Connie Carøe Christiansen: “We, Islamists”. Distinetion and Drama in Islamic Activism In the town of Fes the Islamic activists have now accepted Islamist as a term of selfdesignation. In the continuous drama of a rivalry between comrades and Islamists at the university campus, the Islamists are recreating themselves as Islamists. This struggle, as well as other activities of the Islamists, is reinforcing an objectifying approach to the world. The social space of the university is a polarized space where both political groups are trying to obtain visibility by various activities on the campus, which in a sense can be regarded as a stage. Their offer of a political standpoint, however, is often rejected and the vast majority of the Moroccan youth present themselves as uninterested in politics. They are in reality exeluded from formal political participation. The ability to objectify may act as support for the ascendent middle class in Morocco where politics has been tumed into an activity for elite families which are allied with the powerful king, Hassan II. At the university, however, political organizing is something that is quite easily accomplished, but at the same time it is monitored and controlled by the police. The political activities of the university students, therefore, have little real effeet, which only adds to the impression of them as exaggerated, as if having a melodramatic character. The Islamist, female students are not involved in the physical confrontations between comrades and brothers. Rather, necessitated by stereotype ideas on the Muslim woman as dumb and duil, they are engaged in a struggle of distinction. In this struggle they are implicitly distancing themselves from their “ordinary Muslim” sisters, the uneducated Muslim woman and the female students who let the religion play a minor part in their lives. This also involves objectifying processes. The Islamist women place impetus on the hijab but have also realized that this device does not suffice as a signal of commitment to the Islamist cause, because anybody can wear a hijab, calling for evemew devices of distinction. At doser look, the Islamists may have more in common with their secularist rivals than might be expected if one judges from the dramatic rivalry at the university. The women at least seem to be more concemed with distancing themselves from the ordinary Muslim woman, in order to make it possible to be recognized as being, at one and the same time, a woman, a Muslim, and an intellectual.

The University of Guayaquil, which shares the same name as the city where it is located, faces the challenge of transforming its image for the XXI century. It was deemed necessary to identify details about the urban evolution of the historic link with the city, in relation to the changes produced by the project’s siting and its direct area of influence. The goal is to integrate the main university campus within a framework which guarantees sustainability and allows innovation in the living lab. To achieve this, the action research method was applied, focused on participation and the logic framework. For the diagnosis, proposal, and management model, integrated working groups were organized with internal users such as professors, students, and university authorities, and external actors such as residents, the local business community, Guayaquil city council, and the Governorate of Guayas. As result of the diagnosis, six different analysis dimensions were established which correspond to the new urban agenda for the future campus: compactness, inclusiveness, resilience, sustainability, safety and participation. As a proposal, the urban design integrates the analysis dimensions whose financing and execution are given by the Town Hall, at the same time the Governorate integrates the campus with its network of community police headquarters.

ABSTRACT The study aims to shed light on the reality of empowering the female students regarding the activities, the extent of engagement, their autonomy, and the academic development among them. In addition, it reveals the empowering requirements from the perspective of the activities’ leadership. The study used the analytical descriptive method, and the tools of the study, and analysed the documents, the questionnaire form and the meetings with the university leaderships. Empowering the female students’ rate for the activities was fifty percent. The cultural activities represented the rate of thirty to forty percent and the social activities represented the rate of 28.38 percent. Secondly, the meetings results showed that the female students are empowered for the activities, which fit their nature and identity. First, they had the rate of 17.14 percent, and the first impediments rated 11.19 percent. Regrading unempowering the female students for the activities, there was no enough number for the competitions. The major requirements for empowering the activities and providing the activities according to the requirements of the female students, their desires and attitudes had the rate of 17.14 percent. The questionnaire showed that the factor of autonomy and assessment rated mathematical average of 1.90 out of 3. It came after the academic development factor, with general mathematical average of 2.18 out of 3. As for the factor of the activities and their fittings, it had the general mathematical average of 1.93 out of 3.

Purpose This paper aims to highlight the contribution of ecological fairs to the promotion of sustainability in university campuses, based on a case study carried out at the University of Passo Fundo, located in Southern Brazil. Design/methodology/approach Producers and consumers of the ecological fairs were interviewed to analyse how the social, economic and environmental spheres of sustainable development are impacted by these fairs. In total, 24 interviews were conducted. Findings The results showed how fairs positively impact the academic and local community while bringing sustainability into university campuses. Research limitations/implications The main limitations of this study were the number of interviews and the short period during when the study was conducted. Practical implications This case study demonstrated how the promotion of ecological fairs on a university campus plays an important role in the implementation and practice of sustainability and can serve as an example for other institutions that intend to work on similar projects. Originality/value This paper contributes to the literature by providing a discussion on how ecological fairs represent a good addition in the process of universities to become more sustainable and which aspects of each sustainability sphere are involved.

