Background: Malnutrition is still one of the most important and common problems in hospitals and increases the incidence, side effects, and mortality in hospitalized patients. In this regard, the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) patients are more at risk due to critical conditions. Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of nurses’ nutritional guidelines on the severity of malnutrition in ICU patients. Methods: This single-blind clinical trial was conducted on 70 patients hospitalized in the ICU of Golestan and Imam Khomeini hospitals in Ahwaz in 2012. Available patients were randomly divided into the control and intervention groups. The data collection tool was a checklist of demographic data and the Maastricht index for malnutrition assessment. Patients were evaluated based on the Maastricht index at baseline and 10 days after feeding. Results: There was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of demographic variables. Mean and standard deviation of albumin, pre-albumin, and lymphocyte parameters before the intervention were 3.13 ± 0.571, 1.28 ± 0.31, 1638.2 ± 489.59, whereas, after the intervention, they were 536 3.32 ± 3.88, 1.88 ± 0.36, 2195 ± 40.85, respectively. Also, the amount of malnutrition intensity by the Maastricht formula before and after the intervention was 4.89 ± 2.17 and 2.00 ± 2.10, at a significance level of 0.001. Regarding the normal distribution of data, using the T-test, two groups showed significant differences (P = 0.001). Conclusions: The prevalence of malnutrition is high in patients admitted to the ICUs, which is mainly due to inappropriate nutrition of patients in these sectors. Although nurses play a significant role in feeding patients, their knowledge in this field is less than needed. According to the results of this study, the use of the guideline by nurses reduced the severity of malnutrition. Therefore, it is essential to create the necessary backgrounds for increasing the knowledge of this group of treatment staff and to educate valid nutrition guides for them to improve the nutritional status, and subsequently accelerate the treatment process of the patients.

Sleep is an essential need that must be met, especially in the development phase since brain and body development will occur during sleep. Thus, sleep disturbance is a problem that will cause adverse effects on growth and development, especially for babies. Sleep quality for babies can be improved by providing baby massage on a regular basis. The purpose of this study was to prove whether there were differences in sleep quality before and after the massage in babies aged 3-4 months in Gelatik and Nuri IHC (Integrated Health Center) of Tanjungunggat Village of Tanjungpinang Municipality. Design: This was a Quasi Experiment study with a pretest-posttest method. The sample consisted of 17 respondents selected by purposive sampling technique. The statistical test used in this study was a dependent t-test with a significance level of 0.05.Result: The results showed that there was no significant difference between baby sleep duration before and after the massage (p = 0.414). However, there was significant difference between the frequency of waking up before and after the massage (p = 0.001) and there was a significant difference between the duration of waking up before and after the massage (p = 0.046. Discuss: Based on the results of this study, it is suggested that mothers should improve their knowledge on the importance of baby massage provided by health professionals and the health professionals should provide and demonstrate clear, complete and sustained information to the mothers and other related parties surrounding the IHC.

The aim of this study was to assess the shaping ability of the XP Shaper (XPS) file in severely curved canal models under simulated body temperature and compare it with that of the WaveOne Gold (WOG) file. Ninety-six simulated root canals were equally distributed into XPS and WOG systems to be shaped by eight files each. Files were assessed under a stereomicroscope prior to canal shaping to detect deformation if any. The canals were shaped at 35 ± 1°C using the X-Smart Plus motor. Images of the canals were obtained before and after instrumentation using a stereomicroscope to measure the amount of removed resin from both the inner and outer curvature sides at apex (0 mm) and 3 mm and 6 mm from the apex. The shaping time was calculated. The data were statistically analyzed by the independent t-test at 5% significance level. The XPS and WOG systems shaped the canals in 37.0 ± 9.5 and 62.6 ± 11.3 seconds (P<0.05), respectively. At the apex level, the amount of resin removal in both sides did not show a significant difference between the tested groups (P>0.05). At 3 mm and 6 mm levels, the WOG removed more resin than XPS at both sides (P<0.05). In XPS, deformation was observed in four files: one file after the first use, one file after the fourth use, and two files after the sixth use. In WOG, two files were deformed: one file after the fifth use and one file after the sixth use. One XPS file was fractured after the sixth use. In short, XPS and WOG files can be used in shaping severely curved canals as they showed the ability to maintain the original shape with minimal transportation. Both file systems showed signs of deformation after use with a lower number of deformed files observed in WOG throughout the experiment.

Abstract Background Dengue mortality can be preventable in endemic regions. However, access to intensive care units (ICU) and continuous monitoring strategies are limited in developing countries. In 2010, WHO dengue clinical practice guidelines (CPG) were implemented in the Americas region which strengthened hospital healthcare management and prioritized early ICU admission in severe dengue cases. We hypothesized that early access to the ICU might decrease the mortality of patients with dengue. This study aimed to describe trends in dengue cases and mortality in the ICU for 15 years in Cali, Colombia. Methods An observational retrospective study about dengue cases treated in adult ICU was conducted, in the Fundación Valle del Lili. We included cases between 2001 to 2015 years. Clinical data were collected from the ICU database and medical charts. A Cochran-Armitage test for trend was used to assess the presence of an association between fatal cases and total cases in dengue patients at ICU during the study period, and to evaluate differences in the mortality cases before and after the implementation of the dengue CPG. Results A total of 49,962 episodes of attention in ICU were analyzed, and 70 cases with severe dengue and dengue shock attended in ICU were included. The median age was 42 years (IQR = 24–60), eight cases were older than 65 years, and 54% were male. Five fatal cases were reported during this period. The fatal cases had a length of stay in ICU of 2 days (IQR = 1–4) vs. 2 days (IQR = 1–3) for nonfatal cases. Overall mortality for dengue cases in the ICU was 7.14%. The highest mortality was presented in 2007 with 33.33% (1/3), and after 2010 there were no fatal cases. Dengue mortality showed a decreasing linear variation over time in the ICU (p = 0.047); also there was a statistically significant difference over time in adults mortality before and after of implementation of dengue CPG (P = 0.029). Conclusion Dengue mortality cases in the ICU have decreased in the last 15 years, which is related to early admission to the ICU and continuous clinical monitoring. Intervention for the control of body weight in adolescents using active video games: a pilot study. Intervention strategies that use exergames that aim to stimulate the practice of physical activity, as well as the reduction of the time in sedentary behavior, through promising ways to deal with the increase of obesity rates. This is the way of Extension Project “Exergaming for health: intervention for the control of body weight in adolescents using active video games”, with fomentation of MEC/PROEXT in 2013. The aim of this study was to verify the effect of an eight-week intervention with active video games on variables related to adolescent body weight. An eight-week intervention study with a duration of 60 minutes per session, with use of exergames was performed. Eight schoolchildren participated, with mean age of 11.5±0.5 years. Anthropometric measures before and after the intervention were performed. Descriptive statistics and the non-parametric equivalent of paired t-test were used in SPSS 20.0 with significance level of p0.05. It was observed that there was a significant difference only in waist circumference (cm) with a reduction of 2.8 cm (p = 0.028). The other variables analyzed were not different. The pilot study of an eight-week intervention with active videogames demonstrated the possibility of reducing anthropometric measures, such as the waist circumference of adolescents. We suggested that new studies with exergames focus on this outcome over a longer period of intervention and/or with a larger number of sessions during the week.
