The authors of the article, through the prism of the formation of Islamic identity in traditional Islamic society, try to identify the main cultural, philosophical and religious concepts of the phenomenon of Islamic identity. The 21st century is becoming a century of global changes. The world of Islam and the world around Islam are changing. Wars, revolutions in the Islamic world, mass migrations of Muslims to Western Europe, the promotion of radicalism, terrorism, the development of a zero degree of tolerance in open societies, inter-confessional and intra-confessional intolerance once again served to open up in the humanities the problem of modernizing Islamic consciousness, Islamic philosophical and cultural thought, and also the main issues of the relationship between Islamic tradition and modern conditions. Islamic identity as the main component of the Islamic worldview today must be correlated with the new conditions of political, socio-economic and cultural transformation. Nevertheless, for an adequate understanding and knowledge of Islamic identity, it is important to conceptualize its foundations associated with the religion of Islam itself and the Islamic tradition. Islamic consolidation around the Islamic system of values forms the Muslim ummah, which is one of the main components of Muslim self-identification.

Paleontological location of the Pleistocene fauna of hairy rhinos and mammoths near the village. Starunya Bogorodchany district of Ivano-Frankivsk region (Prykarpathian, Ukraine) is considered as a paleoclimatic rapper of global changes and a stratigraphic "bridge" linking stratigraphic patterns of the Upper Pleistocene of Western Europe and the plain territory of Ukraine. This is important for the reconstruction of global climate change and the transformation of natural and man-made geosystems.

This chapter charts the development of the theory of occasionalism within the Islamic tradition until the fifth/eleventh century. Occasionalism emphasizes God’s absolute power by negating natural causality and attributing every causal effect in the world immediately to Him. It is often assumed to be a distinctive, if not exclusive, feature of Sunnīkalāmas opposed to Muʿtazilism, Shīʿism, and Islamic philosophy. The chapter begins with the question of how the foundations of the occasionalist theory were prepared in the evolving Muʿtazilī discussions of the third/ninth and early fourth/tenth century. It then considers the role of Abū l-Ḥasan al-Ashʿarī in the completion and final formulation of the theory before turning to later developments originating with some Ashʿarī theologians of the late fourth/tenth and the fifth/eleventh century. It also looks at the seventeenth chapter ofTahāfut al-falāsifa, in which Abū Ḥāmid al-Ghazālī (d. 505/1111) discusses occasionalism and the problematic of causality.

Most recent data confirm that in the OECD area as a whole the fall in output in the second quarter of last year and the flattening out in the third quarter were followed by renewed growth in the fourth quarter. All the main components of final domestic demand contributed and, though fixed investment remained below the first quarter level (table 1), both private and public consumption may well have exceeded this. In Western Europe, however, industrial production declined further in both the third and fourth quarters and any recovery by the end of the year appears to have been no more than marginal even for GDP.

Abstract Culture shapes our basic sensory experience of the world. This is particularly striking in the study of religion and psychosis, where we and others have shown that cultural context determines both the structure and content of hallucination-like events. The cultural shaping of hallucinations may provide a rich case-study for linking cultural learning with emerging prediction-based models of perception.

SummaryAs a terror tactic, suicide terrorism is one of the most lethal as it relies on a human being to deliver and detonate the device. Suicide terrorism is not confined to a single region or religion. On the contrary, it has a global appeal, and in countries such as Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan it has come to represent an almost daily reality as it has become the weapon of choice for some of the most dreaded terrorist organizations in the world, such as ISIS and al-Qaeda. Drawing on over two decades of extensive field research in five distinct world regions, specifically the Middle East, Western Europe, North America, Russia, and the Balkans, the author discusses the origins of modern day suicide terrorism, motivational factors behind suicide terrorism, its global migration, and its appeal to modern-day terrorist groups to embrace it as a tactic.

This paper examines the trajectory of growth in the Global South. Before the 1500s all countries were roughly at the same level of development, but from the 1500s Western countries started to grow faster than the rest of the world and PPP GDP per capita by 1950 in the US, the richest Western nation, was nearly 5 times higher than the world average and 2 times higher than in Western Europe. Since 1950 this ratio stabilized - not only Western Europe and Japan improved their relative standing in per capita income versus the US, but also East Asia, South Asia and some developing countries in other regions started to bridge the gap with the West. After nearly half of the millennium of growing economic divergence, the world seems to have entered the era of convergence. The factors behind these trends are analyzed; implications for the future and possible scenarios are considered.
