciplinary nature of expressive meaning and connotation which can be conveyed differently through various language levels during literary translation.

The expansion of international contacts and integration policy of Russian mainstream the question of development of linguistic grounds for effective interlingual communication, thus special attention is given to the problem of building nominative field of frame-scenario of linguo-legal convergence as a type of linguocultural concept, which main purpose consists in systematization and substantiation of a set of translation strategies. Based on the analysis of the models of representation of knowledge, it would contain the results of identification of national-cultural and mental specifics of language structures. Multi-aspect examination of the problems of legal translation justifies utilization of complex methodology that includes linguo-legal, linguo-culturological and comparative analysis. The author also applies statistical, comparative-legal and comparative methods in studying the foreign practice, scientific works, business documentation, which allow formulating and introducing recommendations aimed and increasing effectiveness and optimization of activity in the indicated sphere. The conclusion is made that the frame-scenario may significantly assist in translation of contracts as a results of time-consuming and detailed work of the translators-interpreters, which would integrate the ontological properties of the meaning of text. The author determines the key trajectories of cognitive study of linguo-legal convergence in the foreign trade discourse.

This article provides a comparative analysis of translation strategies for the English titles of Oscar-winning movies (Academy Award for Best Picture) into Polish, German and Russian. The titles analyzed show two strategies: adaptation and exotisation. However, they did not show a clear connection between the translation strategy and the degree of linguistic similarity since there was no clear dominance of exotisation in the German versions, considered to be the closest to the original. A significant use of explication of the meaning of the title in German versions was observed, which may indicate an attempt to more accurately convey basic information about a foreign movie to a German viewer.

Przypadek Domowych duchów Dubravki UgrešićNiniejszy artykuł poświęcony jest przekładowi na język polski zbioru opowiadań Dubravki Ugrešić pt. Domowe duchy.

This study of the translation strategies for Romeo and Juliet heavily relies on two aspects concerning the play’s genre complexity: the lyrical plot (drawing on the poetic fashions of the 1590s), and the comical carnival element, imbued with a Shakespearean London idiom. The process of the Russian adaptation of Shakespearian imagery was lengthy and fraught with difficulties, not only due to the play’s linguistic complexity, but because of differences in treatment of higher matters (here, poetry) and social and everyday realities. The paper discusses the first Russian translation of Romeo and Juliet, penned by Ivan Roskovshenko. The study focuses on discovering the ways in which the play’s Petrarchian stylistics transforms in the Russian interpretation. A detailed comparative analysis of the translation and its original suggests that I. Roskovshenko consistently replaced the rhetorical conventions of the 16th century with the patterns of contemporary Russian poetry, domesticating the Shakespearian text. The approach only paid off when the images of English Petrarchism, interspersing Romeo and Juliet, resonated with the Russian poetry of the early 1800s.

This chapter offers a feminist critique of the strategies used in translating Virginia Woolf’s work into Arabic. The study examines the representation of Woolf in Egypt and the Arab World, detailing the shift from emphasis on Woolf as a modernist novelist to a feminist writer. It begins with a historical overview of Woolf’s works translated into Arabic since the 1960s, followed by a discussion of the critical approaches to the translated texts from a feminist perspective, with particular emphasis on the significance of a paratextual analysis. The last section is devoted to examining A Room of One’s Own (1929) as a case study of the translation of Woolf into Arabic. With the increasing relevance of feminism and translation studies, how to embody female discourse in translation has become an important issue in feminist translation and in reflecting the translator’s subjectivity. Based on the feminist translation theory, this study will explore how female translators use translation strategies and methods to highlight female discourse through a comparative analysis of the two Chinese versions of To the Lighthouse, aiming to reveal the differences between female’s translation and male’s as a result of their gender consciousness, thus bringing beneficial inspiration to translation studies and translation work.

Translating literary proper names is regarded as one of the challenging but inspiring issues in the field of Translation Studies. Given this context, the present paper aims to analyze the strategies undertaken by the translator when rendering proper names from the English literary text “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” (2014) into its Vietnamese translation “Harry Potter và Hòn đá phù thuỷ” (2016). To fulfill the research purpose, a descriptive and comparative analysis was made between the source and target text. The analysis of translation strategies was grounded on the theoretical frame of Davis (2003). The findings reveal that the translator adopted the strategy of preservation for most of the proper names in the chosen literary text. Several recommendations for translating proper names in the literary texts are finally drawn out.

Currently, a specific mathematical apparatus and methods of mathematical modeling are used to evaluate and verify translations. The theory is just developing and in this article we will show the application of modeling methods on a specific example of studying toponyms. The article is devoted to the consideration of the problem of using toponyms with the connotation inherent in biblicalism in translations of poetic works of the Ukrainian writer I. Franko. A comparative analysis of Russian and English translations clearly shows the discrepancies in the choice of translation strategies that were used in relation to these onyms by Russian and English translators. An attempt to evaluate the quantitative aspect of the comparative analysis of the work of I. Franko in the translation by D. Brodsky, V. Azarov, V. Rich, V. Semenin, P. Dyatlov, P. Kandy and B. Melnik was identified as a research task.