Purpose The purpose of this research is to analyze the motivation behind the hijab behavior in a multicultural environment of Malaysia; it is a religious obligation or fashion behavior. In an analytic thinking of motivation in influencing women in wearing a hijab, learning from the social environment on religious obligation and fashion in hijab has been discussed. Design/methodology/approach Quantitative analysis has been conducted for 100 hijab-wearing female students in the University of Malaya. Findings The findings were tabulated and the outcomes proved that most of the women took the hijab as a religious obligation instead of fashion motivation. Muslim women are still taking on the religious obligation in styling up the hijab. Modification in the hijab can be accepted in Malaysia, but the substantial design to wear the hijab is an obligation. Originality/value This study exclusively discusses the hijab as fashion and religious obligation within the context of Malaysia.

Purpose of the study: This study examines the social adjustment of Malaysian students studying in Egypt, Morocco, and Jordan. Quantitative, comparative and case study methods were used. Methodology: Through the questionnaire, in which the social adjustment of the students to the university campus was defined, a total of 587 questionnaires were answered by Malaysian students studying in the three countries. SPSS software was used to carry out the calculation of the mean, t-test, ANOVA and Tukey HSD analysis. Main Findings: The outcome of the analysis shows that Malaysian male and female students reached the medium level of social adjustment in the three countries. The differences in the means of female and male responses have no significance. Malaysian student's adjustment to the class climate was higher than that of the environment outside. Malaysian students more adjusted with a university campus in Jordan and Egypt than they are in Morocco. Applications of this study: This study showed a view of conditions Malaysian students in Jordan, Morocco, and Egypt. It will be helpful for students, universities, teachers to be aware of foreign students’ social adjustment issues and pay more attention to this particular problem. Novelty/Originality of this study: This paper found Malaysian students are more adjusted to the university campus in Jordan and Egypt than they are in Morocco. This suggests that Morocco is a better destination for study for Malaysian students as long as the social adjustment is concerned.

AbstractThomas Jefferson coined the image of the academical village for the university-campus. Whereupon the word village can be translated into the German expression ›Dorf‹ (village) as well as ›Gemeinde‹ (community). Thus the place and people, who enliven their surroundings, are an integral part of the campus. This metaphor gathers the cultural imprint of the campus as an ideal environment for learning as well as its incorporated imaginations. This article follows the question, if the buildings of a university can be seen as a result of the social structures of the academical village. Perhaps they were intended from the beginning on as a production of these social configurations. Therefore this paper wants to inquire specifically into the expressiveness of architecture in the specific case of the early Saarbrücken campus planning of the Universität des Saarlandes. The field of tension university shall be approached as a topic between representative institution and architectural manifestation.

    The aim of the study was to identify the reasons for using Whatsapp and Snapchat as recognizedby female students and to identify the cultural consequencesof the use of Whatsapp on the behavior of the university students in respect to social and knowledge field, and to identify the cultural consequencesof the use of Snapchat in respect to cultural and educational field and identify the statistically significance differences of the views among the female university students, which are related to the variables of the study: the stage of study and the number of hours of use. the researcher used the descriptive survey approach rely on a questionnaire that consisted of (58) sentences distributed according to the fields of the study, it was applied to a sample of (503) female students of College of Education at King Saud University. Preliminary data of the study showed that 33.2% of the sample used social media daily for more than 6 hours. The study found that the most important reasons for using Whatsapp is to communicate with family, friends and entertainment. They use Snapchat for entertainment, to learn about the cultures of other peoples and to follow up the influential people with experience, and of the cultural consequencesof using Whatsapp on the behavior of the female students in the social field are spreading rumors and mislead others through unreliable advertisements, and in the field of knowledge that Being preoccupied with Whatsapp messages reduces focus on task performance and facilitates the dissemination of ideas easily, and from the cultural consequencesof using Snapchat on the behavior of the female students in the cultural field, the predominance of entertainment and formal interests among female students and its role in dissemination of values contrary to our Islamic values and customs and in the field of education Students are seeing Snapchat as a tool to gain fame and show off and brag about. Given the importance of the role played by the social media in developing the social and intellectual mobility among the female university students, the researcher recommends to pay particular attention to this age group for their keen interest in knowledge to enable them to improve their skills according to their aspirations, thus contributing to the development of their society.   ، ، ، ،

