Abstract. We have set up a facility allowing steady state 13CO2 labeling of short stature vegetation (12 m2) for several years. 13C labelling is obtained by scrubbing the CO2 from outdoors air with a self-regenerating molecular sieve and by replacing it with 13C depleted (−34.7±0.03‰) fossil-fuel derived CO2 The facility, which comprises 16 replicate mesocosms, allows tracing the fate of photosynthetic carbon in plant-soil systems in natural light and at outdoors temperature. This method was applied during 2 yrs to temperate grassland monoliths (0.5×0.5×0.4 m) sampled in a long term grazing experiment. During daytime, the canopy enclosure in each mesocosm was supplied in an open flow (0.67–0.88 volume per minute) with modified air (43% scrubbed air and 57% cooled and humidified ambient air) at mean CO2 concentration of 425 µmol mol−1 and δ13C of −21.5±0.27‰. Above and belowground CO2 fluxes were continuously monitored. The difference in δ13C between the CO2 at the outlet and at the inlet of each canopy enclosure was not significant (−0.35±0.39‰). Due to mixing with outdoors air, the CO2 concentration at enclosure inlet followed a seasonal cycle, often found in urban areas, where δ13C of CO2 is lower in winter than in summer. Mature C3 grass leaves were sampled monthly in each mesocosm, as well as leave from pot-grown control C4 (Paspalum dilatatum). The mean δ13C of fully labelled C3 and C4 leaves reached −41.4±0.67 and −28.7±0.39‰ respectively. On average, the labelling reduced by 12.7‰ the δ13C of C3 grass leaves. The isotope mass balance technique was used to calculate the fraction of "new" C in the soil organic matter (SOM) above 0.2 mm. A first order exponential decay model fitted to "old" C data showed that reducing aboveground disturbance by cutting increased from 22 to 31 months the mean residence time of belowground organic C (>0.2 mm) in the top soil.

Abstract Background It is shown that meeting the increased nutritional demand of preterm infants from birth is not only important for survival but essentially contributes to the infants` overall development and long-term health. While there are established guidelines for weaning term infants, evidence regarding preterm infants is scarce and less precise. The aim of this study was to identify the current practices on introducing solids to preterm infants amongst caregivers in Salzburg and determine potential reasons for early weaning. Methods Altogether 68 infants born between 24 0/7 and 36 6/7 weeks were recruited and detailed structured interviews with the caregivers were conducted at 17 weeks corrected age. Weight, height and head circumference were collected. Results 52% of the study group received solids before the recommended 17 weeks corrected age. For this group the mean age being 13.77 ± 1.11 weeks corrected age. Premature introduction of solids significantly correlates with exclusively and early formula-feeding. 34% were weaned due to recommendation by their paediatrician. 23% of the preterm infants even received solids before 12 weeks corrected age, putting them at risks for developing obesity, celiac disease and diabetes. Conclusions This study shows the necessity for clear guidelines regarding the introduction of complementary feeding in preterm infants as well as the importance of their implementation. Caregivers should receive information on this topic early enough and they should fully understand the difference between chronological and corrected age.

Background: Platelet hyper-aggregability is an important risk factor for leukoaraiosis. In this study we investigated whether aggravation of leukoaraiosis can be controlled by means of long-term correction of platelet hyper-aggregability.Methods:Twenty-one patients with leukoaraiosis and uncorrected platelet hyper-aggregability were compared with 21 controls matched for age, grade of leukoaraiosis and observation period whose platelet hyper-aggregability was corrected. Platelet aggregability was estimated by an optical analytical method with a nine-stage display using two different concentrations each of adenosine diphosphate (ADP) and collagen (the double ADP method). Results:The mean observation period between two magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans for both groups was 4.1 years. In the non-corrected group, moderate to severe aggravation of leukoaraiosis was observed in a large number of patients. In the corrected group, only a small number of patients showed generally mild aggravation of leukoaraiosis. The number of patients showing aggravation of periventricular hyperintensity (PVH) was 7 in 21 in the non-corrected group versus 1 in 21 (p=0.022) in the corrected group, and for aggravation of deep white-matter hyperintensity, these values were 9 in 21 versus 4 in 21, respectively. Thus, the difference was more significant if the degree of aggravation was taken into account. Conclusion:The progress of leukoaraiosis is greatly inhibited by long-term correction of platelet hyper-aggregability.

