The teaching literature contains a wealth of articles discussing the success of interventions designed to foster critical thinking. However, most of these articles describe qualitative assessments of critical thinking interventions, with very few quantitative assessments (Abrami et al., 2008). While both qualitative and quantitative methods have unique value, there is a need for quantitative data to supplement qualitative claims that various strategies for teaching critical thinking are successful. The goal of this workshop is to provide a framework that members of all disciplines can use to quantitatively assess the success of critical thinking interventions in their own classroom. Participants will learn about common research approaches and assessments that have been used in published quantitative studies on critical thinking. They will also learn strategies for assessing the experimental rigor of previous critical thinking research and will work together to create a plan to apply this knowledge in their own classrooms.

Abstract Narrative study of religious lives has formed part of numerous projects at the Bielefeld Research Center for Biographical Studies in Contemporary Religion. An essential instrument in our designs, which mostly combine qualitative and quantitative methods, is the Faith Development Interview (FDI). In response to longstanding criticism its cognitive structural framework has been revised in respect of styles and schemata. The religious styles perspective examines the self as articulated in narratives and associates it with affectivity and emotion. This article gives an overview of our theoretical and methodological revisions, which take cognizance of current developments in lifespan developmental and clinical psychology such as attachment, mentalization and wisdom. We illustrate the implementation of these advances with a case study from our current study of ‘spirituality’,1 which we locate in the complex multi-method design, and outline the triangulation of qualitative and quantitative data.

The existence of large wallow which is an ex-mining of andesite stone that is not manage properly became the focus of this study. The objective of this study was to analyse the potential of geo-tourism object at the land of ex-andesite stone mining (Setu Jayamix), as well as to find out the feasibility value of geo-tourism object at the lake of ex-andesite stone mining (Setu Jayamix). Mix methods, which is a combination of  qualitative  and quantitative  methods with the research design of  sequential exploratory was used in this study. Sequential exploratory design is a research model where the qualitative data is collected and analyzed, then followed by the collection and analysis of quantitative data, which aims to strengthen the results of the study. The results showed that the potentials of geo-tourism in ex-andesite stone mining area i.e. lake waters, the uniqueness of andesitic stone outcrops, and the view of landscape that overgrown by various plantation  crops. Based on the results of the feasibility analyses of geo-tourism, then obtained a feasible value for the geological criteria of physical components (score = 26.334), sustainable for the economic components (score = 20.114), sustainable for the conservation components (score = 10.971), and educative (score = 8.518).

The use of blogs in teaching and learning has emerged as a useful education-al technology resource. Hence, this study’s objective is to investigate the students’ perception of blogs and the blog usage patterns from the educa-tional aspect. Eighteen samples were chosen purposively in this study. The study collected both qualitative and quantitative data. The research instru-ments were questionnaires, semi-structured interviews and students’ blogs. Using both qualitative and quantitative methods, the data collected was an-alysed descriptively and thematically. The results revealed the positive outcomes of students’ perceptions of blog aspects such as writing, reading and making comments. In terms of blog usage patterns, student frequencies in writing and sharing information in blogs were high when they were given tasks or activities that would be evaluated by an instructor. This showed that instructors play an important role in motivating the students to be ac-tively involved in blogs. Therefore, rewards or marks need to be given as an encouragement to the students for them to continuously and actively use blogs for learning.

Choosing a career as an Early Childhood Education Teacher is both challenging and joyful.  Not everyone is interested in this profession except for those who have strong motivation. This study aims to identify students’ exact motivation to select the Early Childhood Education Department at Public University. This study uses combined qualitative and quantitative methods (exploratory mixed methods design). Sources of qualitative data were taken from twenty informants through in-depth interviews and analyzed using NVivo 10 analysis software, while sources of quantitative data were taken from a hundred correspondents and analyzed using SPSS 20 software. Both qualitative and quantitative data analyses showed that students have seven motivations to select the Early Childhood Education Department. Those seven motivations are: i) parents encouragement (81%); ii) job opportunities after graduation (83%); iii) loving kids (85%); iv) teaching is a noble profession (100%); self-will (70%); vi) the choice to be a teacher (76%); and vii) Early Childhood Education is not difficult, but joyful (80%). The study has successfully revealed seven students’ motivations for selecting the Early Childhood Education Department at Public University. This study’s results can be used as preliminary data for subsequent researchers to examine this problem in different contexts and issues. This study’s findings need to be continued by the next researcher by examining the correlation between motivational aspects with various other variables. However, this data can also be used as an initial reference for examining the issues and problems in different contexts.

Despite a long history of researchers who combine phenomenology with qualitative or quantitative methods, there are only few examples of working with a phenomenological mixed method—a method where phenomenology informs both qualitative and quantitative data generation, analysis, and interpretation. Researchers have argued that in working with a phenomenological mixed method, there should be mutual constraint and enlightenment between the qualitative (first-person, subjective) and quantitative (third-person, objective) methods for studying consciousness. In this article, we discuss what a framework for phenomenological mixed methods could look like and we aim to provide guidance of how to work within such framework. We are inspired by resources coming from research in mixed methods and existing examples of phenomenological mixed-method research. We also present three cases of phenomenological mixed methods where we study complex social phenomena and discuss the process of how we conducted the studies. From both the research inspiration and our own studies, we depict the landscape of possibilities available for those interested in mixing phenomenology with qualitative and quantitative methods, as well as the challenges and common pitfalls that researchers face. To navigate in this landscape, we develop a three-fold structure, focusing on (1) the phenomenological frame, (2) the phenomenologically informed generation of qualitative and quantitative data (tier one), and (3) the phenomenologically informed analysis and interpretation of data (tier two).

This article addresses mediatization of religion which particularly focuses on how Indonesian Muslims in Hungary mediatize their Islamic practices. It is a result of an empirical study incorporating two approaches, qualitative and quantitative methods. Participant observation and semi-structured in-depth interviews involving 18 informants were conducted for collecting the quantitative data whereas the quantitative data was generated from an online survey collected from 102 participants (60 males and 42 females). The result of the study shows that the lack of integration to the local Islamic institutions affects the mediatization of Islam. The form of Islamic mediatization can be seen through their way of obtaining religious messages, news, and information which primarily relies on the internet. Most of them depend on Social media, where YouTube channel was the most favorite one followed by Facebook and Instagram,  to obtain Islamic resources. The dependency upon media particularly YouTube has the potential to shift religious authority from institutional to individual authority. While some scholars debate whether mediatization of religion could encourage secularization or not, the case of Indonesian Muslims in the Hungarian context shows that instead of becoming more secular, the dependency upon media for religious practices affects them to be more religious.
