Mathematics as a subject is considered difficult as well as interesting and enjoyable. children like its challenge, its clarity, and the fact that you know when you are right. The solution to a problem makes a feeling of excitement and satisfaction. The objectives of the study were (i) to explore the fun and amusement in teaching mathematics at the elementary level (ii) to review the existing and required facilities at the elementary level (iii) to find out how students take fun in learning mathematics at the elementary level. Four elementary schools were taken as a sample of the study. The questionnaires were used with the teachers and students separately n the themes related to the fun, amusement, and effectiveness in teaching Mathematics. On the basis of analysis, it was found that the majority of the teachers were teaching the out-dated curriculum which does not satisfy the socio-economic needs of students. Although teachers s and students had fun in their teaching and learning process. It is found that the elementary teachers and students were not up to the mark because they were less equipped as compared to the physical and other basic facilities which should be available in the schools. It is proposed that all schools, including the English medium schools, must follow the education policy in the teaching of mathematics and curriculum. Furthermore, the trained and qualified teachers should be appointed on merit both in the government and private schools.

Through our experience in teaching mathematics to engineering undergraduates, we found that students had numerous difficulties with the mathematics learned. Although our students have demonstrated the ability to answer standard or routine questions, there were still some inconsistencies between their ability to answer questions and their understanding of the concepts and the mathematical procedures they were using. In previous work, we had highlighted the importance of mathematical thinking and adopted suitable approaches in teaching and learning of engineering mathematics. However, innovative strategies were deemed necessary to assist students in their learning. In this paper, we will share how we transform our teaching practice to facilitate the development of students’ ability in understanding the various mathematical concepts, in reconstructing them as parts of a whole through cooperative learning. The approach allows them to develop efficient strategies in constructing new knowledge and be empowered with more successful ways of thinking about mathematics and solving problems. Here, we will share our experience in translating some of the theories into classroom practice through informal cooperative learning environment. Data were gathered through our own reflections, classroom observation, and interviews with the students. We will bring to light the findings on the students’ ability to solve problems related to the topics learned and discuss the implications for effective mathematics teaching and learning of prospective engineers.

AbstractEducational chatbots (ECs) are chatbots designed for pedagogical purposes and are viewed as an Internet of Things (IoT) interface that could revolutionize teaching and learning. These chatbots are strategized to provide personalized learning through the concept of a virtual assistant that replicates humanized conversation. Nevertheless, in the education paradigm, ECs are still novel with challenges in facilitating, deploying, designing, and integrating it as an effective pedagogical tool across multiple fields, and one such area is project-based learning. Therefore, the present study investigates how integrating ECs to facilitate team-based projects for a design course could influence learning outcomes. Based on a mixed-method quasi-experimental approach, ECs were found to improve learning performance and teamwork with a practical impact. Moreover, it was found that ECs facilitated collaboration among team members that indirectly influenced their ability to perform as a team. Nevertheless, affective-motivational learning outcomes such as perception of learning, need for cognition, motivation, and creative self-efficacy were not influenced by ECs. Henceforth, this study aims to add to the current body of knowledge on the design and development of EC by introducing a new collective design strategy and its pedagogical and practical implications.

There has always been a great concern about the teaching of mathematics in engineering degrees. This concern has increased because students have less interest in these studies, which is mainly due to the low motivation of the students towards mathematics, and which is derived in most cases from the lack of awareness of undergraduate students about the importance of mathematics for their career. The main objective of the present work is to achieve a greater motivation for engineering students via an intervention from the teaching staff to undergraduate students. This intervention consists of teaching and learning mathematical concepts through real applications in engineering disciplines. To this end, starting in the 2017/2018 academic year, sessions addressed to the teaching staff from Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in Spain were held. Then, based on the material extracted from these sessions, from 2019/2020 academic year the sessions “Applications of Mathematics in Engineering I: Linear Algebra” for undergraduate students were offered. With the aim of assessing these sessions, anonymous surveys have been conducted. The results of this intervention show an increase in students’ engagement in linear algebra. These results encourage us to extend this experience to other mathematical subjects and basic sciences taught in engineering degrees.