Abstract. To prevent the spread of the COVID-19 epidemic, restrictions such as “lockdowns” were conducted globally, which led to a significant reduction in fossil fuel emissions, especially in urban areas. However, CO2 concentrations in urban areas are affected by many factors, such as weather, biological sinks and background CO2 fluctuations. Thus, it is difficult to directly observe the CO2 reductions from sparse ground observations. Here, we focus on urban ground transportation emissions, which were dramatically affected by the restrictions, to determine the reduction signals. We conducted six series of on-road CO2 observations in Beijing using mobile platforms before (BC), during (DC) and after (AC) the implementation of COVID-19 restrictions. To reduce the impacts of weather conditions and background fluctuations, we analyze vehicle trips with the most similar weather conditions possible and calculated the enhancement metric, which is the difference between the on-road CO2 concentration and the “urban background” CO2 concentration measured at the tower of the Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP), Chinese Academy of Sciences. The results showed that the DC CO2 enhancement was decreased by 41 (±1.3) parts per million (ppm) and 26 (±6.2) ppm compared to those for the BC and AC trips, respectively. Detailed analysis showed that, during COVID-19 restrictions, there was no difference between weekdays and weekends during working hours (09:00–17:00 local standard time; LST). The enhancements during rush hours (07:00–09:00 and 17:00–20:00 LST) were almost twice those during working hours, indicating that emissions during rush hours were much higher. For DC and BC, the enhancement reductions during rush hours were much larger than those during working hours. Our findings showed a clear CO2 concentration decrease during COVID-19 restrictions, which is consistent with the CO2 emissions reductions due to the pandemic. The enhancement method used in this study is an effective method to reduce the impacts of weather and background fluctuations. Low-cost sensors, which are inexpensive and convenient, could play an important role in further on-road and other urban observations.

Quality of life (QOL) has become an important focus of hernia repair outcomes. This study aims to identify factors which lead to ideal outcomes (asymptomatic and without recurrence) in large umbilical hernias (defect size ≥9 cm2). Review of the prospective International Hernia Mesh Registry was performed. The Carolinas Comfort Scale was used to measure QOL at 1-, 6-, and 12-month follow-up. Demographics, operative details, complications, and QOL data were evaluated using standard statistical methods. Forty-four large umbilical hernia repairs were analyzed. Demographics included: average age 53.6 ± 12.0 and body mass index 34.9 ± 7.2 kg/m2. The mean defect size was 21.7 ± 16.9 cm2, and 72.7 per cent were performed laparoscopically. Complications included hematoma (2.3%), seroma (12.6%), and recurrence (9.1%). Follow-up and ideal outcomes were one month = 28.2 per cent, six months = 42.9 per cent, one year = 55.6 per cent. All patients who remained symptomatic at one and two years were significantly symptomatic before surgery. Symptomatic preoperative activity limitation was a significant predictor of nonideal outcomes at one year ( P = 0.02). Symptomatic preoperative pain was associated with nonideal outcomes at one year, though the difference was not statistically significant ( P = 0.06). Operative technique, mesh choice, and fixation technique did not impact recurrence or QOL. Repair of umbilical hernia with defects ≥9 cm2 had a surprising low rate of ideal outcomes (asymptomatic and no recurrence). All patients with nonideal long-term outcomes had preoperative pain and activity limitations. These data may suggest that umbilical hernia should be repaired when they are small and asymptomatic.

ABSTRACTObjective: To examine medium- to long-term orthodontic treatment stability and its possible association with certain variables.Materials and Methods: In a retrospective longitudinal study of 70 postretention patients, the Peer Assessment Rating (PAR) index was measured at the start (T1) and end (T2) of treatment and between 4 and 10 years afterwards (T3). The stability was considered absolute when the T2 and T3 values were identical and relative when the difference was within the ±5 range. Results: Among the 70 patients, 65.8% were female and 34.2% were male. Their mean age was 14.5 years. The mean treatment length was 2.4 years. The mean retention phase was 3.3 years. The mean pre- and posttreatment PAR scores were 29.8 (T1) and 6.3 (T2). The mean T1–T2 difference was 23.6. The mean T2–T3 difference was −0.39.Conclusions: Within the study, 7.1% presented absolute stability and 68.6% presented relative stability. Lower anterior segment alignment and overbite were the most unstable occlusal features and tended to worsen. Fixed retainer (odds ratio [OR] 0.31; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.10–0.98) as a protective factor and years without retention (OR 1.32; 95% CI 1.03–1.68) as a risk factor are predictor variables of instability in the case of lower anterior segment alignment. The PAR value at the end of treatment (OR 1.29; 95% CI 1.08–1.54) and extractions (OR 4.76; 95% CI 1.05–21.6) before treatment are predictors for midline instability.