Neste artigo socializamos os resultados de uma pesquisa que tomou como objeto a Ludoteca do Curso de Educação Física na Universidade Federal de Goiás - Regional Catalão (UFG/RC). A intenção foi compreendê-la a partir da tríplice visão de espaço de Henri Lefebvre (concebido, percebido e vivido). O percurso metodológico baseou-se na realização de uma pesquisa documental nos arquivos da Ludoteca e de entrevistas narrativas com duas ludotecárias, a quem chamamos de Ana e de Bia, e com a coordenadora, que denominamos Lua. Os dados foram analisados por meio da análise de conteúdo (BARDIN, 1997) e os resultados nos permitem compreender que os sentidos produzidos sobre a Ludoteca UFG possibilitam reconhecê-la como espaço que traz, na dimensão do concebido, marcas da universidade que a acolhe como política de extensão, mas que introjetam nela as possibilidades próprias do ensino e da pesquisa, enriquecendo-a e tornando-a espaço de formação. Pela dimensão do percebido o espaço da Ludoteca tem como marcas a coletividade, a partilha e a produção de subjetividades que transitam e exploram a reprodução do espaço social pela via da transmissão da cultura lúdica, das tradições e do repertório da infância quanto à produção do espaço que tem na transgressão, nas táticas e nas artes de fazer a chance de criação de novos roteiros de pessoa e de sociedade. The intention was to understand from the vision of space of Henri Lefebvre (conceived, perceived and lived). The methodological course was based on the accomplishment of a documentary research in the archives of the Ludoteca and the accomplishment of narrative interviews with the playroom workers and the coordinator. The data were analyzed through content analysis (BARDIN, 1997) and the results allow us to perceive the senses produced on the UFG Playroom as a space that brings, in the dimension of the conceived, marks of the university that welcomes it as a extension policy, but which introduce in it the possibilities of teaching and research, enriching it and making it a space for formation. By the dimension of the perceived the space of the playroom has as collective marks the collective, the sharing and the production of subjectivities that transit and explore the reproduction of the social space by means of the transmission of the ludic culture, the traditions and the repertory of the childhood as the production of the space that has in the transgression, tactics and arts to make the chance to create new scripts of person and society. By the dimension of the lived it establishes itself as a living, complex laboratory that has in its genesis the formation by the presence, memory, sharing and playfulness that incorporating the values of the public university extend the understanding of the Labyrinth much more than merely being a "place in what a child plays. This is article derived from a thesis study in the Sociology Department of the University of Indonesia in 2008 exploring socio-economic, socio-political and socio-cultural contexts playing their roles in the formation of the political and religious fields along with their respective ‘habitus’ of the social agents in the Papua land. This paper discusses the history of the term “papua” itself based on a historical study conducted by Solewijn Gelpke (1993). Based on historical approach, the relationship between Muslims and Christians in Papua can be traced as a religious and cultural heritage. Also, by using a sociological conception elaborated by Bourdieu (1992: 9), we may view the Papua land as a social space encompassing all conceptions of the social world. Bourdieu’s social space conception considers the social reality as a topology (Harker, 1990).

Universities are important units, which to enable transition from basic education to vocational field and consist of academicians, students, administrative staff, locates in campuses where are accepted as small-scale city. Campuses should provide user’s needs such as sociocultural improvement with its physical structure. In recent years, number of universities in Turkey has increased rapidly and uncontrollably. Buildings has constructed made without sufficient analysis of the area. It takes a lot of time to build the campuses and there is no space in the city, so instant solutions are created. Besides, buildings that are rised vertically in random areas occur. The aim of this study is to examine the development of university campuses and structures through examples, to determine the changes of structures and to reveal positive and negative effects of these changes on the social environment. In the method of study, the effects of the university campus and its structures on the society, is handled comparatively. Firstly, the parameters of the university buildings that affect the society were determined in line with the literature review. Thus, it has been evaluated in several universities in Turkey. Besides, the positive and negative effects of the university building types are given comparatively. In the study, it was concluded that university areas serving at structure scale are weak in supplying with community needs. Also, suggestions have been made to ensure that university structures can respond to the society needs.
