This research uses a novel from two different countries, namely England and France, entitled Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens and Nobody's Boy by Hector Malot. Even though they were written in different countries and periods, both novels seem to be related to one another. This research utilizes the theory of intertextuality as a reference for understanding the relationship between the two novels. The social conflict theory from Karl Marx is also used to support the analysis. The method used is descriptive qualitative data sources from the two selected novels. Data collection techniques are based on things related to social conflict relationships in the novel, data collected in the form of words, phrases, and sentences from dialogue and narration. Then, data validation is done by selecting the most dominant data for intertextual analysis. Data analysis is then done by comparing the two texts as the relationship of hypogram and transformation. The results obtained are a link between the two novels in the form of interrelation between the structure of the story, which includes the background, characters and characterizations, and social conflict in the form of social disparity between the bourgeois and proletarian classes. The text of Nobody's Boy is a transformation from Oliver Twist, which gives a description and emphasis on social inequalities that occur even in years that differ greatly between the two so that from these results, it can be concluded that the two novels have an intertextual relationship in terms of influence.

The present work deals with the adjectives used by Charles Dickens to portray the social class in the novel Great Expectations. The study used a corpus linguistics methodology for data preparation, corpus development, and data analysis. The text of the novel was collected from online sources and used in the compilation of the corpus. The corpus was filtered of additional information and tagged using a part-of-speech tagger (POS tagger). The tagged data was analyzed using AntConc software. The findings of the study suggest that the use of adjectives plays a substantial role in the portrayal of the social class in the novel Great Expectations. The findings also show that there was a clear divide between upper and lower classes. The members of the lower class were humiliated and looked down upon by the members of the upper class.

ASSESSMENTS OF ELIZABETH GASKELL’S two novels of social purpose typically conclude that North and South, published in 1855, is a more mature work stylistically and ideologically than Mary Barton, published in 1848. North and South is said to integrate the narrative modes of romance and realism more effectively than Mary Barton (Felber 63, Horsman 284), and to provide a more complicated narrative structure (Schor, Scheherezade 122–23), a more complex depiction of social conflicts (Easson 59 and 93) and a more satisfactory resolution of them (Duthie 84, Kestner 170). North and South is also said to deal with “more complex intellectual issues” (Craik 31). And the novel’s heroine, Margaret Hale, has been seen as Gaskell’s most mature creation — a woman who grows in self-awareness as she adapts to an alien environment (Kestner 164–166) and, unlike Mary Barton, becomes an active mediator of class conflicts (Stoneman 120), the central consciousness that brings together “the lessons of social change and romance” (Schor, Scheherezade 127).1 The reconciliation of these conflicts she inspires through her influence over both mill owner and worker has been praised as a more effective and credible narrative resolution to the social problems depicted in the novel than the reconciliation between mill owner and worker in Mary Barton (David 36).

This chapter shifts away from politics to the novel, yet remains focused on pain's ability to configure the relation of the subject to the social. Specifically, this chapter argues that Charlotte Brontë's novel uses the phenomenology of pain as a way to imagine the compatibility of privacy—offered as the locus of the individual's value—with community. It argues that these carefully staged refusals of readers' sympathy constitute an attempt to offer recognition and acknowledgement in place of an implicitly normalizing fellow-feeling. We may not be able to enter into one another's feelings, Brontë insists, but we can nevertheless recognize that we all possess them.

The conclusion shows that several of the embodied aspects of writing fiction discussed for the eighteenth-century novel can be traced into the nineteenth century through an example from Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations. It is shown that, like the earlier authors in the case studies in this book, Dickens features shifting embodied stances and involves elements of the media ecology of his day rather than deploying the concrete particulars that “formal realism” considers central to the novel. Links to larger arguments about the role of the novel in literary history are then drawn in contrast with accounts, based on Adorno/Habermas and Benjamin, that argue that eighteenth-century fiction becomes rationalised and disembodied with the novel and its culture industry. Rather than impoverishing experience, it is argued that the novel as a lifeworld technology depends profoundly on readers’ embodied engagements and that 4E cognition is a critical perspective that affords such an alternative take.

The change of literary texts for the subject of Malay Literature i n schools brings with it the hope that the text chosen is one of “quality” in order to successfully reach the aims of the National Education Policy. This article is an analysis of the novel Jeriji Kasih (The Confines of Love) which supposedly is written with “an interesting story-telling technique” and is said to be able to impart “knowledge” as well as to shape students into people conscious of goodness, truth and a refined character. The analysis is based on the locally- developed framework of Genuine Literature ( Persuratan Baru ) which aims to examine the extent to which both these claims are true. The main idea in Genuine Literature is the emphasis on “knowledge” as opposed to “narrative”. This analysis shows how the text shapes a “narrative axis” and comes together in a “narrative space”. The analysis of this text also shows that the “narrative space” has been occupied with the “contents of the narrative” through the manipulation of a number of elements such as character and plot. This analysis reveals that the “knowledge” claimed to be contained in this text diverges from the idea of “knowledge” as put forth by Genuine Literature. Keywords: Genuine Literature, narrative axis, narrative space, knowledge, narrative

Charles Dickens’ Great Expectation actually did reflect the Victorian society and therefore the morality of that era’s people inside of the novel. Since we know that Victorian era basically present some features such as virtue, strength, thrift, manners, cleanliness, honesty and chastity. These are the morals that Victorian people used to hold with high esteem. In this novel Great Expectations, Dickens has created some Victorian characters whom we have seen both in good working way or not at all. But the protagonist named Pip was dynamic and he went through some several changes and dealt with different and significant moral issues. Somehow Pip left behind all the values he was raised with. Because Miss Havisham and Estella have corrupted Pip with rich life. Greed, beauty and arrogance were his ingredient of immoral life. The other characters like Joe and Biddy were static characters throughout the entire novel and became noticeable to be the manifestation of what we call as ideal Victorians. The main heroin of this novel was Estella with whom Pip thought he had some love connection. Hence, Estella has been presented as a good in the sense of potentiality and turned morally bad. Miss Havisham, who was basically a corrupt woman and she engraved the center of the novel. Great Expectations did disclose how was the situation of Victorian society through some important features such as higher class, corrupted judicial system between rural and urban England. Here in this novel, Dickens was concern about the education system in Victorian era where the lower class people get less opportunities of getting proper education. From the beginning to the end of this novel, Dickens explored some significant issues regarding higher and lower class system of Victorian society which did fluctuate from the greatest woeful criminal named Magwitch to the needy people of the swamp country, where Joe and Biddy were the symbol of that regime. After that we can proceed to the middle class family where Pumblechook was the person to represent that regime. Last but not the least Miss Havisham symbolized and bear flag of very rich and sophisticated Victorian woman who has represented the higher class society in the novel Great Expectations. Hence we can say Great Expectations has talked and displayed the class system of Victorian England and the characters of this novel therefore also did uphold the true reflection of Victorian era.
