Abstract Parents adjust their reproductive investment over their lifespan based on their condition, age, and social environment, creating the potential for inter-generational effects to differentially affect offspring physiology. To date, however, little is known about how social environments experienced by parents throughout development and adulthood influence the effect of parental age on the expression of life-history traits in the offspring. Here, I collected data on Drosophila melanogaster offspring traits (i.e., body weight, water content and lipid reserves) from populations where either mothers, fathers both or neither parents experienced different social environments during development (larval crowding) and adulthood. Parental treatment modulated parental age effects on offspring lipid reserves but did not influence parental age effects on offspring water content. Importantly, parents in social environments where all individuals were raised in uncrowded larval densities produced daughters and sons lighter than parental treatments which produced the heaviest offspring. The peak in offspring body weight was delayed relative to the peak in parental reproductive success, but more strongly so for daughters from parental treatments where some or all males in the parental social environments were raised in crowded larval densities (irrespective of their social context), suggesting a potential father-to-daughter effect. Overall, the findings of this study reveal that parental ecological history (here, developmental and adult social environments) can modulate the effects of parental age at reproduction on the expression of offspring traits.

Objective: To develop a novel patient decision aid (PtDA) for parents considering tonsillectomy for their children diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and compare it to validated scales related to decision making in this context. These included scales for decisional conflict (DC) and shared decision making (SDM). Methods: A parental survey during 2017 to 2018 in a tertiary care pediatric otolaryngology clinic was conducted comparing a validated Decisional Conflict Scale (DCS) with a new PtDA that included an SDM scale, parental treatment goals, and knowledge about adenotonsillectomy and OSA. DCS scores range from 0 to 100 with values less than 25 considered to be low DC. The DQ was determined by a score on the PtDA. The PtDA was composed of a knowledge score, SDM score and 5 related values scored along a continuum (these were: resolution of symptoms, avoiding anesthesia, avoiding surgery, avoiding pain/bleeding, and resumption of normal behavior). A high score meant that all answers were consistent with choosing tonsillectomy and imply better DQ. Results: A total of 89 parents or guardians participated in the study. The mean DC score was 4.32 (95% CI: 2.57-6.07). The mean DQ score was 22.69 (95% CI: 21.86-23.51). Mean values score was 5.35 (95% CI: 5.05-5.65). The mean knowledge score was 9.00 (95% CI: 8.60-9.40). SDM score mean was 8.38 (95% CI: 7.85-8.91). Using Spearman’s rho, DC versus DQ inversely correlated with a coefficient −.209 via a 2-tailed test ( P = .05). Cronbach’s alpha for the DQ score was .78. Conclusion: DC scores overall were low for the group. DQ, as measured with the novel PtDA, had an inverse correlation with DC scores, suggesting validity of the proposed PtDA. Our instrument has potential use as a PtDA for parents who are offered tonsillectomy for their children.

Heat stress is a major limiting factor of grain yield and quality in crops. Abiotic stresses have a transgenerational impact and the mechanistic basis is associated with epigenetic regulation. The current study presents the first systematic analysis of the transgenerational effects of post-anthesis heat stress in tetraploid wheat. Leaf physiological traits, harvest components and grain quality traits were characterized under the impact of parental and progeny heat stress. The parental heat stress treatment had a positive influence on the offspring for traits including chlorophyll content, grain weight, grain number and grain total starch content. Integrated sequencing analysis of the small RNAome, mRNA transcriptome and degradome provided the first description of the molecular networks mediating heat stress adaptation under transgenerational influence. The expression profile of 1771 microRNAs (733 being novel) and 66,559 genes was provided, with differentially expressed microRNAs and genes characterized subject to the progeny treatment, parental treatment and tissue-type factors. Gene Ontology and KEGG pathway analysis of stress responsive microRNAs-mRNA modules provided further information on their functional roles in biological processes such as hormone homeostasis, signal transduction and protein stabilization. Our results provide new insights on the molecular basis of transgenerational heat stress adaptation, which can be used for improving thermo-tolerance in breeding.

Mother-child interactions around a shared activity have been shown to play a key role in the development of young children’s capacity to interact cooperatively with others. This evidence is particularly germane to type 1 diabetes (T1D) management in younger children where cooperation with parental treatment efforts is crucial for treatment success and where maternal distress and child behavioural problems are risk factors for treatment management, biomedical and psychological outcomes. In 49 4-to-8 year old children with T1D, we investigated whether the association between maternal affect and child problematic behaviour is mediated by mother-child interactions in the context of a T1D-relevant collaborative problem-solving activity. Mothers completed standardised measures of maternal and child psychological adjustment and interacted with their children in the problem-solving activity, analysed for quality of interpersonal engagement based on evaluations of maternal (sensitivity and cognitive stimulation) and dyadic (joint attention and warmth) behaviours. Mediation analyses confirmed the hypothesis that interpersonal engagement mediates the relation between maternal affective state and child behavioural problems. Specifically, more negative maternal affect is associated with lower levels of interpersonal engagement; these less engaged interactions in turn are associated with more behavioural problems in children. These findings are consistent with research involving typically developing children. The implications of our findings are twofold. First, in the context of psychological adjustment to T1D, maternal affect and mother-child interactions are 2 potential targets for interventions which promote cooperative interactions. Second, understanding and caring for children at biological risk requires attention to developmental psychology theory and method; in particular, research addressing parent-child cooperation carries both conceptual and clinical relevance.

Low temperatures seriously depress germination and seedling establishment in wheat and it is of great significance to explore approaches to improve wheat tolerance to low temperatures. In this study, the effects of seed pre-soaking and parental treatment with melatonin on seed germination and low temperature tolerance during the early growing stage in wheat were studied. The results showed that pre-soaking with melatonin increased the germination rate, improved antioxidant capacity and accelerated starch degradation under low temperature, which alleviated low temperature-induced damage to the chloroplasts in coleoptiles of wheat seedlings. Parental melatonin treatment during grain filling stage significantly decreased the grain weight. Seeds from parental melatonin-treated plants showed higher germination rates and higher antioxidant enzyme activity than the control seeds under low temperature. In addition, parental treatment with melatonin modulated the activities of carbohydrate metabolism enzymes, which contributes to enhanced low temperature tolerance in wheat offspring. It was suggested that both seed pre-soaking and parental treatment with melatonin could be the effective approaches for low temperature tolerance induction in wheat.

Lesbian behavioral trends occur due to lack of control of parents who are not concerned with the activities of their children, causing children to do things that deviate from the prevailing values and norms. The purpose of this study to determine the condition of family background as the cause of lesbian in Padang. This research uses Qualitative method with case study design. The subjects of this study were three lesbians. Data were obtained by using participant observation technique and in-depth interview. The results showed factors causing lesbian behavior in the study subjects because of family background conditions that are less harmonious. With regard to the need for implications for parental parenting to prevent lesbian behavior is discussed further.

The Covid-19 pandemic made a change in the learning process from offline to online. This has inevitable positive and negative effects from various aspects, such as learning objectives, students, educators, infrastructure, and the learning environment. All aspects of education that used to take place predominantly in schools are now all at home. Therefore, the key aspect of implementing education is now played by parents. But, the problem is, not all of parents have adequate knowledge about how to educate children and the psychological aspects that accompany it. The individual difference factor is the main aspect that determines children success in learning. This happens with the interaction between the accuracy of parental treatment that takes into account individual differences, thus making children motivated in learning. When the children’s learning motivation is good, the learning will take place effectively and make a meaningful contribution to the childs’ life. Thus, parents must strive for this achievement in order to get good results in children’s education even during the pandemic.
