The science of Falak is basically divided into two types, namely the science of Falak Ilmiy, and the science of Falak Amaliy. The science of Falak discussing the direction of Qibla is basically calculating the amount of angles flanked by meridian lines that pass through a place that is called the Qibla direction with a large circle passing through the relevant place and the Kaaba, and calculating what time the sun cuts the path to the Kaaba. The problem that arises is not everyone is able to calculate the correct direction about the Qibla direction but instead uses a range of directions. It is possible to make an application program for determining the direction of Qibla and others so that it can be used for the general public and is easy to apply. This research helps how to calculate the direction of Qibla and how to make and apply the software of Qibla direction determination using visual basic. The results of this study can be used as a reference in solving various cases of physical analysis in various aspects related to other astronomy.

The sun navigation of honey bees has been investigated in a region of the southern hemisphere where the sun was moving counter-clockwise during the observations. Foragers from a strain long established in the region were fed in the evening on a dish in a particular geographical direction and transferred overnight to a new locality unknown to them. During the next day the majority of bees were at all hours searching in the direction of their previous training. Foragers which were the offspring of queens recently improted in an inseminated state from the northern hemisphere showed after similar training systematically false orientation on the day of observation. The direction of their search shifted by about 30° per hour counter-clockwise from a direction about 90° clockwise from the training direction in the morning to the correct direction in the evening. Bees of hybrid (local and imported) origin also showed false orientation. The existence of innate mechanisms is postulated compensating in northern bees for the sun's clockwise movements and in southern bees for the counter-clockwise movement of the sun. The change in the direction of compensation must have occurred during the last 425 years, and a possible mode of this evolutionary process is discussed.

The return of Halley's Comet in May of this year gave rise to much speculation as to its possible effects on the earth. As it was expected that the earth would pass through the tail of the comet when the comet passed between us and the sun, many observations were arranged for in order to see if the tail, whatever it was composed of, had any effect on the earth or on its atmosphere. If the tail was composed of matter in any form, gaseous, or fine solid or liquid particles, then it seemed possible to get some evidence of its presence in the atmosphere; or if the tail was composed of electrons, then these would disturb the electrical condition of the atmosphere, and also the magnetic condition of the earth.

The perturbations of the planets is the subject of reiterated researches by all the great geometers who have raised up Physical Astronomy to its present elevation. They have been successful in determining the variations which the elements of the orbit of a disturbed planet undergo; and in expressing these variations analytically, in the manner best adapted for computation. But the inquirer who turns his attention to this branch of study will find that it is made to depend upon a theory in mechanics, which is one of considerable analytical intricacy, known by the name of the Variation of the Arbitrary Constants. Considerations similar to those employed in this theory were found necessary in Physical Astronomy from its origin; but the genius of Lagrange imagined and completed the analytical processes of general application. In a dynamical problem which is capable of an exact solution, such as a planet revolving by the central attraction of the sun, the formulas constructed by Lagrange enable us to ascertain the alterations that will be induced on the original motions of the body, if we suppose it urged by new and very small forces, such as the irregular attractions of the other bodies of the planetary system. General views of this nature are very valuable, and contribute greatly to the advancement of science. But their application is sometimes attended with inconvenience. In particular cases, the general structure of the formulas may require a long train of calculation, in order to extricate the values of the quantities sought. It may be necessary for attaining this end to pass through many differential equations, and to submit to much subordinate calculation. The remedy for this inconvenience seems to lie in separating the general principles from the analytical processes by which they are carried into effect. In some important problems, a great advantage, both in brevity and clearness, will be obtained by adapting the investigation to the particular circumstance of the case, and attending solely to the principles of the method in deducing the solution. It may therefore become a question whether it be not possible to simplify physical astronomy by calling in the aid only of the usual principles of dynamics, and by setting aside every formula or equation not absolutely necessary for arriving at the final results. The utility of such an attempt, if successful, can hardly be doubted. By rendering more accessible a subject of great interest and importance, the study of English mathematicians may be recalled to a theory which, although it originated in England, has not received the attention it deserves, and which it has met with in foreign countries. The paper which I have the honour to submit to the Royal Society, contains a complete determination of the variable elements of the elliptic orbit of a disturbed planet, deduced from three differential equations that follow readily from the mechanical conditions of the problem. In applying these equations, the procedure is the same whether a planet is urged by the sole action of the central force of the sun, or is besides disturbed by the attraction of other bodies revolving about that luminary; the only difference being that, in the first case, the elements of the orbit are all constant, whereas in the other case they are all variable. The success of the method here followed is derived from a new differential equation between the time and the area described by the planet in its momentary plane, which greatly shortens the investigation by making it unnecessary to consider the projection of the orbit. But the solution in this paper, although no reference is made to the analytical formulas of the theory of the variation of the arbitrary constants, is no less an application of that method, and an example of its utility and of the necessity of employing it in very complicated problems.

