This article is a brief introduction to important terms related to Islam. It also provides an overview of important differences in modern Islamic thought. According to the literature in this field, three schools of thought are distinguished and elements that differ from each other are explored. Also, the article treats Islamic economics by exploring its development as an academic field of study and provides an overview of important concepts and topics. Here we will see how the differentiation into three schools of modern Islamic thought is relevant to the understanding of Islamic economics and some of its controversial issues. The article, in addition, introduces the concept of sustainable development, explores the development of the concept and introduces important concepts related to that idea. Finally, the last section deals with the correlation between the Islamic economy and sustainable development.

The paper examines the importance of designing a framework for studying worldviews within the parameters of contemporary Islamic thought. It briefly reviews both selected western and Islamic stances on worldview studies. The literature reveals that research on this topic and its application to different spheres has become a topic of some interest to many intellectual circles, particularly in the western context. Hence, the possibility of forming an Islamic civilizational framework for an inquiry into people’s worldviews needs to be assessed. This article follows a textual analysis and inductive approach to analyze the prospects of formulating an Islamic framework for research on worldviews and its applications. It concludes that western scholars have made considerable efforts in treating people’s worldviews as a field of study, while Muslim scholars have not. In this respect, many western researchers have contributed to developing worldview studies as a separate field of inquiry, including the history of concept, subject matter, objectives, kinds, methods, and applications. Therefore, the need to enhance the Islamic input and research pertaining to this field by introducing an Islamic civilizational framework and approach of inquiry becomes apparent.

The case of Various Raw Materials has been settled. However, some issues in this case are still popular topics among Chinese scholars. The most controversial issues are whether China is entitled to invoke Article XX of the GATT 1994 to defend its export restrictions and whether China demonstrated its measures consistent with Article XX (b) and (g) of the GATT 1994. This paper points out that the Article XX of GATT 1994 in its essence is extremely difficult to be invoked successfully. What makes it even more difficult is ‘stereotype’ to China’s ‘exceptional circumstances’. In view of ineffectiveness of the necessity defence, changing economic management pattern to achieve sustainable development is the fundamental way to solve the problem of Chinese environmental protection as related to exploitation of natural resource.

The discussion about Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Projects has its roots in global warming and its consequences. CDM projects enable developed countries to offset the pollution generated by the acquisition of Certified Emission Reductions (CER), concerning the reduction of Greenhouse Gases (GHG) emissions in developing countries. The article discusses the CDM in a comprehensive manner, based on the opinion of experts, and investigates the future of this market from 2012, the post-Kyoto period. The main results show that the CDM follows the principles of Sustainable Development, focusing on the climate changes and the profitability of projects. It shows that Brazil has real possibilities to act in the CER market which is expected to consolidate in the post-Kyoto. Controversial issues as the future of post-Kyoto, nuclear power and especially the conservation of forests, through the generation of CER, remain undefined.

Economic development is one of the most controversial issues of economic history. The experience in development research of the past 50 years has demonstrated that development is possible but not inevitable. Governance over the last few decades has moved into the spotlight of development economists. The relationship between governance and development has been a highly debated topic. Therefore, the main purpose of this chapter is to critically examine the evidence on the governance-development relationship by providing systemic reviews of recent theoretical debate. This chapter is divided into three main sections. First, the chapter traces the concepts, elements, and theories of economic development, starting with Adam Smith and his classical school and finally recent theory on development which focus on institutions. The second section examines different perspectives of governance and identifies key governance indicators. The final section explores selected theories of governance and development emanating from several disciplines in the social sciences.

This chapter provides a description of how the academic field of Policy Analysis has evolved in Mexico. After presenting the different approaches to policy analysis, mainly “evaluative policy analysis” and “explanatory analysis”, it discusses three periods of policy analysis in the country. The first one goes from 1940 to 1990, when the subject was studied under an authoritarian political system that cared little about policy efficiency and with no relation to the policy analysis methods or approaches which emerged in the U.S. in the 1950s. The second one, 1990-2000, was a decade during which policy analysis finally emerged as a field, with Mexican scholars producing pioneering works and sponsoring the first academic programs and expert journals, all of this in the middle of important economic and political changes in the country. The third period, from 2000 to the present time, has been characterized by an increasing number of publications, academic programs and contributors, reflecting the growing maturity of the field and the more favorable intellectual conditions provided by an emerging democratic environment. Thus, the chapter concludes that policy analysis as a field of study has surpassed in Mexico its visibility threshold, although it still needs to overcome some other challenges.