Abstract. Particulate chloride is an important component of fine particulate matter in marine air masses. Recent field studies also report elevated concentrations of gas-phase reactive chlorine species and particulate chloride related to anthropogenic activities. This work focuses on particulate chloride detection and quantification issues observed for some quadrupole aerosol chemical speciation monitors (Q-ACSM), which are designed for long-term measurement of ambient aerosol composition. The ACSM reports particle concentrations based on the difference between measurements of ambient air (sample mode) and particle-free ambient air (filter mode). For our long-term campaign in Krakow, Poland, the Q-ACSM reports apparent negative total chloride concentration for most of the campaign when analyzed with the default fragmentation table. This is the result of the difference signal from m/z 35 (35Cl+) being negative which dominates over the positive difference signal from m/z 36 (H35Cl+). Highly time-resolved experiments with NH4Cl, NaCl and KCl particles show that the signal response of m/z 35 is non-ideal, where the signal builds up and decreases slowly for all three salts, leading to a negative difference measurement. In contrast, the m/z 36 signal exhibits a near step-change response for NH4Cl during sampling and filter period, resulting in a positive difference signal. The response of m/z 36 for NaCl and KCl is not as prompt as for NH4Cl but still fast enough to have a positive difference signal. Furthermore, it is shown that this behavior is mostly temperature-independent. Based on these observations, this work presents an approach to correct the chloride concentration time series by adapting the standard fragmentation table coupled with a calibration of NH4Cl to obtain a relative ionization efficiency (RIE) based on the signal at m/z 36 (H35Cl+). This correction can be applied for measurements in environments where chloride is dominated by NH4Cl. Caution should be exercised when other chloride salts dominate the ambient aerosol.

This retrospective study was designed to help clarify the visual prognosis during long-term follow-up (5-10 years) of myopic choroidal neovascularization (CNV) with and without laser treatment in a referral population. Patients and Methods. A group of 50 consecutive non-treated eyes and a group of 50 consecutive treated eyes were selected retrospectively. Inclusion criteria were: fluorescein angiographic documentation of CNV not involving the center of the fovea, visual acuity (VA) > 20/200, age less than 60, onset of symptoms ≤ 6 months and at least five years of follow-up. The mean decrease in VA in non-treated and treated eyes during the follow-up was analysed on the basis of subgroups with the same initial VA. Results Considering both groups (100 eyes) at presentation, 89% of CNV spared the center of the fovea but were located in the foveolar area (< 200 μm) and only 11% were extrafoveal (> 200 μm). In the natural history group, after five years all CNV involved the center of the fovea and mean VA was 20/160. In the treated group, at the end of the five year follow-up and after one or more laser session, 64% of eyes had a dry scar and mean VA was 20/74. Nevertheless there was a very high rate of recurrences (72%) and at the end of follow-up, 36% of treated eyes had a subfoveal recurrence with a mean decrease in VA to 20/154. The difference between the mean decrease in VA of the treated and non-treated groups was statistically significant at two years. At five years (100 eyes), the difference persisted only for eyes with initial VA better than ≥ 20/40 (P<0.05). At eight years (76 eyes) and ten years (24 eyes), this difference was no longer significant. Comments This study confirms that CNV accompanying degenerative myopia has an extremely poor prognosis. Nevertheless analysis of final VA in both groups suggests that eyes with high initial VA gain more from treatment.

Millions of pulmonary diseases, respiratory diseases, and premature deaths are caused by poor ambient air quality in developing countries, especially in China. A proven indicator of ambient air quality, atmospheric visibility (AV), has displayed continuous decline in China’s urban areas. A better understanding of the characteristics and the factors affecting AV can help the public and policy makers manage their life and work. In this study, long-term AV trends (from 1957–2016, excluding 1965–1972) and spatial characteristics of 31 provincial capital cities (PCCs) of China (excluding Taipei, Hong Kong, and Macau) were investigated. Seasonal and annual mean values of AV, percentage of ‘good’ (≥20 km) and ‘bad’ AV (<10 km), cumulative percentiles and the correlation between AV, socioeconomic factors, air pollutants and meteorological factors were analyzed in this study. Results showed that annual mean AV of the 31 PCCs in China were 14.30 km, with a declining rate of −1.07 km/decade. The AV of the 31 PCCs declined dramatically between 1973–1986, then plateaued between 1987–2006, and rebounded slightly after 2007. Correlation analysis showed that impact factors (e.g., urban size, industrial activities, residents’ activities, urban greening, air quality, and meteorological factors) contributed to the variation of AV. We also reveal that residents’ activities are the primary direct socioeconomic factors on AV. This study hopes to help the public fully understand the characteristics of AV and make recommendations about improving the air environment in China’s urban areas.

In additional the coma feature, the shape of light curve had been found the difference probably fresh material or surface properties changed around the impact site. In this study, we present the results of our monitoring observations obtained in 2014 and 2019-2020. The mean values of the color indices (B&#8722;V&#160;= (0.75 &#177; 0.08)m,&#160;V&#8722;R&#160;= (0.45 &#177; 0.04)m, and&#160;R&#8722;I&#160;= (0.44 &#177; 0.09)m) agree well with the values for asteroids of the D-types. The rotation period of the asteroid estimated from photometric observations in 2014 is 15.8 &#177; 0.1 h.&#160;The shape of the light curve is similar as that found after impact event. Furthermore, we did not find any rotational color variability in B-V, V-R and R-I diagrams, meaning the observed surface in this observing period of 2019-2020 is homogeneous.</p>