Abstract. It is well known that most MHD shocks observed within 1 AU are MHD fast shocks. Only a very limited number of MHD slow shocks are observed within 1 AU. In order to understand why there are only a few MHD slow shocks observed within 1 AU, we use a one-dimensional, time-dependent MHD code with an adaptive grid to study the generation and evolution of interplanetary slow shocks (ISS) in the solar wind. Results show that a negative, nearly square-wave perturbation will generate a pair of slow shocks (a forward and a reverse slow shock). In addition, the forward and the reverse slow shocks can pass through each other without destroying their characteristics, but the propagating speeds for both shocks are decreased. A positive, square-wave perturbation will generate both slow and fast shocks. When a forward slow shock (FSS) propagates behind a forward fast shock (FFS), the former experiences a decreasing Mach number. In addition, the FSS always disappears within a distance of 150R⊙ (where R⊙ is one solar radius) from the Sun when there is a forward fast shock (with Mach number ≥1.7) propagating in front of the FSS. In all tests that we have performed, we have not discovered that the FSS (or reverse slow shock) evolves into a FFS (or reverse fast shock). Thus, we do not confirm the FSS-FFS evolution as suggested by Whang (1987).

When the air is very cold, water at the surface of the ocean freezes, forming sea ice. Parts of the Arctic Ocean are covered by sea ice during the entire year. Often, snow falls onto the sea ice. Despite the cold, many plants and animals can live in the Arctic Ocean, some in the water, and some even in the sea ice. Particularly, algae can live in small bubbles in the sea ice. Like other plants, algae need energy to grow. This energy comes from food and sunlight. But how can the sunlight reach these little algae living inside the sea ice? From the sun, the light must pass through the atmosphere, the snow, and finally the sea ice itself. In this article, we describe how ice algae can live in this special environment and we explain what influences how much light reaches the algae to make them grow.

Companies engaged in the chemical industry really need Human Resources (HR) who have knowledge in the field of chemical industry engineering terms in order to achieve the company's main goals, but due to the chemical industry engineering terms that use foreign languages is essentially difficult to understand not a few of the general public who have desire to work in companies in the chemical industry engineering experience problems in mastering the knowledge needed by chemical industry engineering companies. Therefore it is necessary to have an application that adopts science related to the chemical industry engineering term along with good search features. The application that was built to search for information related to chemical industry engineering terms in this study implements the smith algorithm as an algorithm that serves to minimize the use of the time needed in the search process. The smith algorithm notices that counting the number of shifts with the text character that is located right next to the window character on the rightmost text can sometimes provide a shorter shift than using the rightmost window text character. Then he gives a solution to take the maximum between the two values. The application term of chemical industry engineering research was built using visual basic net 2008 and can be operated properly on personal computers supported by Windows OS. Keywords: Chemical Industry Engineering Terms, String Matching, Algorithms, Smith.

Paraboloidal dish concentrators need tracking the sun in the east-west and north-south direction continuously throughout the year. But this paper explains the method of intermittent tracking of the sun in the north-south direction with no tracking in the east-west direction for less energy yield. The frequency of tracking in the north-south direction is determined by the relationship between the variation in solar altitude angle and the size of the absorber in the Paraboloidal dish concentrator. A computer program in Visual BASIC is written to enable the detailed calculations of data for the analysis.© 2004 American Institute of Physics.