AbstractAs the academic field of missiology has matured over the past century, nearly everything about the discipline became more complex. Clearly, the field has expanded beyond the boundaries of applied theology. Among its practitioners today are both secular observers and scholars who are themselves actively involved in world missionary efforts. In no other part of the typical seminary curriculum, perhaps, do the concerns of so many different academic fields naturally intersect, including history, linguistics, anthropology, sociology of religion, communications, education, leadership, studies of organizational behavior and, of course, all of the theological sciences. With such a broad range of potential themes to pursue and so many scholarly conversation partners to engage, missiologists may be tempted to envision their field of study as an inchoate collection of all human knowledge. This article argues otherwise by proposing a detailed framework in outline form for the discipline, by which the main divisions and most central topics of the field can be indicated. To prepare the way for this new proposal, several existing classified bibliographies related to missiology are analyzed.

New uses for social networks are emerging in educational fields offering endless materials for the teaching–learning process. Skills development therefore leads to an education focused on sustainable development. Proper use of social media is especially important to achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 of the 2030 Agenda, which proclaims inclusive and equitable quality education and promotes lifelong learning opportunities for all—a trend that implies large data volumes that can be manipulated and adapted to the needs of each student, thus opening up new perspectives. This study aims to identify the differences between the use of social networks among students classed into two generations, X and Y. With that aim in mind, the results of a survey administered to 338 university students engaged in online studies showed significant differences, mainly in relation to social issues. Both generations nevertheless agreed on the benefits and uses of social networks within the academic field. The conclusions reaffirm the use of these resources for improving teaching and learning processes within online environments.

The establishment of a field of study or a discipline with academic or professional standing requires, among other things, a body of knowledge that expands understanding of that domain. This paper looks at the literature on establishing a unique field of study, reviews the foundational research in family business (1980s) and four recent years (1997-2001) of published family business research found in several outlets. We find that family business research is becoming increasingly sophisticated and rigorous. This bodes well for the development of an independent field for family business. Recommendations are offered to further the professionalization of family business as an academic and professional domain.

Many scholars of religion who teach today in nondenominational schools may take it for granted that these schools have no institutional mandate to espouse a particular religious agenda. Yet, how did this relatively new approach become common during the last century, when in the preceding era the opposite was true? A close reading of one context or institution can reveal broader trends applicable in many other realms. The evolution of the approach to religious scholarship at nineteenth-century Harvard can serve as one such specific, but widely illuminating, point of inquiry. The deliberate shift away from instruction in doctrinal theology toward a more modern approach to religion as an academic field of study became a prominent trend in American higher education, with Harvard leading the way. But why did Harvard pursue this particular agenda in advance of other institutions? This article suggests that the answer lies largely in political concerns. Harvard was concerned with issues of perception and the practical consequences resulting from public expression of disapprobation.

Orientalism (1978) is one of the greatest intellectual works of the last century in which Edward W. Said (1935-2003) challenges Western culture on account of its erroneous beliefs about the East. Orientalism, as Said describes, is not merely an academic field of study, but a way of thinking and a collection of beliefs which work together as a powerful tool to justify the colonial ideology. However, what Said suggests is not an anti-Western theory. In Orientalism, he interacts with a number of his contemporary intellectuals. This paper is a brief review of the influence of contemporary philosophers, thinkers and Western theories on Said’s interpretation of Orientalism. The paper also attempts to discuss that how Said’s Orientalism is related to the above-mentioned theories such as Gramsci’s cultural hegemony, Foucault’s notion of power/knowledge, Derrida’s deconstruction, and Bakhtin’s polyphony. Although this topic has been of interest to other researchers, further studies will contribute to the richness of the subject and can be used by students and scholars.
